Approaching Autism: A Qualitative Review of Maternal and Familial Adaptation Among Families of Children with Autism

Williamson, Stephanie A. 10 July 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to serve as an exploration of family experiences in relation to a child's autism diagnosis. Specifically, it focuses on family adaptation as explained by McCubbin, et al.'s Double ABCX Model (1983). Given that mothers play a crucial role in the family system and are often the primary caregivers for children with disabilities, maternal adaptation is also investigated. This study employs qualitative methods, including in-depth personal and group interviews. Mothers shared their perceptions and experiences surrounding children's autism diagnoses, including initial recognition of atypical behavior and development, the formal diagnosis process, and subsequent transitions within the family system. Maternal reports of personal and family adaptation revealed notable similarities between the theoretical framework of family adaptation and actual family processes. Families of children with autism experienced multiple stressors, and through the mediating influence of coping strategies, they discovered useful resources, redefined their circumstances, and progressed toward bonadaptation. Mothers followed similar patterns of adaptation personally, though some elements of maternal adaptation were predictably different from those of other family members, given the responsibilities of a parental role. Findings of this study yield insights into social and cultural influences and related adaptations among families of children with autism.

The practice of constructing hypnotic realities

Korkie, Juan 06 1900 (has links)
This dissertation presents a constructivist discussion of the experiences of the author in doing hypnosis. It explores the practice of hypnosis as a progression of behavioral changes by the hypnotis in facilitating the initiation, expansion and coherence of the hypnotic domain. These changes include punctuating and redefining everyday experiences and environmental events as hypnotic, and engaging participants in discussions based on the hypnotic logic. Hypnosis is defined as social and cognitive domain that is specified in language, and maintained by the embodied descriptions of participants. It is described how the hypnotic system evolves in terms of complexity, distinctness and functional integrity, and how this reflects the structurally determined fit between its members. In this system the hypnotist facilitates the development of the hypnotic description as a viable domain of existence that is experienced as real and all-inclusive. In conclusion some constructivist ideas for research, treatment and training are presented before constructivist thinking is used to contextualize the dissertation itself. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

New data on hemihedrite from Arizona

Lafuente, B., Downs, R. T., Origlieri, M. J., Domanik, K. J., Gibbs, R. B., Rumsey, M. S. 01 August 2017 (has links)
Hemihedrite from the Florence Lead-Silver mine in Pinal County, Arizona, USA was first described and assigned the ideal chemical formula Pb10Zn(CrO4)(6)(SiO4)(2)F-2, based upon a variety of chemical and crystal-structure analyses. The primary methods used to determine the fluorine content for hemihedrite were colorimetry, which resulted in values of F that were too high and inconsistent with the structural data, and infrared (IR) spectroscopic analysis that failed to detect OH or H2O. Our reinvestigation using electron microprobe analysis of the type material, and additional samples from the type locality, the Rat Tail claim, Arizona, and Nevada, reveals the absence of fluorine, while the presence of OH is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. These findings suggest that the colorimetric determination of fluorine in the original description of hemihedrite probably misidentified F due to the interferences from PO4 and SO4, both found in our chemical analyses. As a consequence of these results, the study presented here proposes a redefinition of the chemical composition of hemihedrite to the ideal chemical formula Pb10Zn(CrO4)(6)(SiO4)(2)(OH)(2). Hemihedrite is isotypic with iranite with substitution of Zn for Cu, and raygrantite with substitution of Cr for S. Structural data from a sample from the Rat Tail claim, Arizona, indicate that hemihedrite is triclinic in space group P (1) over bar, a = 9.4891(7), b = 11.4242(8), c = 10.8155(7) angstrom, alpha = 120.368(2)degrees, ss = 92.017(3)degrees, gamma = 55.857(2)degrees, V = 784.88(9) angstrom(3), Z = 1, consistent with previous investigations. The structure was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data to R-1 = 0.022 for 5705 unique observed reflections, and the ideal chemical formula Pb10Zn(CrO4)(6)(SiO4)(2)(OH)(2) was assumed during the refinement. Electron microprobe analyses of this sample yielded the empirical chemical formula Pb-10.05(Zn0.91Mg0.02)(Sigma) (= 0.93) (Cr5.98S0.01P0.01)(Sigma = 6.00) Si1.97O34 H-2.16 based on 34 O atoms and six (Cr + S + P) per unit cell.

Specifically, it was intended to create critical-collaborative contexts in the training of teachers to rethink reading as a tool in the teaching and learning of different subjects and to develop teaching practices in working with reading and writing. This study is supported by the theoretical and methodological discussions of Vygotsky (1930, 1934), Leontiev (1977), Engeström (2001, 2008, 2009, 2011) on the Social-Historical-Cultural Activity Theory (TASHC), its components, principles and related concepts such as mediation, ZPD and agency; and the contributions of Magalhães (2009, 2010, 2011, 2014) and Liberali (2009, 2011, 2013), on the methodology and language studies. This theoretical framework grounded the activities for providing the understanding and transformation of practices with reading, based on the core issues of the school community where the school is located. The chosen methodology was the Critical Research Collaboration (PCCol), as discussed by Magalhães (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014), in which the creations of collaborative-critical relationships between participants are central and the argument organizes knowledge production as a tool-and-result of the investigation. Thus, this study is inserted in the field of Applied Linguistics, as it understands the language as central to the creation of critical reflection contexts that make transformations to be possible. The procedures used for data collection and production were: initial semi-structured interviews, video recordings of teachers classes at the beginning and ending of the training process; collective reflection sessions; and testimonials from reflective perceptions. The produced data were analyzed in their enunciation, discursive and linguistic aspects by analyzing the following categories: thematic content; argumentative articulators; types of questions; various linguistic mechanisms, based on studies from Brookfield & Preskill (2005), Liberali (2013), Ninin (2013). The results reveal that the relations that were established between participants allowed teachers resignification about reading practices and student/teacher roles, and the transformation of their ways of teaching.

This thesis has as object the process of redefinition of the disgnostic category infection/illness "Toxoplasmosis". Arguments by definition : Felipe Calderón’s war on drugs and the power to persuade

Gutiérrez Bayardi, José Oswaldo 12 1900 (has links)
Rhetorical studies have shown the significance of presidential rhetoric and the president’s power to define public issues and policies through discourse. This research addresses how former Mexican president Felipe Calderón defined the fight against drugs that characterized his administration—and the later process of changing his definition. It argues that through the definitional practices of association, dissociation and condensation symbols, Calderón advanced a particular definition of the drug problem in Mexico. Relying on the analysis of presidential public speeches and TV spots, I 1) identify Calderon’s key rhetorical practices of definition; 2) discuss the implications of those practices and the political definitions they sustain; and 3) address the limits politicians face when attempting to change a definition they initially advanced. In conclusion, I discuss how the set of metaphors and definitional practices advanced by Calderón opened up a rhetorical space where human rights could be dismissed and violence encouraged.
