A Dedication to the Banal: E-relevant Web Text Sites and their Role in User-generated Culture

Dybka, Carly 27 May 2013 (has links)
E-relevant web text sites (EWT sites) are a relatively new phenomenon featuring banal yet remarkable user-generated texts on dedicated websites. This thesis analyses the sociosemiotic dimension of EWT sites in enabling neo-phatic communication: communication based on the relatable nature of EWT content and user-friendly medium, affording communicative acts without the requirement for in-depth discussion. Rather than fostering serious exchange, neo-phatic communication aims to establish a form of contact less brief than a greeting but akin to its purport, developing from banal but shared experiences. Analysis of the signification process involved in EWT sites, through a sociosemiotic framework based on Peirce’s second trichotomy of signs (icon, index, symbol) and the frame analysis of Goffman, shows that the sites’ semiotic structure belongs to a neo-phatic kind of communication unique to computer-mediated communication. This study illustrates how content with minimal substance might be under-valued as a means of understanding modern communication behaviour.

Eating and togetherness in "long-distance families"

Fisker, Luna Teresa Fleur Coco January 2019 (has links)
The increased mobility of people, as they relocate for job or work opportunities, cause some families to be separated for a substantial amount of time. Since this prevents the dinner table from being the natural gathering point for families, other ways of sustaining the relationships must be considered. This thesis finds that the feeling of togetherness is an important quality of eating together, and explores how this can be transferred to a physically distant family member. By exploring ongoing connectedness and symbols of presence, a concept is proposed to aid families in long distance relationships, to feel togetherness.

This study focuses on the analysis of the strategies used by participants to create and maintain involvement in business meetings. The research is an interpretive and qualitative case study in nature, based on a theoretical framework of Interactional Sociolinguistics. Two business meetings, recorded on audio and video, were used as a corpus: the purchase of raw materials and an agreement to outsource finishing graphic material. Through the politeness/emphatic style/rapport interface, we sought to point out face-want systems chosen by the participants in our data and the footings they assumed in an attempt to generate engagement with the self, with others and within the negotiation. The analysis demonstrated the distinction between the human desire for acceptance and approval, noting that, among the various authors studied, Lim & Bowers (1991) are those that best explain the face-want and face-work found in our research. Thus, there is consequent tension in establishing the boundary between institutional conversation and phatic communication. Also it was found that, depending on the footing and desires of the speaker to lose or save face, rapport can only be used to “break the ice” in transactional interactions or be responsible for a range of social functions, among which we strive to meet the positive face-want and to guide the social roles of participants in the relationship. This finding contradicts the view of some authors who do not recognize the importance of phatic communication.

The present study has as its theme the possibility of logical-rational control of the phatic judgment through the incidence of the standard of proof theory, which is problematized in the context of medical civil responsibility. It aims are to reflect on which standard of proof should be involved in actions of medical civil responsibility, as well as to observe if there is a degree of sufficiency of proof being required by the TJMG and TJRS to accept as rationally proven the fault in this type of demand. It was carried out not only through a bibliographic examination of national and foreign doctrine, but also through a qualitative empirical research of civil decisions of the Courts of Justice of the State of Minas Gerais and of the State of Rio Grande do Sul that deal with the proof of fault and other elements that give rise to medical civil responsibility, so that it would be possible to understand, through the analysis of the degree of proof of these jurisprudential narratives, how the judges are assessing the sufficiency of the probative set to prove the factual hypothesis, in view of the available evidence. It adopts as theoretical reference the principle of rational persuasion, a concept built gradually by the doctrine over the years and interpreted, according to the current conception of rationality that underlies it, as relative freedom of evaluation of the tests, carried out within rational-rational parameters between which include the standards of proof. This research is of great social and academic value, since it brings an innovative perspective to the field of proof and judicial conviction, providing undeniable jurisprudential and doctrinal development in our country, which makes us closer to reaching fairer decisions. It concludes, from the perspective of the previously established theoretical framework, that the theoretical research and the critical view on the result of the empirical research made possible the confirmation of the hypothesis that the standard of proof to be applied to the factual judgment in medical civil responsibility is the clear and convincing one, as a criterion of judgment, which will not only indicate the degree of proof to be necessarily satisfied to prove the doctor's fault, but also will provide better control of the judicial motivation on the facts, thus giving greater legitimacy and rationality to judicial decisions.

