Národní a regionální identita maďarských středoškoláků na Slovensku / Sense of National and Regional Identity of Hungarian High School Students in SlovakiaOrosz, Örs January 2010 (has links)

O propósito da Geografia e a relação entre os enfoques sistemático e regional na obra de Richard Hartshorne / The purpose of Geography and the relationship between systematic and regional approaches in the work of Richard HartshorneCoscioni, Fernando José 01 April 2015 (has links)
Dentre essas contribuições, as obras The Nature of Geography (1939) e Perspective on The Nature of Geography (1959) estão entre as mais importantes peças da extensa produção intelectual do autor. / The research consists in an effort to display, analysis and interpretation of some theoretical and methodological issues concerning the nature of geographical science in the works of American geographer Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992). Percursos da Geografia Regional no curso de Geografia da Universidade de São Paulo, 1934-2014 / Paths of the Regional Geography in the Geography course at the University of São Paulo, 1934 2014Camargo, Léa dos Santos 20 April 2017 (has links)
Regional Geography, since its early days, is one of Geographys foundations, being considered for years the link between Physical Geography and Human Geography. Thus, knowing part of its trajectory in the history of Brazils Geography is essential. In order to know part of this history, the case study of Universidade de São Paulo (University of São Paulo/USP) has been elected, since this institution is a national and international reference and also represents the beginning of the process for institutionalizing Geography courses in Brazil. The initial point for this studys timeframe was set to 1934, when the Geography course started at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences, a former sub-section of Geography and History within the Faculty of Sciences and Letters. This timeframe ended in 2014, when the authors research began. Therefore, the primary purpose of this Masters Dissertation is to analyze how the regional debate fell under the Universidade de São Paulos Geography course, from 1934, considering its evolution in time, until 2014. This analysis is based on the curricula of all subjects taught in the Geography course since 1934, as well as on interviews with USPs Geography professors pertaining to Regional Geography. Among the conclusions we come to, we rely on the notions of \"selective tradition\", by Michael Apple (2008), and paradigm, by Thomas Kuhn (2013).

The construction of Nunavut : the impact of the Nunavut Project on Inuit identity, governance, and societyLégaré, André 24 June 2010
This thesis examines the impact of the Nunavut Project on Inuit identity, governance, and society. This is illustrated through three manuscripts, where I demonstrate the effects that the establishment of Nunavut has had on the Inuit of the Canadian Central and Eastern Arctic. The first manuscript (Chapter 2) presents a critical literature review of scholarly works on Nunavut. It also proposes a theoretical model based on boundaries and symbols to help comprehend the impact of Nunavut on the changing Inuit collective identity. The model shows that political elites and leaders in Nunavut are promoting the idea of a civic/regional form of collective identity for the Inuit pulling them away from a more cultural/traditional form of sub-regional groups of collective identities. The establishment of Nunavut also has had an effect on Inuit governance through the creation of the government of Nunavut and through the establishment of the Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., the organization representing the interests of the Inuit beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and managing the implementation of the Agreement. In my second manuscript (Chapter 3), I examine the mode of operation and the activities of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. I demonstrate that the Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. is based on a Euro-Canadian corporate model foreign to a traditional Inuit model of governance. Today, the Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. is the most important political player in Nunavut. The government of Nunavut regularly consults with the Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. before taking any decision that may impact the Inuit beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. The Nunavut Project seems to not only have changed the Inuit modes of identity and governance; it has also had some effects on Inuit socio-economic conditions in the Canadian Central and Eastern Arctic. My third manuscript (Chapter 4) recounts the events that led to the creation of Nunavut (1999); but more importantly it argues that although Nunavut has reinforced the sense of pride and collective regional identity of Inuit, Nunavuts political institutions have not helped to improve the socio-economic conditions that plague Inuit society. I note, however, that Nunavut has provided Inuit with all the necessary jurisdictional powers to help improve their socio-economic conditions. I remain optimistic that in time, with additional financial contribution from the Canadian government, the Nunavut experiment may prove to be a success in alleviating some of the Inuit socio-economic challenges. Results from this thesis have demonstrated that the Nunavut Project has had an impact on Inuit identity, governance, and society.

The geography of health in the Durban Metropolitan Area.Moodley, Vadivelu. January 2002 (has links)
In presenting a Geography of Health of the Durban Metropolitan Area, the researcher has
chosen a conceptual framework within which to sharply challenge the definition of health
in a perfunctory/ functionalist way. Thus, the Geography of Health is, at the outset,
locationally positioned in a socio-economic and environmental context of society. This
argument is developed through a multi-conceptual approach that leads the thesis into
building a framework with the central arching principles of biomedicine, social and
humanistic philosophy in three randomly selected informal settlement contexts. The
specific focus of this approach is on the growing poverty and homelessness, the
inadequate health delivery system and the relationship between disease, physical, social
and residential environments and structural inequalities. Thus, this study is embedded in
numerous related contexts, the most important of which is the spatial! geographical and
the social context in which health and health care is seen in relation to the nature of
society and everyday life.
To some extent this research endeavour is concerned with health and health care issues
amongst specific categories of people within marginalized communities rather than some
homogenous, non-existent category called "poor people". The key questions raised in the
study relate thus to several variables that impact informal dwellers with the specific
objective of determining socio-economic profiles, housing and environmental
circumstances; the location and nature of health services; health status of people; the
ways in which people conceptualise and prioritise health and the need for and possibility
of community involvement in health and health care. In dealing with the above issues, a
multi-faceted methodological approach allowed for the generation of 155 tabulations
from the quantitative empirical data to be triangulated with the qualitative data produced
through focus group interviews and also with the secondary data obtained.
The most significant finding emerging from the study was the fact that the relationship
between health and abject poverty is bi-directional. Respondents identified numerous
factors that affected their health, the most important of which was poverty in respect of
poor dwellings, lack of basic services, access to certain health services and the prevalence
of disease. It is hardly surprising that a biomedical perspective largely prefaced the
respondent's understanding of health. This can be attributed to locational factors but more
specifically to the overriding socialising influence of biomedicine in South African
society. In the focus group interviews with informal dwellers, the ranking exercises
demonstrated that high health risks emerge from multiple and complex factors related to
personal, economic, social, environmental and political factors.
It is the contention of this thesis that health status improvement and the reduction of
health risks of disadvantaged individuals and communities needs a multi-pronged
approach with multiple solutions drawing on resources from international, national and
local agencies and organisations. Finally, the study concludes by presenting an extensive
pool of more concrete systematic and holistic interventions that would not only improve
the quality of public health care, but also redefine the Geography of Health in South
Africa. These, it is argued are seldom attainable in the short term as it is a continuous
process underpinned by priorities, possibilities and planning. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Durban-Westville, 2002.
