A Determination of Recreation Activities of Greatest Interest to Members of Senior Centers in Texas

The purpose of this study was to determine what recreational activities were of greatest interest and appeal to members of nine senior centers in Texas and according to their age and sex. The nine senior centers were randomly selected from the forty-two centers in Texas. A minimum of twenty-five members at the selected centers were asked to respond to a questionnaire concerning their recreational activity interest. A total of two hundred seventy-four respondents completed the questionnaire, of which seventy-nine were males and one hundred ninety-five were females. The questionnaire consisted of nine recreational activity categories. These categories were designed to cover a wide range of recreational interest. Table games were the activities indicated by the respondents (88 per cent) to be of greatest interest. The activity that was indicated to be of least interest was dancing (47 per cent). Activities that included social contact had the greatest interest to the respondents. A recommendation was made that senior centers should stress those activities of a social group nature. The centers should also provide more outdoor life activities.

Addressing Alcohol and Marijuana use Disparities among Latino Adolescents

In the early 1990s, a series of seminal research studies were published on substance use disorders among Latino adolescent males in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Expanding upon these studies, the aims of the present dissertation project were to (1) Determine whether the following adolescents’ and parents’ characteristics/cultural values are associated with current (past 30 days) or lifetime (ever) alcohol or marijuana use among Latino adolescents: sex, age, country of birth, GPA, family’s socio-economic status, living with both parents, mother’s highest level of education, father’s highest level of education, Familism Support, Familism Obligations, Familism Referents, Respect, Religion, Traditional Gender Roles, Independence and Self-Reliance; (2) Assess if recreational activities (sports participation, after-school activities and volunteering) moderate the association between Latino adolescents’ friends’ age, sex, and ethnicity and Latino adolescents’ current alcohol or marijuana use and; (3) Assess if recreational activities moderate the association between Latino adolescents’ perceptions of their friends’ alcohol or marijuana use and Latino adolescents’ current alcohol or marijuana use. This cross-sectional dissertation study used survey data from 193 Latino adolescent males and females (15.7 ± 1.6 years old; 55.4% females, 44.6% males) in Miami-Dade County collected in 2016-2017. Analyses included t-tests, chi-square tests and logistic regressions. Being born in the U.S. increased the risk of current alcohol use. Identifying more strongly with the cultural value religion decreased risk of current alcohol use and current marijuana use. Participants who reported having no close friends who use alcohol were less likely to currently (within past 30 days) use alcohol themselves when compared to participants who reported having at least one close friend who uses alcohol. The interaction between participation in sports activities and reporting having friends who use alcohol on outcome currently using alcohol was significant. Participants who reported having no close friends who use marijuana were less likely to currently use marijuana themselves. Findings from this study suggest that factors contributing to substance use among Latino adolescents throughout the United States may be different than those which play a role among the unique Latino adolescent population in Miami-Dade County. This study further validated what has been shown in the general U.S. population: adolescents who perceive their friends to be using alcohol or marijuana are more likely to use alcohol or marijuana, respectively, themselves. Further research is suggested to determine the role of recreational activities in alcohol and marijuana use among Latino adolescents.

Esta dissertação tem por objetivo falar sobre a utilização do lúdico no processo de ensino-aprendizado da criança em relação à Bíblia. Diante da atualidade, onde os valores materiais muitas vezes se sobrepõem aos espirituais, é necessário que a criança, para que cresça de forma plena, harmoniosa e pautada em valores éticos e nas palavras de Deus, tenha o conhecimento e o contato íntimo com os ensinamentos bíblicos, sendo estes de forma prazerosa e relacional com o seu dia- a-dia, e é por isto que muitos educadores, inclusive os religiosos, utilizam a ludicidade como ferramenta facilitadora deste aprendizado. Conforme a própria Bíblia, as crianças são o futuro da geração vindoura (SALMO 78,1-8) e precisam de um preparo religioso e espiritual não somente para transmitir os ensinamentos divinos de geração a geração, mas também para preparar-se para a vida, sendo no futuro um bom cidadão e pessoa de Deus, graças a sua preparação enquanto pequenos, através da base familiar atrelada a instituições que valorizam a educação religiosa (igreja e escola). O ensino da Bíblia, atrelado às novas ferramentas metodológicas de ensino, no caso, a utilização do lúdico com o propósito de facilitar o aprendizado e o conhecimento sobre Deus e a sua palavra contida na Bíblia, permitem que as crianças sejam agentes em crescimento não só de corpo, mas de mente e espírito, transformadores e em transformação, cristãos que caminham neste mundo de forma consciente. / This thesis aims to discuss the use of play in the teaching-learning of children in relation to the Bible. Given the present, where the material values often outweigh the spiritual it is necessary for the child to grow fully, harmonious and based on ethical values and in the words of God, have knowledge of and intimate contact with biblical teachings, which are so pleasant and relationship with their day-to-day, and this is why many educators, including the religious use playfulness as facilitator of this learning tool. As the Bible itself, children are the future of "generation to come" (Psalm 78.1-8) and require a religious and spiritual preparation not only to transmit the divine teachings from generation to generation, but also to prepare for life, and in the future a good citizen and person of God, thanks to their preparation as small, family-based linked through institutions that value the education of religion (church and school). The teaching of the Bible, coupled with new methodological tools of education, in this case, the use of play in order to facilitate learning and knowledge about God and his word in the Bible, allow children to be agents not only growing body but the mind and spirit, transformers and transformation, Christians who walk this world consciously.

