CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / A Abordagem Centrada na Pessoa (ACP), fundada por Carl Rogers, sà pode ser justificada a partir de um conjunto de valores e de uma Ãtica e nÃo somente como uma aplicaÃÃo de tÃcnicas e conhecimentos. AlÃm disto, a partir dos estudos de Figueiredo (1996) fica estabelecida a importÃncia do Ãthos como busca de um lugar para o Outro na constituiÃÃo das psicologias. Naquilo que se refere ao Lugar do Outro na constituiÃÃo da subjetividade, Freire (2002) investiga o lugar para a alteridade nas diversas psicologias modernas e afirma que, na ACP, o lugar para a alteridade radical levinasiana està vacante, assim como nas demais psicologias. O Outro, conforme postulado por LÃvinas (2008 [1961]), à precedente e transcendente ao Eu; nÃo sendo possÃvel totalizÃ-lo e compreendÃ-lo inteiramente, ele apresenta a dimensÃo do estranho na experiÃncia psicolÃgica. Este Outro nÃo à figura tÃo cara para as psicologias como aparenta ser. Por outro lado, Peter Schmid (1999) concebe que a Ãtica à a primeira questÃo a ser pensada quando se trata da ACP, quer de sua teoria, quer de sua prÃtica. Daà que este trabalho objetivou apresentar a obra de Peter Schmid à comunidade brasileira da abordagem rogeriana. A perspectiva deste autor està alicerÃada em um diÃlogo importante com as filosofias do diÃlogo e uma visÃo do humano como radicalmente pessoa, o que oferece outra forma de encarar a alteridade na teoria e prÃtica rogerianas. Tal mudanÃa apresenta uma profÃcua aproximaÃÃo com a filosofia Ãtica de Emmanuel LÃvinas. Como metodologia para o estudo, utilizou-se um quase-mÃtodo inspirado nas filosofias de LÃvinas (2008 [1961]) e Derrida (2008), em que buscamos, entre outras coisas, pÃr à mostra a polissemia dos discursos estudados. Concluiu-se que, apesar da perspectiva formulada por Schmid apresentar divergÃncias com a Ãtica levinasiana, ao fazer releituras dos principais conceitos da ACP, ela apresenta uma maior aproximaÃÃo com aquela e uma nova forma de lidar com a alteridade dentro do arcabouÃo da abordagem rogeriana. Espera-se, com este trabalho, fomentar um maior diÃlogo e produÃÃo acerca do cuidado clÃnico e psicoterapÃutico com a pessoa e o lugar oferecido para a alteridade na psicologia rogeriana. / The Person Centred Approach (PCA), founded by Carl Rogers, can only be justified from a set of values and ethics and not only as an application of skills and knowledge. Furthermore, from studies of Figueiredo (1996), it is established the importance of ethos as a search for a place to the Other in the constitution of psychologies. In what refers to the place of the Other in the constitution of subjectivity, Freire (2002) investigates the place to alterity in several modern psychologies and states that in PCA, the place for Levinasâ radical alterity is vacant, as in other psychologies. The Other, as postulated by Levinas (2008 [1961]), is precedent and transcendent to the I; not being possible to totalize and understand it fully; it shows the dimension of the strange in the psychological experience. This Other is not so dear figure to psychologies as it appears to be. On the other hand, Peter Schmid (1999) conceives that ethics is the first issue to be considered when it comes to PCA, either its theory or its practice. Hence, the present paper aims to present the work of Peter Schmid to the Brazilian community of Rogerian approach. The perspective of this author is grounded in an important dialogue with the philosophies of dialogue and a vision of the human as radically a person, which offers another way to face the alterity in Rogerian theory and practice. Such change presents a fruitful approach to ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. A methodology for the study, we used an almost-in-method inspired by the philosophies of Levinas (2008 [1961]) and Derrida (2007), in which we seek, among other things, to put on display the polysemy of the studied speeches. We conclude that, despite the divergences among the prospect formulated by Schmid with Levinasian ethics, doing readings of the main concepts of the PCA, it shows a closer relationship with that one and a new way of dealing with the alterity within the framework of the Rogerian approach. With this work, we hope to foment a greater dialogue and production on the clinical and psychotherapeutic care of the person and the place offered to otherness in Rogerian psychology.

A PILOT PRAGMATIC RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL OF A 12-MONTH HEALTHY LIFESTYLES PROGRAM / FEASIBILITY STUDY OF THE HEALTHY LIFESTYLES PROGRAM

