Intangible Qualities of Rare Books: Toward a Decision-Making Framework for Preservation Management in Rare Book Collections, Based Upon the Concept of the Book as ObjectSheehan, Jennifer Karr 05 1900 (has links)
For rare book collections, a considerable challenge is involved in evaluating collection materials in terms of their inherent value, which includes the textual and intangible information the materials provide for the collection's users. Preservation management in rare book collections is a complex and costly process. As digitization and other technological advances in surrogate technology have provided new forms representation, new dilemmas in weighing the rare book's inherently valuable characteristics against the possibly lesser financial costs of surrogates have arisen. No model has been in wide use to guide preservation management decisions. An initial iteration of such a model is developed, based on a Delphi-like iterative questioning of a group of experts in the field of rare books. The results are used to synthesize a preservation management framework for rare book collections, and a small-scale test of the framework has been completed through two independent analyses of five rare books in a functioning collection. Utilizing a standardized template for making preservation decisions offers a variety of benefits. Preservation decisions may include prioritizing action upon the authentic objects, or developing and maintaining surrogates in lieu of retaining costly original collection materials. The framework constructed in this study provides a method for reducing the subjectivity of preservation decision-making and facilitating the development of a standard of practice for preservation management within rare book collections.

Sorghum phenolic extracts : their storage stability and antioxidant activity in sunflower oilSikwese, Fred Edington 21 July 2008 (has links)
Whole grain and bran samples of two Malawian sorghums, Phatafuli, (a brown-coloured condensed tannin variety) and Shabalala, (a white-coloured condensed tannin-free variety) were analysed for their content of total phenols, condensed tannins and antioxidant activities. The effect of oxidizing conditions during extraction, and the storage stability of a freeze-dried crude phenolic extract (CPE) from the condensed tannin sorghum bran as influenced by packaging, storage temperature and length of storage, in relation to its content of total phenols, condensed tannins and antioxidant activity was also investigated. Antioxidant activity of the CPE, in comparison with tertiary butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), was then evaluated in sunflower oil at concentrations of 1000, 1500 and 2000 ppm in the absence or presence of ferric ions at 2.2 and 4.4 ppm in the dark at 65oC.Progression of oxidation was monitored by measurement of peroxide values (PV) and anisidine values (AV) during a 14-day storage period. Phatafuli contained higher content of total phenols and antioxidant activity than Shabalala both in the whole grain and the bran, probably due to the presence of condensed tannins in Phatafuli sorghum, which were not detected in Shabalala sorghum. For both sorghum varieties, the bran contained higher levels of total phenols and antioxidant activity than the whole grain, confirming that phenolic compounds in sorghum are largely concentrated in the bran. Antioxidant activities of the sorghum varieties correlated highly with their total phenol and condensed tannin contents, suggesting that the phenolic compounds were largely responsible for the antioxidant activities of the sorghum grains. Bubbling of oxygen into the liquid crude phenolic extract did not have any significant effect on the parameters tested. Similarly, vacuum-packed samples did not differ significantly in the parameters tested from the samples that were not vacuum-packed. CPE samples stored at –20oC had significantly higher levels of total phenols, condensed tannins and antioxidant activity than those stored at 25oC during some days of storage. Storage time was however the major factor influencing the levels of total phenols, condensed tannins and antioxidant activity of the CPE from Phatafuli sorghum during storage, which suggested that CPE from condensed tannin sorghum bran might need to be used shortly after extraction to ensure optimum antioxidant activity. There was an insignificant correlation between the antioxidant activities of the CPE and their phenolic contents during storage, which could have been due to the formation of new compounds with a lower antioxidant capacity. The CPE inhibited oxidation of sunflower oil as shown by lower peroxide values and anisidine values compared to control samples. The CPE was however less effective in reducing peroxide values compared to TBHQ, but was similar to TBHQ in reducing anisidine values. In the presence of ferric ions, the CPE appeared to be less effective in reducing peroxide values compared to TBHQ, but appeared to be more effective than TBHQ in reducing anisidine values. The results showed that the tannin sorghum bran CPE appeared to act as both lipid radical scavengers and metal chelators. The CPE however imparted colour to the sunflower oil, which could limit its application as a natural antioxidant in edible oils. / Dissertation (MSc(Agric) Food Science and Technology)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Food Science / unrestricted

