Effect of relative humidity on chemical off-gassing in residences

Nnadili, Miriam Nchekwubechukwn 20 July 2011 (has links)
Relative humidity (RH) is an important parameter associated with occupant comfort in buildings. However, the effects of RH on indoor source off-gassing and interactions between air pollutants and indoor materials are poorly understood. For this study, air samples were collected in residential buildings to characterize “background” concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air. The interior space was then humidified for several hours prior to collection of another air sample to characterize the effects of increased RH on VOC concentrations. Samples were analyzed by GC/FID with abundance “binning” by elution time. Some samples were also analyzed using GC/MS to identify specific VOCs. Results indicate that increasing RH is associated with increases in VOC concentrations in residential indoor air. Many of the chemicals that show enhanced off-gassing are associated with architectural coating, moth repellents, and cleaning agents. The results of this study are novel and may have implications with respect to health effects associated with damp buildings and increased respiratory effects of children during sleep in bedrooms with elevated RH. / text

Social justice and participatory parity: Students’ experiences of university residence life at a historically disadvantaged institution in South Africa

Khan, Faeza January 2019 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The shortage of appropriate student housing in South Africa has been under the spotlight for the past few years. This has been made explicit by the Report on the Ministerial committee for the review of the provision of student housing at South African universities, revealing shocking realities regarding the State of student residences and deplorable conditions under which many students are forced to live. The inequalities in higher education as a result of the legacy of apartheid reflect glaring gaps in resources between Historically Advantaged Institutions (HAIs) and Historically Disadvantaged Institutions (HDIs). The inequity present within higher education impacts on student learning, as HAIs have more resources than HDIs, giving students attending these institutions a different exposure to opportunities. Having a safe, conducive space that facilitates learning is key to ensuring that students are able to learn properly. This research study uses the work of Nancy Fraser to understand how her notion of social justice and the ability to participate as equals (participatory parity) relates to residence life at a HDI in South Africa. Fraser contends that economic, cultural and political dimensions influence participatory parity and either enable or impede the achievement of social justice. The research study considers what suitable institutional arrangements need to be put in place to facilitate more equitable participation for students to enable them to flourish at university. This study is located at the student residences of the University of the Western Cape (UWC). A participatory action research (PAR) design was used, with the study conducted in two phases. The first phase targeted 40 students across UWC residences and used Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) techniques, including the ‘River of Life’ and ‘Community Mapping’. The second phase, involving the same 40 students, comprised a Photovoice process and individual interviews. Nancy Fraser’s participatory parity framework and the dimensions was used as a lens to make sense of the data. The findings of this study revealed several constraints and enablements which affected student learning, namely economic, cultural and political dimensions. The economic dimension revealed constraints relating to poorly resourced facilities, insufficient and ineffective services and problematic technology. Students reported how maldistribution of resources affected them when the lack of those resources prevented them from participating as equals in relation to their peers. The cultural dimension indicated whose status at residences held esteem and whose did not, and consequently what perceived attributes are valued and devalued at residences. Differently abled students, students struggling with poverty, students living with mental health issues, LGBTIQ issues, issues of gender, as well as foreign national students, found themselves being devalued, meaning that they were misrecognised because of their status. The political dimension was used to examine whether students felt that they had a voice in decision making and whether they felt that their needs and opinions were represented. The study also examined whether students were misframed. Misframing occurs when students are excluded from the frame of justice and determines whether they count and have a valid claim to justice. Foreign national students reported experiencing misframing at residences since, in some respects, they did not qualify as claimants for rights. The study highlights how Fraser’s dimensions are mutually intertwined and reciprocally influence and reinforce one another but that none is reducible to another. Referring to each of the dimensions, the study examines affirmative and transformative strategies for remedying injustices, focusing on existing strategies as well as possible strategies which could bring about participatory parity for students. Finally, the study presents a list of recommendations which the university could consider to improve student learning at residences.

Barbosa, Luciana Antunes. January 2007 (has links)
Abstract: The intention of this research is to understand the process of production and consumption of urbane space in Limeira-SP, a medium city, by condos or "castle residences enclaves" slip by research detach the condo like object of study of it appearance (condo by horizontals plans / skyscraper) until the modalities more recents of verticals "castle residences enclaves" (lot houses and hayloft). Abbey Hotel of Jumièges

Chen, Yuheng January 2021 (has links)
The project is about time and hierarchy, it’s a time vortex and a privileged paradise. The project is based on the ruin of abbey Jumièges, Normandy, France. The abbey has kept being destroyed and rebuilt during the past millennium and the architectural style is always changing through the time. Hierarchy was created within this privileged paradise. The hotel has swallowed the entire ruin and all the history, strategies, like mixing & misusing of programs and collisions with history are applied to it. I’m always interested in the introversion of architecture, a desire of being narcissism and vulnerable and the meaning of hierarchy. This project can be read as a terminal of privilege, and model of aggressive arrogant but reasonable attitude towards the history. It makes me contemplating the relations between negativism and hedonism and society.

