Life on the margins : the autobiographical fiction of Charles Bukowski

Bigna, Daniel, Humanities & Social Sciences, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2005 (has links)
Charles Bukowski devoted his writing career to turning his own life into poetry and prose. In poems and stories about his experiences as one of the working poor in post war America, and in those depicting his experiences as a writer of the American underground, Bukowski represents himself as both a literary and social outsider. Bukowski expresses an alternative literary aesthetic through his fictional persona, Henry Chinaski, who struggles to overcome his suffering in a world he finds absurd, and who embarks on a quest for freedom in his youth to which he remains committed all his life. This thesis examines Charles Bukowski's autobiographical fiction with a specific emphasis on five novels and one collection of short stories. In the novels, Post Office (1970), Factotum (1975), Women (1978), Ham on Rye (1982) and Hollywood (1989), and in a number of short stories in the collection Hot Water Music (1983), Bukowski explores different periods of Chinaski???s life with a dark humour, revealing links between Chinaski???s struggle with the absurd and those aspects comprising Bukowski???s alternative aesthetic. The thesis focuses on such aspects of Bukowski???s art as the uncommercial nature of his publishing history, his strong emphasis on literary simplicity, the appearance of the grotesque and Bukowski???s obsession with nonconformity, drinking and sex. These aspects illuminate the distinctive nature of Bukowski???s art and its purpose, which is the transformation of an ordinary life into literature. This thesis argues that Bukowski illuminates possibilities that exist for individuals to create an identity for themselves through aesthetic self-expression. The thesis traces the development of Chinaski's non-conformist personality from Ham on Rye, based on Bukowski's youth in Los Angeles during the Depression, to Hollywood, Bukowski's ironic portrayal of Chinaski's brush with the commercial film industry. Through meeting the many challenges he faced throughout his life with defiance, honesty and an irreverent sense of humour, Bukowski invites readers to identify with his alternative world view. The thesis argues this particular aspect of his writing constitutes his most valuable contribution to twentieth century American fiction.

Prosazování inspiračních zdrojů asijského divadla ve tvorbě Jiřího Frejky / Asian Inspirations in the Works of Jiří Frejka over Time

Burešová, Denisa January 2018 (has links)
Traditional Asian theatre genres have fascinated western audiences since the end of the 19th century. In my thesis, I focused on the means by which Jiří Frejka, a leading representative of Czech avant- garde theatre, dealt with that trend. Through Japanese, Chinese and Indian texts, he verifies new possibilities of all elements of theatre production - the stage, music and, primarily, the actor and his voice and movement. Thanks to prompt books, photographs, reviews and other materials from Frejka's estate stored in the National Museum, the archive of the National Theatre and the Moravian Museum in Brno, I assess these individual elements of theatre production in connection with traditional Asian genres and I seek mutual parallels, sources of inspiration and, primarily, the manner in which Frejka adapted them to his own directorial work. The objective of this work is to confirm the previous thesis that, in the case of Jiří Frejka, deeper study of the topic led to a fundamental shift in the manner of bringing these "foreign" sources of inspiration into the Czech environment, which moved away from a merely decorative function toward an internally linked and well-founded method. Key words Czech theatre avant-garde, Asagao, Modern Studio, Lady Precious Stream, Shakuntala, The Post Office

No. of bitstreams: 1 4041.pdf: 3533641 bytes, checksum: 8338b6abff98c399bfcbf5c9717632ee (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-12-16 / This research, compiled from the theoretical foundation in the areas of Ergonomics and Design, takes as object of study the social process of designing in a postal company, in which aims at producing knowledge and assisting with new project practices in the context of Ergonomics. The problem focused the linkage between Ergonomics, Project, and Use detailed by a social process of designing that highlight the question of how conflict of values are materialized in technical devices from the variables and its demonstration of use. The evaluation of the results, aims at redeeming the relationships between the actors and conflicts of meaning repercussions on the construction of the artifact. There were highlighted the conflict of values (matters relating the actors and their relationships), conflicts of variables (questions relating to the project options and interfaces of communication within the group) and inadequacies of use (questions relating to the quality of the object from its use) as means of social structure analysis, the spaces of this practice and obstacles to its achievement were accentuated. The role of the coordinator of the social process of project as a negotiator and interfaces employed as means of language were highlighted as well. In conclusion, the results of the social process-centric approach in the context of Ergonomics can approximate project and use, integrating in the public sphere the phases of the Ergonomic Work Analysis and designing activities. Considering this, the results of this process is not the materialization of technical devices as an end, but as resources capable to bring flexibility and significance to the activity of work, seeking to perceive and conceive the object in use manifestation, i.e., in its social function, including the different aspects that form it.