Impacto da diluição isotérmica e bitérmica sobre a qualidade do sêmen suíno / Impact of isothermic and bithermic dilution on quality of chilled boar spermAlmeida, Maria Clara Silva de January 2014 (has links)
The use of bithermic dilution protocols is increasing in artificial insemination centers, being necessary to guarantee that the quality of insemination doses remain the same when compared to isothermic dilution protocols. Four ejaculates from each one of 19 crossbreed PIC® boars were collected and assigned, in a split sample design, in to three treatments: two step bithermic dilution (T1), two step isothermic dilution (T2) and one step isothermic dilution (T3). Temperature curve for the three treatments was recorded using a temperature sensor data logger. Semen doses prepared with BTS extender were stored at 16°C and were used to evaluate sperm parameters through CASA system and sperm morphology, during 120 h. The temperature in semen samples submitted to a two-step bithermic dilution reached 24.1ºC during 120 min, whereas one or two-step isothermic dilution samples reached 26.8ºC and 27.0ºC, respectively. Total motility, progressive motility and BCF were influenced (P<0.05) by the storage time but not by the dilution procedure. Total and progressive motility reduced throughout the storage time (91.0 ± 0.91 to 81.5 ± 1.08 % and 74.0 ± 2.48 to 60.4 ± 2.59% from 24h to 120h, for MOT and PROG respectively) whereas BCF differed between 24 and 120h (28.6 ± 0.76 and 27.3 ± 0.79 Hz). The following motility traits were neither affected by the dilution procedure nor by the time of storage: DAP, DCL, DSL, VAP, VCL, VSL, STR, LIN, WOB, and ALH. At 72 h of storage, sperm morphology was not different among treatments (P>0.05), showing an overall mean of 9.2 ± 0.36 total defects. In conclusion, the bithermic dilution makes the process of artificial insemination doses production faster by taking less time to reach a temperature close to that of storage, without impairing semen quality.

Entretanto, a preservação desse patrimônio arqueológico
The present study aimed to analyze the factors of influence on the processes of tipping and
its consequences in the preservation of heritage material and archaeological in four parks of
the metropolitan area of Recife. The question of the search for a national memory lived on
the decades of 1960 to 1980 here in Brazil has exercised a strong influence on the choices
of which assets constituted examples of the Union’s forming identity. Using the processes
of tipping as guiding, we analyzed the tipping strategies held in Pernambuco, we evaluated
the political discourse, that influenced these ideological processes tipping and, finally, we
analyzed the strategies of tipping and preservation the archaeological heritage of historical
and/or archaeological parks of the country where the archaeological factor was the main
reason for the tumbling process. For this, designed a protocol for analysis of technical, legal
and social dimensions. And, from that we highlighted five key elements that allowed us to
relate the speeches and actions the preservationists that have submitted these assets. Thus,
we obtained that the historical parks in Pernambuco were listed from researchers’ initiative
in order to avoid the consequences of the moment that the Brazil was going through and the
search of a progress that see the cultural heritage as a trammels that hit and that lost some of
the local representative of the history of Pernambuco's Restoration. However, the
preservation of this archaeological heritage requires joint and effective actions with the
participation of the population to which they will endure for the future generations.

Samples were collected during the dry season of 2010, and obtained 10 litter samples in riffles and 10 in pools of each stream with Surber. 5631 organisms and 49 genera of EPT were identified. The values of abundance and assemblage composition differed between streams and mesohabitats, while richness differed only between streams. Smicridae, Phylloicus, Leptophlebiidae sp1, Paragripopteryx and Anacroneuria were the taxa that most contributed to the separation of streams. Twelve taxa were recorded in greater abundance and frequency in riffles and six in pools. The study results suggest that features scale streams (water temperature, for example) and mesohabitat (heterogeneity of litter and water velocity) are determinants of variation in the structure and composition of the EPT assemblages.

