Barrantes Díaz, Olivia del Carmen 25 April 2001 (has links)
An experimental facility was built-up, for the fumigation of SO2 and O3, independently and mixed. In this facility a study was conducted during two years, about the effects of these pollutants on several aspects of 2.5 year old seedlings of Pinus halepensis. The concentration of nutrients and photosynthetic pigments were measured periodically in the needles. Also, diary cycles of fluorescence emission ad gaseous exchange rates were measured in well watered plants non-watered plants. The height and diameter of the plants were measured along the experiment, and the aerial and root biomass were measured at the end of the experiment. The SO2 affected all the measures performed. The needles showed an accumulation of total sulfur and cations. The effects of the SO2 on the photosynthetic pigment content were not showed until the second year of experimentation, and were not quantitatively very important. The fluorescence emission results showed an increased PSII photochemical efficiency in the SO2 treatment. The net assimilation rates of CO2 were decreased up to 34 % by the effect of SO2. This effect was not related to the decrease of photochemical efficiency of PSII. The SO2 altered the growth and accumulated biomass. This treatment decreased the root biomass and increased the index shoot:root. In spite of the potentially phytotoxic concentrations of O3 used, the effects of this pollutant were minimal. There were no important effects of the O3 in the nutrient concentration of the needles, the photochemical efficiency of PSII and other measured parameter of fluorescence, the photosynthesis rates, the growth and final total biomass. The results obtained didn´t indicate an interaction between the two pollutants, at least with this doses in our experimental conditions. The effects of the mixture of SO2 and O3 were explained by means of the sum of the effects independently in the most part of the studied aspects.

Qasemian, Leila 02 February 2012 (has links)
Par ailleurs les réponses fonctionnelles face à l'apport d'anthracène des communautés microbiennes de litières de pin d'Alep en zone continentale sont différentes de celles des zones littorales / Mediterranean coastal ecosystems are subjected to various natural and anthropogenic environmental pressures which are supposed to be enhanced because of climatic changes. Little is known about microbial community functioning in such ecosystems. Our site of study is located in the Calanques of Marseille, a hot spot of biodiversity. The effect of salinity (via sea spray exposure) on microbial communities and their ability to transform organic matter in an Aleppo pine litter have been studied as well as the potential of autochthonous microorganisms to transform anthracene used as a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon model. To do so, different approaches (in situ, ex situ and in vitro experimental design) were used and we combined various methods such as enzyme activities (laccase, cellulase, phosphatase, lipase), CLPP (Biolog ECO and FF plates), respirometry (basal and induced) and litter chemical characterization (solid-state 13C NMR). Laccases were induced by anthracene in mesocosms and oxidized this compound (with anthraquinone as an intermediate). These enzymes were sequenced by LC/MS/MS to determine the fungal strains responsible for their production. We also found that enzyme activities were not strongly influenced by salinity or anthracene inputs. On the other hand, functional diversity was structured at a small-spatial scale. Moreover, functional responses of microbial communities from inland areas strongly differ from those of coastal areas regarding anthracene inputs since no laccase induction was observed in inland litter.

