Quantifying landscape anthropisation patterns: concepts, methods and limits / Quantification de la structure spatiale de l'anthropisation des paysages: concepts, méthodes et limitesVranken, Isabelle 24 February 2015 (has links)
Since human beings began to use and shape the land, their influence on their<p>environment has kept on growing so that little or no ecosystem in the world is now<p>considered as untouched. This induces pressures on ecosystem health and land scarcity.<p>Africa is of particular concern because it still presents broad undisturbed zones and<p>key ecosystem services, despite being submitted to increasing anthropogenic pressures.<p>Landscape ecology appears suitable for the study of such phenomena, thanks to its spacebased<p>integrative nature and geographical level of focus. It studies the impact of spatial<p>pattern transformation — especially heterogeneity and its components — on ecological<p>processes and provides powerful analytical tools of landscape anthropisation.<p>The main objective of this thesis is to organise the concepts and methods, from<p>landscape ecology and related disciplines, into a consistent logic, to pinpoint missing<p>analytical frameworks for response-oriented anthropisation assessment, and to apply them<p>to African cases to explore the spatial patterns of anthropisation. In order to address<p>landscape anthropisation, we assemble diverse disciplines into a logical network (DPSIR).<p>The new theoretical framework is tested on Lubumbashi (DRC). In order to address<p>spatial patterns, we first evaluate the thermodynamic connection of the term entropy in<p>landscape ecology: spatial heterogeneity, unpredictability and scale influence. Then, based<p>on 20 landscapes, we highlight the complex relationship between spatial heterogeneity<p>and landscape anthropisation. We finally use the modelled relationships to test the<p>anthropogenic origin of the spatial pattern of a land cover class in Lubumbashi.<p>The main results of this research show that several concepts are used to describe different<p>aspects of anthropisation and that its quantification strongly depends on the reference states.<p>Data formats can be combined into a new assessment method ensuring more precision<p>and comparability, but a good field knowledge is required. As for heterogeneity, the<p>existing definitions of landscape entropy follow the logic of thermodynamics or information<p>theory, that are not compatible. Only unpredictability could be properly interpreted in<p>thermodynamic terms if energy transfer measurements were performed at the appropriate<p>level. The anthropogenic effects on heterogeneity completely diverge depending on the<p>amount of already anthropised surface, on the land cover type (natural or anthropogenic),<p>and on the heterogeneity components.<p>The aforementioned findings could be adapted to include functional aspects and<p>better address the relationship between spatial pattern and ecological processes. Such<p>integration would help designing response actions that can recommend human activities<p>and spatial patterns that could optimise the use of land to ensure ecological functioning<p>while supporting human development. / <p>L’influence croissante de l’homme sur son environnement affecte désormais le monde<p>entier, ce qui induit des pressions sur la santé des écosystèmes et raréfie les ressources<p>en terres. Localized Ecological and Educational Effects of Environmental Service-Learning in Portland, OregonBraun, Steven Matthew 05 June 2015 (has links)
Environmental service-learning is an intentional educational experience(s) wherein learners engage in meaningful activities designed to serve the environment. Environmental service-learning activities vary according to their learning and service goals and include ecomanagement, persuasion, legal action, economic action and political action. The purpose of this mixed methods research was to explore the ecological and educational impacts of grades 6-12 environmental education, with special attention to environmental service-learning throughout Portland, Oregon.
Ecological impacts considered restoration and conservation outcomes of several environmental service-learning programs including plant communities, soils, litter removal and trail maintenance. Educational outcomes considered aspects of environmental literacy including locus of control, environmental sensitivity, indicated environmentally responsible behaviors, investigating environmental issues and knowledge of physical systems. The relative influence of some significant life experiences on youths' response to environmental education, including environmental service-learning, was also considered. Telephone surveys were used to gather data from 22 Portland metropolitan area environmental education programs. Data included 2014 annual biophysical impacts (e.g., area of invasive species removed, pounds of litter removed) and information on programming (e.g., length of program, % time outside). Eleven programs administered a 33-question environmental literacy assessment to participants of their programs (n=393). The assessment included the New Environmental Paradigm, the Inclusion of Nature in Self, questions from Environmental Identity Scale and self-constructed questions. One 8th grade program was identified for a detailed case study. In this 8th grade programs, slight variations in educational activities occurred among three treatment groups which varied the amount of time youth spent engaged in ecomanagement. Youth from the three treatment groups and a control group were administered the environmental literacy assessment at the beginning and end of the program. Qualitative data for the youth in the treatment groups were gathered to further consider how environmental literacy was impacted by participation in the program.
