RelaÃÃo afetiva pessoa-ambiente na Prainha do Canto Verde: processos de participaÃÃo comunitÃria / Person-environment affective relationship in Prainha do Canto Verde community partipation processes

FundaÃÃo de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Cearà / Este trabalho discute a participaÃÃo comunitÃria e a relaÃÃo afetiva (sentimentos e emoÃÃes) dos sujeitos com o ambiente, na Prainha do Canto Verde, em Beberibe, CearÃ. Seus objetivos envolvem, alÃm de uma anÃlise da inter-relaÃÃo destes dois fatores, um levantamento do modo de vida comunitÃrio, e o estudo das implicaÃÃes da participaÃÃo/ausÃncia participativa nas representaÃÃes e afetos dos sujeitos em relaÃÃo ao lugar. Para isso, utilizamos o referencial teÃrico da Psicologia Social, Psicologia ComunitÃria, Psicologia Ambiental e de autores que estudam a categoria afetividade, em uma tentativa de superar o dualismo presente tradicionalmente na Psicologia que dicotomiza subjetividade e objetividade, razÃo e emoÃÃo. O pÃblico alvo foram os moradores adultos, de ambos os sexos e diferentes escolaridades, da referida localidade, que foram analisados a partir de dois grupos: participantes de aÃÃes comunitÃrias e nÃo participantes de aÃÃes comunitÃrias. Para tal, utilizamos as seguintes metodologias: observaÃÃo-participante, investigando o modo de vida local e o funcionamento comunitÃrio; entrevistas individuais e grupo focal, utilizadas para entender as diferenÃas entre o posicionamento dos dois grupos sobre as aÃÃes participativas e a percepÃÃo do lugar; e aplicaÃÃo do instrumento gerador dos mapas afetivos, investigando os sentimentos e as emoÃÃes dos sujeitos em relaÃÃo ao ambiente, a partir das seguintes imagens: pertencimento, agradabilidade, contraste, inseguranÃa e destruiÃÃo. Na Prainha do Canto Verde, nos deparamos com um forte sentimento de comunidade e laÃos de solidariedade e cooperaÃÃo entre seus moradores. Foi encontrada uma diferenÃa entre participantes e nÃo participantes de aÃÃes comunitÃrias no tocante a: sentimento de comunidade, apego ao lugar, sensaÃÃo de seguranÃa/inseguranÃa, preocupaÃÃo com a preservaÃÃo ambiental e percepÃÃo dos problemas locais. A participaÃÃo comunitÃria, que à massiva e engajada, se evidenciou muitas vezes como ligada à identidade destes sujeitos, formada desde a sua infÃncia, especialmente pela identificaÃÃo com a participaÃÃo dos pais. A participaÃÃo se mostrou vivenciada a partir de sentimentos como âdesejoâ e âpaixÃoâ, e motivada pela vontade de preservar o local e o modo de vida para seus filhos. Como resultado dos mapas afetivos a imagem de âpertencimentoâ esteve significativamente mais associada ao grupo participante de aÃÃo comunitÃria, jà as imagens de âcontrastesâ, âinseguranÃaâ e âdestruiÃÃoâ, ao grupo dos nÃo participantes. A imagem âagradabilidadeâ esteve presente de forma significativa nos dois grupos. Entre os participantes, encontramos especialmente sentimentos em relaÃÃo ao lugar como: amor, paz, tranquilidade, alegria. Entre os nÃo participantes, tambÃm encontramos estes sentimentos, porÃm tambÃm surgiram sentimentos como tristeza e infelicidade. Dessa forma, evidenciou-se que a participaÃÃo comunitÃria interfere nos sentimentos e nas emoÃÃes dos sujeitos em relaÃÃo ao lugar, corroborando com a tese de Bomfim, que correlaciona a estima de lugar e a participaÃÃo social, e sua consequente potencializaÃÃo da aÃÃo humana. / This study discusses community participation and affectionate relationship (feelings and emotions) between the subjects and the environment in Prainha do Canto Verde, Beberibe, CearÃ. The objectives involve, besides the analysis of the interrelation of these two factors, a survey about the community way of living, and the study of the implications of the participatory/absence participation on the subjectsâ representations and affections related to the place. For that, we use theoretical reference from Social Psychology, Community Psychology, Environmental Psychology, and authors who study the category affectivity, with the attempt to overcome the dualism that is present traditionally in Psychology that dichotomizes subjectivity and objectivity, reason and emotion. The target group was the adult local residents, of both genders and different educational levels, from the mentioned location, and they were analyzed according to what follows: participants of community action and non-participants of community actions. For that, we use the following methodologies: participant observation, investigating the local way of living and community functioning; individual interviews and focus groups, used to understand the differences between the positioning of the two groups about the participatory actions and the perception of the place; and the application of the instrument that generates the affective maps, investigating the feelings and the emotions of the subjects related to the environment, starting from the following images: belonging, pleasantness, contrast, insecurity and destruction. In Prainha do Canto Verde, we observed a great feeling of community and bonds of solidarity and cooperation among the residents. A difference between the participants and non-participants of the community actions was found concerning the following: community feeling, attachment to the place, sensation of security and insecurity, preoccupation with the environment preservation and the perception of local problems. Community participation, which is massive and engaged, was most of the time highlighted with a link to the identity of these subjects, shaped since childhood, especially because of the parentsâ participation. The participation was showed through feelings like desire and passion, and motivated by the will of preserving the location and the way of living to their children. As a result of the affective maps the image of belonging was significantly associated to the group participant of the community action, whereas the images of contrasts, insecurity and destruction to the group of the non-participants. The image pleasantness was present in both of the groups. Among the participants, we found the following feelings related to the place: love, peace, tranquility, happiness. Among the non-participants, we also found those feelings although sadness and unhappiness were present. Thus, community participation interferes in the feelings and emotions of the subject in relation to the place, supporting Bomfimâs thesis, which correlates the esteem of the place and the social participation and its consequent potentiation of human action.

