An investigation of how design managers in organisations in Bahrain manage and evaluate visual communication design for strategic advantage

The role of visual communication design continues to increase in importance around the world. In Bahrain, organisations are increasingly considering visual communication design as a means of accomplishing organisational goals. The research aims to understand the process by which design managers in organisations in Bahrain manage and evaluate visual communication designs to gain strategic advantage. Even though the management of visual communication design has not yet been recognised as a separate category of design management in Bahrain, its processes and approaches may differ from other management applications. This research opens with a contextual overview of the visual communication design management field, before presenting an understanding of how visual communication design can be utilised as an innovative approach to the strategic structuring organisational thinking. Methods have been developed for investigating how Bahraini client design managers manage visual communication design projects. Observational studies and interviews with client design managers and creative directors have been conducted to obtain an understanding of the visual communication design process, together with evaluation procedures in the Bahraini context. These empirical investigations have led to the development of a conceptual framework that describes the visual communication design management process and the evaluation procedure that is carried out by client design managers in Bahrain. The remainder of this thesis explains the outcomes of each phase of the research. The unique contributions of this study are embodied in a discussion of the findings together with reflections and recommendations for those involved and interested in design management in Bahrain.

A study of vector formulations for distillation processes

In the last decade Process Synthesis has been an emerging active area of research. Since 1999 at COMPS, we have continuously applied this technique to many studies and recently have carefully started to consider the integration of this technique with others to simplify multilevel process design. In this regard the need for new tools that do not require very accurate data or experimental technique has become an imperative for the initial analysis of systems. This thesis presents some of these results.Process synthesis requires new rapid tools for the assessment and comparison of new technologies (possibilities) in the process development stage.This thesis examines and formulates process synthesis problems in the case of separation processes (separation with mixing , separation with reaction).Using simple generic vectorial tools, the thesis addresses the folowing issue: How the topology and mapping of the process vector field defines patterns that may be used for alternative process synthesis solution and design (structure selection ,stability analysis or controllability etc...) . The tools presented are intended for preliminary process design and feasibility studies and will allow for simple comparisons of various options.The key principle used in the study is the exploitation of the generic vectorial representation of fundamental physical phenomena (separation, mixing , reaction) in the process models as used for process synthesis and analysis.The demonstrated power of this approach is that it allows one to exploit the formal mathematical similarities between the different processing modes. Extensive topological Reactive Column Profile has been generated and analysed, offering new insights for manipulation of process behaviour in process synthesis and design. The significance of the contribution of this research is in offering extended fundamental insigths in creating process synthesis options for reactive-separations systems, creating the essential structural basis for subsequent mathematical optimisation of the performanceof process designs.

An investigation into the application of design processes to novel self-use molecular diagnostic devices for sexually transmitted infections

The purpose of this research was to investigate the application of design processes to the development of novel self-use molecular diagnostic devices for sexually transmitted infections. The argument proposed in this thesis is that the application of design methods at the earliest research stages into miniaturised, low cost, molecular diagnostic technologies will accelerate and improve the process of translating proof of concept diagnostic technologies into usable devices. Concept development requirements and potential issues and barriers to development were identified through interviews with expert stakeholders. These requirements were further refined through a survey of a multidisciplinary diagnostic medical device research group. An action research method was applied to develop a proof of concept prototype to the preclinical trial stage. Through these research studies, a design process model was formulated for use in a research environment. The application of design methods to the proof of concept prototype described in the thesis have resulted in a preclinical trial prototype that exhibits the necessary features for development into a self-use molecular diagnostic device. Issues and barriers were identified and discussed, design guidelines for further development beyond preclinical trial were defined and a generalised design process model for self-use molecular diagnostic devices for sexually transmitted infections was proposed. This research highlights the need for design methods to be applied at the earliest possible stages of the development of novel molecular diagnostic devices.

Para a realização deste estudo, partiu-se de uma revisão bibliográfica e foram realizadas entrevistas com especialistas na área de design, bem como com os gestores das empresas estudadas, a fim de compreender a realidade de cada uma. Os resultados desta dissertação indicaram que todos os escritórios estudados empregam algumas ferramentas do design estratégico, e eles utilizam distintos processos criativos na execução de seus projetos. / The innovation a strategic role within the organizations. Similarly, the design part of this context as an important tool for business strategies. From this perspective, more and more studies emerge linking the innovation process with the design, understood as a tool capable of generating differentiation in various market sectors. Thus, this research recognizes the importance of developing a study that addresses the key processes in the office design service providers. The objective of this dissertation is to understand the methods and creative processes of three design offices in Rio Grande do Sul, by means of a descriptive analysis, to understand what makes them stand out in the context of innovation. For this study, we started with a literature review and interviews with experts in the field of design, as well as managers of the companies studied, in order to understand the reality of each one. Through this study, the results of this work indicated that all the offices studied employ some tools of strategic design and they use different creative processes in the implementation of their projects.

