[en] LOOKING AT THE IDEAL, STEPPING ON REALITY, ACCOMPLISHING POSSIBILITIES: WORK AND LIFE OF TEACHERS COMMITED WITH TEACHING FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS / [pt] SONHANDO COM O IDEAL, PISANDO NO REAL, FAZENDO O POSSÍVEL: TRABALHO E VIDA DE PROFESSORES COMPROMETIDOS COM A PROFISSÃO DOCENTE HÁ MAIS DE 30 ANOS

CRISTINA SPOLIDORO FREUND 28 October 2009 (has links)
[en] This research investigated the life and work of teachers who for over 30 years feel committed to the teaching profession and succeeded in it. It seeks to understand through testimonies collected through semi-structured interviews, what contributed to these teachers to come to an advanced stage in their careers, showing enthusiasm and satisfaction with their work, commitment and concern for the learning of their students. From Esteve´s work about the unease of the teachers, and other researches (UNESCO, Tenti Fanfani, CNTE, Lapo and Bueno, Marchesi, Day) about the teaching condition, the importance of inquiry on issues that provide the well-being of teachers was emphasized. With the help of privileged informants, ten teachers were selected who met the following criteria: have enthusiasm in their work, attentive to students learning, have 30 or more years of teaching experience, still regency of classes acting in junior high school or high school, preferably in public school. The analysis of the evidence spoke with several authors, among them Esteve, Huberman, Lüdke, Charlot, Tardif and Lessard, Tenti Fanfani, Contreras, Dubar. The analysis sought to elucidate how the choice of profession, the teacher education and the early years in their careers, the professional trajectory of the teachers, their conceptions about education and the role teacher´s in our society influence on their sense of professional achievement. We searched to identify variations and permanences in the identity strategies and work of these teachers, and circumstances that made their tasks become easy or difficult. The interviewed teachers are very much involved by their work, satisfied with the profession, but they don´t feel themselves as finished products. They experience the difficulties as challenges that drive them in the search of innovatory solutions. The exercise of different teaching functions contributed to enlarge their vision on the school and function. And each one chose, among the possible trajectories, those that best met their aspirations. At the same time in which they were individualized, they were not isolated, looking for partnerships for a joint work, either with peers within the institution, or with professionals outside the school, in universities, unions or teachers’associations. Their competence is fed of these partnerships and of the constant search of the knowledge, based both on a posture of being a learner as the search constant continual education. They built good relationship with students and look forward to mobilize them for the pleasure of learning.

Espace urbain et danses contemporaines : usages de l'espace et espaces des usages / Urban space and contemporary danses : uses of space and spaces of uses

Brunaux, Hélène 10 February 2010 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on event-driven and performance, choreographic interventions; such interventions could either be created by cultural institutions or rise from self-organized activities occurring in public space. The main purpose of this work is to identify new spatial practices which have developed since the 80s in France, and how they are part of a gradual change in the broad spectrum of practices. Indeed, as art arrangements grew to become more and more spatially opened, new and unusual sociability forms appeared. These new forms fuelled the intrinsic dynamic of these new arrangements, leading them to be labelled as " in-between spaces ". It is thus revealed how actors' engagements are pluralized through the overlapping of different social worlds. These crossings between worlds add a great complexity to identity recognition processes in the dance world. New social, economic and corporeal practices appear at the interface of more legitimate spaces. However, by analyzing the careers from the different forms of socialization also leads to distinguishing between several types of collective actors which develop differentiated conceptions of territoriality. In this way, the competencies developed by certain dancers, choreographers and cultural intermediaries working in situ, are more (than others) the result of a real capitalization of spatial experiences which are invigorated by the embedment of different social worlds. These actors will then blur the limits of the dance job market, because their competencies will reflect professional socialisation and their engagements in different social networks in the world of dance.

Personal, public, and professional identities : conflicts and congruences in medical school

Beagan, Brenda L. 05 1900 (has links)
Most research on medical professional socialization was conducted when medical students were almost uniformly white, upper- to upper-middle class, young men. Today 50% of medical students in Canada are women, and significant numbers are members of racialized minority groups, come from working class backgrounds, identify as gay or lesbian, and/ or are older. This research examined the impact of such social diversity on processes of corriing to identify as a medical professional, drawing on a survey of medical students in one third-year class, interviews with 25 third-year students, and interviews with 23 medical school faculty members. Almost all of the traits and processes noted by classic studies of medical professional socialization were found to still apply in the late 1990s. Students learn to negotiate complex hierarchies; develop greater self-confidence, but lowered idealism; learn a new language, but lose some of their communication skills with patients. They begin playing a role that becomes more real as responses from others confirm their new identity. Students going through this training process achieve varying degrees of integration between their medical-student selves and the other parts of themselves. There is a strong impetus toward homogeneity in medical education. It emphasizes the production of neutral, undifferentiated physicians - physicians whose gender, 'race/ sexual orientation, and social class background do not make any difference. While there is some recognition that patients bring social baggage with them into doctor-patient encounters, there is very little recognition that doctors do too, and that this may affect the encounter. Instances of blatant racism, sexism, and homophobia are not common. Nonetheless, students describe an overall climate in the medical school in which some women, students from racialized minority groups, gays and lesbians, and students from working class backgrounds seem to 'fif less well. The subtlety of these micro-level experiences of gendering, racialization and so on allows them to co-exist with a prevalent individual and institutional denial that social differences make any difference. I critique this denial as (unintentionally) oppressive, rooted in a liberal individualist notion of equality that demands assimilation or suppression of difference. / Arts, Faculty of / Sociology, Department of / Graduate

A professional life in the hotel and restaurant industry : A qualitative study of work, culture, and community

Gunnarsson, Elin January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to understand and describe the meaning of employees’ work experiences of professional socialization in hotel and restaurants, and further describe the professional life that is created within the industry. Previous research shows that the industry consists mainly of young workers while those over 50 are few, which indicates that both young and old workers leave the industry. The gender distribution for the whole industry is even, but a closer look shows that kitchens are male dominated while the service-oriented professions are female-dominated. This contributes to the industry facing several challenges such as high staff turnover and sexual harassments. Based on this, there is a reason to further explore their professional life. Professional life is used as an umbrella term for the theoretical concepts: career, professional socialization, professional culture, professional identity, age, and gender. The results are based on 13 interviews with reception, serving and kitchen staff between the ages of 20-45. The result shows that the professional culture includes a harsh, and sexist jargon. Through the professional socialization, the employees must adapt and accept the culture by proving their willingness to a long-term career, participate in the jargon and create mutual relationships built on trust and respect. Employees are aware of the difficulty of ageing in the industry and therefore they start planning early in their careers for how to reduce the active work as they get older. Gender and age mainly affect women who need to adapt and accept the sexist jargon that can lead to discrimination. One of the conclusions are that an important part of professional socialization is to differentiate oneself from employees who see their work as a transitional profession and accept the tough professional culture. This, together with the impact that age and gender have, is significant for their professional identity and willingness to create a long-term professional life.