Stronger associational correlations to environmental literacy occurred for the percentage of time an environmental education program spent outdoors rather than the percentage of time an environmental education program engaged in environmental service-learning (e.g., "With other people, I can work to make a positive impact on the environment." rho: .276 vs. "I have the skills necessary to make a positive impact on the environment" rho: .176). Random forests indicated that environmental education program features and some significant life experiences could predict collapsed environmental literacy variables (locus of control, environmental sensitivity and environmentally responsible behaviors). 22.4% of the variance in a collapsed environmental sensitivity variable was explained by nine predictor variables; those variables with the strongest influence were youth response to "Before this program, how frequently did you spend time in the outdoors," age and the presence of a positive adult role model who cares for the environment. Youth participating in environmental education programs showed higher environmental literacy than control groups (e.g., "I feel an important part of my life would be missing if I couldn't get out and enjoy nature from time to time" U: 3642.500, p: 0.025). Youth with significant formative life experiences (e.g., those indicating previous environmental education or a positive adult role model that cares for the environment) responded better (higher environmental literacy) to environmental education than those youth without ("I pay special attention to things outdoors" chi 10.633, p: 0.031).
This research provides insight on the efficacy of environmental service-learning. Environmental service-learning positively affected environmental literacy, but outdoor environmental education was more effective in terms of environmental literacy. Results corroborate the body of literature regarding significant life experiences. Further, results suggest that significant life experiences are a critical development milestone necessary for youth to respond to environmental education on a developmental trajectory to empowered environmentally literate citizens.

Factors Limiting Native Species Establishment On Former Agricultural LandsWeiler-Lazarz, Annalisa M 01 January 2012 (has links)
Restoration of abandoned, nonnative species-dominated agricultural lands provides opportunities for conserving declining shrubland and grassland ecosystems. Land-use legacies, such as elevated soil fertility and pH from agricultural amendments, often persist for years and can favor nonnative species at the expense of native species. Understanding the factors that limit native species establishment on abandoned agricultural lands can provide important insights for restoration and conservation of native species on human-modified lands. I conducted two field experiments on abandoned agricultural lands: a former pasture on Martha’s Vineyard, MA and a former citrus grove at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (MINWR) in Titusville, FL. In these experiments I tested how soil chemical properties affect native and nonnative species abundance and how different methods of removing nonnative, invasive species affect native and nonnative species abundance. In the first experiment, specifically I tested how restoration treatments affect competition between existing nonnative agricultural plant species and native plant species that are targets for sandplain grassland restoration on Martha’s Vineyard, MA. At MINWR, I examined how lowering soil fertility with carbon additions and lowering soil pH by applying sulfur affects nonnative species richness and cover (in two former citrus groves that were historically scrub/ scrubby flatwoods. Overall, I found that biotic factors, such as competition with nonnative species, play a stronger role in limiting native species establishment than soil chemical properties. Likewise, control of nonnative, invasive species is most effective with mechanical treatments to physically reduce cover, rather than altering soil chemical properties

Connecting to Nature, Community, and Self: A Conservation Corps Approach to Re-engaging At-Risk Youth in Science EducationLinden, Sara Jo 09 June 2016 (has links)
The social and environmental challenges of the coming decades will require that individuals possess environmental literacy: the understanding of natural systems combined with a sense of care for the earth, and the confidence and competency to act on its behalf. At the same time, disengaged youth need education environments that foster belonging and promote affective outcomes. The youth conservation corps model provides a natural context for engaging academically at-risk youth in environmental science education, while fostering connection to nature and student self-efficacy in ways that are experiential, relevant, and relationship-based. The focus of this study was a conservation corps program that integrates habitat restoration fieldwork and environmental science curriculum. The participants of this study were eight high school seniors who participated in the program for credit toward their high school diplomas. Data were collected through both quantitative and qualitative measures. Students completed a pre-test to assess their understanding and application of conceptual knowledge in ecosystem relationships and biodiversity. Upon completion of a six-week curriculum, they completed a post-test assessing knowledge in the same areas, two retrospective pre-post surveys measuring connection to nature and self-efficacy, and a post-evaluation measuring affective outcomes. Individual interviews were conducted in order to provide further insights and to identify elements of the program that contributed to positive outcomes. Results showed statistically significant increases in all outcome areas as well as positive student evaluation of affective outcomes. The outdoor and experiential components of the program were found to contribute most significantly to the positive outcomes.