Broncano Atencia, M. José 25 February 2002 (has links)
Forest fires are the most frequent type of natural disturbance in Mediterranean-type ecosystems (Naveh 1975; Gill et al. 1981; Trabaud 1991). As a consequence of different climatic and social factors, the effect of large wildfires (i.e., fires larger than ca. 1000 ha) has increased in the last years (Greenpeace, 1995; Piñol et al., 1998). Thus, 99.7% of the 5279 wildfires that burned in Catalonia (NE Iberian Peninsula) between 1987 and 1994, were smaller than 1000 ha, but only affected 30% of the total surface. The remainder 16 wildfires (0.3% of the total) were large wildfires which burned 70% of the total surface (Terradas et al., 1996).wildfires are fires of high intensity (Huston, 1994), because they are associated with a continuous and extensive forest cover (Huston, 1994; Turner et al., 1994; Piñol et al., 1998), and environmental conditions characterized by large drought periods and strong winds (Terradas and Piñol, 1996; Turner et al., 1997). These large wildfires may have a double effect on the landscape. On the one hand, large fires are so extensive and so severe in some areas that they destroy forest vegetation independently of its density, age and composition (Christensen et al., 1989; Bessie and Johnson, 1995). The result is that the burned lanscape appears more homogeneous than it has been before the fire, because the heterogeneous vegetation patterns generated by the different succesion pathways are syncronized in large areas (Connell and Slatyer, 1980; Huston, 1994). On the other hand, large fires often result in a heterogeneous mosaic of burn severities as well of islands of unburned vegetation across the landscape (Turner et al., 1994, 1997). In their study on the effects of large fires on landscape heterogeneity in Yellowstone National Park, Turner et al. (1994) show that this pattern depends on fire size. The main factors responsible of this pattern are wind velocity and direction (Eberhart and Woodward, 1987; Fryer and Johnson, 1988). At a smaller spatial scale, several controlling environmental variables, such as air moisture, fuel type and topography, determine the mosaic of fire severities within the burned area (Christensen et al., 1989; Turner et al., 1994; Glitzenstein et al., 1995). At an even smaller scale, that of individual, fire intensity affects the number and characteristics of plants that are partially or totally burnt, and frequently originates a high degree of spatial heterogeneity in plant survival (Christensen et al., 1989; Schullery, 1989). This mortality risk decreases with plant size (Huston, 1994; Johnson, 1992), and depends on fire-resistance mechanisms, inflamability and regenerative strategies of species (McKenzie et al., 1996).Postfire spatial heterogeneity, which is determined by the distribution of burned and unburned areas and by the patterns of fire severity and plant survival, is basic to understand postfire regeneration in the burned areas (Turner, 1998). In this paper, we examine the characteristics and consequences on vegetation of a large wildfire that occurred in Catalonia (NE Spain) in 1994. The main objectives of this study are (1) to relate the spacial heterogeneity generated by fire behaviour with topography and prefire vegetation composition, and (2) to analyze the main survival patterns shown by the dominant tree species of the area, Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) and holm oak (Quercus ilex L.).

Fire recurrence effects on Pinus halepensis Mill. communities of Catalonia

Eugenio Gosalbo, Màrcia 25 October 2006 (has links)
This work assessed the effects of fire recurrence on Mediterranean plant communities dominated by the seeder tree Pinus halepensis (Aleppo pine) at a regional level in Catalonia. It compared structure and floristic composition of plant communities, P.halepensis populations, soil organic horizons and plant growth of three woody species (Q.ilex, P.lentiscus, and R.officinalis) between areas burnt once (in 1994) and twice (between 1975 and 1993, and again in 1994) along 2 decades in the medium term after fire (between 8 and 11 years). A general trend of resilience loss was observed in P.halepensis communities burnt twice at fire intervals shorter than 17 years.

Ecohydrological relationships in pine forests in water-scarce environments

Manrique-Alba, Àngela 18 July 2017 (has links)

Transpiration patterns of Pinus halepensis Mill. in response to environmental stresses in a Mediterranean climate

Larsen, Elisabeth K. 24 May 2021 (has links)
Increased frequency of severe drought events, coupled with rising air temperatures and vapor pressure deficits (VPD), pose a great threat to Mediterranean forests. Pinus halepensis Mill. is one of the most widespread species in the countries surrounding the Mediterranean basin. Thus, water use of this species plays a critical role in the regions water balance. Studying transpiration patterns and the mechanisms behind stomatal responses to the combined effects of changing VPD and soil moisture can help us improve estimation of forest water use in a changing climate. To improve the estimation of forest evapotranspiration in the Mediterranean basin, the objective of this thesis is to evaluate the transpiration patterns of Pinus halepensis and the role of this species in the soil-water balance under different environmental conditions. Two pine forests in the Turia river basin, eastern Spain, were monitored over a two-year period. The two locations were selected at contrasting altitudes and distances to the sea but within the same hydrological basin, to evaluate if this placement would change the relationship between environmental conditions and the water use of the pines. Sap flow measurements were obtained on a 30-minute interval together with soil moisture measurements and meteorological variables. A soil-water balance was performed on a forest plot-level using an eco-hydrological model in combination with the transpiration data, to assess the contribution of pine transpiration to actual evapotranspiration. Transpiration was dictated by changes in VPD, relative extractable water (REW) and the interaction between these two variables at both sites, indicating that the pines depended on water in the shallow soil layers, and this was restricted during large parts of the year. Except for low winter temperatures having a decreasing effect on transpiration only at the inland site, no significant differences were found in the relationship between environmental drivers and transpiration patterns between the two sites. Using a predictive model, sap flow was shown to be restricted on days of mean VPD values of 2.5 kPa, even when soil moisture levels were relatively sufficient (REW = 0.30), indicating a VPD threshold that decreases pine transpiration. This could potentially affect performance and survival of the species with predicted increases in air VPD. Transpiration levels were highly restricted throughout the first year demonstrating that physiological stresses were not limited to summer months. Using two-year old seedlings in an experiment under controlled conditions confirmed that high levels of VPD can have a decreasing effect on transpiration of P. halepensis (in response to instant changes from 1.5 kPa to 2.7 kPa), while there is an intermediate VPD range that increases transpiration (between 1.0 kPa – 1.5 kPa). This demonstrate how important it is to incorporate VPD changes when predicting forest water use under future climatic changes. Combining transpiration data with eco-hydrological modelling demonstrated that transpiration levels accounted for 62% of total ETa levels during two years of study. Interception levels where 32% of gross precipitation, representing a large water loss to the forest ecosystem. With increased frequency of drought events, soil moisture levels are predicted to become even more limited. Together with a rise in temperatures and consequently VPD, transpiration and growth are likely to be constrained.

