As the practice of social justice in traditional schools becomes embedded in the discourse of educational settings (Theoharis, 2007), school leaders are increasingly being required to practice social justice leadership by identifying and initiating practices that engage students from diverse and under-served backgrounds. The purpose of this study was to identify the leadership practices of six former and current principals who have led National ESEA Distinguished Schools (formerly National Title I Distinguished Schools) in the United States. These principals work with diverse student populations that typically struggle to make academic gains and meet state standards. As such, this study sought to delve into the leadership practices of Title I principals. By understanding the leadership practices in which these principals engaged, and how consistent these practices are with the principles of social justice, a model of social justice leadership can be postulated for consideration. A qualitative research methodology, in-depth phenomenological interviews (Seidman, 2013) was used. Open-ended questions were posed during the semi-structured interviews of the principals. The findings in this study provide details on what actions six Title I principals from districts across the United States took to lead their schools to National ESEA Distinguished School status. These social justice leaders address the social structures of oppression, privilege, and opportunity that can deprive marginalized student groups from access to educational opportunity. Principals reported that the actions they took to ensure equity and fairness were around creating safe and orderly learning environments, professional learning communities, and professional development for staff. / Doctor of Education / This study will provide insight into the leadership practices of Title I principals and how they successfully led Title I schools and gained national recognition. The National Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Distinguished Schools (formerly National Title I Distinguished Schools) Programs recognizes schools for their growth in student academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to identify the leadership practices of these principals and to understand how consistent these practices are with the principles of social justice leadership. The target population of the study was principals from six Title I schools who obtained National Distinguished ESEA School status. These principals work with diverse student populations that typically struggle to make academic gains and meet state standards. Each principal participated in a 60-minute, semi-structured interview. The purpose of the interview was to uncover and encapsulate a person's experience (Seidman, 2013). The analysis of the experiences of these leaders provided a lens that other school leaders might consider to improve their leadership practice. The data analysis indicated that these social justice leaders address the social structures of oppression, privilege, and opportunity that can deprive marginalized student groups of access to educational opportunity. Principals reported that the actions they took to ensure equity and fairness were around creating safe and orderly learning environments, professional learning communities, and professional development for staff. Findings from the study indicated more research is needed on the practices of social justice leadership.

Supportive Systems for Building Capacity of the Elementary Instructional Coach

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the systems in place to build the capacity of elementary instructional coaches in a fast-growth district. Through syntheses of research from educational scholars, the conceptual framework was developed with a focus on building capacity of instructional coaches in an ever-changing environment of fast-growth through the lens of professional learning communities, human and social capital, and support from district and campus administration. This study assessed the perceptions of six instructional coaches, six principals, and six district leaders from Rose ISD regarding the school district's support for building the capacity of instructional coaches within the elementary instructional coaching program. The three-part data collection process included document analysis, in-depth interviews, and focus group interviews to support triangulation of data. Through the a priori coding process, the following four themes emerged that highlight key components needed to support district leaders in establishing systems to build the capacity of instructional coaches in an ever-changing environment caused by fast growth: structured time for professional learning, program clarity, collaborative support systems, and implementation of a professional learning community framework. This study revealed a specific need to further understand systems for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the instructional coaching program in an ever-changing environment of a fast-growth district.

The relationship of instructional supervision and professional learning communities as catalysts for authentic professional growth : a study of one school division

There has been a shift in education as the focus has moved from the centrality of teaching to the importance of learning (Aseltine, Judith, & Rigazio-DiGilio, 2006). The enhancement of educational experiences and learning of students is a goal shared by instructional supervision (Nolan & Hoover, 2004) and professional learning communities (DuFour & DuFour, 2003). As the need for professional development activities, such as instructional supervision and professional learning communities, to support professional growth continues, how these activities are implemented within a school division remains a critical concern.<p> The purpose of the study was to investigate the links between professional learning communities and instructional supervisory practice as catalysts for authentic professional growth. The result of this study suggests that a zone of authentic professional growth occurs when the activities of professional learning communities and instructional supervision as activities of professional development and reflective practice are aligned. In an era of greater accountability in education school divisions have attempted to support their professional staff with limited resources. Connecting activities to support the goals of the school division, such as professional growth and student learning, is one means of maximizing the use of the resources. There has been considerable research into instructional supervision and professional learning communities however little has been done regarding the connection and implications of these professional activities on each other.<p> The research questions of the study focused on gathering the level of agreement of teachers and in-school administrators regarding qualities of effective instructional supervision and successful professional learning communities. An additional research question focused on what were the criteria of successful professional learning communities that related to effective instructional supervisory practice.<p> The study used mixed research methodology to collect information about one school division. A survey was utilized to collect the perceptions of teachers and in-school administrators regarding successful professional learning communities and effective instructional supervision. The data collected from the survey was analyzed by two interpretation panels, one consisting of teachers and the other consisting of in-school administrators. From the analysis provided by the panels and the survey data collected, it was found that from the perceptions of teachers and in-school administrators in one school system, professional learning communities can contain specific qualities that support effective instructional supervision. The combination of these two professional activities can become a catalyst for authentic professional growth for teachers and in-school administrators.<p> The findings of the study highlights the eight preconditions necessary for an environment or zone of authentic professional growth through the use of professional learning communities to support instructional supervision. Implications, based on key findings, of the study include the need to manage time effectively, and to provide sufficient resources to support instructional supervision through professional learning communities. Perspectives through play : playbuilding as participatory action research in arts-based professional development

