Abstract: Case study of mishaps involved in the implementation of municipal policies on education, with emphasis on continuous training of teachers in the initial grades of elementary school in the municipality of Paripueira - Al, in the period from 2001 to 2007. The idea of this research came from the personal experiences and professional researcher to act as educational coordinator, teacher from the initial series of elementary school and above, as union leader. For data collection were used official documents of the Court of Accounts of the State of Alagoas, the Union of Education Workers of Alagoas - SINTEAL, Official Gazette of the State, among other sources referred to as documented by Expeleta & Rockwell (1986). To these are added not only non-documented sources expressed in 13 semi-structured audio-recorded with teachers, staff / os, coordination and direction of the educational system of the school council, but the field notes and redemption of own experience of teacher-researcher. The empirical material was organized and codified through inventory data, submitted to triangulations after descriptive analysis, and finally examined from a broader categories. Contextualized in the neoliberal policies that marked the moment analysis, but trying to sort them in the specific conditions of public education in the Brazilian state of Alagoas, the data collected to analyze the possible actions in this policy formulated by the municipal public education over the period. It was also possible to understand and are being experienced / characterized the public policies that are present in the daily / education professionals. The voices in the research show that the implementation of public policies of the period investigated does not meet the interests of / the worker / s or education of the population that needs it. For this analysis, it was essential to understand how to develop public policies maintained through force of local and political relations based on old oligarchic and coronelísticas still present in the organization of the State apparatus in Alagoas in that period. This research was conducted in the Group of Studies and Research in Continuing Education - GEPEC and financed by the International Program for post-graduate scholarships from the Ford Foundation. / Mestrado / Ensino, Avaliação e Formação de Professores / Mestre em Educação

A sedução interrompida : sexualidade e poder em narrativas árabe-muçulmanas sobre a circuncisão feminina / The interrupted seduction : sexuality and power in Arab-Muslim narratives on female circumcision

Venchi, Mariane 27 March 2008 (has links)
Orientador: Mariza Correa / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-10T20:27:16Z (GMT). This study of anthropological nature regards agressive practices imposed upon the feminine body in Muslim and Arab societies, namely genital cutting operations on women performed not for therapeutic reasons but to comform to an anatomical ideal compatible with specific cultural patterns. Conceptions like modesty, promiscuity and feminine sexuality shown in the sources suggest that social relations in which race and gender act out, cannot be dramatized outside a scenario which involves not only a religious language of conversion to whom is an insider (believer), an outsider (unbeliever) and those located in states of ¿pollution¿ (apostate), but also in the cultural conversion between masculine/feminine inside the boundaries of the nation as well as the problematic relation with the West in which meaning is given in terms of postcolonialist context. On the anthropogical point of view the practice of female circumcision ¿ especially excision and infibulation would be partially left or completely left out of the ethnographies as theoretical or political subjects. However, when that subject appears in anthropological settings, the theme sets dialogs among external interlocutors, as the press, NGO¿s and feminists movements. Additionally, such study brings into consideration ethical issues inside anthropology stablishing a dialog to its primordial concept which is ¿culture¿ and its inevitable proximity with the concepts of ¿history¿ and ¿social and symbolic change¿ which are fundamental issues in studies concerning opressive practices and gender relations / Doutorado / Sexualidade, Genero e Corpo / Mestre em Antropologia Social

Da teoria social à modernidade = reflexividade, poder e práxis no pensamento de Anthony Giddens / From social theory to modernity : reflexivity, power and praxis in Anthony Gidden's thought

Desse modo, abordo o diagnóstico giddensiano da modernidade como uma nova configuração da práxis social em que os princípios ontológicos da práxis são remodelados. O trabalho se organiza em cinco capítulos: no primeiro capítulo, situo o pensamento de Anthony Giddens na teoria social; no segundo capítulo, descrevo e analiso os conceitos fundamentais da teoria da estruturação; no terceiro capítulo, analiso os conceitos fundamentais da práxis giddensiana; o quarto capítulo trata do tempo-espaço e da mudança social; o quinto capítulo refere-se à modernidade e a reestruturação da práxis / Abstract: This research aims to demonstrate the centrality of social praxis in the structuration theory of Anthony Giddens and the fundamentation of this conception in flexible ontological principles: the transformative human capacity and the reflexivity. Thus, I analyze the Giddens?s diagnosis of modernity as a new social configuration of social praxis in which the ontological principles of praxis are refurbished. The research is organized in five chapters: in the first one, I situate Anthony Giddens in social theory; in the second one, I describe and analyze the fundamental concepts of structuration theory; in the third one, I analyze the fundamental concepts of the giddensian praxis; the fourth chapter deals with the time-space and social change; the last chapter refers to modernity and the restructuration of social praxis / Mestrado / Sociologia / Mestre em Sociologia