Lerma Arce, Victoria 29 June 2015 (has links)
[EN] In the framework of a sustainable bio-based economy, this doctoral thesis aims to stimulate sustainable forest management by providing scientific information and guidelines tending to plan and mobilizate bioenergy resources from Mediterranean forests, protect forest ecosystems from forest fires, optimize the carbon balances of the entire bioenergy value chain and finally, contribute to the rural development through employment and richness creation in the renewable energy sector. To achieve these goals, the general objective of this research is to analyse and develop an integral management, planning, logistics and energy valuation model for the forest biomass residues available in the Valencian Province. For that purpose, forest and agricultural crops data in the Valencian Province have been analised by using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and applying selection and sustainable harvesting criteria. Biomass quantity and real available biomass residues have been estimated. Based on a sustainable management, planning, logistics, transformation and biomass use model, eight bioenergy districts have been identified at a supramunicipal level. Representative forest plots have been selected and two harvesting systems, the integrated system (separated use of logs and forest residues) and the whole tree system, have been tested. Subsequently, productivity, costs, environmental impact, carbon emissions and energy balances have been compared and the quality of the obtained chips has been analysed according to European quality norms. In addition, a pilot pellet plant at a laboratory scale has been designed and started and pellets have been fabricated. Finally, pellet quality and influencing variables such as species, tree fraction of the chips and bark presence have been studied together with the maximum amount of bark that quality pellets can tolerate. It has been estimated 28t/ha of residual biomass for the Valencian Province. A total of eight bioenergy districts have been identified, which could provide a in which a sustained supply of high quality biomass. Representative forest plots are those with a pole stage of Pinus halepensis with a canopy cover estimated in between 40-69% at altitudes around 600 m above the sea level, east-southwest dominating aspects and 15% of average slope. The integrated system has proven to be the most suitable for harvesting Pinus halepensis in a pole stage in the Valencian Province due to a higher harvesting productivity, which in turn means lower fuel consumption, lower total costs, higher economic and financial profitability due to the higher value of log woodchips in the market, lower environmental impact due to the need of less manoeuvrability forwarder space with the integrated systems and a lower number of cycles, slightly lower emissions thanks to a lower fuel consumption and finally, a slightly higher energy balance, with an energy contained in biomass that is around ten times the energy necessary for the biomass mobilization and use. In conclusion, it is possible to obtain high quality woodchips from these two harvesting systems (integrated and whole tree system) when moisture and ash content are properly monitored. It is also possible to obtain high quality pellets from barked and debarked logs as well as from branches. This implies that the abundant forest biomass residues in the Valencian Province can be transformed into high added value solid biofuels.

