Performance comparison between reciprocating and scroll compressor heat pumps with R600a refrigerant

KRONSTRÖM, CHRISTOFER January 2021 (has links)
A performance comparison of heat pumps using a scroll (Sanden) and a reciprocating (Bitzer) compressor was conducted experimentally. The refrigerant used was R600a (isobutane). The heat pump components were evaluated performance-wise through: volumetric and isentropic efficiency of the compressors; the UA-value of the condensers and evaporators; sensible enthalpy differences between the liquid and the suction line in the internal heat exchanger; and overall heat pump system comparison as the coefficient of performance. The Bitzer heat pump had existing measuring devices and equipment installed, and it was already filled with refrigerant. The Sanden heat pump required installation of equipment and measuring devices and a refrigerant refill. The refrigerant charge was decided according to the criteria of the lowest compressor speed, which had an effect of overcharge for higher speeds. The measurements included the temperature of water and refrigerant, pressure of the refrigerant, water volume flow, and compressor power. The heat pumps performances were then evaluated based on these parameters. The Sanden compressor showed higher volumetric efficiency than the Bitzer compressor, for the two lower (out of three) speeds of the compressor. The isentropic efficiency of the Bitzer compressor proved to be higher for all pressure ratios out of the three speeds respectively. The condenser in the Bitzer heat pump showed proper UA-values based on the temperature differences between refrigerant and heat sink. The UA-values of the Sanden heat pump condenser did not increase with compressor speed which then gave a larger temperature difference between refrigerant and heat sink, for the two higher compressor speeds. The evaporators had a similar issue with the temperature difference between refrigerant and heat source, which also showed on the UA-values. The internal heat exchanger in the Bitzer heat pump had a larger sensible enthalpy difference on the suction side compared to the liquid side, when condenser subcooling was low, indicating that some fraction of refrigerant was being condensed instead. The Sanden heat pump instead had higher condenser subcooling and the sensible enthalpy difference showed to be very low in the internal heat exchanger. Finally, the coefficient of performance showed to be slightly higher in the Bitzer heat pump for almost all evaluated condensation and evaporation temperatures.

The event was inserted in the National Plan for Elimination of CFCs, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The objective of this research is analyze the performance of the hydrocarbons application as zeotropic mixtures in domestic refrigerator and validate the application of technical standards for pull down and cycling (on-off) tests to the mixture R290/R600a (50:50) in domestic refrigerator. It was first developed an computational analysis of R290/R600a (50:50) compared to R134a and other mass fractions of the hydrocarbons mixtures in the standard ASHRAE refrigeration cycle in order to compare the operational characteristics and thermodynamic properties of fluids based on the software REFPROP 6.0. The characteristics of the Lorenz cycle is presented as an application directed to zeotropic mixtures. Standardized pull down and cycling (on-off) tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the hydrocarbons mixture R290/R600a (50:50) as a drop-in alternative to R134a in domestic refrigerator of 219 L. The results showed that the use of R290/R600a (50:50) with a charge of refrigerant reduced at 53% compared to R134a presents reduced energy performance than R134a. The COP obtained with hydrocarbon mixture was about 13% lower compared to R134a. Pull down times in the refrigerator compartments for fluids analyzed were quite close, having been found a 4,7% reduction in pull down time for the R290/R600a compared to R134a, in the freezer compartment. The data indicated a higher consumption of electric current from the refrigerator when operating with the R290/R600a. The values were higher than about 3% compared to R134a. The charge of 40 g of R290/R600a proved very low for the equipment analyzed / Esta pesquisa est? baseada no semin?rio Uso de Fluidos Naturais em Sistemas de Refrigera??o e Ar-Condicionado realizado em 2007 na cidade de S?o Paulo. Flow boiling heat transfer, pressure drop and dryout characteristics of low GWP refrigerants in a vertical mini-channel

Anwar, Zahid January 2014 (has links)
Two-phase heat transfer in mini/micro-channels is capable of meeting the high cooling demands of modern high heat flux applications. The phase change process ensures better temperature uniformity and control for local hot spots. Furthermore, these compact channels could be helpful in reducing the required charge and material inventories.Environmental concerns—mainly ozone depletion and global warming—have instigated a search for new alternatives in refrigeration industry. While new compounds are being developed to address stringent legislative demands, natural alternatives are also coming into prominence. A limited number of investigators have reported on thermal performance of such alternatives. The current study is therefore focused on saturated flow boiling heat transfer, pressure drop and dryout characteristics for three low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants (R152a, R600a and R1234yf) in a vertical mini-channel.In this study experiments were carried out by uniformly heating a test section (stainless steel tube with 1.60 mm inside diameter and 245 mm heated length) at 27 and 32 oC saturation temperature with 50-500 kg/m2s mass velocities. The effects of various parameters of interest (like heat flux, mass flux, system pressure, vapor quality, operating media) on flow boiling heat transfer, frictional pressure drop and dryout characteristics were recorded. R134a, which has been widely used in several applications, is utilized as a reference case for comparison of thermal performance in this study.Experimental results for saturated boiling heat transfer showed strong influence of heat flux and system pressure with insignificant contributions from mass flux and vapor quality. Two phase frictional pressure drop increased with mass flux, vapor quality and with reduced operating pressure. The dryout heat flux remained unaffected with variation in saturation temperature, critical vapor quality in most cases was about 85%. The experimental results (boiling heat transfer, two-phase pressure drop and dryout heat flux) were compared with well-known macro and micro-scale correlations from the literature. / <p>QC 20141124</p>

