A re-conceptualisation of contemporary sculptural ceramics practice from a post-minimalist perspectiveTuxill, Wendy Patricia January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the extent to which the 1960s process art strand of post-Minimalism can provide an analytical template for critical writing around contemporary ceramic art. A dearth of critical writing is an acknowledged problem in all types of ceramics practice and some of the reasons for this situation will be explored. In the past decade frequent calls have been made by artists, critics, academics, and curators for a body of critical writing to underpin contemporary work and connect with wider cultural debates. During this period, artists have begun to use the process of making the work to form part of the content. Such work has no relationship to traditional studio pottery, and critics have described it as difficult to write about and classify in normative ceramic terms. However, this area of ceramic practice shares characteristics with post-Minimalism, a movement of the 1960s that emphasised the behaviour of materials and the act of making. In The Archaeology of Knowledge the French philosopher Michel Foucault suggests that a new critical language may emerge from the appropriation of other discourses, providing new interpretations for subject areas not yet theoretically mapped out. Foucault’s notions on the formation of discourse are used as a methodological approach to investigate how process-led sculptural ceramics may be articulated by an understanding of post-Minimalist critical writings. A substantial body of critical writing developed around post-Minimalist process art, providing a context for radical new approaches which broke with modernist traditions and which expanded and changed traditional definitions of sculpture. Key post-Minimalist texts are investigated as an analytical template for a new critical discourse for process-led ceramic art. A study of the sculptural ceramics of Richard Deacon and Kosho is undertaken as a means of identifying process-led tendencies and the possibility of a re-conceptualisation from a post-minimalist perspective. An analysis of the role of process within my own practice is used to provide visual evidence of contemporary ceramic work that can be re-conceptualised from a post-Minimalist perspective. After twenty years of stagnant debate in the ceramics field, this research might provide a new critical context for process-led ceramic art. The project shows a way that artists may be empowered to develop a critical literacy in a field that has traditionally lacked a research based approach. It is hoped that it may well encourage other ceramics practitioners to explore new ways of presenting an academic critique of their own area of practice. The contribution to knowledge identifies a new critical context and approach to writing for the process-led area of ceramics practice that is currently described as being difficult to write about, as having no appropriate critical language of its own, and of being difficult to categorise in standard ceramic terms.

On Yonder MountainWalter, Christopher D 06 May 2012 (has links)
The road to becoming an artist is paved with much confusion as we try to mold our brains into understanding abstract concepts and ideas. I became fascinated with how people perceive art, in particular, southern males that have no previous knowledge of art history or desire to learn. I contemplated long and hard about this and asked myself the question, “What if they did want to understand art?” The only difference between my brethren and I is this desire to pursue this seemingly foreign world. By creating an imaginary world and culture based on my own southern upbringing I have created a series of figurative paintings exploring various contemporary art themes in an effort to clarify my own understanding of the two worlds I am closest to and how they may or may not be related.

PLACE TO FORGIVEVainio, Sabrina January 2018 (has links)
A text about the difficulties of letting go of worries and forgiving oneself. This is discussed through the practice of mindfulness and the ritual as an artistic process. Dedicating time and acknowledging the present generates presence, visible in the artistic objects. The method of Collage reflects this through piece by piece building stronger artwork and a stronger self.

Prägnanz for OrchestraSimpson, Robert R. 01 January 2008 (has links)
Prägnanz is a single movement composition for orchestra. This composition reflects the influence of minimalist composers such as Phillip Glass and Steve Reich. The structure of the piece is generated by a rhythmic motive that is transformed through a large-scale additive process. This overarching process is periodically interrupted by contrasting episodes, creating a form similar to a rondo. Several themes and gestures are explored, including a phasing rhythmic motive. The harmonic language is static, almost monolithic, in order to accentuate the gradual motion of the piece towards its goal. The title comes from Gestalt psychology; the Law of Prägnanz describes how the mind perceives simplicity within the complexity of reality. This tendency is mirrored in the piece through the focus on the central motivic transformation in spite of the complexity of contrasting themes, orchestrations, and gestures.

Repetitive Acts NowPeacock, Leigh K, Ms. 13 May 2011 (has links)
This paper explains at the intersection of Memory theory, Feminist Theory, Existential Psychology, Faith and Contemporary Art, I have found a way to embrace and integrate memories and experiences into my art and be a more fully integrated, emotionally healthy person living fully in the present moment. I articulate my exploration of the broad concept of memory and addressing unresolved negative memories in order to realize healthy change in forming my identity.
Through art and philosophical research I have found substantial corroboration, conceptually supporting my information supporting my Post Minimal art making process. I employ memory evoking materials through the use of repetitive acts and strict self-imposed rules throughout the art making process, communicating ne living in the present moment, embracing yet uninhibited by their past.

Previous issue date: 2009-03-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation presents a study of the works Brasil 2000 Op.12, Amanduá and Meio Bossa for piano solo, of the composer Dimitri Cervo (Santa Maria, 1968). The focus of the research was to realize an analytical study of compositional procedures and, based on this study, to present technique-interpretive criteria and suggestions to be applied during the preparation of the mentioned work. Both the criteria and the
suggestions of instrumental realization were prepared considering elements of musical construction and the sound result expected by the interpreter. Having in mind that, in the chosen work, there are compositional resources of minimalist and postminimalism nature, like the huge amount of ostinatos and repetitive musical patterns, those, if studied in the wrong way, can favor the appearance of muscle damage and
other discomforts that prejudice, the interpreter s health and still more the sound result. Based on these observations, strategies were organized to optimize the process of study in specific situations of execution. In order to reach this objective, recent bibliographies and research about pianistic technique that have the adaptation of the body movement to the resolution of musical questions were consulted, like the
Movement Cycles (PÓVOAS, 1999), a resource of flexibilization of the movement and discussed concepts related to it that were applied to the execution of Brasil
2000, Amanduá and Meio Bossa. Contributions about the application of the study and analytical research in the musical-instrumental practice were also related to this work. In the beginning biographical data about the composer and general aspects about his journey and his compositional esthetics are presented. In the sequence the compositional procedures that are more used in the present works are identified and
analyzed and the criteria with technique-interpretive suggestions that can be used as an orientation during the preparation and execution of them are proposed. It is
expected that this piece of research can contribute to the literature related to musical analysis as a tool for the interpretive practice. This research can integrate the list of
more recent research in the sub-area of interpretive practice, utilizing concepts that relate the analysis of compositional elements to the pianistic technique, aiming at the interpretation of national composers cotemporaneous work. The interpretive decisions and criteria presented here can be adopted in the pedagogical practice of these and other works that present similar characteristics to the ones studied here / Esta dissertação apresenta um estudo das obras Brasil 2000 Op.12, Amanduá e Meio Bossa para piano solo, do compositor Dimitri Cervo (Santa Maria, 1968).
