The Capital Park Steam and Railway History Museum: Implementing a Holistic Methodology for Contextual Museum Architectural Design - The Rovos Rail Estate

This dissertation focuses on the development of the site in and around Rovos Rail. Rovos Rail is a unique train travel company cut off from the public view. The project context is located in Capital Park adjacent to Transnet Avenue. The primary purpose of the site was to accommodate railway-related workshop facilities that provisioned and maintained the trains and carriages on their way to the industries of Johannesburg. Rovos Rail has done much in terms of the conservation of railway history in Pretoria. This ambition should be celebrated and built upon. It is necessary to promote the conservation of the rich railway history of South Africa and understand the impact thereof on the contemporary landscape. In order to understand the significance of contextualism, research based on philosophical, theoretical and practical lenses will be conducted. The argument relies on understanding the context through these different lenses. The historical significance of the site is celebrated. The dissertation places it within the historical continuum of both the larger context of Pretoria and the smaller context of the surrounding community. Through the design of a Steam Locomotive Museum next to Rovos Rail, a holistic approach, based on contextualism theories and South African case studies is illustrated. The project proposal establishes a physical connection with the historically significant structures of the site and emphasises the historical layers. Inspiration is drawn from the existing railway lines, the existing platform, ecological features and buildings. The chosen function, that of the museum, intends to act as the arbitrator for the diversity of narratives of an ever-evolving landscape, be it manmade or natural. The museum represents a prototype for the methodology proposed. (The Municipalities and the Iron Horse. A study about the municipalities in western Småland and their impact on the shutdown of the passenger traffic on the railway line Värnamo-Kärreberga). C-level.    The purpose of this essay is to explore the actions taken during 1960 to 1970 by relevant municipalities in regards to the shutdown of the passenger traffic on the railway line Värnamo-Kärreberga in 1968. The study also aims to bridge the areas of municipal and railroad history using this event as a focus for both disciplines and it will hopefully provide a more nuanced picture of the event itself concerning the roles the municipal governments had during the shutdown. The study employs primarily the method of text analysis and the source material is based on city council protocols from the municipalities themselves as well as a couple private archives.    The shutdown of passenger traffic on the railway sparked different levels of reaction from the municipalities, ranging from the largely passive to the almost defiant. Tensions were high as the region were poised to lose part of a transportation system that had been operational since 1899 and had deeply impacted the region’s societal and economic development. In order to solve the problems however, the councils showed the pragmatism that was characteristic of the Swedish municipalities at the time.   Key words: Municipal history, railway history, communication history, local history.

Seu espaço de trabalho é comparável ao de uma indústria pelas atividades que exerce. No estado de São Paulo, as oficinas da Companhia Paulista, em Jundiaí, tiveram um papel importante na era ferroviária brasileira, e seu espaço funcional foi especialmente projetado para atender uma grande demanda de serviços e modificado ao longo dos anos com o mesmo propósito. O presente trabalho investiga a arquitetura da oficina ferroviária da Companhia Paulista, na cidade de Jundiaí, a fim de compreender seu espaço funcional e tem como objetivos específicos levantar informações sobre as principais oficinas ferroviárias do estado de São Paulo; identificar empresas e profissionais envolvidos com o projeto de construção das oficinas de Jundiaí e como ocorreram essas participações; apurar a relação entre arquitetura e tecnologia a fim de entender se a edificação foi construída de maneira apropriada à atividade industrial da época; se o sistema construtivo da oficina de Jundiaí seguiu algum tratado e diferenças e semelhanças entre a oficina da CPEF de Jundiaí e outras que possuam ligação com nosso objeto de estudo. Their workspace is comparable to that of an industry, for its activities. In Sao Paulo’s state, Companhia Paulista workshops, in Jundiaí, played an important role in the Brazilian railway era, and its functional space was specially designed to meet a high demand for services and was modified over the years for the same purpose. This paper investigates the architecture of the Companhia Paulista railway workshop, in the city of Jundiaí, in order to understand its functional space and has as its specific objectives to gather/raise information about the main railway workshops of the state of São Paulo; identify companies and professionals involved with the construction project of Jundiaí workshops and how these participations occurred; investigate the relationship between architecture and technology in order to understand if the building was built in a appropriate way to the industrial activity of the time; if the building system of the Jundiaí workshop followed any treatise and differences and similarities between the Jundiaí workshop and others that are linked to our object of study. Kaum ein Unternehmen in Deutschland steht derart häufig im Fokus einer kritischen Betrachtung durch die Öffentlichkeit wie die Deutsche Bahn. Über Themen wie “Pünktlichkeit”, “Service/ Kundenorientierung” oder die Fahrzeugproblematik wird nicht nur in den Medien regelmäßig berichtet und kontrovers diskutiert. Sehr oft wird hierbei das bestehende Bahn-Image als verbesserungsbedürftig betrachtet. Ausgehend von der These, dass sich die Bahn schon länger mit einem eher schlechten Image auseinanderzusetzen hat, die Eisenbahn früher jedoch einen besseren Ruf genoss, werden die Bahnen in Deutschland näher untersucht. Die Forschungsfrage lautet: Wie haben sich die beiden Parameter “ökonomischer Erfolg” und “Image” verkehrshistorisch betrachtet in den vergangenen acht Jahrzehnten im jeweiligen verkehrspolitischen und gesellschaftlichen Umfeld für die Eisenbahnunternehmen in Deutschland verändert? Welche Aussagen können zum Ruf der Bahn in der jeweiligen Öffentlichkeit getroffen werden? Die Arbeit gliedert sich in drei Teile, bestehend aus dem Theorieteil, dem verkehrshistorischen Teil und dem empirischen Teil. Teil 1 Ausgangspunkt ist der Theorieteil. The neuroses of the railway : trains, travel and trauma in Britain, c.1850-c.1900

This thesis explores some aspects of the cultural history of the railway during the latter half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth. It argues that the railway was of central importance in creating and shaping Victorian attitudes to the machine and to mechanized civilization in a world increasingly dominated by large scale-technologies. In particular, it explores the significance of negative responses to the railway - fear, anxiety, nervousness, alarm, revulsion - in influencing a range of social, cultural and medical responses to the perceived degenerative threat of technological civilization. The four chapters of the thesis are organized so as to provide a progressive tightening of focus on particular aspects of the railway's significance in this context. The first, most wide-ranging, chapter explores the ways in which the Victorian railway was perceived as both an icon of progress and civilization and as a disruptive, threatening, destructive force. In particular, it seeks to establish the deep-rooted, enduring and influential nature of the fear and anxiety which the railway provoked. The second chapter is concerned with the railway journey as an experience, relating the ambivalence with which the railway was viewed to the journey as a sensory, physical and mental experience. The third chapter focuses on the accident as the most dramatic instance of the dangers of the railway, and relates its significance in contemporary culture to the wider context of the fears provoked by increasingly powerful and potentially destructive technologies. The fourth and final chapter explores the phenomenon of 'railway spine', the obscure nervous condition supposedly suffered by railway accident victims who had seemingly received no actual organic injury, but nonetheless displayed nervous, mental and physical symptoms of serious bodily disorder.
