Esta topologia é uma tentativa de organizar uma lógica de pensamento que reconheça a transição entre vida e morte, articulada pelas diversas experiências de conflitos e enfrentamentos que perpassam o direito de permanecer em territórios historicamente ocupados e apropriados por esses coletivos / This research aims to highlight, from three ethnographic experiences, some of the manners for the translation of leaders assassinations, respectively union workers, religious, farmers and indigenous, in areas historically marked by intense land conflicts in Brazil: São Geraldo do Araguaia (PA), Ribeirão Cascalheira (MT) and Pesqueira (PE), in order to discuss the transformation/generation of Raimundo Ferreira Lima (Gringo), João Bosco Penido Burnier and Francisco de Assis Araújo (Xicão Xukuru) in the land martyrs and/or enchanted, made present in the pilgrimages arising from these events, the pilgrimages of the martyrs of the walk. The focus of the analysis will be the stories about these leaders "marked for death", which offer us tools to think about how their personal trajectory as well as the threats that preceded the ordered murders of these characters caused other points of view on the death/violence in these spaces of struggle. This topology is an attempt to organize one logic of thought that recognizes the transition between life and death, articulated by various experiences of conflict and confrontation, which underlie the right to remain in the territories historically occupied and appropriated by these collectives

Entre Chegadas e Partidas: DinÃmicas das Romarias em Juazeiro do Norte / Between arrival and departure: dynamics of pilgrimages in Juazeiro

Maria Paula Jacinto Cordeiro 21 June 2010 (has links)
This thesis brings into focus devotion and diversion as seen in pilgrimages in the current century, taking into consideration the process related to the hierarchy of meanings. Beginning with interacting contexts found at pilgrimage scenario in Juazeiro do Norte, CearÃ, this study questions perspective for continuity and change within pilgrimage practices. Among possibilities related to analysis of religious movements by the Social Sciences, notions about tourism and festivity are taken as models for interpretation of pilgrimages attaching them to narratives of experiences by participants. There is a concern in this work to demonstrate how relations among place, events and people involved in the pilgrimages are bound into indissociable elements for apprehension of the phenomenon. The bulk of representations that circulate among participants of the pilgrimage is presented by means of data collected from interviews, questionings and observations. Analysis encompasses identification of practices taken as legitimate values for pilgrimages, taking into consideration relations among the founding myth, the city and the pilgrims, and elements that point to new meanings. The upshot demonstrates that in spite of accumulating through the years other meanings besides the religious one, pilgrimages maintain their major remissive aspect, namely, relating themselves to the institution of the sacred which differentiate them from other formal symbolic repertoires to which participants turn when they desire to demarcate internal limits of belonging. Within the universe of individuals who qualify as pilgrims of Juazeiro do Norte the research points to aspects that indicate change and continuity encompassing traditional practices of pilgrimages. Besides, there is formation of different spaces in order to serve a demand of sociability and diversion among participants and their contribution to re-signify pilgrimages.

Made in Mecca: Expertise, Smart Technology, and Hospitality in the Post-Oil Holy City

Shah, Omer January 2021 (has links)
Under the new Vision 2030 national transformation plan, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia seeks to increase number of annual pilgrims from eight million to thirty million. If oil has certain limits, then pilgrimage is framed as lasting “forever.” But this exuberant claim of “forever” belies a more subtle transformation unfolding at the level of knowledge, technology, and hospitality as Mecca and its crowds are made and re-made into a resource for a national economy. This dissertation examines the Saudi state’s efforts to manage, and ultimately intensify and optimize Mecca’s pilgrimage through new sciences and technologies of crowd management, logistics, and secular hospitality. I demonstrate how these new forms of knowledge production operate in tension with older and decidedly more Islamic ways of knowing, managing, and belonging in the holy city. Instead of approaching religious knowledge and secular knowledge as discrete spheres, my research explores their entanglements and aporias across a range of techno-political practices: navigation, hospitality, urban planning, systems thinking, crowd management, and optimization. Ultimately, I explore how in this moment of ritual intensity, the cosmopolitan logics of the holy city come to be blunted.

The Pilgrimage Phenomenon: An Analysis of the Motivations of Visitors to Temple Square

Knapp, Jill W. 01 January 1989 (has links) (PDF)
Pilgrimage to sacred places of religious meaning has taken place since the early days of mankind. In the last few decades pilgrimage travel has experienced a world-wide boom due to modern means of transportation. Though pilgrimage is most commonly referred to in the context of the major world religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), there is some indication of pilgrimage-like travel among Mormons. This thesis looks at Mormon pilgrimage behavior among Mormon visitors to Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. The study undertaken has revealed considerable differences between Mormon and non-Mormon motivations, behavior and visiting patterns visitors to Temple Square. Though there is no formal doctrine for Mormons concerning pilgrimage, these differences give evidence of pilgrimage-like activity among Mormons, indicating that Mormon visitors to Temple Square are religiously-motivated travelers and a part of a pilgrimage-tourist phenomenon.

Experiential shaping of public space during pilgrimage: the Alandi-Pandharpur Palkhi

Sane, Prajakta, School of Architecture, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
Space perceived and experienced through movement presents an interesting array of imagery which blends together to form a comprehensive whole. My thesis explores this dimension of spatial complexity through the public ritual of pilgrimage. This profound and deeply significant human activity connects the individual places to form an integrated sacred network. The practice of pilgrimage has developed over centuries across the globe and continues to grow and influence a huge cross section of society to come together and move en-masse towards religious centres and personal enlightenment. Public spaces demand a simultaneous co-existence of people, activities and their setting. The phenomenon of pilgrimage is central to the public realm. Its study involves an intricate layering of beliefs, customs, traditions and religion which collectively govern the people-space relationship. The transformation of a space to a place, from static to dynamic, from passive to active occurs during this activity, maintaining the traditional usage while simultaneously evolving as a product of interaction between people, rituals and spaces. In this thesis, I examine the experiential shaping of space which occurs through pilgrims' activities and their impacts on the given urban and architectural conditions. The research is based on my study of the Alandi-Pandharpur Pilgrimage in India. It is an outcome of my participation in the ritual as, both, an architect and a pilgrim. I focus on the existing public spaces and their spontaneous response to the unplanned activity of the Pilgrimage. The spatial experience transcends the criteria of aesthetics and functionality of a public space to a deeper exploration of human characteristics and convictions. From this perspective, the thesis considers the broader role of designed public spaces, the extent of inclusion of community rituals and their significance in the shaping of built environment.

A Carnivalesque Perspective of Graham Swift's Last Orders

Willis, Catherine Jane 07 January 2009 (has links)
Graham Swifts novel Last Orders has yet to be viewed as containing carnivalesque elements as defined by Mikhail Bakhtin in Rabelais and His World. Through the examination of Bakhtins theory of the carnivalesque and through a corresponding close reading of Last Orders, this article details the carnivalesque nature of the locations visited by the characters in the narrative, of the grotesque incidents that occur in these locations, and of the narrative style and structure of the novel itself.