Non-adiabatic capillary tubes in high efficiency household refrigerator: an experimental study

Bardoulet, Laëtitia Véronique 21 November 2018 (has links)
Capillary tube with liquid-to-suction heat exchanger (CT-LSHX) is a component widely used in household refrigerators. Recent works have indicated that even when measuring subcooled conditions at the condenser outlet, the actual capillary tube inlet is two phase-flow. The aim of this PhD thesis is to examine the actual conditions at the capillary tube inlet of a household refrigerator by using an innovative test bench. Transparent tubes were set up at the condenser outlet and capillary tube inlet. The experimental visualisation campaign reveals that the capillary tube inlet was two-phase flow despite the measurement of a certain subcooling, regardless of the filter position (horizontal or vertical), flow direction (upward or downward) and refrigerant charge. This study also demonstrates that the filter was not acting as an accumulator since the liquid level of the capillary always followed the capillary tube entrance, regardless of the capillary tube length inside the filter. Two hypotheses were then posed to explain the phenomenon: a non-equilibrium condition of the refrigerant and/or an unbalanced matching between compressor and capillary tube, that is, the system would be equipped with a capillary tube with a notably large expansion capacity compared to the needs of the compressor. The original refrigerant-to-air condenser was replaced by a refrigerant-to-water condenser to assess, from the heat balance at the water condenser, the refrigerant conditions at the condenser outlet and therefore, at the capillary tube inlet. Measurements indicate a non-equilibrium two-phase flow composed of subcooled vapour and liquid at the capillary tube inlet. To verify if the presence of two-phase flow was due to unbalanced matching between the capillary tube and compressor, the test bench design was modified by using a smaller capillary tube diameter and increasing compressor speed. Fully liquid conditions at the capillary tube inlet were reached with this new configuration. A performance analysis comparison between a capillary tube inlet composed of vapour and liquid and a capillary tube inlet composed of only liquid was also performed. Results reveal that COP were higher in cases of fully liquid conditions at the capillary tube inlet. / Bardoulet, LV. (2018). Étude expérimentale et simulée d'une installation de thermofrigopompe pour la production de froid et le dessalement / Experimental and simulation study of a heat pump for simultaneous cooling and desalination

Diaby, Ahmadou Tidiane 30 November 2017 (has links)
A heat pump or a refrigerating device produces simultaneously cooling and heating energies. The objective of this research is to develop the concept of heat pump for simultaneous cooling and desalination. Desalination is carried out by recovering the heat rejected by the condenser of the machine. The desalination technique, chosen thanks to the literature review, is AGMD (air gap membrane distillation) because of the compatibility of operating temperatures with the condensing temperature of standard heat pumps. AGMD was characterized using a pilot for different conditions of temperature, flow rate, air gap thickness and solution compositions. A long term study associated to scanning electron microscope images enabled to evaluate the fouling level of the membrane. A numerical model was then developed using the first experimental results. Simulations have revealed patterns of behaviour for a coupled heat pump and AGMD machine. Finally, a prototype was built with a small refrigerator and an AGMD cell manufactured by 3D printing. Experimental measurements were used to validate the concept of heat pump for simultaneous cooling and desalination and to obtain promising performance results. The valorization of the heat lost by refrigeration equipment for desalination seems therefore an interesting solution to overcome the lack of fresh water that can occur in many regions of the planet.

Energy Efficiency Improvements in Household Refrigeration Cooling Systems

Björk, Erik January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is based on eight articles all related to the characteristics of the cooling system and plate evaporator of a household refrigerator. Through these articles, knowledge is provided that can be used to increase the operational efficiency in household refrigeration. Papers A, B and C focus on heat transfer and pressure drop in a commonly used free convection evaporator – the plate evaporator. Applicable correlations are suggested on how to estimate the air side heat transfer, the refrigerant side pressure drop and the refrigerant side heat transfer. Papers D, E and F hold a unique experimental study of the refrigerant charge distribution in the cooling system at transient and steady state conditions. From this cyclic losses are identified and estimated and ways to overcome them are suggested. In paper G the topic “charging and throttling” is investigated in an unparalleled experimental study based on more than 600 data points at different quantities of charge and expansions device capacities. It results in recommendations on how to optimize the capillary tube length and the quantity of refrigerant charge. Finally, Paper H holds a thermographic study of the overall cooling system operating at transient conditions. Overall, a potential to lower the energy use by as much as 25 % was identified in the refrigerator studied. About 10 % was found on the evaporator’s air side. 1-2 % was identified as losses related to the edge effect of the evaporator plate. About 8 % was estimated to be cyclic losses. About 5 % was found in cycle length optimization.  It is believed that most of these findings are of general interest for the whole field of household refrigeration even though the results come from one type of refrigerator. Suggestions of simple means to reduce the losses without increasing the unit price are provided within the thesis / <p>QC 20120411</p>
