The newspaper press in the town of Reading 1855-1980

Watts, A. T. January 1990 (has links)
The subject of this study concerns the history and development of the newspaper press in the town of Reading from 1855, the year of the repeal of the Newspaper Stamp Tax, until 1980. In particular the approach to this account of provincial press history has been primarily from the production viewpoint, in which the newspapers are seen as business enterprises, emphasis being placed on the patterns of ownership and processes of production rather than on readership and newspaper content.

ARHQ-vux : En kvantitativ förstudie om utformandet av ett screeningverktyg / ARHQ-vux : A quantitative pilot study of the design of a screening tool

Ögren, Kathrine January 2018 (has links)
This quantitative study examines whether the English screening tool ”Adult Reading History Questionnaire” works in a Swedish context or not. The essay is based on a formation of a new screening tool called ARHQ-vux. The intention was to find out whether a person might be dyslectic or not. ARHQ-vux is based on components such as heredity factors and how the informants experienced school as a child. The screening tool was tested in a sample of 71 adult students at five different adult educational institutions in the north of Sweden. To measure the validity a correlation was made between ARHQ-vux and the already standardized Swedish screening tool DUVAN. This study shows that the tool ARHQ-vux successfully can be used as a reliable screening tool to identify adults who might be at risk of dyslexia.

Popular literature and reading habits in Britain, 1914-1950

McAleer, Joseph January 1989 (has links)
This thesis is an examination of the mass-market publishing industry in Britain after the First World War and of the 'literature' read by the lower-middle and working classes: novels and weekly magazines. We chronicle the development of the industry both generally and through the experiences of three publishers, examine the activity and motivations of the reading public and consider the treatment of contemporary issues and attitudes within popular fiction as a useful barometer for the historian. There are seven chapters. Chapter 1 considers the period before 1914 in order to provide the necessary background for an understanding of the focus of this study, 1914-1950. The origins of the popular publishing industry and Wilkie Collins' 'Unknown Public' are examined and continuities with post-1914 popular literature traced. In Chapter 2 a broad overview of our period is conducted: the development of the industry and of the market, the influence of war and the depression, and the effect on reading of the growth of other leisure activities. Chapters 3 and 5 look at the reading habits of adults and children/adolescents from the lower-middle and working classes. In both cases contemporaries and readers themselves seemed to think 'escapism' was paramount in the selection of 'light' fiction and there was therefore a significant continuity between child and adult reading. Finally, Chapters 4, 6 and 7 focus on the histories and influence of three publishers of popular fiction during this period. These include two of the most successful (Mills and Boon, D.C. Thomson) and in contrast, a prominent but declining firm (The Religious Tract Society). In each case the complex relationship between market forces and editorial policies is discussed. We conclude that a reciprocal relationship existed between publisher and reader, with the latter dictating much of what was published. Popular fiction, moreover, served to reinforce predominant stereotypes and ideological views of society rather than to impose specific doctrine.

O trabalho desses bibliotecários resultou em 14 "Códices de Consulta Pública", que compreendem o período de 1833 a 1856, encontrados atualmente na Seção de Manuscritos dessa mesma biblioteca. Esta dissertação volta-se para o conjunto de obras de Belas Letras solicitadas; destacando, em seu interior, os romances. A partir do estabelecimento dos títulos e autores, são identificados e comentados os mais solicitados. A pesquisa revela também quem são os leitores mais assíduos de romances e analisa seu perfil / Abstract: In the early nineteenth century, employees of the Bibliotheca Nacional e Pública do Rio de Janeiro (now Biblioteca Nacional) have decided to register the requests for books for readings held at the institution as well as the names of readers, in order to avoid damage or loss of the collection, producing daily records with title of books and the name of those who consulted. The work of these librarians resulted in 14 "Códices de Consulta Pública", between 1833 and 1856, currently found in the Seção de Manuscritos of that library. This dissertation turns to all the books of Belas Letras requested; highlight the novels; to identify titles and authors, and check the most requested and analyze them. A partir da constatação da existência de poucos trabalhos acadêmicos a respeito da fotonovela, este trabalho propõe-se a investigar o tema sob a perspectiva teórica da História Cultural, com o objetivo de reconstruir uma parte da história desse impresso e produzir uma determinada memória da leitura de fotonovelas, tendo como foco o leitor e a leitora e suas lembranças pessoais das práticas de leitura que caracterizavam a apropriação da fotonovela / Abstract: In the second half of 1970, the magazines that published photonovels in Brazil were the second group in number of issues and distribution, among all the kinds of magazines circulating in the country at that time, overcome only by children cartoons, as Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. All the titles of photonovel magazines together reached, at the time, more than one million of issues printed and sold monthly. But even with such a number of readers, photonovels didn¿t deserve much attention from academic researchers. This work aims investigate this them from the theoretical perspective of Cultural History, with the purpose to build a determined memory of the photonovel reading, by interviewing its readers to learn about the reading practices associated to the appropriation of this kind of magazine / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

A análise do material levantado resultou na escrita de parte relevante da história da leitura em Mato Grosso na segunda metade do século XIX / Abstract: The Mato Grosso, since 1870, has started a cycle of big changes in politics, economics, social and cultural areas, especially due to the opening of navigation through the Paraguay River, with direct connection with the Plate Republics and the coast of Brazil. The aim of this study is to find the register of these cultural modifications, especially about the reading universe, which has happened around 1870. It has been checked, based on ¿mato ¿grossenses¿ newspapers from that period of time, news about the existence of cultural associations connected to the theater and to literature/reading, as well as information about commercialization of books, at bookstores, and the action of Brazilian and foreigner publisher houses from Rio de Janeiro in Mato Grosso. Several texts about literary theory and criticism, especially Taunay¿s two books, Inocência and Histórias brasileiras, have been found. The analysis of this material resulted in the presentation of part of reading history in Mato Grosso, of the second part of the XIX century / Doutorado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Towards an integrative theory of reading

Van Wyk, Jerome Alexander 06 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on meaning construction as it occurs in the reading act. It explores and challenges the view that the reader usually uses language to construct meaning in a referential way. This study envisages that the reader who engages in a literal reading of the text may encount~r serious epistemological and ontological problems which ensue from such a narrow reading of the text. In the context of the dynamics of meaning construction, this study subsequently problematizes the notion of language vis-avis the notion of subjectivity and representation. It challenges the taken for granted assumption that meaning is pre-ordained and which has to be extracted by a sovereign and authoritative reading subject. The question of precision and correctness of grasping textual content is addressed by exploring those views which seek to go beyond Cartesian representationalism. This study therefore critically explores an alternative reading theory by examining the pioneering dialogical views of earlier theorists to include, ultimately, those subversive attempts of radical theorists. The latter group clearly seeks to subvert and even displace the dialogical reading practices of their predecessors. This study ultimately proposes the notion of a differential reading discourse. Such an integrative theory postulates an alternative theory of reading which in fact provides a more expansive, yet inclusive, framework of reading. This would entail a form of reading which would combat the mere consumption of meanings and acquiescence into ideology-building. It would be a reading framework that is more in keeping with our socio-political reality in South Africa, in which people can enjoy a far more critical and comprehensive view of themselves and of the society in which they operate. / Information Science / D.Litt. et Phil.