Problematika diagnostiky afázie v české a zahraniční odborné literatuře / Issue of aphasia diagnostics in czech and foreign literature

Stehlíková, Lenka January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the issue of diagnosis of phatic disorders. The aim of this work is to provide insight into the topic of phatic disorders, especially by introducing diagnostic tests that are used in the Czech Republic and some available materials that are used in English- speaking countries. Individual diagnostic tests are processed on the basis of an analysis of professional literature in Czech and English. The diploma thesis is theoretical and is divided into four parts. The first chapter describes the impaired communication ability, aphasia in terms of definition, etiology, symptomatology and classification approaches. The second chapter presents diagnostic methods created and used in the Czech environment, which differ depending on the theoretical basis of individual experts, respectively. authors of test methods. The third chapter deals with diagnostic procedures abroad, specifically in English-speaking countries. The focus is on the presentation of the most important and available current methods, part of the chapter is a theoretical introduction to the history of aphasiology and fundamental paradigms that affect the form of the diagnostic process. The final part is devoted to the analysis and comparison of these methods. Both approaches agree on the goal of the diagnostic...

Speaking Tumblr : A Case Study of Textual Communication on Social Media

Elmgren, Tove January 2018 (has links)
This essay describes a case study of textual communication on the online social mediaplatform Tumblr. The aim of the research was to analyse the communicative functions and thestylistic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic characteristics of textual discourse on Tumblr. Usingdata gathered on Tumblr, this essay analyses discursive aspects such as function, style, andpragmatics, relating the findings to literature on topics including relevance theory and theoriesof computer-mediated communication and cyberpragmatics. The research found thatdiscourse on Tumblr is largely phatic in nature, with an overwhelming focus on the discussionof shared interests. Such discussion on Tumblr appears to heavily depend on sharedbackground knowledge, which works as a barrier of in-group discursive solidarity andprovides and furthers feelings of connectedness. This study further found that alternative useof style and grammar on Tumblr appears to be largely uniform, suggesting that divergencesfrom standard norms are a way of displaying membership of a group and obtaining covertprestige, rather than a display of linguistic innovation.

KITTNAROVÁ, Denisa. Communication training and social integration of people over cerebral apoplexy. Prague 2021. Diploma thesis. Charles University in Prague. Hussite Theological Faculty. Department of Psychosocial Sciences and Ethics. Thesis supervisor PhDr. Beáta Krahulcová, CSc. The main goal of my diploma thesis was to find out, how successful it is to integrate people over cerebral apoplexy into normal social and working life. The theoretical part introduces the reader to the cerebral apoplexy as such. It also deals with phatic disorders caused by cerebral apoplexy and brain trauma, rehabilitation and its possibilities, communication, and communication training and, last but not least, social services. In this thesis, I chose a qualitative method to obtain data using a semi-structured interview. At the end of this diploma thesis, the results of the research survey are processed and interpreted.

Semiotics as a medium to convey the philosophy and psychology of evil in the Xitsonga translation of Macbeth

Ndove, Mkhancane Daniel 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis publicly displays the veracity of witchcraft and superstitious fables, which, many people believe to be irrational in nature. In this analysis, semiotics has been paraded in various versions from chapter to chapter-in order to illustrate the miscellaneous interpretations. The backbone of the investigation focuses on the philosophy and psychology of evil, a theoretical belief that is laid down by practical paradigms at the edge of each chapter. The point of departure of this investigation emanates from the Shakespearean literary work, Macbeth, which is popularly known for its inclusion of the witches in its illustration of the Scottish kingship. Therefore this thesis has adopted the practices of the witches and from there came out with what is commonly practiced by the Vatsonga people. Scotland, England, Germany and France of the 15th and 16th centuries were the countries best known as the most uncouthed centres for witchcraft and superstitions. Therefore leading stories from these European countries have made this project feasible. The study has leaked many of the unfounded stories about witchcraft and superstitions that were thought of as extraordinarily great but made real in this work. It has gone as far as windswept the kingship rites, coronation, the powers of the divine bones upon the anointed king, ritual ceremonies, causes of prosperity and failure, tales about stars, ghosts, reptiles, zombies and those hideous deeds that are not socially acceptable such as digging up of children's graves, convulsions, calling for rain, punishment meted out for a witch, prevention of adultery, changing oneself to a crocodile, rat, snake and many more stories. / African Languages / D. PhDr. František Vrhel, CSc. 2015 Key Words and Abstract Key words: deixis; deictic perspective; linguistic categories; descriptive metalanguage; public space; social interaction; interpretive approach; mediated communication; mass media; ideologies; social identity; origo; situatedness; phatic function; Czech; German. Abstract: This thesis examines whether, and to what extent, deixis can be conceptualized as an interpretive principle of social interactions and communication. It addresses the question on both theoretical and empirical levels, analyzing samples of direct and mediated communication in Czech and German public space. In order to capture deictic phenomena by an adequate conceptual framework, I take some binary dichotomies of the descriptive metalanguage of linguistics and reconceptualize them as continuous scales. Using these scales, I explore the notional borders of the term "deixis." I further identify protosymbolic potential in deictic expressions as...
