Advertising America : the printing, publication, and promotion of English New World books, 1553-1600

This thesis explores how the paratexts to and physical features of English Tudor books about the New World presented the books’ content to their original readers. The contribution this thesis makes to knowledge is threefold. First, the field of study of English travel and colonial literature lacks a bibliographically informed account of how the books’ constitutive elements of type and paper affect meaning. Widespread use of modern editions of the few accessible texts effaces the originals’ rich aesthetic, structural and tactile forms and fails to comprehensively historicise the production and intentions of the books. The careful, contextualised examinations of typefounts and composition included in this thesis go beyond what has been previously done and suggest agendas for further, necessary and illuminating bibliographical work. Second, the thesis presents the first comprehensively investigative survey of how the paratextual elements of the books marketed the New World to Tudor England. It goes beyond John Parker’s fifty-year-old _Books to Build an Empire_ (1965) by considering the full range of forty-three editions’ paratextual apparatus, not just prefaces, proems and dedications. It is simultaneously a counterbalance to the narrow focus on Richard Hakluyt’s anthological _Principal Navigations_ (1598-1600). The thesis begins the much-needed recovery of the conceptual and publication histories of both the constitutive texts reprinted in _Principal Navigations_ and those not included in Hakluyt’s anthology that are nontheless relevant to the history of the genre. Third, this survey that challenges a still powerful teleology: that the publications were unequivocally books to build an empire. Many of these books were in fact marketed as recreational reads. As the paratextual, structural and material features of many of the books this thesis looks at are under-explored and under-reported, close examination of multiple exemplars was necessary to ensure that this thesis is a representative and reliable record of the marketing strategies used to promote Tudor books about America.

Os títulos dos documentos e das obras diversas publicados nesse período foram catalogados ainda no século XIX. Entretanto, boa parte dos exemplares já havia desaparecido, fazendo com que o método utilizado para identificação dos títulos incluísse os anúncios de jornais. Como também eram anunciadas publicações feitas em Lisboa, havia a dúvida quanto à delimitação das que efetivamente foram editadas na Impressão Régia do Rio de Janeiro. A confusão de locais de impressão levantava a hipótese de uma relação editorial entre a Impressão Régia estabelecida na colônia e sua congênere lisboeta. Tal hipótese foi refutada após investigarmos a casa impressora portuguesa e os títulos de romances nela editados. Concluímos que somente seria possível definir quais foram os romances feitos pela primeira casa impressora oficialmente instalada no Brasil com a localização dos exemplares e a confirmação, pelos dados das folhas de rosto, de que foram impressos no Rio de Janeiro. Por meio de buscas, localizamos quase todos os romances catalogados e delimitamos os que saíram dos prelos da Impressão Régia do Rio de Janeiro. No processo, traçamos a história editorial de cada um deles, verificamos de que maneira eram anunciados pelos livreiros nos jornais e analisamos esses livros do ponto de vista material e textual. Raros e de localização trabalhosa, esses romances são atualmente pouco lembrados ou totalmente desconhecidos. No entanto, têm sua importância nos estudos sobre a circulação de livros no período colonial e em anos posteriores e, certamente, fizeram parte da formação do gosto do público por livros do gênero / Abstract: Among many titles published between 1808 and 1822 by Impressão Régia (Royal Printing) from Rio de Janeiro, this thesis concentrates on the novels. In the 19th century the organization of documents and different works published in such period began. However, a significant part of the copies had already disappeared at that time. So, the method used for identifying the titles included newspaper announcements. As publications made in Lisbon were also announced, there was a doubt regarding the delimitation of the ones which had been effectively published by the Impressão Régia from Rio de Janeiro. The confusion about printing places supported the hypothesis about an editorial relation between the Impressão Régia established in the colony and its congener in Lisbon. Such hypothesis was refuted by us after investigating the Portuguese printing house and the titles of novels published by it. We concluded that it would only be possible to define which novels were published by the first printing house officially established in Brazil by means of the localization of the copies and the confirmation, through the data printed on the title page, that they were printed in Rio de Janeiro. We localized almost every novel which were catalogued and delimited those which originated from the press of Impressão Régia from Rio de Janeiro. During the process, we framed the editorial history of each one of them, verify the way they were announced by the booksellers in the newspapers and analyzed these books from the material and textual points view. Being rare and hard to be located, nowadays, these novels are seldom remembered or totally unknown. Don't judge a book by its cover – Using E-books in higher education

