Esta tese analisa quatro livros publicados entre 2000 e 2001, quando foi lançado um grande número de livros escritos por homens encarcerados: Diário de um detento, de Jocenir, Sobrevivente André du Rap (do Massacre do Carandiru), de André du Rap e Bruno Zeni, Memórias de um sobrevivente, de Luiz Alberto Mendes, e Vidas do Carandiru, de Humberto Rodrigues. Sustento que a disposição material desses livros e o modo como a matéria narrativa é enformada sejam indícios de que as narrativas do cárcere brasileiro tragam as marcas dos modos de sociabilidade daquele ambiente, em que se reconhece a condição de preso, mas se almeja o estatuto de escritor. / This work analyses four books published between 2000 and 2001, when there was a boom of prisoners narratives: Diário de um detento, by Jocenir, Sobrevivente André du Rap (do Massacre do Carandiru), by André du Rap and Bruno Zeni, Memórias de um sobrevivente, by Luiz Alberto Mendes, and Vidas do Carandiru, by Humberto Rodrigues. I argue that the material disposition of these books and the way the narrative substance is constructed are signs that the narratives from Brazilian prisons carry marks of the sociability of that environment, in which one acknowledges the condition of prisoner, but also aims at a writer status.

In the prison society of Circadia, the Jury doesn’t need chains or locks to keep citizens tame, only routine—but Valerie and Brennan break the routine. Valerie allows a hospital patient who hurt her in the past to die from cardiac arrest. Her twelve-year term will be reset if anyone finds out she didn’t try to save him; she’ll start over in the dangerous Twelfth Circle. With 455 days left in Circadia, she must lie not only to the authorities but also to her family. And she’s a terrible liar. Most conversations halt near Brennan, the Warden’s son, but even he catches the whispers after a police officer attempts to escape from Circadia. When Brennan learns that his mother and a Juror are rigging the officer’s public trial, they give him a choice: side with the Circadians and lose his safety, or side with the Jury and lose his self-respect. Structured in chapters that alternate between Valerie and Brennan, this novel—influenced by George Orwell, Suzanne Collins, and Michel Foucault—suggests that the best prison makes you comfortable. It makes you want to stay.

A análise destas duas obras está baseada na relação do relato carcerário com a categoria testemunho e com a busca pela legitimação de seu discurso. Por sua posição deslegitimada frente a uma cultura letrada, esse sujeito se apropria de elementos e recursos pertencentes a esta cultura, não somente para contar a sua história, mas para testemunhar com um relato contundente a violência da prisão tomando a posição de um observador. / This dissertation analyzes two narratives of prison experience, published in 2001: Diário de um detento: o livro of Jocenir and Memórias de um sobrevivente, Luiz Alberto Mendes. The analysis of these two works is based on how this subject incarcerated searches the legitimacy of his speech, since this is delegitimized both the experience itself, that is, the content of the story, as reported by the speech that, due to the fact that the author does not belong to legitimate means of literate culture. Thus, this prisoner appropriates resources of literacy to not only tell your story, but with a hard-hitting reporting portray the reality of the prison, taking the position of an observer from prison.
