Problems encountered by Foskor mine workers with the use of personal protective equipment

Pilusa, Mogale Ludwick 30 November 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to find out problems encountered by Foskor Mine workers in Phalaborwa with the use of personal protective equipment and also to find out how these problems can be prevented or solved. A quantitative research study was done using a questionnaire as a data gathering tool on workers who are exposed to occupational injuries and illnesses and who use personal protective equipment for their protection. The findings revealed that even though workers were using personal protective equipment they still got occupational injuries and illnesses. They also had problems with their protective equipment like incompatible types of personal protective equipment, such as weight where heavy personal protective equipment like boots were issued and very hot or cold personal protective equipment incompatible with the temperature of the environment. Some personal protective equipment like gloves were of a wrong size and caused allergy. In some instances unavailability of or unsuitable personal protective equipment posed challenges to these workers. / Health Studies / M. A. (Health Studies)

Analýza bezpečnosti práce v oblasti dopravy a servisních prací dopravních zařízení u vybrané firmy. / Analysis of safety in transport and servicing of transport facilities for the selected company

ŽAMBERSKÝ, Michal January 2014 (has links)
The thesis, entitled "Analysis of safety in transport and servicing of transport facilities for the selected companies" deals with safety and work-related injuries in transportation and servicing of transport facilities. Occupational injury is caused by a set of several interacting factors. These factors are known as the main source and cause of work-related accidents, which affect the formation of accidents. The most important element in the protection of health and safety is prevention. To evaluate the risks is one of the fundamental principles of the concept of occupational health and safety policy that is enforced in all countries espousing the principles of safe enterprise. The need to protect the health of the individual is already firmly established even in the most basic legal document such as the Constitution of the Czech Republic. The aim of this work is to analyze the factors that are involved in causing accidents at work and on the basis of the analysis, to provide rules and recommendations for farms so that they serve as an aid in the elimination of induced injuries.

Ochrana personálu při cytoredukční chirurgii a hypertermické intraperitoneální chemoterapii / Personnel safety during cytoreductive surgery and hypertermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy

Stein, Radim January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the protection of personnel in cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, focusing on non-medical healthcare workers - anesthetist nurses. The aim of the work was to analyze the knowledge of anesthesia nurses in the use of personal protective equipment, the specifics of selection for the given performance, the use of an electrocautery with integrated suction, the availability of decontamination aids In case of an accident of cytotoxic substances and if the staff is afraid of their own health. The data was obtained through a questionnaire. For the research were selected anesthesia nurses working in operating theaters in selected health care facilities in the Czech Republic. The total number of respondents who participated in the research was 35. The results of the survey revealed that the staff did not find out what PPEs are recommended for this type of operation. It's either because the staff is less linguistically equipped or does not know EBN / EBP or EBM. The staff only uses those PPEs that are available to them. As a good result, 49% of respondents use an integrated electric exhaust system. With regard to the availability of decontamination aids, I have found that most of the staff does not know whether these utilities are available at...

Intensivvården möter COVID-19 : Intensivvårdssjuksköterskans upplevelse av hur arbete i skyddsutrustning påverkar den vårdande relationen - En tolkande fenomenologisk intervjustudie / The intensive care meets COVID-19 : The intensive care nurse´s experience of how working in personal protective equipment affects the caring relationship - An interpretative phenomenological interview study

Norman, Johanna, Aronsson, Edvin January 2021 (has links)
Background: The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has forced the intensive care to make several adjustments. As part of restrictions to prevent spread of infection personal protective equipment (PPE) has to be used when in contact with infected patients. The use of PPE has introduced questions of its impact on the caring relationship between the patient and intensive care nurse.  Aim: The aim with this study was to illustrate the intensive care nurses experience of how working in PPE during the pandemic has affected the caring relationship with the patient.  Method: Semi- structured interviews was conducted with six intensive care nurses. The interviews served as data for an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).  Results: Four superior themes emerged from the analysis. In the theme focus on communication emerged different way of which the PPE has affected communication. The experience of being shielded emerged in the theme focus on distance where closeness was expressed as essential. In the theme focus on suffering was the PPE´s impact on touch described and also its potential cause of suffering. Emotions of inadequacy in regards to the caring relationship and powerlessness in regards of not being able to change or affect emerged in the theme focus on emotions.  Conclusion: The caring relationship has been affected by the use of PPE. PPE reduces the possibility of establishing a caring relationship which endangers the patient’s active participation. There is need for further research about affect with focus on prevention. An organizational awareness regarding PPE´s effect on the caring relationship could lay the foundation for interventions supposed to reduce its negative impact.