Denna uppsats handlar om användningen av E-böcker inom högre utbildning vid Malmö Högskola. Syftet är att undersöka studenters attityder när det gäller användningen av E-böcker jämfört med den tryckta motsvarigheten vid akademiska studier. Studien granskar studenternas preferenser vidanvändningen av E-böcker jämfört med tryckta böcker, samt hur dessa media påverkar studenternas läsvanor. Genom att klargöra i vilka situationer E-böcker eller tryckta böcker har mest fördelar, så kan studenterna göra välgrundade val om vilket medium som de har störst nytta av. En nätbaserad enkät och inspelade intervjuer utgjorde metoderna för insamlingen av data, som sedan jämfördes med tidigare publicerade relevanta studier. Det visade sig att studenterna föredrog tryckta böcker för sina studier, och dessa böcker används fortfarande i första hand vid läsning och analys av längre textavsnitt. Däremot befanns E-böcker vara bäst när man skriver forskningsrapporter. Detta betyder att båda dessa media även framgent har en given plats inom denhögre utbildningen. / This thesis is about the use of E-books in higher education, specifically at Malmö University. The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes students have towards the use of E-books for scholarly purposes in higher education versus their printed counterparts. This study looks at student preferences in the use of E-books compared to printed books, along with the effects these media have on students reading habits. By discovering in which situations E-books or printed books are most beneficial, students can make informed decisions about which medium will benefit them the most. An online survey and recorded interviews were used as methods for collecting data, whichwas then compared to previously published studies related to this subject. Students were found to prefer the printed book for studying purposes, and it still remains as the main source for reading and analyzing longer passages of text. E-books, on the other hand, were found to be most advantageous when preparing research reports. This means that both media still have their place inhigher education, which is likely to continue in the foreseeable future.

New Approaches to OCR for Early Printed Books

Books printed before 1800 present major problems for OCR. One of the mainobstacles is the lack of diversity of historical fonts in training data. The OCR-D project, consisting of book historians and computer scientists, aims to address this deficiency by focussing on three major issues. Our first target wasto create a tool that identifies font groups automatically in images of histori-cal documents. We concentrated on Gothic font groups that were commonlyused in German texts printed in the 15thand 16th century: the well-known Fraktur and the lesser known Bastarda, Rotunda, Textura und Schwabacher. The tool was trained with 35,000 images and reaches an accuracy level of 98%. It can not only differentiate between the above-mentioned font groupsbut also Hebrew, Greek, Antiqua and Italic. It can also identify woodcut im-ages and irrelevant data (book covers, empty pages, etc.). In a second step,we created an online training infrastructure (okralact), which allows for theuse of various open source OCR engines such as Tesseract, OCRopus, Krakenand Calamari. At the same time, it facilitates training for specific models offont groups. The high accuracy of the recognition tool paves the way for theunprecedented opportunity to differentiate between the fonts used by individual printers. With more training data and further adjustments, the toolcould help to fill a major gap in historical research

The aim of the thesis 'Printed Books vs. eBooks: What, Why and How Does Generation Y Read?' is to uncover what motivates a group of young people, specifically twenty students attending universities based in Prague, to choose either printed or electronic books. Furthermore, while using the qualitative method of semi-structured interview it was also the aim of this thesis not only to describe and analyse how important are the social aspects of books as well as the ways of acquiring them, but similarly to get a better understanding of how Generation Y perceives books. For this reason the conducted research could be beneficial to an academic area of interest, while correspondingly valuable for publishers, bookshops or e-reader manufacturers and their marketing strategies. Practical research is built upon a relevant theoretical basis: history of reading, characterization of printed and electronic books, together with a Czech book market summary and an introduction of Generation Y. In addition, the fourth chapter presents methods used when conducting the research, particularly Grounded Theory. However, the results of this research and their interpretations are presented in the final chapter along with respondents' descriptions, research goals and the course of interviews. The circulation and collection of Italian printed books in sixteenth-century France

This thesis is an examination of the circulation networks and the patterns of collection of Italian printed books in France in the sixteenth century. Although the cultural relations between the Italian and French territory have been studied, a systematic survey to assess the impact of books on the shaping of the French Renaissance has never been attempted. The first section of this study examines the trade routes and networks which facilitated the circulation of Italian printed books across the French territory. Because of the nature of the French early modern book trade, focused primarily on two major centres (Paris and Lyon), a geographical division has been adopted in investigating this phenomenon. Chapter one explores the trade networks existing in sixteenth-century Lyon, from the powerful Compagnie des Libraires to the activity of the libraires italianisants in the second half of the century. Chapter two examines the importance of Italian editions in Paris. Chapter three is devoted to the circulation of Italian books in the provinces and the impact of large regional centres and trade routes on the availability of books locally. Chapter four investigates private networks and their importance in making specific texts available to French readers. The second section of this study investigates the status and importance of Italian printed books within French Renaissance libraries. Chapter five looks into the development of the French Royal library and the role played by Italian items in defining its identity as an institution. Chapter six examines the presence of Italian books in French aristocratic and courtly collections. Chapter seven is devoted to the libraries of the French literary milieu, analysing the extent to which Italian books were cherished as literary exemplars, particularly with regard to vernacular texts. Chapter eight examines the presence of Italian books in professional collections, with particular attention here given to texts in Latin and other scholarly languages imported from Italy. The conclusion draws all of these strands together, looking at the specific role played by Italian culture, through the printed book, on the development of the French Renaissance. A catalogue of about 2,400 Italian printed books with early modern French provenance is included as an appendix volume. This data provides the evidential basis for this study.