Ação do campo magnético pulsado sobre as propriedades do caldo de cana ao longo do armazenamento / Action of pulsed magnetic field on the properties of sugarcane juice during storageRomy Ueki 13 September 2013 (has links)
This study aimed to evaluate the action of pulsed magnetic field in the physicochemical and microbiological properties of sugar cane juice during refrigerated storage. Sugar cane juice samples were exposed to pulsed magnetic field at frequencies of 40 and 60 Hz for 30 and 210 minutes and at frequency of 50 Hz for 120 minutes. Control samples were not exposed to magnetic field. Samples were stored at 4ºC for up to 6 days, and evaluated at times of storage of 6, 12, 24, 48, 96 e 144 hours through physicochemical analysis for all samples and through microbiological analysis for samples treated with 50 and 60 Hz magnetic field. Exposure to 40 Hz magnetic field raised the color parameters L* and a*, and decreased the b* parameter, while de 60 Hz magnetic field had the opposite effect. The treatment with 50 Hz magnetic field raised the color parameter L* and decreased a* and b* parameters. Exposure to 50 and 60 Hz magnetic field reduced the growth of total bacteria, where the frequency of 50 Hz was more effective. The treatment with 60 Hz magnetic field for 30 minutes reduced the antioxidant activity and the total phenolic compound, while the 40 Hz treatment for 30 minutes reduces only the first analysis and at 60 Hz for 210 minutes reduced only the second. The other physicochemical properties did not changed significantly during storage compared with the controls. We concluded that, although more studies is needed for better understand the action mechanism of magnetic field in foods, the low intensity pulsed magnetic field (order of mili tesla) has the potential to be used as innovative technology in food treatment for microbiological control.

Prevention of bibliographical acervos against agents deteriorantes / Prevenção de acervos bibliográficos contra os agentes deteriorantes.Nanci Gonçalves Ribeiro Guimarães 05 March 2007 (has links)
The environment of the museums, files and libraries, as well as the materials of these places as the paper and the leather is favorable and preferential to the biological agents that destroy the registrations of the documents in a short time associated to the chemical and physical agents. Several studies have been showing environmental alterations in an effective way in the control of the infestation and documentary book protection and files that have been attacked by damage agents as insects, fungi and bacterias. The relevance of the subject is the importance to preserve the historical documents that is the identity of a culture and development the science and the technology. To stop the degradation of the historical files without problems caused by the use of poisonous products submitting the material of the archival to a prophylactic environment to the contamination controlling its conditions like the handle, the use and the way to preserve the archives with the least environmental impact besides increasing the permanence of the original documents. This work related to the archives conservation makes a historical approach about the invention and the evolution of the paper as a writing support and it describes some concepts related to the way we can control the environment of the archives to make difficult the degradation of its material besides causing a little impact in these places. Simple solutions are presented for the problems to deteriorations and disasters that they are subject to the archivals constituted in most cases by organic material besides describing the main techniques and the conservation procedures composed of five technical treatments: fumigation, anoxia chamber, hygienic cleaning, and the use of gamma rays and conditioning of works.

Introduction: Decision-making regarding fertility preservation in the context of urgent breast cancer management is complex. The objectives of this study were to define patients' expectations and information needs, develop an online decision support tool, and assess its apparent validity and influence on patients' informed choice.Methodology: Three research methods were used to address the hypotheses: a focus group of five patients for the qualitative study, the development of a decision support tool using the Ottawa method and a randomized, single-centre study. The latter was conducted with patients aged 18 to 40 years referred for fertility preservation in the context of breast cancer, randomized to the IRIS group (standard information) or the DECISIF group (with online decision support tool). The measurement of informed choice was evaluated according to three criteria using a questionnaire: knowledge, attitude, and whether fertility preservation techniques were available. Results: The qualitative study revealed that the information provided to women and the announcement of potential infertility needed to be improved. The online decision support tool was developed based on recommendations from the patients and health professionals involved, who confirmed its apparent validity. For the quantitative study, a total of 125 patients were included and randomized to the IRIS (n=65) or DECISIF (n=60) group. Better knowledge was found in the DECISIF group (8.6/10 (±1.34)) compared to the IRIS group (6.49/10 (±1.89)). In both groups, patients had a positive attitude towards fertility preservation (96%). The final decision was not influenced by membership in one group or another. Thus, at the end of the fertility preservation consultation, 73.6% (92/125), i.e. 69.2% (45/65) of patients in the IRIS group and 78.3% (47/60) of patients in the DECISIF group, chose to keep their oocytes, embryos and/or ovarian tissue.