This thesis document presents a case study of a professional development playbuilding process at a public elementary school located in Austin, Texas. The study argues that playbuilding is a form of participatory action arts-based research particularly when positioned within the professional development setting. This qualitative study uses a narrative thematic analysis of the playbuilding process and workshop performance to examine how reflective and reflexive practice is situated within playbuilding as professional development. The document concludes with a discussion of the limitations and transformative potential of playbuilding and argues for the creation of critical pedagogical professional learning communities for teachers in school settings. / text

An Analysis of the Emotional Intelligence and Personality of Principals Leading Professional Learning Communities

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between a principal's emotional intelligence and personality and his or her ability to implement and develop professional learning communities within the school. The Professional Learning Community Assessment (PLCA) was administered to principals and teachers in 13 schools in Texas ranging from elementary to high school. Based on the strength of the PLCA scores, two elementary schools were selected to participate in case study research. The principals of these two campuses were administered an emotional intelligence instrument (MSCEIT), a personality instrument (DiSC), and were interviewed along with three of their teachers. The findings indicate that both of these principals scored high in the Influential and Conscientiousness subscales and low in the Dominance subscale. The principals also possessed either near-average or above-average emotional intelligence with both principals scoring particularly strong in the Strategic subscale.

Databaserade beslut i skolan : En kritisk diskursanalys av rektorers välgrundade beslutsprocess / Data-based Decisions in School : A Discourse analysis of Principals written Data-based Decision process

In this study, the aim is to review principals' data-based decision-making process, which is based on analysing the discourses that are expressed in the documentation of their decision-making process. There are 84 decisions reviewed which come from 12 different principals in 13 different schools (pre-school class and year 1 - 9 compulsory school).  The theoretical startingpoint for the study is organisational theory and a model for Critical discourse analysis (CDA), which consists of three interrelated processes of analysis. Four different decision discourses are identified, efficiency discourse, knowledge discourse, documentation discourse and problem-based discourse. Previous research in the same field are confirmed. However, it contradicts with the idea that data-based decision-making process is following certain steps and fixed order in this kind of decision process in school. The conclusions are that despite guidelines and a strong focus on assessing results, the decision-making process seems to take other directions than planned in policies. Some parts in the process seems to be particularly complicated, and schools would gain from clarifying a designed data-based decision process. / I den här studien är syftet att granska rektorers välgrundade eller databaserade beslutsprocess, vilket sker genom att analysera de diskurser som kommer till uttryck i rektorers dokumentation om analys av resultat och planerade åtgärder. Utifrån en flerdimensionell analysmodell granskas 84 planerade åtgärder, från 12 olika rektorer i 13 olika grundskolor. Den teoretiska och metodologiska utgångspunkten finns i kritisk diskursanalys och organisationsteori. Resultatet stämmer till viss del överens med och bekräftar tidigare forskningsresultat inom samma område, men det motsäger att den välgrundade beslutsprocessen går till i bestämda steg och i en viss ordning. I studien identifieras fyra beslutsdiskurser: effektivitetsdiskurs, kunskapsdiskurs, dokumentationsdiskurs och problembaserad diskurs. Slutsatserna är, att trots riktlinjer och ett starkt fokus på att bedöma resultat verkar beslutsprocessen ta andra vägar än det som planeras i direktiv och policys. Vissa delar är särskilt komplicerade och av den anledningen kan alla organisationsnivåer vinna på att ge en mer tydlig form till processen för de databaserade besluten.

Teachers Teaching Teachers: A Sustainable and Inexpensive Professional Development Program to Improve Instruction

School districts face tremendous budget challenges and, as a result, professional development has been "trimmed" from many school budgets. (Habegger & Hodanbosi, 2011). School administrators responsible for planning professional development face a daunting task and often focus on PowerPoints, district mandated training, one-shot presentations, and workshops that are delivered by expensive experts. These types of activities lack teacher collaboration, time for sharing of ideas and opportunity for reflection and analysis (Torff & Byrnes, 2011, Coggins, Zuckerman & Mckelvey, 2010). The problem addressed in this study is that teacher professional development is usually planned by school administrators who are provided little support or training. This study used the problem-based learning approach designed by Bridges and Hallinger (1995) to determine the usefulness of a handbook for principals to utilize as they plan professional development. The handbook was developed, field tested and revised using Borg and Gall's (2003) research and development cycle. This qualitative study included surveys, observations, interviews and workshops to determine the usefulness of the handbook. The study consisted of preliminary field testing and product revision followed by the main field testing. The main field test was a workshop for K-12 school and district level administrators on how to use the handbook in planning meaningful, ongoing teacher professional development. The data collected in this study determined that the handbook,Teachers Teaching Teachers: Designing Successful Teacher Professional Development on a Shoestring Budget, is a useful tool for school administrators responsible for planning teacher professional development.