Kirurgiskt munskydd : En förstudie kring material, konstruktion och återanvändbara möjligheter / Surgical face mask : A feasibility study on materials, construction and reusable possibilities

Ström, Sara, Svenson, Julia January 2020 (has links)
In December 2019, the first cases of a virus called covid-19 were reported in Wuhan, China. The virus is spreading rapidly and in connection with the uncontrolled spread, the pressure on healthcare is also increasing. At the same time as healthcare is doing everything in its power to suffice, a global lack of protective equipment is reported. The manufacture of a surgical face mask, from fiber to finished product, consists of a comprehensive system and requires materials of specific fibers produced in advanced processes. Creating a face mask that possesses the possibility of reuse would have been an alternative with the aim of reducing the risk of face mask ending while minimizing disposable consumption. The purpose of this study is to analyze material selection, manufacture, construction and requirements for surgical face masks. The study also aims to explore alternative ways of creating a reusable face mask. The choice of method for collecting material has been based on literature studies of a primarily scientific nature. As the topic is highly current, news articles from trusted newspapers have been of value. Qualitative interviews were conducted with the aim of providing a clear insight into the healthcare work. A surgical face mask serves as a protective barrier against the transmission of infectious agents between staff and patients and is generally constructed in three different layers. The inner layer is made by a process called nonwoven meltblown, while the two outer layers, the upper and the lower, are made by a process called nonwoven spunbond. These three layers are then calendered together to form the filter media, which is then pleated and seamed in a converting line. The surgical face mask is a disposable item and is discarded immediately after use. Nawar Kadi, who is a professor at Textilhögskolan in Borås, is currently working on a project aimed at developing a partially washable face mask that thus functions to reuse. At present, there are many aspects to consider and questions to answer before the project can be realized in practice but with the right conditions, financial support and proven methods with underlying research, the possibility of creating a reusable face mask is not far away.

Arbetsmiljöutredning med Åtgärdsförslag för Svetsare vid Svetsning i Koppar : ABB Transformers Plåtverkstad / Study of Work Environment and Recommendations for Improvements for Welders when Welding in Copper : ABB Transformers Plate Shop

Isaksson, Linnea, Lemetti, Laura January 2012 (has links)
This thesis has been carried out at ABB Power Transformers in Ludvika at the plate shop, where large transformer boxes are welded together. The topic of the thesis was formulated together with our supervisor at the company, to assess air quality and work environment at the spot welding of copper. Copper exposure was suspected to be high, and an evaluation of air quality was needed. No previous exposure measurements when welding in copper have been made in the plate shop.   The purpose of this study was to evaluate and come up with three proposals for actions to create a better working environment for spot welding as well as to limit exposure to welding fumes generated during welding of copper. An exposure measurement of air pollutants during welding of copper was done to evaluate copper exposure compared to threshold limit values of substances in welding fume. Exposure measurements were made with personal monitors. In addition, measurement with stationary equipment and measurement with directreading instruments. The use of protective equipment and ventilation were studied. In connection with measurements interviews were made.   The results of exposure measurements showed that the occupational exposure limit value for copper was exceeded considerably during the spot welding with the MIG welding process. The threshold limit value of copper is 0,2 mg/m3 and the highest value measured was 1,05 mg/m3, measured outside the welding shield. Based on observations on the use of personal protective equipment it has been noted that protective equipment is available but not used to desired extent. Three control actions are proposed; (1) routines to change the respiratory protective equipment filter regularly, (2) start using local exhaust integrated in the welding gun to a greater extent and (3) improve the ventilation in the plate shop by installing displacement ventilation. The calculated costs for two of the actions, action (1) and (2), fulfill the company's payoff principle of 3 years.   The thesis will contribute to making all employees in the plate shop aware of the risks that the work involves exposure to welding fumes. But even that they think of their own and others' safety and health in their daily work and adopt measures that effectively reduce exposure to welding fumes. To invest in a good working environment involves costs, such as protective and risk education. However, this should not be viewed as a cost but rather that it is an investment in the long run, that improve employee health and performance at work. In conclusion: To invest in a good physical and psychosocial work environment is an investment to get an efficient and profitable business!

VISUAL DETECTION OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT & SAFETY GEAR ON INDUSTRY WORKERS

Strand, Fredrik, Karlsson, Jonathan January 2022 (has links)
Workplace injuries are common in today's society due to a lack of adequately worn safety equipment. A system that only admits appropriately equipped personnel can be created to improve working conditions and worker safety. The goal is thus to develop a system that will improve construction workers' safety. Building such a system necessitates computer vision, which entails object recognition, facial recognition, and human recognition, among other things. The basic idea is first to detect the human and remove the background to speed up the process and avoid potential interferences. After that, the cropped image is subjected to facial and object recognition. The code is written in Python and includes libraries such as OpenCV, face_recognition, and CVZone. Some of the different algorithms chosen were YOLOv4 and Histogram of Oriented Gradients. The results were measured at three respectively five-meter distances. As a result of the system’s pipeline, algorithms, and software, a mean average precision of 99% and 89% was achieved at the respective distances. At three and five meters, the model achieved a precision rate of 100%. The recall rates were 96% - 100% at 3m and 54% - 100% at 5m. Finally, the fps was measured at 1.2 on a system without GPU.
