A review of the possibility of implementing polyethylene as a polymer additive in Swedish roads

Ekeroth, Sara, Lind, Elvira January 2020 (has links)
This report investigates the possibility to implement plastic waste, specifically polyethylene, as a polymer additive in Swedish asphalt roads. The technique, when applied with waste plastic, is used to a limited extent in other countries and is investigated as a method in order to forward sustainable development by increasing material recycling of plastics. A large quantity of plastics is incinerated for energy recovery in Sweden today and introducing the method would, given that it replaces parts of the energy recovery method, contribute to decrease greenhouse gas emissions derived from fossil materials. Today virgin polymers are used as additives in road materials as well as bitumen that is extracted from crude oil, introducing the method could therefore substitute the outtake of fossil raw materials. In order to obtain the result a literature review was carried out along with interviews with representative experts related to the area. The result presents properties of plastics and how these can beneficially cofunction and integrate with asphalt material. Furthermore, how these properties contribute to adapt the road to climatic changes, achieve overall related demands and how these properties are measured. Negative environmental and health aspects related to the method are also presented. A selection of would-be affected actors are portrayed with regards to competition and synergies as well as overall goals and driving factors related to the method. A large portion of the chapter portraying actors is based on the information collected during the interviews with representatives from the asphalt industry, bitumen manufacturers and the Chemical and innovation companies. The overall outlook on implementing the method in order to forward sustainable development is considered carefully optimistic, due to high requirements on consistent material streams and potential problems that can arise from the implementation. The technique has been proven to be beneficial regarding performance by broadening the available temperature range as well as increasing resistance towards aging, deformation, wear and water. In order to more precisely analyse and make conclusions regarding the method further studies regarding long-time effects in Swedish roads are needed.

Contribuição ao estudo da deformação permanente de misturas asfálticas densas à luz de ensaios de fluência por compressão uniaxial estática e dinâmica / Contribution for the rutting study on hot mixture asphalt by means of static and dynamic creep tests

NG, Andressa Ka Yan 17 January 2013 (has links)
This paper presents a study of rutting on hot mixture asphalt (HMA) by means of static and dynamic creep tests. A full factorial experiment was developed considering factors related to HMA and to the test conditions. It was produced HMA (unmodified (CAP 50/70) and SBS modified binders) specimens at two different air voids (4 and 7%) and with or without hydrated lime. The specimens were submitted to static and dynamic creep tests at two stress levels, 0,1 MPa e 0,4 MPa, and two temperatures, 40 e 50ºC. These conditions of the experimental program allowed to observe the effects of the modifier SBS, the presence of the lime and the air voids in HMA, and to understand the effects of the temperature, stress and the type of loading on the behavior of each type of asphalt mix. The results indicate that (i) the addition of lime promoted reduction of accumulative deformation only in mixtures with conventional binder (CAP 50/70), (ii) mixtures with 7% air voids showed greater accumulation of permanent deformation regardless of presence of lime, the type of load and temperature of the test, mainly for the conventional HMA, (iii) the Polymer Modified Asphalt Hot Mix Asphalt (PMA-HMA) were less sensitive to temperature and the stress variation (iv) the improvement of the polymer modified asphalt mixture characteristics (PMA-HMA) were detected only on dynamic load conditions.

Polymermodifizierte Feinbetone - Untersuchungen zum Feuchtetransport

Keil, Allessandra, Raupach, Michael 03 December 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Durability tests of textile reinforced concrete revealed a loss of strength of the AR-glass reinforcement due to glass corrosion effected by the alkalinity and moisture content of the concrete. In order to reduce this strength loss of AR-glass in cementitious matrices, polymers can be used for concrete modification. The aim of the polymer addition is to reduce the amount of capillary water absorption of the matrix, which reduces the amount of free alkalies closed to the reinforcement. In order to evaluate the effect of the concrete matrix on the durability of TRC, it is necessary to determine the moisture content as functions of time and depth. This data can be obtained by the use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. This paper deals with the moisture transport in a finegrained concrete matrix especially developed for the use in TRC as well as the influence of polymer addition on the water absorption properties of the concrete matrix.

