Advances in the Side-Channel Analysis of Symmetric CryptographyTaha, Mostafa Mohamed Ibrahim 10 June 2014 (has links)
Side-Channel Analysis (SCA) is an implementation attack where an adversary exploits unintentional outputs of a cryptographic module to reveal secret information. Unintentional outputs, also called side-channel outputs, include power consumption, electromagnetic radiation, execution time, photonic emissions, acoustic waves and many more. The real threat of SCA lies in the ability to mount attacks over small parts of the key and to aggregate information over many different traces. The cryptographic community acknowledges that SCA can break any security module if the adequate protection is not implemented. In this dissertation, we propose several advances in side-channel attacks and countermeasures. We focus on symmetric cryptographic primitives, namely: block-ciphers and hashing functions.
In the first part, we focus on improving side-channel attacks. First, we propose a new method to profile highly parallel cryptographic modules. Profiling, in the context of SCA, characterizes the power consumption of a fully-controlled module to extract power signatures. Then, the power signatures are used to attack a similar module. Parallel designs show excessive algorithmic-noise in the power trace. Hence, we propose a novel attack that takes design parallelism into consideration, which results in a more powerful attack. Also, we propose the first comprehensive SCA of the new secure hashing function mbox{SHA-3}. Although the main application of mbox{SHA-3} is hashing, there are other keyed applications including Message Authentication Codes (MACs), where protection against SCA is required. We study the SCA properties of all the operations involved in mbox{SHA-3}. We also study the effect of changing the key-length on the difficulty of mounting attacks. Indeed, changing the key-length changes the attack methodology. Hence, we propose complete attacks against five different case studies, and propose a systematic algorithm to choose an attack methodology based on the key-length.
In the second part, we propose different techniques for protection against SCA. Indeed, the threat of SCA can be mitigated if the secret key changes before every execution. Although many contributions, in the domain of leakage resilient cryptography, tried to achieve this goal, the proposed solutions were inefficient and required very high implementation cost. Hence, we highlight a generic framework for efficient leakage resiliency through lightweight key-updating. Then, we propose two complete solutions for protecting AES modes of operation. One uses a dedicated circuit for key-updating, while the other uses the underlying AES block cipher itself. The first one requires small area (for the additional circuit) but achieves negligible performance overhead. The second one has no area overhead but requires small performance overhead. Also, we address the problem of executing all the applications of hashing functions, e.g. the unkeyed application of regular hashing and the keyed application of generating MACs, on the same core. We observe that, running unkeyed application on an SCA-protected core will involve a huge loss of performance (3x to 4x). Hence, we propose a novel SCA-protected core for hashing. Our core has no overhead in unkeyed applications, and negligible overhead in keyed ones.
Our research provides a better understanding of side-channel analysis and supports the cryptographic community with lightweight and efficient countermeasures. / Ph. D.

Characterizing the Dynamics of Vulnerability for Roadway Infrastructure SystemsDehghani Sanij, Mohammad Saied 30 December 2013 (has links)
Critical infrastructure systems, such as transportation, energy, water and communication, are the backbones of sustainable economic and social development. The tragedies and catastrophic events in the past few years have motivated researchers to study the vulnerability of infrastructure systems to disastrous events. A number of existing studies address roadway networks where researchers have characterized the robustness and vulnerability of roadways to earthquakes, floods, and targeted attacks.
However, extreme events with infrequent return periods are not very likely to occur in a 50-60 year analysis period of roadways, while many roadways are located in areas that are not even exposed to floods or earthquakes at all. On the other hand, roadway network endogenous characteristics such the condition and degradation over time not only increases the vulnerability of roadways to disastrous events, but also makes the roadway network vulnerable to disruptions that are caused by maintenance and repair activities on the roadways system. Nevertheless, the impacts of these endogenous network characteristics on roadway vulnerability have not been explicitly addressed in the existing studies.
This dissertation introduces the concept of condition-based vulnerability assessment (CBVA) to capture the effect of roadway endogenous characteristics such as condition and condition uncertainties, roadway network deterioration over time, topological properties of roadways, and travel rate and travel pattern on the dynamics of roadway network vulnerably. First a methodological framework is developed and the method is applied to an illustrative roadway system. The results show that the vulnerability of roadway system is more affected by the average condition of the roadway network than by the condition of individual roads in the system. Moreover, the findings show that small uncertainties associated with the condition of individual roads can significantly increase the variance of the predicated vulnerability.
This initial methodological framework is then enhanced to account for physical degradation of the network over time and network equilibrium, and is applied to a real highway system. For the network studied network degradation increases roadway system vulnerability in a nonlinear mode. The result also suggest that the network vulnerability pattern is not very sensitive to travel pattern and link topological properties when the average network disruption probability (representing average network condition) is less than about 0.5. In other words, at low values of average disruption probability, it does not matter what link has what disruption probability level or how the travelers move across the network. However with further network degradation and as the average network disruption probability increases, the dynamics of network vulnerability depends on travel pattern on the network as well as on the link topological properties. / Ph. Times of transition are laden with ambiguity, and the move from high school to college has an additional component of role changes to add to this uncertainty. In the spring and summer of 2020, this transition was disrupted by the changes brought on by the pandemic, affecting social norms, routines, and overall mental health outcomes. For professionals such as counselors and advisors to be able to provide specialized support, it is important to understand emerging adults' experiences at this time and to identify factors that helped them cope with this transition. Understanding the development of coping strategies has direct implications for both therapy and clinical practice which can work together to provide a higher quality of care for the people affected by the stress of major life transitions. In this study, I used a mixed-methods design to understand the experience of emerging adults who graduated high school during the pandemic, and the relation between tolerance for ambiguity and coping strategies, resilience, and psychological impact. / Master of Science / The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on so many of us here in the United States and abroad. This was a time in which so much of what we considered normal was totally disrupted by all of the changes that the pandemic caused. For my thesis I wanted to look at how the pandemic changed the ways that students who were in high school transitioned and moved on to college. I wanted to know what existing factors such as their ability to handle uncertainty impacted this transition and if it ended up being helpful for them. For this project I looked at how a person's ability to handle uncertainty, called tolerance for ambiguity in this study, impacted students abilities to cope with uncertainty, psychological impact of the pandemic, and resiliency overall.