The research aimed to examine possible contributions of recreational activities in teaching fundamentals of sports futsal (driving the ball, field, passing, kicking, marking and rules). For its development, methodological procedures were used qualitative, with application of interviews that included the participation of 25 subjects, students from the sixth year of elementary school in the morning, a private university in the city of Assis-SP. The results indicated that the accession of students with respect to the proposed activities occurred satisfactorily. The recreational activities were circumstances favorable to participation and interaction, learning technical fundamentals of soccer. Data analysis showed that the use of recreational activities in physical education classes provide teaching situations that stimulated the participation, interaction and student learning. / Esta dissertação é resultado de pesquisa desenvolvida no Programa de Mestrado em Educação, linha de pesquisa 2 Formação e Prática Pedagógica do Profissional Docente, da Universidade do Oeste Paulista. A pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar possíveis contribuições de atividades lúdicas no ensino de fundamentos esportivos de futsal (condução da bola, domínio, passes, chute, marcação e regras). Para o seu desenvolvimento, foram utilizados procedimentos metodológicos de caráter qualitativo, com aplicação de entrevistas que contaram com a participação de 25 sujeitos, alunos do sexto ano do ensino fundamental, do período matutino, de uma instituição privada de ensino do município de Assis-SP. Os resultados indicaram que a adesão dos alunos com relação às atividades propostas ocorreu de maneira satisfatória. As atividades lúdicas apresentaram contextos favoráveis à participação e à interação, com aprendizagem de fundamentos técnicos de futsal. A análise dos dados permitiu concluir que a utilização de atividades lúdicas nas aulas de Educação Física proporciona situações pedagógicas que despertaram a participação, a interação e o aprendizado dos alunos.

Proyecto de intervención en un entorno familiar en la ciudad de Chachapoyas-Perú 2020

Intervención médica temprana; programas gente sana; salud pública; estilo de vida saludable; dieta saludable; actividades recreativas. / El proyecto de intervención se realizó en la ciudad de Chachapoyas en la región Amazonas durante el periodo de aislamiento social mayo-junio 2020. De acuerdo al análisis de los indicadores de salud, se puede inferir que el sistema de salud de la provincia es deficiente ya que no cuenta con suficiente personal médico ni recursos. Esto afectaría directamente el estado de salud de la población en el contexto actual debido a la pandemia del virus (SARS-CoV 2). La importancia de este proyecto de intervención es que ha permitido que los integrantes del entorno familiar puedan establecer medidas de promoción y prevención de salud a través de la implementación de un estilo de vida saludable. Se identificaron los problemas principales del entorno familiar a través del análisis de la situación de la salud (ASIS), análisis de involucrados y diagnóstico participativo comunitario (DPC) para luego poder realizar la priorización de problemas e identificar las causas y consecuencias empleando el árbol de problemas y plantear proponer soluciones con el árbol de objetivos. Se planteó como objetivo principal "Mejorar las prácticas saludables manejo de estrés y alimentación saludable en el entorno familiar, en la ciudad de Chachapoyas, durante periodo 2020-1.” Se diseñó, elaboro, supervisó y monitoreó actividades enfocadas en la promoción de la salud. Los resultados encontrados en este proyecto son muy satisfactorios ya que se cumplieron las actividades de elaboración de material, ejecución y monitoreo de actividades. Cabe resaltar que se obtuvo resultados favorables en los indicadores de evaluación, la cobertura y eficacia de todas las actividades al 100%. Se respetó los tiempos estimados de duración media, e inclusive en algunas actividades se obtuvo mayor rendimiento. / The intervention project was carried out in the city of Chachapoyas, in the Amazon region during the period of social isolation, from May to June 2020. According to the analysis of health indicators, it can be inferred that the province's health system is highly deficient. It does not have enough medical personnel nor resources having directly affected the health status of the population, especially in the current context of pandemic (SARS-CoV 2). The relevance of this intervention project is that it has allowed members of families to establish health promotion and prevention measures through the implementation of a healthy lifestyle. The main problems of the family environment were identified through the analysis of the health situation (ASIS), analysis of stakeholders, and participatory community diagnosis (DPC) to prioritize problems and identify the causes and consequences using the tree of problems and suggesting solutions with the objective tree. The main objective was to "Improve healthy stress management and healthy eating practices in the family environment, in the city of Chachapoyas, during the period 2020-1. Activities focused on health promotion were designed, developed, supervised, and monitored. The results found in this project were eminently satisfactory since the activities of material preparation, execution, and monitoring of these were accomplished. It should be noted that favorable results were obtained in the evaluation indicators, the coverage, and the effectiveness of all activities at 100%.
