UNDERSTANDING WHY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT APPLICANTS CHOOSE A PUBLIC FOUR-YEAR INSTITUTIONDarby, Mark Gene 01 March 2015 (has links)
The purpose of Understanding Why International Student Applicants Choose a Public Four-Year Institution was to apply a mixed-methods research approach to California State University, San Bernardino’s (CSUSB) international student population to better understand the factors associated with an international student’s decision-making processing to study abroad.
Internationalization by institutions reflects the current two million international students studying around the world. In recent years internationalization has become more of an economic driving force, whereas in the past it was an opportunity for diversifying knowledge and research. Studies on push and pull factors reflect reasons why international students have decided to go abroad. Factors range from lack of access at home institutions for various programs to the desire to learn about Western culture. Seeing as the population of these studies is so diverse ethnically and culturally, it is important to be mindful of the various forms of capital students possess as an international student and the uniqueness this brings to each students experience.
A questionnaire was utilized to gather quantitative data to provide descriptive statistics of the population, and interviews were conducted with participants to acquire the rich stories. The questionnaire submissions resulted in 52 returned surveys for a response rate of five percent. Six interviews were conducted, which provided a diverse group of international student representation for the analysis of the rich text allowing for a strong understanding of this specific case study.
Based on the interviews conducted, responses reflected many of those that previous studies found. All but one interviewee mentioned the costs of attending as a deciding factor. Reputation of the institution and prestige of a US degree were also factors mentioned by the majority of participants. Both participants from African countries mentioned a lack of program availability as a reason to go abroad, while both Indian participants mentioned the desire to work after graduating for experience before returning home. Interestingly, most participants mentioned a connected family member to either the institution itself or the state of California as a reason for choosing CSUSB.
The data that were collected for the purposes of this study did show some correlation to previous studies findings. The qualitative data proved useful in better understanding the needs of specific students, while also alluding to potential geographic considerations that need to be had when recruiting abroad and meeting the needs of international students around the world.

Assessing Standard-compliance Of Public Institution Web Sites Of TurkeyYalcinkaya, Sinem 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Since 2003, almost every public institution has developed a web site through etransformation project (eDTr) in Turkey. When there are so many institutions and different web sites, a need for standard becomes inevitable. To address this need, a standard was published by TÜ / RKSAT A.S. in January 2009 which constitutes of the rules and recommendations for these web sites referencing international web standards as well.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the compatibility of public institutions&rsquo / web sites in Turkey with the TÜ / RKSAT standard. In this study, 32 rules are selected to be verified for 50 public institution web sites. 20 of the rules are verified with a tool named WSSCV which is developed in the context of this thesis, 5 of the rules are verified with a commercial tool named Total Validator, and 7 of the rules are verified manually.
Results show that, the standard prepared by TÜ / RKSAT is not used during the development of a public institution web application. Compliance of the checked web sites to the standard is very low. However, the standard also needs to be updated according to today&rsquo / s technology.

The purpose of this study is to present research results about the knowledge of managers of UNIFESP about the public administration process in academic life. The study population was composed by 17 university administration managers, which 14 of them are managers of the central administration of UNIFESP and three are directors of the university's campuses. The data collection was held using an instrument composed of two parts: characterization form of the subjects and attitudinal scale of Likert type. For the systematization and analysis of the information collected, a digital version of the form was developed in Microsoft Access version 2013 database. The results show that the subjects realize: the need of their know-how and/or their knowledge for their practice exercise, and they configure themselves as the main agents in the conduct of the transformations in work process and the existence of a new conception of manager to deal with the changes of the working world. But, most of them don't realize themselves with autonomy in their professional practice. The data point to the inexistence of training politics and staff development, lack of quality indicators for the servers’ evaluation and of the institution's contribution to the development of the necessary skills for the performance of the function. The participants indicate the importance of permanent education processes for public institutions managers, as well as they indicate the need for movements and process that valorize the knowledges of the practices and experiences of them. It's concluded that the technological advance and the globalization of education and information have brought new configurations to the IFES. Administrative and academic skills need to be integrated and directed to satisfy these demands, specifically the working world. For a good management of the IFES is necessary to form leaderships that enable them to fulfill their social commitment. As a product, it's presented a research technical report that can support formation actions and development of managers in the university itself.

Previous issue date: 2012-02-24 / Much of the research with a focus on management and coordination of projects have been in offices of private projects, developers and builders. However, one must consider the fact that it is not just a private building. Among federal agencies there are the universities. With the launch of the REUNI in 2007, the volume of work at the Federal University of Viçosa - UFV increased considerably showing problems that were not previously perceived. In this context, and the lack of research into the Construction Engineering related to this issue at UFV, this study aimed to map and analyze the production process of public buildings, including the planning, execution and control, as the object study the internal bureaucratic procedures in the current process for the production of projects and works of the institution. The research was qualitative in nature, and investigation was developed relying on field research for this mapping process. Therefore, it was conducted semi structured interviews with those involved from the beginning to the end of the process, analysis of the procedures adopted by the team, analysis of documents used and produced during the process, analysis of integration between those involved. Through research it was possible to confirm the need for an update of the institution regarding the design process and execution of works and the importance of establishing a project management program to improve the quality and speed of projects and building production of the institution.

Fonctionnement des marchés et évolution des formes d’habitat dans les territoires à faible tension foncière en Bretagne / Functioning of markets and evolution of the forms of housing environment in the low-voltage territories land in BrittanyPoussin, Jean-Christophe 03 October 2014 (has links)
Ces enjeux sont ensuite déclinés en recommandations dans unedernière partie de la thèse / Sustainable land management is a leading stake in Brittany, where the artificialisation of land tendencies turn out worrisome. This stake invites to wonder about the conditions and the forms of a more respectful urban development. We know that the land resource, is, by definition, limited in space. In this context was created in 2009 “l’Etablissement Public Foncier de Bretagne”, a public state operator positioning as a tool in the service of the Breton communities to accompany them in the elaboration of their land strategy and the implementation of operations, in the priority domain of housing. The creation of this new structure intends to participate on a regionalscale in the regulation of markets and in the emergence of more virtuous operations. Our reflection aims at analyzing the mechanisms of interrelations between working of markets and evolution of urban forms by focusing on the “intercommunal” level and the low land pressure territories. These territories are indeed little surroundedby researches even though they establish, because of moderate costs of the land, the new "receptacles" of the urban sprawl. From the study of 4 “intercommunaux” territories and the analysis of the words held by various metactors, the thesis highlights tracks of stakes for a control of land markets by housing operations. These stakes are then declined in recommendations in the last part of the thesis

Barriers to Curricular Change in General Education Mathematics at a Large Public InstitutionJorgensen, Marcus 01 May 2014 (has links)
This qualitative study looked for barriers to curricular change in general education mathematics at a large public university (LPU) in the Western United States. The literature showed that a number of national organizations dealing in math education have recommended alternatives to the traditional algebra-intensive curriculum. LPU still relies predominantly on traditional College Algebra as its quantitative literacy (QL) course. With such an algebra-heavy emphasis, students may be missing more relevant and useful mathematics. In addition, the College Algebra course has a low success rate, which becomes a barrier to student retention and graduation. Interviews were conducted with 14 participants who included faculty, staff, and administrators. Analysis of the data showed 12 barriers that were grouped into four clusters: goals, control, quality, and communications. Finally, recommendations in each of the four clusters are offered for removing barriers, considering alternative curricula, and designing an intentional curriculum around QL learning outcomes.