Background: The primary objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of the Healthy Lifestyles Program (HLP), a novel 12-month complex intervention based in cognitive behavioural therapy and theories of behavioural change, delivered in a community-based setting in Hamilton, Canada. The secondary objective was to explore implementation factors. Methods/ design: A pragmatic pilot randomised controlled trial using quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods. Participants were randomly allocated to either intervention group (n=15) or comparator group (n=15). The intervention group attended weekly group education sessions and met in-person with a healthcare team monthly to create personalized health goals and action plans. The comparator group met with a research assistant every three months to develop health goals and action plans. We assessed feasibility of the program by measuring recruitment, participation and retention rates, missing data, and attendance. All participant-directed and clinical outcome measures were analyzed for between and within group changes using Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE). Content analysis was conducted for qualitative data. Results: We recruited and randomized 30 participants to each group (n=15) within 3 months. Retention rate was 60% (9/15) for the intervention group and 47% (7/15) for the comparator group. Less than 1% of participant-directed and clinical outcomes were missing. Participants attended an average of 29 of 43 educational sessions and 100% of one-to-one sessions. The healthcare team valued the program’s holistic approach to care, increased time and interaction with participants, professional collaboration, and the ability to provide counselling and health supports. Location accessibility was an important factor facilitating implementation. Reducing the number of psycho-social education sessions and having access to a gym could improve retention and delivery of the program. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated the feasibility of the HLP with minor modifications recommended for a larger trial and for the intervention. / Thesis / Master of Public Health (MPH) / Rates of chronic physical and mental health illness are rising in Canada. Lifestyle or behavioural changes can prevent or manage chronic diseases. The aim of this pilot study is to test the feasibility of delivering a 12-month Healthy Lifestyles Program to participants in Hamilton, Canada. The Healthy Lifestyles Program is a complex intervention designed to help participants identify health goals and action plans to achieve those goals with the guidance of healthcare professionals. We observed that the program was successfully delivered, accepted by participants and staff and required minor changes to the study design for a scaled-up study. The program showed positive trends for improving goal attainment, depression, and loneliness scores. The results of this study will help inform the design and scale-up of a larger study.

This thesis deals with the subjectively perceived problematical relationship between the employees of a day care centre (who are either professional caregivers or teachers) and clients or pupils with severe multiple disabilities. Examining this relationship and other selected problematical situations took place as part of short-term group work project using psychotherapeutic techniques. The group work facilitated a change in the relationship of the day care centre's employees with the clients. The research was conducted with a small group of probands from the Zahrada Integration Centre and from the Zahrádka Elementary School in Prague 3. The following professional methods have been used in the preparation of this thesis: an analysis of the relevant scientific literature, group work with a small group of probands using some elements of psychotherapy, a questionnaire survey, an analysis of records concerning the progression of problematical situations and data analysis of case studies. The findings of this thesis are that group sessions comprising elements of psychotherapy represented a supportive factor in regard to the perception of the problematical relationships of individual probands with their clients. Nejprve jsou zde analyzovány obtíže, se kterými se tato diagnóza pojí, poté autorka objasňuje možné příčiny, možnosti intervence a prognózu. Zdůrazněn je rozdíl mezi intervencemi založenými na kognitivně behaviorální terapii a intervencemi založenými na přístupu zaměřeném na člověka. Dále práce seznamuje s novými metodami alternativní a augmentativní komunikace (AAK), které lze využít při komunikaci s jedinci s narušenou komunikační schopností. Teoretické texty doplňují praktické výsledky z longitudinálního výzkumného šetření - případové studie. Během tohoto šetření byl jedinec s pervazivní vývojovou poruchou nespecifikovanou (PVP-NOS) podroben intervenci vycházející z přístupu zaměřeného na člověka. Následně jeho verbální komunikace byla podpořena prostřednictvím metody AAK - počítačového programu s hlasovým výstupem. Získané informace jsou určeny pro využití jak odborné veřejnosti, tak rodičů k zefektivnění práce, a především komunikace, s výše uvedenými jedinci.

A heuristic and HSSI exploration of experiencing interplay between spiritual guidance and synchronicity within person-centred encounters

This research has been a study in amazement. Initially an agnostic physics graduate, the researcher undertook training in the person-centred approach (pca) to self-development and counselling, during which she came to experience strange personal experiences which she could neither gainsay nor fit into her then worldview. Sketching these briefly, exceptional human experiences (EHEs) and synchronicities increasingly happened until (shockingly) they declared a seeming spirit guide (Mungo) to her, also juxtaposed in time with her first-ever chance encounter with dowsing. Thereafter these phenomena, combined with randomisable image-cards, tutored her into a physically observable method of 'discussion' with them (alone or with another) conducted with pca values. This PhD involved researching that phenomenon-complex through 'discussions' with 35 participants. The methodology used was heuristics and its heuristic self-search inquiry specialism (HSSI) whose attention to personal experiencing, indwelling to contact tacit knowledge, and incubatory rest phases to foster illuminatory new 'ahaa!' apprehensions suited this nascent mysterious subject. Both participants and researcher experienced coincidences weaving the 'discussions' and their wider lives together. Thus synchronicity became equal-partner research-topic, being studied as it occurred and, through affecting certain choices, becoming part of the methodology itself. The phenomenon-complex was experienced as fostering ethical living, creativity, personal development and science-spirituality interconnection in ways wellpitched and paced for each experiencer. The phenomena were also experienced as synergizing with each other, and as fostering integration within and between persons. After work on the participant sessions was completed, the writings of further thesis chapters were 'butted into' by in-the-moment relevant synchronicities, not just singly but in flows and patterns in which the researcher found herself discerning overarching meanings. Given this exceptional opportunity the researcher (in effect doing a bonus research-section) tracked her experiencing of these synchronistic flows and her responses thereto wherever they led, using Sela-Smith's first-person heuristic self-search inquiry (HSSI) methodology. Each synchronistically-influenced chapter was experienced as exploring certain themes, with themes building as the thesis progressed. Heuristics and HSSI are usually transformative. This researcher was transformed from the ground up from agnosticism to credence in 'something more' through her experiencings (both alone and inter-relationally with participants). Their 'package deal' presented personal shadow-work alongside help in life difficulties, and great fascination but darker times too. In total she came to feel part of an interconnected, spiritually-intelligent and compassionate cosmic domain, and existentially happier.