Lado Monserrat, Luis 15 December 2016 (has links)
[EN] Aleppo pine covers a large area in the Mediterranean region, but the effects of silvicultural practices that modify the canopy on the ecology of these forests have been relatively understudied. In this Ph D thesis we assess the effect of silvicultural treatments of different intensities on some key aspects that regulate the soil microclimate and the nutrient dynamics of a P. halepensis forest. The treatments are: shelterwoods of two intensities (60 and 75% of basal area removed, referred to as T60 and T75, respectively) and clearfelling (100% of basal area removed, T100) which were compared with untreated controls (T0). The study was conducted ten years following the implementation of the treatments.. Therefore, we provide useful information to determine its mid-term effects on the ecology of this Mediterranean forest ecosystem. The T100 treatment has caused an increase in soil temperature, and the time series analysis indicates that this treatment has affected both the annual sinusoidal component of variation and the daily fluctuations in the short term. Soil moisture in the summer has been significantly reduced in the T100 treatments. This reduction is due to reduced water infiltration into the soil, which is attributed to an increase in the hydrophobicity or to the creation of surface crusts in the bare soil. The T60 and T75 treatments have not caused significant changes in the soil temperature and moisture dynamics, probably due to the closure of the canopy and to the understory development. The production of litterfall and the associated return of nutrients to the soil (C, N, P, K, Ca and Mg) were linearly reduced with the treatment intensity, with the basal area removed explaining 45-60% of their variation. The exception was K return, which had a lower sensitivity to treatment intensity due to the compensation of the understory litterfall. There has been a slight decrease in the decomposition rate of the P. halepensis needles associated to T100 treatment, as well as alterations in the Ca and K release from the needles. These changes are due to the contamination with soil particles caused by the limited presence of the forest floor in the plots subjected to this treatment. The T60 and T75 treatments have neither significantly affected the litter decomposition nor the associated nutrient release. The soil N mineralization rate in the three silvicultural treatments doubled that of the untreated forest, and this fact seems to be related to the higher proportion of understory litterfall in the treated plots. Overall, soil type has not significantly affected the impact of silvicultural treatments on the ecological processes studied in this work. The results suggest that the mid-term influence of the treatments on microclimate is limited to T100 treatment, and these differences in microclimate do not seem to affect nutrient dynamics. We suggest that studying the dynamics of the understory is necessary to assess the impact of silvicultural treatments on the biogeochemical cycles in these forests. / Lado Monserrat, L. Comparison of parsimonious dynamic vegetation modelling approaches for semiarid climates

Pasquato, Marta 05 December 2013 (has links)
A large portion of Earth¿s terrestrial surface is subject to arid climatic water stress. As in these regions the hydrological cycle and the vegetation dynamics are tightly interconnected, a coupled modeling of these two systems is needed to fully reproduce the ecosystems¿ behavior over time and to predict possible future responses to climate change. In this thesis, the performance of three parsimonious dynamic vegetation models, suitable for inclusion in an operational ecohydrological model, are tested in a semi-arid Aleppo pine forest area in the south-east of Spain. The first model considered, HORAS (Quevedo & Francés, 2008), simulates growth as a function of plant transpiration (T), evaluating environmental restraints through the transpiration-reference evapotranspiration ratio. The state variable related to vegetation is R, relative foliar biomass, which is equivalent to FAO crop coefficient (Allen et al., 1998), but not fixed in time. The HORAS model was then abandoned because of its unsatisfactory results, probably due to a poor simulation of evaporation and transpiration processes. As for the other two models, WUE-model and LUE-model, the state variable is the leaf biomass (Bl, kg dry mass m-2 vegetation cover). Both models simulate gross primary production (GPP), in the first case as a function of transpiration and water use efficiency (WUE), in the second case as a function of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) and light use efficiency (LUE). Net primary production (NPP) is then calculated taking into account respiration. The modelling is focused particularly on simulating foliar biomass, which is obtained from NPP through an allocation equation based on the maximum leaf area index (LAI) sustainable by the system, and considering turnover. An analysis of the information offered by MODIS EVI, NDVI, and LAI products was also performed, in order to investigate vegetation dynamics in the study site and to select the best indices to be used as observational verification for models. MODIS EVI is reported in literature (Huete et al., 2002) to be highly correlated with leaf biomass. In accordance with the phenological cycle timing described for the Aleppo pine in similar climates (Muñoz et al., 2003), the EVI showed maximum values in spring and minimum values in winter. Similar results were found applying the aforementioned WUE- and LUE- models to the study area. Contrasting simulated LAI with the EVI series, the correlation coefficients rWUE = 0.45 and rLUE = 0.57 were found for the WUE-model and LUE-model respectively. Concerning NDVI, its own definition links this index to the ¿greenness¿ of the target, so that it appears highly linked to chlorophyll content and vegetation condition, but only indirectly related to LAI. Photosynthetic pigment concentrations are reported to be sensitive to water stress in Aleppo pine (Baquedano and Castillo, 2006) so, to compare the models¿ results with NDVI, the simulated LAI was corrected by plant water-stress. The resulting correlation coefficients were rWUE = 0.62 and rLUE = 0.59. Lastly, MODIS LAI and ET were found to be unreliable in the study area because very low compared to field data and to values reported in literature (e.g. Molina & del Campo, 2012) for the same species in similar climatic conditions. The performance of both WUE- and LUE- models in this semi-arid region is found to be reasonable. However, the LUE-model presents the advantages of a better performance, the possibility to be used in a wider range of climates and to have been extensively tested in literature. / Pasquato, M.
