This thesis proposes a reading of Silent dancing:a partial remembrance of a Puerto Rican childhood, by Judith Ortiz Cofer, and aims at investigating the process of its narrator’s identity, a bicultural subject shuttling between Puerto Rico and the United States of America, which develops into a transcultural identity. Besides examining the narrator’s transformation from a “cultural chameleon” into a “transcultural dragon”, the research analyzes its autobiographical aspect, the overlapping of the English and Spanish languages and also the mixture of narratives and poems present in the book.

Détermination des constantes de temps des processus d'altération et de transfert sédimentaire par les nucléides des séries de l'U : étude d'un bassin versant de Porto Rico et du système himalayen / Determination of weathering processes and sediment transfer time constants from uranium series nuclides : study of a watershed in Puerto Rico and the Himalayan system

Blaes, Estelle 10 September 2013 (has links)
This thesis proposes to define the time-scales of weathering processes on a spheroidal weathering profile, (Rio Icacos watershed, Puerto Rico ) and the transfer time of sediments within alluvial plains (Ganges and Brahmaputra basins). This issue is addressed through the analysis of the nuclides of the 238U decay chain. The study of a spheroidal weathering system developed on the site of Puerto Rico permit to develop a limited memory quasi-Newton algorithm in order to solve the system of equations that reflects the behavior of nuclides and the rate of formation of the saprolite and the rindlet zone. For the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins, sediments were collected from different tributaries and their outlets. The variation of 238U - 234U - 230Th disequilibria in the sediments, with different variation trends for suspended and coarse-grained sediments, is probably a general feature of all Himalayan rivers flowing across the Indo-Gangetic plain. For this work, we have shown the usefulness of including the analysis of 226Ra analysis of other nuclides in the chain of radioactive decay of 238U (238U - 234U - 230Th) to determine the weathering rate in a well-defined system. Nevertheless, the study of the Brahmaputra system shows that proposed method needs to be refined as the sediment transfer is a complex process due to the mineralogical variability, size and (local) dynamics of sediments samples collected.

In the last decade, especiallyin the beginning of the 21stcentury, it has been observed a raiseof spaces and visibility of the “maracatus-nação” from Pernambuco, not only in such state, but also in otherparts of Brazil. In this context, where the manifestation has become, among several things, a tourist attraction, we have noticed that, categories such as religion, tradition and evenafricanity have become recurrentvalues in the groups, values that, in a way, gives them authenticity. Despite the recurrenceof such values, the way each group operateswith them is diverse, creating a series of particular aspects, and contributing to the construction of their identities. The present research has as an objective, the comprehension of the identity construction process of the members from “Nação do Maracatu Porto Rico”, one of the most famous maracatus-naçãoin Recife. In order to reach this objective, we intend to analyzethe rituals and their symbolism operated by the group, which has the religiosity as a strong feature thatmost times holds its choices and attitudes. The research will also analyzethe groups origin narrative, which can also be understood as a myth, been reaffirmed on celebrations, songs anddiscourses made by the liderances and other members of the Nação do Maracatu Porto Rico.
