Tal diversidade é possível, dentre outras coisas, pelas muitas influências estéticas e culturais que compõem os espaços / Abstract: The literary soirees the outskirts of São Paulo became a trend throughout the country. Genuineness and Love: A Study of Feng Menglong's Collection of Mountain Songs (Shan'ge 山歌)

Ye, Yujia 07 November 2016 (has links)
Shan’ge 山歌 is a collection of popular songs in Wu dialect by the late Ming scholar Feng Menglong 冯梦龙 (1574-1646). Due to a lack of detailed literary analysis of the songs, and a lack of appreciation of these songs from the perspective of rhetorical aesthetics, I aim to provide a close reading of the siqing (私情) songs in Shan’ge. With the intention to offer a fresh perspective into the depiction of emotions and sentimental feelings, as well as the various ways of presenting the people’s perception of love and sexual desire in these songs, I endeavor to both enrich the understanding of Shan’ge and call critical attention to the subject mater of siqing. In my thesis, I argue that these Siqing songs are strong spokesmen and representatives of genuineness promoted by Feng Menglong in the preface of Shan’ge. I will examine how genuineness was promoted by the late Ming scholars and particularly, how Feng Menglong views genuineness and how he utilizes genuineness in the songs as a means to promote vernacular literature. The representative siqing songs will be categorized and explored in three sections, with the purpose of answering the following questions: How could Feng’s promotion of these popular songs be situated in the late Ming discourse of genuineness? How does Shan’ge vividly create a world that not only celebrates true and romantic love but also allows the display of the vent of irresistible desire, and the rustic expression of sex? How are carriers of genuine qing explicitly portrayed in these songs through their ingenious conversations and tricks in love affairs? And lastly, how do the songs in different ways showcase a vivid and dynamic picture of a sexually liberate and joy-oriented late Ming Suzhou?

Sovereign Fictions: Self-Determination and the Literature of the Nigeria-Biafra War

Engebretson, Jess January 2021 (has links)
This dissertation explores questions of African literature and international law through the lens of the Nigeria-Biafra war (1967-1970). A defining trauma of modern Nigerian history, the war produced a rich and sustained vein of writing that stretches from the late 1960s through the present day, encompassing canonical Nigerian novels as well as a number of British and diasporic texts. Drawing on both literary and legal theory, I argue that this body of work mobilizes particular literary features—including narrative, analogy, allegory, and genre—to articulate both familiar and innovative logics of sovereignty. The structure of the project is primarily conceptual and loosely chronological. The first half explores narratives of development in relation to international law’s standard of civilization, focusing on British colonial writing (Chapter 1) and postwar allegorical novels (Chapter 2). The second half attends to how narrative fiction formally registers mid-20th century developments in international law, focusing on writers' use of analogy as a mode of theorizing genocide (Chapter 3) and the role of genre fiction in imagining economic sovereignty (Chapter 4). Throughout, I show how novelists pick up and transform literary tropes first articulated in wartime journalism, propaganda, and activist pamphlets.

L'effet-personnage chez Zoyâ Pirzâd et Anna Gavalda, étude comparée / Chracter-effect in Pirzad and Gavalda, comparative study

Rajaeidoust, Samanehsadat 10 December 2018 (has links)
Popular literature is considered to be the most widely read genre in France and Iran. Pirzad and Gavalda are among the most read and translated contemporary writers. These authors belong to two very different worlds and cultures yet they managed to satisfy their foreign readers. Pirzad and Gavalda, like many other contemporary writers, place the character at the center of interests of their stories. They stage characters that are probable and representative of each individual of the society where they live. The protagonists of their novels are mostly women. Their status, characteristics and roles, as well as their inner worlds are developed and deepened over the course of history, in a simple and often dialogical style. The character is highlighted and the novel exists only through him. The ambition of these two novelists is also to give an outline of the social reality of their time. Although they write in the context of two different social and cultural conditions, the two authors represent the same concerns in their writings. Human relations, the woman and her situation in modern society and confrontation of man and woman constitute the essence of their stories. The contemporary feminine figure that Pirzad et Gavalda try to portray in the reader does not always conform to the stereotypical images of Eastern or Western women. Men also take on extraordinary dimension. The reader, sometimes surprised, sometimes satisfied, is constantly urged to renew the image of the woman.

Léo Malet, le poète et le gratte-papier / Léo Malet, the poet and the penpusher

Pérolini, Cédric 03 July 2009 (has links)
This study’s purpose is to survey and analyse Leo Malet’s work. It is mainly devoted to his written productions [more than 5.000 pages…], from Surrealist poems to popular and detective novels. Nevertheless, other artistic fields are not left apart. Because of his taking part in them, or because of his contribution, some films, TV productions or comics are also mentioned. Given the size of this corpus, a guiding thread had to be found, which could deal with the author’s personality as well as his work. The search for unity behind apparent heterogeneity seemed to be the best way to guide the analysis: it thus constitutes the central line of this study. The structure of this work decomposes into seven parts: The first one is devoted to the presentation of the author’s life; it allows to show how autobiographic his work is. The study of his ideological evolution follows, in a second part. The Surrealist period is evoked, because of its importance and of its apparent peculiarity within Malet’s work. Fourth part deals with Malet’s choice to turn towards popular literature. Then it is explained how he provoked a major evolution of the 20th century French detective novel. A survey of his personal style brings to light the specificity of his vision and of his way of writing. The last part eventually analyses Leo Malet’s long-lasting influence in French popular culture.

Orientador: Sidney Chalhoub / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-11T21:12:48Z (GMT). / Abstract: This study examines literature of crime that circulated in the city of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo between 1870 and 1920. The analysis done here is based on the assumption that readers, editors and authors had a common interest in the publishing feuilletons and novels that had crime as the main theme. These narratives, published by a number of newspapers, typographers, and editors, are analyzed here taking into account their production and circulation context. Here the construction of one variety of literature of crime is examined considering two aspects: its relationship with an international literary phenomena of the nineteenth century, and its relationship with the press, which continued to be a close one. / Doutorado / Historia Social / Doutor em História