Professional and personal caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) receive little or no training with regards to the nature, course and accompanying communication challenges of this illness (Haak, 2003). The main aim of the research study was to investigate the interaction between nursing home staff and persons with AD with in a nursing home context, before and after attending a communication-orientated educational workshop for the nursing home staff. Research was carried out by using multiple single case studies. A pre-experimental design was used as the research method. The four participants’ communication skills (verbal, nonverbal and paralinguistic) were evaluated by using the Pragmatic Protocol (Prutting and Kirchner, 1987). Their listening skills were observed and scored according to the Checklist of listening behaviours (Hartley, 1995). A questionnaire was designed to measure the participants’ knowledge and perceptions of different AD aspects. Various shortcomings were identified in the interaction process which highlights the importance of training staff to become competent in using communication strategies that facilitate more successful interaction with persons with AD. The communication-orientated educational workshop (event of the study) was designed according to the data that was collected and based on the person-centred approach of Kitwood (1997). The participants’ communication and listening skills, knowledge and perceptions were evaluated again in the posttest (after the workshop) to determine whether or not there had been a change in these areas. A general view of all the participants’ results showed that there was a significant change in their communication and listening skills. The interaction process was more appropriate during the posttest in comparison to the results that were obtained in the pretest. The participants’ interaction were based more on the principles of the person-centred approach to dementia care than the pretest. There had been a noticeable increase after the workshop in the participants’ knowledge and change to a more positive perception towards persons with AD and the illness. The conclusion has been reached that attendance and participation in a communication-orientated educational workshop leads to more positive interaction with persons with AD. This study has motivated the need for dementia care that is based on the principles of the person-centred approach. It is suggested that an increase in the person-centred approach leads to improvement in quality of life of persons with AD as well as the decrease of the effect of institutionalization in a nursing home setting. Suggestions for future research include that attention should be given to educational programmes with regards to communication strategies for persons with AD. Development of a training programme for state prosecutors to address re-victimization of the sexually abused child during forensic procedures

In this study the researcher developed a training programme for state prosecutors to address re-victimization of the sexually abused child during forensic procedures. The study commenced with a literature study focusing on the following aspects: <ul> <li>Person-centred approach as scientific foundation for the work with sexually abused children during forensic procedures.</li> <li>Sexual abuse and the long-term effects thereof.</li> <li>Addressing re-victimization of the sexually abused child during forensic procedures.</li> After finalizing the literature study, the researcher did the empirical study, which was a combined qualitative-quantitative study. The researcher started with the qualitative study, where prosecutors dealing with sexual abuse cases were interviewed to determine their training needs. After their training needs were determined a training programme was compiled. This training programme formed part of the quantitative study and was implemented during a training session for prosecutors at the Justice College in Pretoria. Exploring the family life cycle from an African perspective

How African individuals perceive the family life cycle, is the topic of this research. This qualitative study was facilitated with two individuals. Constructivism was used to explore how individuals create their reality. The Person-Centred Approach was studied to understand the importance of the Self- concept in the individual, and the role played by perceptions created in an ever-changing environment. Systems theory helped understand the interaction of family members as a system (family), especially the creation of stability after a state of disequilibrium – in this case, transitions between stages of the life cycle. Only with one respondent were some differences identified compared to the Western view of the life cycle. It was thus concluded that the family life cycle can be used as a guideline during therapy, regarding difficult transitions people (including African people) have to make, for therapists working from both the Person-Centred Approach and the systems perspective. / Social Work / (M.A. (Social Work (Mental Health))

The influence of participatory development on the communication patterns of the parachute packing section of the SANDF

The study was undertaken to ascertain whether participatory development (PD and) by implication, the Person Centred Approach (PCA) had an impact on change in the communication patterns in the parachute packing section in the SANDF. The study was conducted in a military setting where hierarchical authoritarian structures exist. PCA and PD are used as theoretical frameworks for the study which resulted in changes in the communication patterns at the section. Change occured at two levels viz: Changes in communication amongst the participants which led to teamwork, cooperation and the avoidance of conflict. Changes in communication between management (the Officer Commanding) and the parachute packing section which lead to regular contact with the participants to address their problems. The study further highlighted the importance of learning from the community in order to avoid misinterpretation which could lead to conflict and dissatisfaction / M. A.