Cette recherche vise à proposer une approche intégrée permettant la prise en compte simultanée des paramètres Produits / process dans le cadre d’une fabrication par ajout de matière. Le développement produit est en profonde mutation, prenant en compte les contraintes de personnalisation, de temps de mise sur le marché de plus en plus court, la volonté d’une approche eco-responsable etc. Ce changement de paradigme conduit à s’intéresser au choix du couple matériau /process dès la phase de conception afin de prendre en compte les contraintes liées au procédé identifié. Cette approche multi critère s’intéresse à la fois au couple matériau procédé mais prend en compte les aspect fonctionnels de la pièce. Ainsi ce travail de thèse présente une méthodologie de décision générique, basée sur des outils de prise de décision multicritères, qui peut non seulement proposer une solution satisfaisant les contraintes liées aux matériaux, processus et processus par addition de matière, mais propose également de servir de guide aux concepteurs permettant un choix raisonné basé sur des combinaisons matériau-machine orientées conception et obtenu à partir d’une base de données de 38 fournisseurs internationaux de machine de fabrication par ajout de matière. / The doctoral research focuses to build an integrated approach that can simultaneously handle the product and process parameters related to additive manufacturing (AM). Since, market dynamics of today are constantly evolving, drivers such as mass customization strategies, shorter product development cycles, a large pool of materials to choose from, abundant manufacturing processes, etc., have made it essential to choose the right compromise of materials, manufacturing processes and associated machines in early stages of design considering the Design for AM guidelines. As several criteria, material attributes and process functionality requirements are involved for decision making in the industries, the thesis introduces a generic decision methodology, based on multi-criteria decision-making tools, that can not only provide a set of compromised AM materials, processes and machines but will also act as a guideline for designers to achieve a strong foothold in the AM industry by providing practical solutions containing design oriented and feasible material-machine combinations from a database of 38 renowned AM vendors in the world today.

Biomimicry For Sustainability: An Educational Project In Sustainable Product Design

The notion of sustainability has become an extensive area of research ever since the term emerged in the late 1980s, due to the negative effects of unsustainable production and consumption patterns on environmental stewardship, social equity and economic development. There have been various approaches developed for product design and education within the context sustainability. Biomimicry is one of those approaches, and its implications for product design education have recently started to be explored. In this study, an educational tool - Biomimicry Sketch Analysis (BSA) - was developed and integrated into the idea-generation phase of an educational design project at the undergraduate level in the Department of Industrial Design at the Middle East Technical University (METU). This integration is analyzed throughout the graduate thesis study, to understand and explore the implications of the biomimicry approach for sustainability in product design education. The educational tool within this approach was found as influential among the third year industrial design students for the idea-generation phase, yet the results of this study included both pros and cons for the incorporation of the BSA exercise.

Digital assembly process design for aircraft systems

The research described in this thesis concentrates on the development of an integrated assembly process design for aircraft systems. Assembly process design is one of the most important and complicated activities in aircraft manufacturing. Many solutions are suggested in previous research to develop process design method. But gaps are found in assembly process design of aircraft system in following studies. In this research, an integration approach which combined with product development philosophy, design for assembly method and digital assembly technology is proposed to solve the issues in the whole product development lifecycle. Three case studies from different design phase are used to examine the integrated process design method. The research results demonstrate that the proposed digital process design method can be used to develop manufacturing strategies of system assembly in early design phase, and improve the accuracy and operability of assembly instructions according to 3-D assembly process plans in detailed design phase. The product design also benefits from this method in terms of correcting design errors in the concurrent engineering process. A proposed process planning system framework based on lightweight CAD is developed in this research. The customized assembly representation of 3DVIA system illustrates the advantages of lightweight CAD when applying in shop floor.