Fostering Strengths in Incarcerated Youth: The Development of a Measure of Psychological Empowerment in Oregon Youth Authority Correctional Facilities

Patterson, Lindsey Brianna 13 August 2013 (has links)
Research on juvenile offender treatment and intervention has called for a shift from a deficits-based to a strengths-based approach (Marshall, Ward, Mann, Moulden, Fernandez, Serran, & Marshall, 2005; Wormith, Althouse, Simpson, Reitzel, Fagan, & Morgan, 2007; Zeldin, 2004). One potential approach to treatment fosters a sense of psychological empowerment in youth. Although research has yet to explore the experience of psychological empowerment within incarcerated youth, theory on empowerment suggests that it could help youth to create both cognitive (e.g., increased self-esteem, increased confidence) and behavioral (e.g., improving quality of life, social integration) changes in their lives (Cargo, Grams, Ottoson, Ward, & Green, 2003; Holden, Crankshaw, Nimsch, Hinnant, & Hund, 2004a). Empowerment-based programming may also help youth develop specific psychosocial capacities, such as competence, confidence, and self-efficacy, which are necessary skills for future success and community reintegration. The purpose of the current study was to establish a measure of psychological empowerment (PE) and explore potential behavioral correlates of PE for young men within Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) correctional and re-entry facilities. Using a cross-sectional, non-experimental design, quantitative data from self-report surveys of incarcerated youth on PE in three settings within correctional facilities as well as OYA staff ratings of behavioral success in five skill areas was collected. Confirmatory factor analyses did not support the three-factor structure of PE. A single-factor structure of Intrapersonal PE was found to fit the data in three correctional settings. The present study has implications for the reconceptualization and reoperationalization of psychological empowerment in this unique context. Using the confirmed sub-scale, results of hierarchical linear models indicated that Intrapersonal PE was a significant predictor of behavioral success in two of the five OYA domains. Even with an imperfect operationalization of PE, there was partial evidence for the predictive ability of Intrapersonal PE.

On the anatomy of power : bodies of knowledge in South African socio-medical discourse

Butchart, Robert Alexander 07 1900 (has links)
Derived from a marxist/liberal humanist view of power, conventional critiques and historical accounts of the socio-medical sciences in South Africa see only their power to repress and negate the true bodily attributes and authentic person of the African. In so doing, they ignore the productive capacity of these knowledges and practices as a manifestation of what Michel Foucault termed "disciplinary" power, by which the human body is manufactured and made manageable as an object of medical knowledge and industrial utilisation. Accordingly, this thesis offers just such a Foucaultian reading of western socio-medical knowledge in South Africa to demonstrate how it has operated to fabricate the bodies of Africans as visible objects possessed of distinct attributes that have provoked particular strategies for their surveillance, management, and government in health and disease. / Psychology / D. Letters to the emperor : epistolarity and power relations from Cicero to Symmachus

Creese, Maggi January 2007 (has links)
Traditionally Latin prose letters have been classified in one of two ways: often they are seen as historical documents to be mined for political, historical and social information; otherwise they are viewed as literature, to be read with a consideration of the role of rhetoric and persuasion. These letters are only rarely approached as letters, and classical scholars have only just begun to discover the benefits of applying epistolary theory to these texts. My thesis examines epistolary exchange within the context of Roman power relations, offering a new interpretation of the correspondences between the most powerful political figure in a given period and one from among the senatorial class. Cicero, Pliny the Younger, Fronto and Symmachus each conducted an epistolary exchange with a powerful figure with whom he hoped to gain influence, and despite the significant differences between them in terms of political and social circumstances, each uses his letters in similar ways to that end. I approach these texts, never before treated together in a comparative study, with a consideration of epistolarity, ‘the use of the letter’s formal properties to create meaning’, a concept developed by J. G. Altman (1982). These properties are identified and examined by means of detailed stylistic analysis of the Latin text. The act of writing a letter is an act of self-definition; the sender constructs a self defined necessarily in relation to a particular addressee. Thus the letter also affords a sender the opportunity to define the You, to whom he addresses himself. In the context of power relations in Roman politics, the letter then becomes a flexible tool of self-fashioning, by which a senator may attempt to influence the emperor.

Female Athletic Directors' Perceptions of Position Power

Lewis, Leigh Garnet 05 1900 (has links)
This study sought to determine female college and university athletic directors' perceptions of position power according to selected job-related characteristics, through development and use of a nineteen-item survey instrument. The study was conducted during the 1991-1992 academic year and consisted of an initial study to determine content validity of the survey instrument, followed by construct validity and reliability determination utilizing a pilot study group of twenty female intercollegiate athletic directors.
