<p>The aim of this case study was to measure the compliance, or not, of the library services and resources of Wesfleur public library to the twenty-two principles of UNESCO Public Library Manifesto of 1994. The UNESCO Public Library Manifesto is a global guideline and framework for public libraries around the world to use and also to measure their library services and resources. The City of Cape Town has adopted this manifesto for all the public libraries in the Metropole. Wesfleur public library is one of these public libraries. Limited research has been done globally to measure library services and resources with the UNESCO Public Library Manifesto. No research has been done in South Africa, and or, the Western Cape to measure public library services with reference to the UNESCO principles. This study is a contribution towards filling this gap.</p>

Våren 2013 er tolv litteraturhusprosjekt etablert eller under utvikling i Norge. Litteraturhustradisjonen stammer fra Tyskland, og konseptet er utbredt i Europa. Norges første litteraturhus åpnet i Oslo i 2007. I Trondheim initierte forfattermiljøet et litteraturhusprosjekt i 2008, og prosjektet engasjerte bibliotekmiljø, politikere, journalister, næringsdrivende og lokalmiljø. Engasjementet skapte en uvanlig lang og fyldig kulturdebatt i Adresseavisen, grunnet uenighet mellom de involverte aktørene. Denne oppgaven belyser hvorfor konflikt oppsto i debatten om etablering av Litteraturhuset i Trondheim, og ser nærmere på litteraturhusprosjektet og hvilke verdier samarbeidspartnerne i prosjektet bidrar med, jf. Pierre Bourdieus teori om ulike typer kapital. Oppgaven inneholder nærlesning av Styringsgruppa for Forprosjektet Litteraturhuset i Trondheims Prosjektbeskrivelse, en historisk oversikt over litteraturhus og folkebibliotek, detaljert gjennomgang av litteraturhusdebatten slik den framstår i Adresseavisen mellom 2008-2013, nærlesning av debattinnlegg for og mot etablering av et litteraturhus og intervju med berørte parter. Hovedfunnene i oppgaven er at konflikten vokste fram i hovedsak på grunn av kommunens kulturpolitikk og bibliotekmiljøets forsvar av egne interesser i møte med en ny litteraturarena. Høyre og Venstre ville støtte litteraturhusprosjektet økonomisk, og bidra til et kulturelt løft i byen. Arbeiderpartiet og Fremskrittspartiet fremmet arealeffektive kompromissløsninger. Bibliotekloven av 2013 forsterker folkebibliotekenes ansvar for aktiv kulturformidling og debatt, to av litteraturhusets kjernepunkter. Loven skaper gråsoner mellom bibliotek og litteraturhus, og berører en nasjonal debatt om folkebibliotekets utvikling og framtid i Norge. Den lokale og nasjonale debatten om litteraturhus viser strømninger i norsk kultur, hvor interessen for samfunnsbevissthet og -debatt er økende.

First, a study was made of various writings in the field of librarianship which have undertaken to define the duties and responsibilities of library boards and of librarians. From these a set of standards has been developed in the broad areas of organization of the board, division of responsibilities between librarian and board, and general policies. Second, board-librarian relationships in Florida were studied, the investigation limited to public libraries which have budgets of $5,000 a year or more and which are governed by library boards. Since no records of present problems in Florida public libraries are available, a questionnaire was devised and sent to public libraries which have annual budgets of $5,000 or more and which have governing boards. The findings have been summarized and tabulated. Magister Bibliothecologiae - MBibl / The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) is a tool through which the present government in South Africa wants to implement transformation in regard with raising the standard of living of the people in all spheres of life. Libraries are often seen as important agencies for information dissemination and other services. Public libraries have a vital role to play in the achievement of the MDGs. Stakeholders all over the spectrum need to collaborate with libraries to achieve these goals by 2015. The study investigated the role of the public library in realising some of the MDGs by means of a case study of Groenheuwel Public Library. The aim of this case study was to determine how this public library contributes to the development of Groenheuwel. Empirical research techniques were used to determine whether public libraries contribute to the well-being of the community of Groenheuwel and to the achievement of certain targets for the Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) provide a framework for libraries and information services to develop and align their strategies and access their contribution towards their countries (Kaniki, 2008:16). The methodology applied was a quantitative questionnaire which included open-ended questions, which explored the role of the public library in the respondents' lives. The study made use of random sampling; the population of the study was adult library users. Every third library user was asked to complete a questionnaire over a period of two weeks. The data collected, informed the researcher what the purpose of the adult users' visit to the library was and whether the library addresses MDGs directly or indirectly. The findings should provide empirical evidence of the impact of public libraries, with reference to Groenheuwel public library, in addressing some of the Millennium Development Goals. The researcher hopes that this study will convince local government and decision makers to expand the library to a bigger library, to render an effective and efficient library service with added staff members and that the community find the library valuable and vital for their information needs.

Thesis (M.Dev.) --University of Limpopo, 2018 / Recent transformation in the new democratic South Africa has impacted negatively on the management of public libraries. Before 1994, public library services was the responsibility of the municipality. After 1994, the Provincial government was compelled to render the services. Most of the public libraries are still funded by their municipalities as unfunded mandate. The uncertainty about a clear definition of the relationship between municipalities and provincial library service impacts negatively on the management of public libraries in Limpopo Province. The study intended to investigate the impact of the management of public library towards community development in Molepo. The dynamic nature of the functions of management namely planning, organising, delegating, marketing, policy making and implementation were discussed in full to show the importance of leadership in the public library arena. In order to achieve intended objectives of the study, the researcher employed both qualitative and quantitative research designs. The researcher collected qualitative data through semi structured interviews while quantitative data was collected through questionnaires. Target population was librarians working in Molepo library and members of school management teams. The sample of the study comprised of fifty school management team and ten librarians. In order to achieve the objective of the study, the researcher has employed both random and stratified sampling to collect data from 60 participants. According to the findings, most of the people believed that the management should be transformed and innovate so as to achieve the intended objectives of the public library at Ga Molepo. Based on the findings, it is clear that the success of public library management towards community development in Ga Molepo depends solely on a visionary leader who has participatory and consultative style of leadership. In order to achieve the above process, all stakeholders should be consulted and involved towards the management of the public library. The study further recommended that the library management needs to adopt the latest business management strategies

Sensory marketing An effective instrument for libraries?   We are living in a world of constant communication and information and because of that, marketing in general seem to have no distinctive effect. Consumers become overwhelmed by all the advertising messages. Due to this, it is clear that organizations like libraries must create a deeper and more personal connection to increase user satisfaction and foster the use of services, among both users and potential users. One way to achieve this is to make use of all the emotional elements of a product or a service. This make the user perceive the service more as an experience instead of just its functioning. By putting the five senses in focus it´s possible to create an experience and with integration of all five senses more value can be added. Previous studies on this subject are rather thin and therefore the authors found it interesting to investigate whether this phenomenon could be an effective approach for libraries.The purpose of this exploratory study is to investigate how a number of selected libraries are working with stimulation through the five human senses in their marketing. The study consists of a qualitative approach. Four personal interviews with informants from four libraries have been conducted. The conclusion of this study is that the library does not work with sensory marketing, but for some of the library's activity, sensory marketing could further develop the activities and create a greater value for both the visitors and the libraries. There are some difficulties though, when sensory experience is somewhat subjective and the library is a place for everyone.
