Rouette, Annik January 2004 (has links)
This dissertation concerns the multilingual structure found in the fictitious works of French writer Raymond Queneau (1903-1976) by examining the different languages of genres that occur in this author's first novel, Le Chiendent (1933). The distinctive style of literary discourse and the diversity in the languages of interspersed genres found in this novel are examined. The stylistic analysis is inspired primarily by the Bakhtin theory and aims to shed light on Queneau's language-related practices in a fictitious context. The author's linguistic theory is then examined in order to better understand the philosophy that underlies this innovative practice. The dialogic function of the spoken language and the encyclopedic variety of discourses are some of the aspects considered as essential for accessing the ethos of this novel.

The influence of scholarly research on the orchestral performance practice of Raymond Leppard

Lu, Shu-Ling January 2002 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of scholarly research on the orchestral performance practice of conductor Raymond Leppard. This study presents, with supporting evidence, what an international conductor does today to incorporate the results of research into the interpretation of music. From this study, the writer has presented the influence scholarly research has had on orchestral performance practice, how one of today's conductor and orchestras deal with the issues raised and how they are carried into current performances, and to what degree do musicologists influence his performance. Orchestra conductors continue to learn from performance practice research and young conductors must be encouraged to gain knowledge from this field.Three scholarly musicians, Arnold Dolmetsch (1858-1940), Edmund H. Fellowes (1870-1951), and Thurston Dart (1921-1971), among many others, did much to revive authentic performances of earlier music. Their critical and historical writings are based on original sources and the concept of interpretation by studying composers' original manuscripts and editions in order to better present their musical style and heritage. This developed a strong movement towards the study of incorporating authentic music research into music performance.Maestro Leppard is known particularly for his interpretations of seventeenth and eighteenth century music. He prepared the revivals of Monteverdi and Cavalli's Italian operas. Maestro Leppard has had many experiences with European and American orchestras and has made many recordings. The contents of the interview focused on (1) orchestra size and seating, (2) the authenticity of music, (3) some basic performance practice elements such as tempo, rhythm, dynamics, articulation and phrasing, ornamentation, vibrato, and portamento, (4) string bowing, (5) editions, and (6) interpretation and personal observations. / School of Music

Personagens ficcionais, tipos de David Keirsey e a educação: um estudo da sitcom \"Everybody Loves Raymond / Fictional characters, David Keirseys types and Education - a study of the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.

João Sergio Cury Lauand 13 May 2011 (has links)
The temperament theory of David Kersey indicates that each individual was born with a disposition to act and behave in certain ways according to his type. People with different temperaments have different interpretations of events, will react to these interpretations in different manners, will make choices based on different criteria, and will deal with situations in different manners. Keirseys theory is also important for education: teachers and parents should take temperament into account in order to improve their understanding of the students. This thesis aims to make Keirseys (ideal) types (ISTP, ESFJ etc.) more concrete by fleshing them out into fictional characters: the Barone family of the TV series Everybody Loves Raymond. Throughout the episodes of the sitcom, we can see three-dimensional and believable characters: ordinary people living ordinary lives according to their temperament types. In Everybody Loves Raymond we have in action, like in real life, an ESFP (Raymond), an ESTJ (Debra), an ESFJ (Marie), an ISTP (Frank) and a NF/SJ (Robert). They make easier to recognize, understand and discuss different types of temperament on important educational matters (learning, conception of the school, guilt, duty etc.)

Marxismo, comunicação e cultura - Raymond Williams e o materialismo cultural / -

Fábio Palácio de Azevedo 25 April 2014 (has links)
Cultural Materialism is a methodological approach in contemporary cultural theory. It is \"a theory of the specificities of material cultural and literary production within historical materialism\", as defined by Raymond Williams (1921-1988), a leading figure associated with this perspective. Founder of the British tradition of cultural studies, Williams conceived culture not from traditional, romantic/idealist viewpoint of established literary criticism, but as being the material product of society. The work investigates the intellectual and political connections between Cultural Materialism and the Marxist tradition, through a dialogue involving classical Marxism and the works of Gramsci and Raymond Williams. The author argues that Cultural Materialism has contributed to an advance in the historical-materialist conception of culture, helping to expand its horizons and to overcome the difficulties that Marxism previously faced when addressing problems of communication and culture. The author also shows how Cultural Materialism can serve as a conceptual reference in contemporary political struggles for the democratisation of communication and culture.

The experience of nothingness in the fiction works by George Bataille and Raymond Queneau

Rousseau, Guillaume 13 May 2016 (has links)
This PhD work is devoted to the subject of Nothingness in the fiction works by George Bataille and Raymond Queneau. A comparative reading of those two authors is far from obvious in theory because their works are so remote from each other, from a thematic point of view as well as from a stylistic point of view. However, both authors are intent upon turning the novel, and literature in general, into a thought provoking place enabling them to face the fundamental problems of Man. It is for that reason that they address the nothingness of life, a source of anguish prone to provoke vertigo. In a first part, we will reflect upon the building of that experience of nothingness, by underlining that it derives from a frame of mind as varied as heterodox, mirroring the intellectual emulation that is a key feature of the friendship between Bataille and Queneau. In a second part, we will more specifically wonder about the interest of fiction writing to deal with the subject of nothingness, in particular in relation with philosophy. The last part focuses on the question of reading which enables to turn Nothingness inscribed in the texts into a real experience. Throughout this work, we thus show the uniqueness of a literary thinking in its problematic relation with philosophy.

Materialismo cultural / Cultural materialism

André Luiz Glaser 25 September 2008 (has links)
Raymond Williamss Cultural Materialism, working as a formulation of a new cultural theory inscribed in Marxs historical materialism, takes part in one of the most polemical and productive debates in the Marxist tradition the question of the economic determinantion of culture and the arts. The present dissertation has as its aim a critical reading of Marxism and Literature, book in which Williams thoroughly exposes his theory. Being of an expositive kind, its discussion will be conducted along with the study of some of Williamss literary and cultural analyses, bringing forth his method both theoretical and practical the analyses producing the theory that, in its turn, reorganizes the forms of understanding reality.