Optimum design for sustainable 'green' overlays : controlling flexural failure

Lin, Y. January 2014 (has links)
The target of the ‘Green Overlays’ research was a cost effective, minimal disruption, sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to the wholesale demolition, removal and complete reconstruction of the existing structural concrete pavement. The important problem of flexural resistance for strengthening concrete pavements with structural overlays has been scrutinised. A new mix design method for steel fibre reinforced, roller compacted, polymer modified, bonded concrete overlay has been proposed. The mixes developed were characterized of high flexural strength and high bond strength with the old concrete substrate. ‘Placeability’ and ‘compactability’ of the mix were two dominant issues during laboratory investigation. An innovative approach for establishing the relationship between Stress and Crack Face Opening Displacement for steel fibre reinforced concrete beams under flexure was developed. In addition, a new and simple method for calculating the interfacial Strain Energy Release Rate of both, a two-dimensional specimen and a three-dimensional model of the overlay pavement system were developed. This method can be readily and easily used by practicing engineers. Finally, a new test specimen and its loading configuration for measuring interfacial fracture toughness for concrete overlay pavements were established. The interfacial fracture toughness of a composite concrete beam, consisted of steel fibre-reinforced roller compacted polymer modified concrete bonded on conventional concrete and undergoing flexure, was assessed. In summary, this thesis presents four key findings: A new mix design method for steel fibre-reinforced roller compacted polymer modified concrete bonded on conventional concrete. A new method for establishing the fibre bridging law by an inverse analysis approach. A new, simplified method for calculating strain energy release rate at the interface of a composite beam. A new, innovative technique for calculating strain energy release rate at the interface of an overlaid pavement. The thesis contains a plethora of graphs, data-tables, examples and formulae, suitable for future researchers.

Estudo do dano por umidade de misturas densas com ligantes asfálticos convencional e modificado com polímero SBS / Study of moisture damage of conventional and polymer modified asphalt mixtures

Anitelli, Andre 12 August 2013 (has links)
This research presents a contribution to understanding hot mix asphalt (HMA) moisture damage susceptibility according to ASTM D 4867 and AASHTO T 283 tests. A full factorial experiment design was carried out considering the factor variations, on two levels: asphalt type (CAP 50/70 and CAP 50/70+SBS), additive presence (with or without hydrated lime) and mixture procedure (short and long term aging). The experimental program resulted in 8 types of asphalt mixes (experimental conditions) which were characterized by the original properties and after a thermal conditioning wich consisted of a freezing phase (-18 °C for 16 hours) and a thawing phase (60 °C for 24 hours). Findings indicate that (i) no one mix was considered susceptible to moisture damage, however the ITR (indirect tensile ratio) of the CAP 50/70 mixes resulted ITR near to protocol admissible values; (ii) in general, CAP 50/70+SBS mixes presented higher resilient modulus, indirect tensile strength and indirect tensile ratio values, (iii) the addition of hydrated lime did not show remarkable changes in original properties, nevertheless it contributed for maintaining or increasing the moisture damage resistance; (iv) short and long term aging procedures (ASTM and AASHTO) did not cause important changes in original properties and after conditioning the mixes showed similar behavior tendencies.

Investigação da relação entre parâmetros da compactação giratória e de deformação permanente em misturas asfálticas densas / Investigation of relationship between the gyratory compaction and rutting parameters of asphalt mixtures

Soares, Jéssica Santiago 08 August 2014 (has links)
This research aims to study relations between compaction and permanent deformation by means of Superpave® gyratory compaction and static and dynamic creep tests. Thus, eight asphalt mixtures were evaluated which were composed by same type (granite) and gradation (dense) of mineral aggregate but two types of asphalt binder (Pen 50/70 AC and Pen 50/70+SBS AC), two different levels of air voids (4% and 7%) and the addition of hydrated lime. Compaction results indicated that curve slopes of 7% air void asphalt mixtures were stronger than the 4% ones, and compaction parameters were sensitive to lime addition and asphalt type change. Static and dynamic creep test results indicated that 4% air void and modified asphalt mixtures presented lower susceptibility to rutting, but, these modified asphalt advantages were observed only in dynamic creep tests. In regard to relation between compaction and rutting parameters, linear models did not fit accurately, excepting some CDI and TDIm ones.
