Contested Safety: Monsanto's "Roundup Ready" Agricultural Assemblage versus Counter Discourses of Roundup

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have a polarizing effect in the US. The first commercially viable GMO was Roundup Ready Soy, introduced by Monsanto in 1996, to be used in conjunction with Roundup herbicides. This thesis investigated and delineated the development and deployments of the discourse of Monsanto’s agricultural assemblage of Roundup Ready seeds and Roundup herbicides and its resistant discourses. Monsanto builds its discourse around the safety and necessity of Roundup Ready seeds through federal regulation and toxicology studies. Resistant discourses deployed by Monsanto’s critics problematize Roundup safety and reject Monsanto’s contention that GMOs are necessary for meeting world’s food demands. The discourse analysis pursued in this thesis explored interactions between the dominant discourse and counter discourses and charted their deployments in Colorado’s and Oregon’s 2014 ballot measures that would have required mandatory GMO labeling. Analysis suggested counter discourses were successful in mobilizing people to engage civically. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Communication Studies 2015

No. of bitstreams: 2 Carine_Cantu_2018.pdf: 977649 bytes, checksum: 41148d5ff61316392a5cc7795d616f39 (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-02-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The cultivation of RR (Roundup Ready®) soybean has increased over the past few years and, as a result, changes regarding weed management have been evidenced, with emphasis on the intensification of glyphosate use. However, research results report that in some cases, the herbicide has caused phytotoxic effects on the soybean crop. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of manganese and of the bioregulator in reversing possible damages caused by glyphosate herbicide in RR soybean. Two experiments were carried out during the 2016/17 crop in Palotina, PR. In the first experiment, the experimental design was a randomized block design in 5 x 4 factorial arrangement with 5 doses of glyphosate (0; 720; 1440; 2160 and 2880 g. e.a. ha-1) and 4 doses of manganese (0; 92,4; 184,8 and 369,6 g ha-1). Glyphosate and manganese were applied together via foliar at V4 stage. The variables evaluated were: chlorophyll index, plant height, insertion height of the first pod, number of pods, 1.000 grain mass and yield. The results showed the glyphosate effect in reducing the number of pods per plant due to the increase of herbicide doses. Regarding the foliar application of Mn, there was an increase in the number of pods per plant and consequently in yield. It was observed that an increase in Mn doses up to 261,64 g Mn ha-1 increased grain yield. In the second experiment, the experimental design was a randomized block design, in 5 x 4 factorial arrangement with 5 doses of glyphosate (0; 720; 1440; 2160 and 2880 g. e.a. ha-1) and 4 management (manganese application; bioregulator application; association of both; no application). The glyphosate, manganese and bioregulator were applied together via foliar at V4 stage. The evaluated variables were phytotoxicity symptoms and others described in the first experiment. Under the environmental conditions of this experiment and for the evaluated genotype, the application of glyphosate in the studied formulation, regardless of the dose used, presented very mild phytotoxicity symptoms in the RR soybean plants and the management applied (bioregulator and Mn) was not effective as phytotoxicant reversers. Therefore, phytotoxicity did not interfere in the evaluated agronomic characteristics and production components. Despite the results verified in these experiments, in general, the cultivar under study showed to be highly tolerant to glyphosate, considering that the herbicide had no effect on the vegetative and reproductive development of soybean plants to the point of reducing grain yield. It is highlighted the need for additional studies in order to evaluate other genotypes, locations and years/crop and to reassess the potential of using manganese and bioregulator in the management with glyphosate in RR2 soybean.