The impact of inbound logistics activities on the operational performance of the postal services organization in South Africa

Tabeni, Mvelo January 2006 (has links)
Introduction and Relevant Details: This research investigates the impact of inbound logistics' activities on the operational performance of the business within the branches of the South African Post Office (SAPO) in the Eastern Cape Province. The study basically hypothesises a statistically significant positive correlation between inbound logistics' activities and the operational performance of the business with regards to revenue generation and operational costs in particular. A sample of 100 branch offices was randomly selected. A 50-item questionnaire was administered by mail to the branches to collect the data during September 2005, and statistical tests for correlation were conducted on at least five dependent variables; stock procurement costs, effects on revenue, number of stock variation occurrences, order variation occurrences and the stock holding effects. Results of Data Analysis: The results of 88 respondents (88%) showed the existence of the significant positive relationship between the inbound logistics activities and the operational performance of the business at the South African Post Office branches as proposed by the study. The Spearman Rank Correlation tests were above 0.7 for most of the tested variables, showing a strong relationship. The inbound logistics' activities were also found to be positively correlated to revenue generation as well as to the operational expenses of the business. Conclusion and Recommendations: The findings allowed the researcher to conclude also that whatever improvements are made to the inbound logistics will also impact on the operational performance of the business, while failures in the inbound logistics will do so negatively. Business endeavours to maximise revenue and minimise costs are directly affected by the inbound logistics' activities. The branches of the SAPO seemed to be dissatisfied with most of the services rendered by the Supply Distribution Centre (SOC) of the SAPO, and such services have negatively affected the achievement of revenue targets at the branches as well as the operational costs. Holistic approaches to developing positive perceptions in the branches together with improving service activities at the SOC are recommended. Collaborative initiatives between branches and the SOC, reviewing the lead-times and the establishment of proper structures to handle supply chain queries, enhanced by information system technology to provide accurate and up-to-date information to branches and related parties about stock order issues are required . Areas of further research highlighted include the inbound logistics' activities of the SOC and the effectiveness of company policies as a guide to Supply Chain Management (SCM).

Brev Till Tomten : En narrativ undersökning hur medier, grupper, vuxna och barn socialiserar Jultomten 1960–1979 / Letters to Santa : A narrative survey of how the media, groups, adults, and children socialize Santa Claus 1960–1979

Claes, Gavelius January 2022 (has links)
Abstract Introduction: This master’s thesis examines how narrative development is socialized in Swedish letters and postcards to Santa Claus. The letters are from the previously unanalyzed archive collection Letters to Santa, and the years between 1960s and 1970s have been analyzed. A part of the collection consists of work materials and letters written to Santa Claus by Swedish children and adults. The collection was coordinated by the organizationPosttomten which was led by Elsa Holst.Method: The study uses a narrative and socialization analysis. Which is combined with an observation of the areas where the organization was active during the 1960s and 1970s. Analysis: The thesis has studied six volumes with Swedish letters and work materials from the 1960s and 1970s from Postmuseums archive, newspaper articles from the same time period, Posthuset on Skansen and Östra Varvsgatan 4 in Djurgårdsstaden Stockholm where the organization was active. This subjects have also beenobserved and discussed in the analysis. The theories narrative and socialization are used to explain how the sender perceives Santa Claus, what general rules they use in their letters, how they write to get in contact with him, how he is used by the organization, individuals, and other groups. Results: Why someone are using or want to contact Santa Claus depends on what they want to achieve. Adults want to help or learn thier child the basic structures and general rules to write a letter or a postcard to Santa Claus. This is a way for adults to keep the lie of Santa Claus alive for thier children. Some adults even thank the people behind Posttomten for thier work, in the letters. The child on the other hand. They write their letters or postcards to get Christmas presents. Tell him that they have been kind. Admiting mistakes and remind Santa Claus about their existence so that he does not forget them. The letters and postcards are also a way to get an answer if Santa really exists. Different groups also use Santa Claus in the media to improve their own reputation. For example the organization behind Posttomten and the Swedish Post Office use Santa Claus to tell everybody about thier own organization. For instance, to tell about what company they are, give proof that Santa Claus exists and to give the organization a better reputation. Conclusion: The letters and postcards, news articles, work materials and the two observations. They expose a narrative and socialization, that gives Santa Claus many different sides. For example where does he live? What is his name? What does he look like? His personality? These are important elements in making Santa to a real person when Posttomten and Santa Claus are perceived as the same person. The natural way is namely to give Elsa Holst the title as the real Santa Claus. This because she fits in the social expectation and ideal to the narrative that Santa Claus has been given. With the help from parents, the Swedish post office, media and teachers itbecomes possible to make the conclusion that they made it possible for everybody to discover that Santa Claus was Elsa Holst. The effect of knowing that Elsa Holst was Santa Claus made it easier for the organization to get assistance and a positive opinion about Santa Claus, When she died it becomes clear that the organization was depended on Elsa Holst too much. Because no one else was ready to take over the role as Santa Claus or the leadership in the organization all the work was ended. The Swedish post office took the control over Santa Claus. The result lead to a negative backlash in the Swedish community because the narrative, the ideals and the tradition did not fit in the Swedish post office organization. That could had been the end but it did not stop the organization and Posttomten to continue their work in a new place in the beginning of the 1980s. This is a two years master's thesis in Archival science.

Dieter Kober: (* 1920, † 2015): Der Weg vom Ritchie-Boy zum Musikdirektor und Dirigenten des Chicago Chamber Orchestra

Schönfuß-Krause, Renate 21 December 2022 (has links)
Dieter Kober (* 2. Jan. 1920 Halberstadt; † 1.
