Arquitetura moderna paulista, imaginário social urbano, uso e apropriação do espaço /

Hirao, Hélio. January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: Observing the city with the focus in its buildings in order to understand the urban process is the path that this research proposes. In this sense, the polemic insertion of the São Paulo modern architecture in the historical centers of middle-size cities is analyzed by integrating the perspectives of Vilanova Artigas and Henry Lefèbvre. Thus, the absence is the city as a social phenomenon, the materialization is the design and the overcoming is the project. Therefore, from the perception to the cognition of the urban space, passing by the relations between lot and street, public and private, centrality and the place, conservative and modern, clientelism and relations of power, I discuss the discourse and the practice of such architecture. Has such design been accomplished? Is the building out of place? Supported by the language of design and its representations, in the process of the praxis of urbanism intermediated by the urbanist's social role, I make a reflection about the conceived, the lived and the appropriated city, and the possible arrangement of the city of memory, of imagination and the one to be denounced. The shape of the city has a non-used content to be revealed. Therefore, the city is the place of possibilities. Thus, the city of imagination allows us a perspective of accomplishing Artigas' design. / Doutor

A European Case Study on the Intersection Between Public and Private Space: Increasing Breastfeeding Rates in a Modern World

Stearmer, Steven Matthew 16 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Health organizations around the world, from international bodies of government to local advocacy groups, are pushing the benefits of breastfeeding. While this is commendable, no study has ever been completed to assess on a regional scale the available policy options and their effectiveness at producing increased breastfeeding rates. It is my contention that five key factors influence the effectiveness of breastfeeding policies in Europe; Acceptance of public breastfeeding, maternity resource commitment, legal protection of breastfeeding in public and business space, a united voice in favor of breastfeeding, and limitations to formula advertisements in hospitals on media outlets. These five factors influence how successfully mothers navigate public and private space as they choose to breastfeed their children. In my effort to assess the contextual factors and policies that create an environment conducive to long term breastfeeding rates I am also interested in discovering a set of factors that do not increase the economic vulnerability of women. The emperical analysis derived from data from the WomanStats Database found that a combination of five conditions; social acceptance of public breastfeeding, maternal resource commitment, legal protection of breastfeeding, united voice in favor of breastfeeding, and laws regulating the sale of formula were all necessary in order to produce higher breastfeeding rates in Europe. The data also shows that when countries pursue these five factors female income disparity is not negatively impacted.

Exploring the Book Through Layers of Public Space

Snook, Daniel Edwin 11 June 2012 (has links)
In today's society, awash with digital media, the physical book should still be treated as a valuable object. It is a symbol of knowledge and, in the same way that the stones of historic buildings tell the story of their times, the physical book carries the truths of the past to each new generation, not only by the words it contains, but in how it is bound and set and worn. The library rises around the book, offering shelves that may be explored, allowing people to discover as they browse. The neighborhood library serves as an anchor for the community; without physical books, the library is gutted of its essential purpose, becoming merely a community gathering place. Members of the community must be given space to move through the books as they progress from the public realm of the street into the semi-public space of a library reading room, and perhaps beyond to their private places of study. Each stage of their journey should be a clearly defined 'place' with its own purpose and potential. At the same time, the spatial boundaries in this progression must be integrated in order to invite people to move from one to another, to discover the books and the knowledge contained within. My thesis project has explored and developed these theoretical ideas into a library and housing project for Washington, DC's West End neighborhood. / Master of Architecture

Moters tapatybės problema XIX a. pabaigos-XX a. pradžios moterų kūryboje / Female Identity Problem in Lithuanina Women’s Creative Writings in the Late 19th – Early 20th Century

Bleizgienė, Ramunė 17 September 2009 (has links)
Disertacijoje pristatoma nemažai XIX a. pabaigos–XX a. pradžios moterų publicistikos ir grožinės kūrybos tekstų, kurie iki šiol nebuvo patekę į tyrinėjimų akiratį. / Ramunė Bleizgienė‘s dissertaiton Female Identity Problem in Lithuanian Women’s Creative Writing in the Late 19th – Early 20th Century analyses identity as a result of an interaction between a person and his/her socio-cultural context, by raising a question how the development of modern Lithuanian society influenced the forms of female identity. A heterogeneous methodological perspective introduces a shift in female identity as an inseparable part of the process of women becoming public individuals. The exploration of creative texts by Žemaitė, Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė, Šatrijos Ragana, Ona Pleirytės-Puidienė Vaidilutė and Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė reveals how the writing women bring up and establish themselves as a speaking public subject. A thorough analysis of women’s writing, their diaries, letters, and memoirs reveals the ways in which the writing women experience their sociability, and emphasizes the impact that socio-cultural definitions of an individual/woman made on women’s self-perception. Structural changes in female identity undergo analysis in a condensed socio-cultural context with a review and a presentation of many texts by female authors that were circulating in public space, which gives a view of the multiple nature and complexity of the process. The study presents a lot of journalistic and fiction texts that were written in the late 19th – early 20th century, but were not in the scope of analysis up to the present moment.

Weak Governance, Divided Residents: The Development of Gated Communities in Guatemala City

Dalby, Laura 28 October 2013 (has links)
This thesis asks the question: how can one describe the development of gated communities in Guatemala City? It collects and analyzes data on gated communities in Guatemala City in order to explore the nature of their development in a violent geographical region, which has also been neglected by the academic community. It argues that the development of gated communities in Guatemala City does not fit the mutually exclusive ‘security’ argument as scholars have made. Instead, a mixture of economic factors, social status, weak governance, and security concerns are involved as large private corporations draw upon security-related fears, unregulated development of real estate and weak governance, resulting in a disorganized model of spatial organization. This study adds to the growing body of literature on gated communities by laying the groundwork needed to fill the gap that currently exists in Central America.

Réguler les sonorités de l’espace public nocturne : le cas d’un quartier parisien en gentrification, Oberkampf / Noise control in public space at night : a case study of Oberkampf, a gentrifying Parisian neighbourhood

Defrance, Camille Adrien 31 January 2017 (has links)
This study deals with the different modes of noise control in a bustling neighbourhood of historical Paris city centre, busy by day and night, and with its resident’s perception of noise. Our definition of noise is restricted to human and non mechanical sound sources. Our analysis is concerned both with public and private space related arrangements. This thesis research started as a campaign against nighttime noise pollution was brought onto Paris political agenda. Our work comes up within a debate on city centre planning, between urban attractivity and residential comfort issues, which could be generalised to any lively nightlife areas attracting young crowds in globalised cities. We offer to examine the anti-noise pollution policy at the city level, and more specifically at the level of a few bustling streets, and to analyse the way the residents of these streets react to their sound environment. With regards to the complexity of the sound phenomenon and because of the specificity of the fieldwork, we have opted for a cross-circular approach at the intersection between urbanism, public action sociology, gentrification studies, social history, anthropology and psychoacoutics. Our methodology also relied on a number of tools such as a set of interviews with different local agents (residents, shopkeepers, elected representatives, etc.), archival research and micro-sociological observations.
