The prayers and oaths of the Middle English verse romances draw upon a range of pious formulae. These stock invocations rehearse key episodes from salvation history. Such formulae are widely viewed as mere line-fillers and they are rarely credited with stylistic influence. Yet the startling power of their apposite usage in charged narrative moments prompts further investigation. The thesis aims to demonstrate how the use of pious formulae in the romances is not inevitably mechanical. It comprises a catalogue and stylistic study of such formulae. The catalogue records all examples appearing in a single witness to each of the pre-1500 verse romances. By furnishing information on prosodic context, it offers a reference tool with which to measure the extent of technical determination in the appearance of a formula. The thesis analyses this material and advances claims for the aesthetic value of pious formulae. Chapter 1 reviews the evidence of the catalogue. It is shown how pious formulae embody an impressive range of devotional imagery. Chapter 2 illustrates that cognate formulae are widely employed in Middle English religious literature. It is shown how therein they exhibit a theological significance and a stylistic saliency. Chapter 3 shows how intermittent reflections of this serious stylistic usage are apparent in the pious romance, Guy of Warwick. Chapters 4 and 5 show how the affective resonance of such formulae is consistently exploited in the Stanzaic Morte Arthur and William of Palerne respectively. Chapter 6 provides a brief summary. It concludes that the pious formulae of the romances can convey a strong aesthetic charge. They serve as more than mere line-fillers. Three appendices are included. Appendix A explores the relation between pious formulae and medieval profane oaths. Appendix B lists the variant readings of the formulae of four romances. Appendix C comprises the catalogue.

ABSTRACT DOMESTIC PIETY IN THE MINISTRY OF JOHN ANGELL JAMES Jeffery Steven Wright, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2013 Chair: Dr. Timothy Paul Jones Chapter 1 introduces John Angell James as a person worthy of recognition and research. James's godly character, pastoral leadership and worldwide influence, unheard of to most except the astute historian, presents the foundation for the significance of the study. Additionally, a definition of terms is given in order to help the reader contextualize James's rhetoric. Chapter 2 gives an introduction into the childhood and ministry call of John Angell James. Understanding the historical background in which James formulated his conviction toward domestic piety is paramount. Thorough consideration is given in this chapter to major societal movements and historical issues that made the world in which James lived. Chapter 3 examines James's ministry at Carrs Lane, his personal suffering, his passion for writing and work at shaping congregationalism. James was not only being challenged and shaped by external world events, but every day he was influenced by his church ministry and his times of great suffering. It was not long before his passion for the family and its immortal purpose would become the focal point of many of his writings. Chapter 4 examines James's exhortations regarding domestic piety through his writings and sermons. James had much to say throughout his life directed to fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters. This chapter also demonstrates through James's preaching and writings how his familial focus developed a thorough understanding and ministry practice for parents. Chapter 5 carefully analyzes James's integration of domestic piety and evangelism. James unapologetically admonished domestic piety and his ministry bore the fruit of this emphasis. Chapter 6 offers practical implications that will aid pastors and church leaders in their local church ministries. James's life and ministry in many ways serves as an exemplary model for pastors to follow. There are principles that James embraced that are transferrable to today's pastors who find themselves in similar situations.

Little is known about Korean older migrants and their lives in New Zealand. They are likely to be ‘invisible’ in the community and wider society. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the issue of elder mistreatment and filial piety among Korean immigrant families in New Zealand. The study was designed with a mixed methodological approach that utilised both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Data were collected from three sources: key informant interviews with 20 key informants, a structured survey with 50 older people, and in-depth interviews with 10 abused persons. Data were analysed by employing a two-fold analytical approach. In the primary analysis, concept mapping and SPSS analysis were respectively used to analyse the data collected from qualitative and quantitative studies. Major points of the findings emerged from the secondary analysis in which all data were evaluated by utilising the concept mapping method in an integrated way. Elder mistreatment occurred among Korean older migrants who arrived in New Zealand during their old age. The findings of the study have shown how older people manage their experiences of elder abuse and neglect in the new country. Psychological and emotional effects of elder mistreatment have been highlighted in relation to ‘Hwa-byung’, a culture-bound anger syndrome among victims. The concept of ‘anomic abuse’ has been developed based on the experiences and perceptions of older people who faced difficulties with their offspring because of changes in cultural norms and regulations. The concept of ‘filiality’ is presented as an alternative term to ‘filial piety’ reflecting the emphasis on filial love and emotional closeness between generations in the care of older people. The study has provided a filial justice approach to working with older people as a framework to tackle the problem of elder mistreatment in domestic settings in order to promote the human rights, well-being and health of older people. / Thesis available in print.

M.A. / This qualitative study aimed to research three parent’s experience of a filial therapy programme. An exploratory - descriptive research design was utilised. Case studies were utilised, whereby three parent’s were interviewed using a semi-structured interview schedule of open-ended questions. The interview schedule was verbally administered and was recorded by means of an audio tape-recorder. As a method of verification, a literature control was done to verify the trustworthiness and relevance of the findings. From this, guidelines based on the themes formulated, were discussed, recommendations given based on the guidelines for practice, and further implementation of the filial therapy programme. Carrying out this research was an enlightening experience for the researcher. The respondents, in this study, found the filial therapy programme to be effective in helping them gain a greater understanding of their children and the problems they may be experiencing. The programme outlined for them the importance of their active participation within the therapeutic process. By becoming more involved in the therapeutic process, through the filial therapy programme, parents were able to foster better parent-child relationships. The researcher is of the opinion that the overall purpose of this study was achieved through implementing this programme. The research findings give the researcher and social workers, in the field of family therapy, a clear understanding of the effectiveness of filial therapy as a method of helping families. The researcher urges all social workers to become aware of and equipped with the skills to carry out filial therapy in practice, as a trustworthy method of helping families. / Dr. E. Oliphant

This qualitative study sought to examine the experience of Asian Americans who provide housing and financial support for first-generation biological Asian parents aged 65 and older. Semi-structured interviews regarding how participants came to take care of their parents, the impact it had on close relationships and participants' plans, the impact of cultural background on taking care of their parents, and the positive aspects of caring for their parents were conducted with eight second-generation adult Asians in the U.S. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis and themes were organized around the areas of inquiry. Participants spoke about fulfilling caregiving responsibilities out of love and obligation; the positive and negative impact of caregiving on relationships with parents, siblings, and significant others; the challenges associated with their own decreased independence and the difficulty of seeing parents age; the benefits of the instrumental support that they received from parents and closer grandparent-grandchild relationships; impact on financial and housing plans; and the expectation of non-financial care from their children. Despite living in an individualistic society, participants appeared to endorse values of filial piety by taking care of their parents. Further, the participants' hopes that their children would continue taking care of elderly family members in non-financial ways in the future suggests that while they maintain the cultural value of filial piety, it is being adapted to the reality of living in an individualistic society. Limitations, clinical implications, and directions for future research are discussed. / Master of Science
