Pulling Tangled Strings: "The Puppeteer" and Other Stories

Berryman, Archer 08 1900 (has links)
Pulling Tangled Strings: "The Puppeteer" and Other Stories is a collection of stories with strong thematic and emotional connections that includes an opening preface describing the process used when writing the stories. Each of the stories is united by a main character that desperately wants to gain control of his environment. From a character acting out a classic revenge tale on his friend to a comatose teenager victimized by an ambiguous tragedy, these are characters who have been put into difficult life situations and need to feel like they are pulling the strings in their lives again. In all cases, however, the characters come to find that control does not come easily and that the motivations for their behavior are never clear cut, even to themselves.

Expanding KTH's Canvas ecosystem to support additional automated services : Automating the injection of theses and their metadata into a digital archive / Utöka KTHs Canvas-ekosystem för att stödja ytterligare automatiserade tjänster : Automatisera injektionen av avhandlingar och deras metadata i ett digitalt arkiv

Whenever a student submits their final version of their thesis, a series of processes is triggered to finalize and archive the report. These processes are often handled in a less than efficient way which results in excessive manual labor and costs that can be prevent if automated. This report describes a solution that automates the series of processes that occur following a final thesis report submission. By utilizing the available information in a Canvas course and the content in the submitted thesis much of the manual cut-and-paste effort is avoided. Entering this data into DiVA is done by automated interaction via a browser, as DiVA does not have an application programming interface that could be used. The conclusion is that it is possible to automate this process through a headless browser. However, the automated parsing of the PDF version of the thesis proven to be inconsistent which results in the extracted data being inconsistent. With some improvements to the parsing module, the entire process could be fully automated.

Automating the extraction of Financial data

Rollino, Nicolas, Ali, Rakin January 2022 (has links)
It is hard for retail investors and data providing companies to attain financial data of European companies. The work of extracting financial data of European companies is most likely done manually, which is a time-consuming process. This would explain why European companies’ data is supplied slower than American companies. This thesis attempts to see if it is possible to automatise the process of extracting financial data of European companies by creating two proof of concept systems. One focuses on collecting financial reports of European companies using a web scraper and directly scrapes the reports from the source. The other system extracts financial data from the reports using Amazon Web Services(AWS), specifically the text extraction tool called Textract. The system that collects financial reports from companies could not be automated and did not meet the expectations set by the company that commissioned the thesis. The system that extracts financial data from companies was promising as all data points of interest could be extracted. The second system was deemed promising however since it is reliant on a system that supplies it with reports, it cannot be implemented. The work conducted shows that automating the process of extracting financial data from European companies is not (yet) possible. Extracting the data from reports is possible however collecting the report is the bottleneck which is not possible. It would have been better to manually collect financial reports instead of using a web scraper in this thesis. This was a bottleneck which could be solved in future projects.

Loutkař, nejstarší odborný časopis o loutkařství na světě (1912-2009) / The Puppeteer, the Oldest Journal in the World of Puppetry (1912-2009)

Pivodová, Eva January 2012 (has links)
Puppeteer, World's Oldest Periodical Focused on Puppetry (1912-2009) Diploma Thesis Eva Pivodová Abstract This thesis focuses on the history of the magazine Czech Puppeteer (Český loutkář), or Puppeteer (Loutkář), the world's oldest continuously published periodical of its kind. The first 3 chapters describe in detail the magazine's transformations between 1912- 1950, its further existence is described more briefly in the final chapter. The resource material consisting primarily of the published issues of the magazine served as the basis for historical analysis. The text also puts the history of the magazine into context with the development of puppetry and it includes references to relevant theatrical literature. The magazine was founded by Jindřich Veselý in 1912 in Prague. In the first period of its existence (1912-1913), it helped to integrate the Czech puppetry community and it emphasized the values of genuine Czech puppet theatre. After 1917, Puppeteer (Loutkář) continued to publish both theoretical and practical articles. In 1940, it was replaced by Puppet Theatre (Loutková scéna). But Puppet Theatre was soon cancelled as well and so the only periodical focused on puppetry published during war was a simple cyclostyled bulletin. After the war, the renewed Puppet Theatre had to adapt to the new...

Less Detectable Web Scraping Techniques / Mindre Detekterbara Webbskrapningstekniker

Färholt, Fredric January 2021 (has links)
Web scraping is an efficient way of gathering data, and it has also become much eas- ier to perform and offers a high success rate. People no longer need to be tech-savvy when scraping data since several easy-to-use platform services exist. This study conducts experiments to see if people can scrape in an undetectable fashion using a popular and intelligent JavaScript library (Puppeteer). Three web scraper algorithms, where two of them use movement patterns from real-world web users, demonstrate how to retrieve information automatically from the web. They operate on a website built for this research that utilizes known semi-security mechanisms, honeypot, and activity logging, making it possible to collect and evaluate data from the algorithms and the website. The result shows that it may be possible to construct a web scraper algorithm with less detectability using Puppeteer. One of the algorithms reveals that it is possible to control computer performance using built-in methods in Puppeteer.

Loutkoherci, gymnasté, kramáři a šlejfíři. Proměny životních strategií světských rodů od konce 18. do počátku 20. století / Puppeteers, gymnasts, vendors, blade sharpeners. Changes of life strategies of itinerant lineages between the late 18th and early 20th Centuries

TLAMSOVÁ, Hanka January 2016 (has links)
The hereby presented thesis pursues the occupations of puppeteers, gymnasts, vendors, blade sharpeners and changes of life strategies of itinerant lineages between the late 18th and early 20th Centuries. Above all, the research was anchored at various registers - firstly comprising registry offices, censuses, registers of homestead participants or residence applications. These were supplemented by the then public press, remembrances of contemporaries and other sources. The historical and demographical analyses based upon genealogical outputs were the dominant methodological background, the subject of which primarily became the characteristics of itinerant individuals and their place within society. The author also inquired into their ethnic origins and specific ways of earning one´s living. The pivot of this treatise, nonetheless, was to reveal true historical circumstances having once brought into life a number of widespread clan legends. Neither marriage strategies were omitted as they provided proof of certain behavioural patterns of both the itinerant and settled individuals. Last but not the least, attention was paid to the sojourn and life en route within this roving peripheral community, the presupposed uniqueness of which was fully proved in every respect.

Connections Between Voice and Design in Puppetry: A Case-Study

Skiles, Ryan 01 January 2015 (has links)
Puppets have been entertaining, educating, and mesmerizing American audiences since the birth of our nation. Both in live theatrical events and TV/film, audiences have watched puppeteers bring their puppet characters to life with clever voice quality choices, unique characterizations, and vivid visual designs. This thesis is a case study that first borrows insight from cartoon character designers, animators, and voiceover actors to provide considerations for voice quality choices, characterizations, and design elements when creating a new puppet character. It then investigates the connections that exist between those three elements once a puppet is fully realized. In order to identify these connections, a test was developed in which participants were asked to use a set of blank puppet heads/bodies and a variety of facial features to each build a unique character and then provide their puppets with a unique character voice. The data collected from the test was then deconstructed and analyzed by comparing each included design element to specific Estill Voice Training System™ vocal attributes identified within each individual puppet character's voice to find where connections occurred. The goal of this thesis is to provide a systematic method for creating vibrant and rich original puppet characters.
