The Gricean Theory of Implicatures (1989) and The Relevance Theory of Sperber & Wilson (1995) were applied as a method of theoretical analysis in three selected publicity audiovisuals. So, the linguistics and cognitive phenomena that are involved in the advertising audiovisual message, can be objectively observed. A research with the viewers and the scene directors of the publicity audiovisuals was implemented in order to legitimate the analysis. Thus the required objectives were accomplished and the hypotheses were corroborated. From the theoretical observations and the result analyses, was possible to recognize and prove that the inferential communication theory was true, to verify the message understanding through the implicits.

Festucci, Anne Carolina January 2014 (has links)

Bearing this in mind, we developed this study, with the hopes of demonstrating how meaning is built in advertising discourses, which have a double function: to communicate and to convince. Furthermore, we aim to highlight concession, while a linguistic phenomenon, as an effective persuasive tool, as well as explain the relevance of the interlocutor's projection so that the advertisement reaches its goal. Therefore, we based this work on theories which start from Plato's notion of alterity, include Saussure's concepts of language, speech and value, Benveniste's concept of empty signs and his studies on subjectivity and intersubjectivity, and arrive at the present days, with the studies of Oswald Ducrot and Marion Carel on building meaning and semantic blocks. Based on this theoretical analysis, we demonstrate how meaning is established in statements by argumentative chains and internal and external argumentation. Thereafter, we lay emphasis on the meaning generated by concession, which evokes a transgression of the norm, thus conducting the interlocutor to a universal and positive judgement about what is offered him. Consequently, our corpus is constituted of advertising pieces which are similar because they have concessive statements in their discourses. As a result, we intend to evidence how advertising language, which is deeply imbued with subjectivity and intentionality, uses linguistic resources to obtain the much desired persuasive effect.

No. of bitstreams: 1 000455458-Texto+Completo-0.pdf: 1230252 bytes, checksum: ac6313a3fdfdab96ac5e52719186b0cb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014 / This dissertation aims to investigate the production of meaning by the use of adjectives in the discourse of advertising by means of a semantic-linguistic approach. This work is based on the Theory of Argumentation within Language, by Oswald Ducrot and Jean-Claude Anscombre, and its most recent version, the Theory of Semantic Blocks, by O. Ducrot and Marion Carel. Both theories explain how meaning is built through a linguistic perspective, disregarding factors external to language. Argumentation is conceived as the construction of meaning by a speaker who produces discourse by using the words of language. The Theory of Semantic Blocks classifies adjectives as operators, which may perform in discourse as modifiers or internalizers. Adjectives operate in discourse by modifying the value of a term, either by acting on its graduality or reorganizing the words that constitute this term. In this study we investigated how an adjective may relate to other components in the discourse through the analysis of the argumentative value of the adjective in the characterization and description of the products presented in advertisement. The corpus of this research is composed of a selection of advertisements published in Portuguese by Brazilian magazines. The results of our analyses indicate the performance of adjectives as modifiers of the word they are applied to, as well as modifiers of discourse. Thus, adjectives partake in the construction of the argumentation that corroborates the speaker’s subjective and intersubjective point of view.

This study assumes that advertising is at the service of the market and, hence, looks forward to increase the interest of consumption. Therefore, examination of communication contracts also allows to identify how are established the strategies of concealment of marketing bias and seduction which in turn, through the enchantment, aim at achieving the objectives of consumption. Finally, through the theory of semiolinguistica Patrick Charaudeau and semiotic analysis in discursive level of Greimas and Courtes, the following five ads audiovisual of the University are analyzed: We want anyone who wants more, produced in 2004, To know is to live, produced in year, 2005; Transformation, produced in year 2008, 40 years, produced in year 2009 and Institutional 01 20, produced in year 2010.

Thus, some aspects of this theory were considered, such as ostensive-inferential communication, mutual manifestness, the individual’s cognitive environment, the construction of context and deductive reasoning underlying human condition. In order to exemplify how human inferential process occurs, five audiovisual advertisements were selected because they represent a situation-type of communicative interaction. Therefore, internal inferences from the film were considered, but informative and persuasive features adopted by publicity were not described in this first analysis. Through these movies, it was possible to corroborate this theoretical framework, especially the processing effort and cognitive effect aspects in a conversation. For several authors, this dichotomy represents a problematic point, because is not clear how the speaker access the listener’s efforts to get optimal relevance. For this reason, this aspect was also evaluated during the internal inference analysis. It was shown how the audience gets the advertisers’ communicative intention and that is why external inferences of the commercials were also analyzed. These external inferences are beyond the characters’ communicative exchanges, which allow an investigation about how the implicit information of these movies is understood by its public.

This study aims at analyzing discursive aspects that involve the construction of the subject image of the speaker and interlocutor, observing effects of meaning produced in the scenes set up in five classified ads for sexual services of different newspapers in different regions of Brazil. As specific objectives, to: (a) verify the development of research, articulated language marks the discursive situation that create the picture of the individual speaker, noting the words used to name and physical characteristics of their sexual activity, (b) to observe discursive as the image of the subject party, to whom the advertisement is intended emerges within the discourse of the speaker, (c) analyze dialogic relations introduced by the choice of sign in the ideological self-naming of the subject of discourse in the notice, paying attention to the refractions of the sign; (d) examine how the various social voices (views) interact in the ads, by analyzing the words used. As the central theoretical basis, this paper resorts to ideas of linguistic theory of the dialogic discourse, developed by Mikhail Bakhtin and his Circle. These theoretical reflections enable the study enunciative-discursive operation and refraction of meanings of the words mobilized in the classified ads for sexual services that create the discursive image of the speaker and the speaker of the ad. The five selected classified ads for this investigation were taken from the newspaper Zero Hora, Porto Alegre, and Agora the Rio Grande, both represent the South Region, Folha de S. Paulo, the city of São Paulo, Southeast Region, Diário do Pará, in Belém, representing the North of the country, and the Diário do Nordeste, in Fortaleza, Northeast Region. Regarding the methodology of analysis, we have made, first, the individual analysis of each ad, taking into account the ideological signs evoked in the speaker's self-naming, physical characteristics, the characteristics of sexual activity, in addressing the statement / announcement and the appearance and crossover of social voices. Hereafter, considering that the statements are made dialogically in the chain of discursive communication, the five ads were placed in dialogic relation, in order to be checked against the characteristics of the utterances. So, trying to reflect on the discursive processes of classified ads, we show how effects of consumption are refracted in the discursive image of the speaker and interlocutor in the advertisement of sexual services. In addition, we see how certain types of idealized men and women are aired in the media and especially in advertising, starting from the analysis of dialogical relations introduced by the various social voices. These voices echo from the ideological signs engendered the discourse of the ad and reveal the various points of view about the body sex and pleasure.
