A Dedication to the Banal: E-relevant Web Text Sites and their Role in User-generated Culture

Dybka, Carly 27 May 2013 (has links)
E-relevant web text sites (EWT sites) are a relatively new phenomenon featuring banal yet remarkable user-generated texts on dedicated websites. This thesis analyses the sociosemiotic dimension of EWT sites in enabling neo-phatic communication: communication based on the relatable nature of EWT content and user-friendly medium, affording communicative acts without the requirement for in-depth discussion. Rather than fostering serious exchange, neo-phatic communication aims to establish a form of contact less brief than a greeting but akin to its purport, developing from banal but shared experiences. Analysis of the signification process involved in EWT sites, through a sociosemiotic framework based on Peirce’s second trichotomy of signs (icon, index, symbol) and the frame analysis of Goffman, shows that the sites’ semiotic structure belongs to a neo-phatic kind of communication unique to computer-mediated communication. This study illustrates how content with minimal substance might be under-valued as a means of understanding modern communication behaviour.

Análise semiótica do roteiro da telenovela Cheias de Charme

Severo, Simone Dorneles January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the script that generated the soap opera Cheias de Charme by Rede Globo (2012) based on the Semiotic Theory of Algirdas Julien Greimas (1970), with emphasis on the generative path of meaning and the Sociosemiotic view of Erik Landowski (1992). Concepts of audiovisual production are also discussed based on Doc Comparato (2009), Flavio de Campos (2007), Luiz Carlos Maciel (2003) and Marcos Rey (1997) theory. For this, the text is divided in three parts representing the initial state (script 1), the transformational state (script 72, middle of the text) and the final state (script 143, last part of the text) of the housemaids Maria da Penha, Maria do Rosário and Maria Aparecida in opposition to their bosses Chayene, Lygia Ortega and Sônia Sarmento. Then, through the generative path of meaning production of the Greimasian Semiotic Theory, the elements of the fundamental (axiological relations of contrariety, contradiction and complementarity), narrative (narrative programs and modalizations) and discursive (figures and themes) levels of the text are described. The analysis allowed to establish, through a theory of language, a link of sociocultural and political aspects of Brazilian society and their impact on the approval of the Constitutional Amendment Project n ° 66/2012 – Law of the Domestic Employees in Brazil. It is concluded that the Brazilian soap opera script constitutes a constructor and circulator of sociocultural meanings of Brazil and that the Semiotic Theory and its Sociosemiotic line are suitable to access this textual genre.

Normbrytande kampanjaffischer vid tunnelbanestationer : En sociosemiotisk multimodal studie av normbrytande kampanjaffischer / Norm breaking campaign posters in subway stations

Berggren, Jessica January 2021 (has links)
Commercials effect norms and much more, but how does the individual abide to these normativeperceptions in Swedish media? The norm is only first identified when it differs from what is not the norm. Therefor knowledge surrounding the commercials influential power on individuals is needed. The purpose of this study is to examine how diversity in society can be mirrored in campaign posters in subway stations. The starting point is to apply a linguistic perspective to be able to analyze how written text and image can express meaning through a sociosemiotic multimodal analysis from the interpersonalmeta-function. The material consists of four campaign posters and each poster is analyzed as a whole. If needed the individuals or parts being displayed in the poster will be analyzed as well. The chosen campaign posters are: 1177 hjälper dygnet runt, Många har många frågor, GÖR PLATS! and Julstök.

LoveNepal : En kvalitativ undersökning om hur en hjälporganisation skapar engagemang i sociala medier

Wiklund, Malin January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the study is to analyse how LoveNepal, a non-governmental organization, communicates to create engagement among their audience on Facebook. The theoretical framework is obtained from multimodal and sociosemiotics theory, with focus on different semiotic resources that LoveNepal communicate to engage their receivers. The results show that LoveNepal use different semiotics resources in images and texts to create proximity and relationship to their receivers. LoveNepal use visual and linguistic resources that can arouse deeper feelings like compassion and empathy, but also a feeling of credibility and trust in the organization. The study also shows that LoveNepal often combine different semiotics resources, that balances and reinforce each other – this is also a way for the organization to engage their audience and make feel that they want to join LoveNepal and save more lives.