The Lived Experience of Vicarious Resiliency and Growth in Psychologists Who Work with Trauma Survivors2015 December 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to gain insight into how psychologists experience resiliency, satisfaction, and personal growth despite the challenges (e.g., vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue) of working with trauma survivors. While it cannot be ignored that many psychologists experience negative effects related to working with traumatized clients, it is important to acknowledge the potential to experience resiliency and growth from their work with trauma survivors. Interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used to explore the lived experiences of vicarious resiliency and growth in psychologists who work with trauma survivors. Data was collected through an in-depth individual semi-structured interview with six psychologists. The data generated was transcribed and analyzed using an interpretive phenomenological analysis (Smith & Osborn, 2003). Results revealed four major themes: privileging a shared journey, developing purpose and personal growth, deriving positive meaning, and serving humanity with an overarching theme of maintaining resiliency. The current study provided a valuable contribution to the limited literature on psychologists’ ability to foster positive outcomes for themselves through focusing on resiliency, satisfaction, and growth, despite the inherent risks of trauma work. Applications to practice and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Clement / Contemporary design of the urban environment focuses increasingly upon the quality of space found within the public right-of-way. Landscape architects and urban planners are beginning to ask new questions that deviate from the conventional streetscape designs of the latter half of the 20th century. Under the mantra “complete the streets,” communities all across America are calling for a paradigm shift towards multimodal, pedestrian-scaled urban rights-of-way. At the same time, existing stormwater and combined sewer infrastructure is nearing the end of its productive lifespan in cities all across the country and world. The direct costs associated with repairing this infrastructure combined with the indirect costs of poor water quality and a greater frequency and intensity of flooding events downstream present a strong argument for developing new, innovative ideas about how to best design the stormwater infrastructure of tomorrow.
The reintegration of ecological processes into the urban fabric will act as a catalyst for the appreciation of genius loci (spirit of the place) and user meaning while mitigating downstream flooding, increasing water quality, and extending the lifespan of existing stormwater infrastructure. By studying the hierarchical categorization of urban rights-of-way according to increased levels of user orientation, this research project aims to clearly articulate a new theoretical framework for expanding upon the current discourse surrounding “complete streets” and “green streets” theory.
In the long-term, it is both economically and socially profitable for cities to use ecological processes to reclaim auto-oriented, urban rights-of-way as valuable public space for the health, safety, and welfare of all their users.

Thesis (PhD (Sport Science))—University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of two different types of movement programs on movement competence, self-esteem and resiliency in adolescent girls from a low-socio economic environment. A non-equivalentcontrol-group design was followed. A total of N=63 girls from similar socioeconomic environments between the ages of 13-14 participated in the study. The
subjects were divided into three groups. The pre-tests and post-tests were administered to all groups. Four motor fitness/motor ability tests were selected to gather data about movement competence. The Self-Perception Profile for Children (Harter, 1985) was used to measure self-esteem and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (Connor & Davidson, 2003) was used to measure resiliency. Only two of the groups received intervention programs. One group received 20
sessions in an expressive dance movement program called Biodanza and the other intervention group received 20 sessions in self-defence.