Zero Tolerance Program : A strategic approach to reduce operational cost and improve quality levels

For a company to be competitive today, one way is to create a natural feedback loop from the production department to the design department with information regarding the production systems ability to deliver a finished component. The purpose with this feedback loop is to create respect for tolerances and to more design for manufacturing and assembly. The studied company in this thesis work developed a quality program to reach a spiral of continuous improvements to reduce cost of poor quality (CoPQ) and to reach an improved quality level (PPM). The object of this work was to test and improve the quality program called The Zero Tolerance Program. Delimitations were made when the work was started and ongoing which led to that the impact on PPM could not be studied. The connection to CoPQ was difficult to obtain and could only be proved theoretically, not practically, due to the short timetable. During the short amount of time the right root cause could not be found. The thesis work findings came to a number of identified Measurable Success Criteria and requirements which must be in place for the further progress of The Zero Tolerance Program. / PREPARE

A Process Integration Approach to the Strategic Design and Scheduling of Biorefineries

This work focused upon design and operation of biodiesel production facilities in support of the broader goal of developing a strategic approach to the development of biorefineries. Biodiesel production provided an appropriate starting point for these efforts. The work was segregated into two stages. Various feedstocks may be utilized to produce biodiesel, to include virgin vegetable oils and waste cooking oil. With changing prices, supply, and demand of feedstocks, a need exists to consider various feedstock options. The objective of the first stage was to develop a systematic procedure for scheduling and operation of flexible biodiesel plants accommodating a variety of feedstocks. This work employed a holistic approach and combination of process simulation, synthesis, and integration techniques to provide: process simulation of a biodiesel plant for various feedstocks, integration of energy and mass resources, optimization of process design and scheduling, and techno-economic assessment and sensitivity analysis of proposed schemes. An optimization formulation was developed to determine scheduling and operation for various feedstocks and a case study solved to illustrate the merits of the devised procedure. With increasing attention to the environmental impact of discharging greenhouse gases (GHGs), there has been growing public pressure to reduce the carbon footprint associated with fossil fuel use. In this context, one key strategy is substitution of fossil fuels with biofuels such as biodiesel. Design of biodiesel plants has traditionally been conducted based on technical and economic criteria. GHG policies have the potential to significantly alter design of these facilities, selection of feedstocks, and scheduling of multiple feedstocks. The objective of the second stage was to develop a systematic approach to design and scheduling of biodiesel production processes while accounting for the effect of GHG policies. An optimization formulation was developed to maximize profit of the process subject to flowsheet synthesis and performance modeling equations. The carbon footprint is accounted for through a life cycle analysis (LCA). The objective function includes a term reflecting the impact of the LCA of a feedstock and its processing to biodiesel. A multiperiod approach was used and a case study solved with several scenarios of feedstocks and GHG policies.

Integrating Safety Issues in Optimizing Solvent Selection and Process Design

Incorporating consideration for safety issues while designing solvent processes has become crucial in light of the chemical process incidents involving solvents that have taken place in recent years. The implementation of inherently safer design concepts is considered beneficial to avoid hazards during early stages of design. The application of existing process design and modeling techniques that aid the concepts of ‘substitution’, ‘intensification’ and ‘attenuation’ has been shown in this work. For ‘substitution’, computer aided molecular design (CAMD) technique has been applied to select inherently safer solvents for a solvent operation. For ‘intensification’ and ‘attenuation’, consequence models and regulatory guidance from EPA RMP have been integrated into process simulation. Combining existing techniques provides a design team with a higher level of information to make decisions based on process safety. CAMD is a methodology used for designing compounds with desired target properties. An important aspect of this methodology concerns the prediction of properties given the structure of the molecule. This work also investigates the applicability of Quantitative Structure Property Relationship (QSPR) and topological indices to CAMD. The evaluation was based on models developed to predict flash point properties of different classes of solvents. Multiple linear regression and neural network analysis were used to develop QSPR models, but there are certain limitations associated with using QSPR in CAMD which have been discussed and need further work. Practical application of molecular design and process design techniques have been demonstrated in a case study on liquid-liquid extraction of acetic acid-water mixture. Suitable inherently safer solvents were identified using ICAS-ProCAMD, and consequence models were integrated into Aspen Plus simulator using a calculator sheet. Upon integrating flammable and toxic hazard modeling, solvents such as 5-nonanone, 2-nonanone and 5-methyl-2-hexanone provide inherently safer options, while conventionally-used solvent, ethyl acetate, provides higher degree of separation capability. A conclusive decision regarding feasible solvents and operating conditions would depend on design requirements, regulatory guidance, and safety criteria specified for the process. Inherent safety has always been an important consideration to be implemented during early design steps, and this research presents a methodology to incorporate the principles and obtain inherently safer alternatives.