The foundation of capability modelling : a study of the impact and utilisation of human resources

This research aims at finding a foundation for assessment of capabilities and applying the concept in a human resource selection. The research identifies a common ground for assessing individuals’ applied capability in a given job based on literature review of various disciplines in engineering, human sciences and economics. A set of criteria is found to be common and appropriate to be used as the basis of this assessment. Applied Capability is then described in this research as the impact of the person in fulfilling job requirements and also their level of usage from their resources with regards to the identified criteria. In other words how their available resources (abilities, skills, value sets, personal attributes and previous performance records) can be used in completing a job. Translation of the person’s resources and task requirements using the proposed criteria is done through a novel algorithm and two prevalent statistical inference techniques (OLS regression and Fuzzy) are used to estimate quantitative levels of impact and utilisation. A survey on post graduate students is conducted to estimate their applied capabilities in a given job. Moreover, expert academics are surveyed on their views on key applied capability assessment criteria, and how different levels of match between job requirement and person’s resources in those criteria might affect the impact levels. The results from both surveys were mathematically modelled and the predictive ability of the conceptual and mathematical developments were compared and further contrasted with the observed data. The models were tested for robustness using experimental data and the results for both estimation methods in both surveys are close to one another with the regression models being closer to observations. It is believed that this research has provided sound conceptual and mathematical platforms which can satisfactorily predict individuals’ applied capability in a given job. This research has contributed to the current knowledge and practice by a) providing a comparison of capability definitions and uses in different disciplines, b) defining criteria for applied capability assessment, c) developing an algorithm to capture applied capabilities, d) quantification of an existing parallel model and finally e) estimating impact and utilisation indices using mathematical methods.

Interests are often considered a key element in vocational choices and are often used in both structured and free forms of career assessment. This master level thesis seeks to view the interest inventory Self-Directed Search as a process of learning and competence development. Four psychologists at the Swedish Public Employment Service were interviewed in an open fashion about how they integrate interest inventories in the career counselling and assessment process. The collected data were then analysed according to thematic analysis in relation tocompetence. Systems theory was used to understand relations between parts and whole in aprocess of mutual meaning and sense-making between psychologist and client. Interest inventories can in this way show characteristics of competence development when conducted ina process over time and being facilitated by a psychologist. Some elements of competence were represented to a greater extent than others. The study raises questions about how interest inventories can be developed and used in career intervention in order to manifest different aspects of competence and facilitate competence development.