A sustainable assessment in the convenience food sector : ready-made meals

Schmidt, Ximena Carolina January 2015 (has links)
The food industry has an essential role in society and in the global economy. Nowadays, modernlifestyle demands convenience, which is driving the development of the food sector. This isparticularly evident with convenience food, especially ready-made meals, industrially preparedfood, which only requires a short preparation time at home by consumers, but has very complexand diverse supply chains and is associated with a range of sustainability issues. Therefore, theaim of this research is to evaluate the environmental, economic and social sustainability in theready-made meals sector with the focus on the UK market. A life cycle approach has been used forthese purposes, using life cycle assessment (LCA) as the tool for the environmental analysis, lifecycle costing (LCC) for the economic aspects and social sustainability indicators (SI) for the socialissues. Different types of ready-made meal from different cuisines have been considered, includingthe British, Italian, Chinese and Indian. The highest environmental impacts are found for the Italian and Indian cuisines, while Chinesemeals are environmentally most sustainable, followed by the British. At the sectoral level, theresults suggest that from ‘cradle to retailer’ the British ready-made meal sector contributes 4.45 Mtof CO2 eq. annually, which represents ~4% of the GHG emissions of the food and drink sector and~1% of the UK GHG emissions. Of this, 3.16 Mt of CO2 eq. is emitted by chilled and 1.28 Mt of CO2eq. by the frozen ready-made meals. The total life cycle costs at the sectoral level from ‘cradle tograve’ are estimated at £2.1 bn, with the chilled ready-made meals market contributing £1.42 bnand the frozen £676 million. The life cycle costs from ‘cradle to retailer’ are £1.02 bn, with the valueadded of £958 million. The common environmental and cost hotspot for all the meals studied is rawmaterials. In particular, the meat, fish and seafood are the greatest contributors. For theenvironmental impacts, the manufacturing and distribution stages are also important, while theconsumption stage is the largest contributor to the costs. The major social aspects are the foodrelated health issues and food security, in particular food affordability. In the supply chainagriculture, wholesale and retailers show high risk for indicators such as wages and employmentwhile the manufacturing presents high risk in fatal injuries. The study also shows that consumer choices play an important role for the economic andenvironmental impacts; therefore, educational programmes and better communicational strategiesshould be implemented by the industry, the government and consumers groups. Moreover, toensure a sustainable development of the ready-made meals sector, future policies and industrialinitiatives should consider a life cycle approach including relevant economic, environmental andsocial aspects.

EL ENSAMBLAJE ESCULTÓRICO: ANÁLISIS Y TIPOLOGÍAS OBJETUALES EN EL ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO MEXICANO

Estévez Kubli, Pablo Joaquín 13 July 2012 (has links)
(2012). AGENT-BASED MODELING TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OFRUN HIDE FIGHT

Jae Yong Lee (6618806) 15 May 2019 (has links)
<div>The 1999 Columbine High School shooting was a bold reminder which emphasized the importance of active shooter preparedness for the first responder communities and the general public. Since Columbine, the preparedness for active shooter incidents (ASIs) both in the public and private sectors proactively took place. Currently, the RUN.HIDE.FIGHT.{\textregistered} (RHF) response for unarmed individuals is implemented as part of the emergency response throughout the United States. Despite the RHF's nationwide implementation, there is a lack of literature that supports the effectiveness of RHF to lower casualty rates during ASIs. </div><div></div><div>This thesis examined casualty differences of RHF and the shooters' discharge interval by creating the incidents that have occurred in the library during the 1999 Columbine High School shooting with AnyLogic's agent-based modeling capabilities. Recreating ASI in a virtual environment naturally removes the participants’ physiological and psychological implications. Additionally, the flexibility of agent-based modeling allows validating the model based on the historical events than to run various what-if scenarios. The outcome of this thesis examines the effectiveness of RHF by comparing the output data from the actual event to models with RHF implementation.</div>

Ševčík, Michal January 2017 (has links)
ŠEVČÍK, M. Environmental-economic aspects of cultivation of selected genetically modified plants in European Union. Diploma thesis. Mendel University in Brno. Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies, 2017. This diploma thesis deals with the topic of cultivation of selected genetically modified crops in the EU. Literature part describes population development and food production in Europe after the Industrial Revolution, while the other parts are focused on the mechanism of genetic modification of crops, the potential impacts of their cultivation, as well as the perception of this issue in the public and interest groups followed by description of the past and current state of GM crop cultivation in the EU, with particular emphasis on the legislative and institutional framework of the issue. The literature part is concluded by comparison of the environmental and economic impacts of growing MON810 maize on the territory of the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, and a subchapter on the potential benefits of growing Roundup Ready Soy in the EU. The practical part of the thesis presents the results of a one-year soybean experiment with the aim of finding the optimum types and dose of fertilizers for the highest yield and nutritional value of the seed. On the basis of these results, the author of the thesis then estimates the potential of introducing genetically modified soybean - Roundup Ready variety, in EU.