Green-Housing

Grometto, Matteo January 2018 (has links)
My thesis project investigates the potential behind the integration of agricultural practices and living spaces. Combining advanced urban farming methods embedded in a residential context allows for the symbiosis of a typically urban lifestyle with highly efficient food production. The use ol building materials fully derived from renewable sources aims to apply concepts of circular economy in order to find an effective solution to the currently unsustainable building industry, still oriented towards traditional materials.

Schütz, Antonia 13 February 2008 (has links)
The aim of this study is to examine the formation and development of the castle complexes and nobility residences in the Uckermark from the late 12th to the end of the 15th century. Archaeological finds indicate that especially at the beginning of the medieval eastward expansion they were erected on Slavic strongholds. During the 13th and the early 14th century a lot of new castles and mansions were built. Especially the fortresses in the frontier districts and at important passes were being extended during the 14th and 15th century. In the inland regions the process of desertion led to the abandonment of many of the nobility residences. They began to fall into disrepair and were partially replaced by modern age domain and palace complexes. The main subjects of this study are the medieval buildings in form of ruins, integrated in later buildings and as archaeological site, respectively. This is the first ever complete regional inventory of the medieval castles and nobility residences of the Uckermark. It is mainly based on archaeological and architectural data, and made complete with historical and geographical facts. Almost 250 towns and villages were traced where the existence of a medieval castle or a residence is verified or presumed. Nowadays, only few of the former residences and fortresses can clearly be identified as such on the basis of the remains of above ground buildings and fortifications or by surface features like stone walls, earthworks or moats. Most of them are completely buried under earth, or replaced by manor houses and palace complexes of a later period. Surveying the present state of castle-studies in Brandenburg, the castles and nobility residences where compared with regard to their extent, morphology and ground-plan, internal building chronology and changing of their historical functions. Moreover, the connection with older Slavic strongholds and the continuity from medieval strongholds to modern age castle complexes or manor houses are investigated.

But it was only in 1988 with the creation of the Single Health System (SUS) which has as guiding principles to universality, comprehensiveness, and fairness, that creates lwas and programs for all areas of public health. Subsequently the SUS creates, organizes and regulates programs of deinstitutionalization, as: De volta para casa (Back at home), Programa de Reestruturação dos Hospitais Psiquiátricos (Restructuring Program of Psychiatric Hospitals) and Serviço Residencial Terapêutico (Therapeutic Residential Service (SRT)). The present work focuses on one of these services created by the SUS, the Home-based Therapeutic Service (SRT); by comprehending that this is an essential device in consolidating the process of deinstitutionalization of the treatment of people with mental disorders. The creation of this device was done with the objective of replacing the leitos moradias (ward beds) (long-term care facilities) in psychiatric hospitals and subsequently begin to accommodate users of Centers for Psychosocial Care (CAPS) that in some way were unable to live with their families. Also specifically within the SRTs, the study focused on the caregivers, on the understanding that these professionals are present in the various day-to-day situations in the home, and deal directly with people who have been in the context of exclusion and chronification of asylums. Therefore, their work is essential to the process of deinstitutionalization. The present study aimed to get to know the Psychiatric Reform and the process of deinstitutionalization in the Municipality of Jataí while investigating the RT device. For both, we attempted to get to know the caregivers of the Therapeutic Residential Services and their work. It was researched the three SRTs that created in 2006, in the municipality of Jataí. It is a study of a case, of descriptive character, and exploratory. Participate in the study, the caregivers of three Therapeutic Residences of the municipality, in additional to the psychologist responsible for the team. Semi-structured interviews and participant observation have been used, the data were submitted to Phenomenological Interpretative Analysis (AFI). From the analysis and interpretation of the transcribed interviews was built a theme class of Living in homes experience . In it were grouped three strands of discussion that are interlinked and intertwined, being them: work experiences, experiences with the locals and the experiences with the support network. The main final considerations relate to the need of instrumentalization, empowerment, listening, and creating of spaces for supervision to support the work of caregivers.