WORK MEANINGFULNESS: EXAMINING S-ABC NEEDS-SUPPLIES FIT AND WORK AS JOBS, CAREERS AND CALLINGS

Work meaningfulness is fundamental to how employees approach, enact, and experience tasks and interpersonal relationships, and to maintain mental well-being in the workplace. However, research on the antecedents of work meaningfulness is unbalanced, i.e., the heavy emphasis on the supplies (or sources) of work meaningfulness and the insufficient attention on the individuals’ survival and psychological needs. This paper aims to address this research gap of work meaningfulness by incorporating the person-environment fit framework with a special focus on needs-supplies fit type. Drawing on research concerning needs for survival and three basic psychological needs from self-determination theory, a set of needs-based antecedents of work meaningfulness were examined, viz., needs-supplies fit for survival, autonomy, belongingness, and competence (S-ABC needs-supplies fit). Additionally, the interaction effects of S-ABC needs-supplies fit and work orientation (work as jobs, careers, or callings) on work meaningfulness were investigated. The current study applied the two-phased explanatory sequential mixed methods research design (QUAN --> qual = Explain). Results from the phase 1 quantitative survey (N = 363) suggest that work meaningfulness increased as autonomy supplies approached the needed levels and decreased when supplies exceeded the needed levels. Meanwhile, work meaningfulness increased as survival, belongingness, and competence supplies approached the needed levels and remained high or continued increasing (as opposed to an expected decrease) when supplies exceeded the needed levels. Further, the study found interaction effects between work orientation and autonomy and belongingness needs-supplies fit on work meaningfulness, while no interaction was found between work orientation and survival and competence needs-supplies fit on work meaningfulness. Contrary to expectations, the results suggest that individuals who view work as jobs were more susceptible to autonomy and belongingness needs-supplies fit/misfit; while work as callings or careers acted as a buffer and mitigated the otherwise negative effects of autonomy and belongingness needs-supplies fit/misfit on work meaningfulness. Specifically, for people who viewed work as jobs, work meaningfulness increased as autonomy supplies approached the needed levels but decreased when supplies exceeded the needed levels; and work meaningfulness increased as belongingness supplies approached the needed levels and continued increasing as belongingness exceeded the needed levels. When people viewed work as careers or callings, autonomy and belongingness needs-supplies fit/misfit did not significantly influence work meaningfulness. The phase 2 qualitative interview (N = 23) results generally corroborated with the quantitative results and provided empirical evidences that were explanatory to the quantitative results. Implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.

Occupational performance and social participation of children with cerebral palsy : A scoping review

Introduction: Social participation (SP) of children with cerebral palsy (CP) may be limited by various factors. Domains of occupational therapy were within the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model. Aim: The study aim was to identify the literature regarding the impact of occupational performance on the social participation of children with cerebral palsy. Method: A scoping review explored peer-reviewed and grey literature from 2013-2023 to incorporate data/experiences via search databases, internet search engines blogs/websites, and manual searches. The inclusion criteria were participants with CP aged 10-18. Data analysis was carried out through qualitative content analysis. Findings: Twenty-nine articles and 14 blogs/websites were included. The impairment's severity and environmental factors emphasizing the parental role and income were prominent influences on OP and SP. The importance of social support was highlighted through experiences presented in grey literature. The themes aligned with the categories of the PEOP model, where a mismatched category occurred, related to sexuality. Conclusion: This review pointed out the factors that influence OP and SP presented based on the categories of the PEOP model, including the mismatched category. Significance: The importance of the representative role of occupational therapy was emphasized. The results indicated future research recommendations based on school type and sexuality.

Who gets hired? : A qualitative study on how person-job fit and person-organization fit factors apply to the employee selection process in small finance companies.

This qualitative study aims to gain a deepened understanding of talent acquisition in small finance companies' selection processes by focusing on person-job and person-organization fit. Talent acquisition is defined as hiring quality candidates that meet the organization's needs (Mathis et al., 2016). It is crucial to hire the right candidates since the organization is less likely to succeed without qualified employees (Mathis et al., 2016). This study focuses on two aspects of person-environment fit: person-job fit and person-organization fit. Ensuring these aspects can lead to successful employment (Sekiguchi, 2004). Person-job fit evaluates three factors, knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA), and how they match the job task (Carless, 2005). Person-organization also evaluates three factors, attraction-selection-attrition, and how they match the employees' values and the organization's values and needs (Verquer et al., 2002).  The empirical data is based on semi-structured interviews with six small finance companies, where we gained a deepened understanding of their employee selection process. We connect previous research to our empirical data to gain a deepened understanding of how small finance companies can acquire talented candidates by ensuring person-job fit and person-organization fit. We used a thematic analysis to code our empirical data and draw conclusions from it.  This study has shown that knowledge is not as accounted for as previous research claims. Small finance companies consider a candidate’s skills and abilities more. Skills are assessed by job-related tests that show how fast and at what level the candidate will be able to perform. Ability is the most critical factor that small finance companies consider. If the candidate shows dedication and an entrepreneurial mindset, it indicates that the candidate possesses certain traits that the small finance companies desire. Attraction is whether the candidate and the organization share the same values and small finance companies can tailor-make roles to attract talented candidates. Selecting talent in small finance companies depends on the candidate's ability to fit into the group dynamic rather than fitting into the organization’s culture. The candidate and the organization’s expectations of attrition must match. However, it is up to the small finance companies to keep their employees satisfied.