Development, evaluation, and application of spatio-temporal wading bird foraging models to guide everglades restorationUnknown Date (has links)
In south Florida, the Greater Everglades ecosystem supports sixteen species of
wading birds. Wading birds serve as important indicator species because they are highly
mobile, demonstrate flexible habitat selection, and respond quickly to changes in habitat
quality. Models that establish habitat relationships from distribution patterns of wading
birds can be used to predict changes in habitat quality that may result from restoration
and climate change. I developed spatio-temporal species distribution models for the
Great Egret, White Ibis, and Wood Stork over a decadal gradient of environmental
conditions to identify factors that link habitat availability to habitat use (i.e., habitat
selection), habitat use to species abundance, and species abundance (over multiple scales)
to nesting effort and success. Hydrological variables (depth, recession rate, days since
drydown, reversal, and hydroperiod) over multiple temporal scales and with existing
links to wading bird responses were used as proxies for landscape processes that influence prey availability (i.e., resources). In temporal foraging conditions (TFC)
models, species demonstrated conditional preferences for resources based on resource
levels at differing temporal scales. Wading bird abundance was highest when prey
production from optimal periods of wetland inundation was concentrated in shallow
depths. Similar responses were observed in spatial foraging conditions (SFC) models
predicting spatial occurrence over time, accounting for spatial autocorrelation. The TFC
index represents conditions within suitable depths that change daily and reflects patch
quality, whereas the SFC index spatially represents suitability of all cells and reflects
daily landscape patch abundance. I linked these indices to responses at the nest initiation
and nest provisioning breeding phases from 1993-2013. The timing of increases and
overall magnitude of resource pulses predicted by the TFC in March and April were
strongly linked to breeding responses by all species. Great Egret nesting effort and
success were higher with increases in conspecific attraction (i.e., clustering). Wood Stork
nesting effort was closely related to timing of concurrently high levels of patch quality
(regional scale) and abundance (400-m scale), indicating the importance of a multi-scaled
approach. The models helped identify positive and negative changes to multi-annual

Os estudos de relação entre a paisagem e a água doce vêm sendo aprofundados pela comunidade científica e pelos propositores de políticas públicas, principalmente, para atender às demandas sobre as maneiras que este sistema ambiental pode ser alterado e na identificação das implicações políticas e ecológicas destas mudanças. Quanto mais se torna intenso e diversificado o uso dos corpos hídricos e da paisagem em bacias hidrográficas maior é a necessidade de se definir formas de planejamento, gerenciamento e gestão ecológica desses ecossistemas. O completo entendimento do funcionamento e dos processos ecológicos que ocorrem em uma bacia hidrográfica exige conhecimento simultâneo de seus sistemas aquáticos e terrestres, da biodiversidade, da fisiografia, da geologia e de sua conservação, temporal e espacial. Este entendimento e conhecimento da área de interesse são vitais para proposições de instrumentos ambientais legais, como Unidades de Conservação (UCs). É muito importante que a fundamentação destas propostas tenha como eixo principal o funcionamento dos ecossistemas e das paisagens, de forma a garantir uma maior conectividade e integração entre água (doce, salobra e salgada) e terra, e seus múltiplos usos. A presente tese foi desenvolvida com base neste contexto, apresentando e aplicando metodologias integradoras, seja na ecologia de paisagem (EP), seja na relação entre os ambientes dulcícola e terrestre. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi o desenvolvimento de processos para planejamento ambiental em BHs, através do diagnóstico, compreensão e análise do funcionamento e dinâmica da paisagem e de ecossistemas de rios e córregos, apoiados no uso de geotecnologias. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, a BHGM ocupa uma área de 1260,36 km e 204,69 km de perímetro. É uma bacia com forma mais alongada que circular (KC = 1,6144e IC =0,4747 km/km) que indica uma menor susceptibilidade a enchentes em condições normais de precipitação exceto em eventos de intensidades anômalas. O mapeamento base (2007) realizado indicou que a bacia possuía 34,86% de uso antrópico e 64,04 % de remanescente florestal. Os dados de fitofisionomia potencial indicaram predominância da classe Florestas Ombrófila Densa Submontana (40%) e de Terras Baixas (39%). Foram estabelecidas para bacia 269 unidades de paisagem (integração da geomorfologia, geologia, fitofisionomia e uso da terra e cobertura vegetal (2007)) que junto com os dados de métrica de paisagem constituíram a proposta integrativa da tese para ecologia de paisagem. Em relação à qualidade ambiental foram adotados o índice de avaliação visual (IAV), o índice multimétrico físico-químico bacteriológico e o índice biótico estendido (IBE). A comparação entre estes índices demonstrou a confirmação entre os seus resultados para a maioria dos pontos amostrados nas áreas de referência e de pelo menos dois índices para os pontos intermediários e impactados. Foram propostos também dois cenários para a bacia: um considerando as condicionantes e medidas compensatórias vinculadas à licença prévia do complexo petroquímico do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (COMPERJ); e outro, sem considerar estas condições. O primeiro indicou a realização da restauração ecológica, seguindo as diretrizes do mapa síntese, integrada para restauração da paisagem. / Studies about relation between landscape and freshwater have been enhanced by the scientific community as by the proponents of public policies, in order to meet the demands generated from the discussion on the ways this environmental system can be modified and the identification of political and ecological implications of these changes. The stronger and more diversified uses of watercourses and landscape in their watersheds, the greater the need to define ways of planning, supervision and ecological management of these ecosystems. The complete understanding of the functioning and ecological processes that occur in a watershed requires simultaneous knowledge of their aquatic and terrestrial systems, biodiversity, physiography, geology as temporal and spatial preservation. Knowledge and understanding on the area of interest is vital for proposals of environmental legal instruments, such as Protected Areas (UCs1). It is preeminent that the rationale of these proposals has as its main axis ecosystems and landscapes functioning in order to ensure greater integration and connectivity between water (freshwater, brackish and saltwater) and land in its multiple uses. This thesis has been developed based on this context, proposing and implementing integrative methodologies, whether in landscape ecology (EP) or the interrelation between the freshwater and terrestrial environments. The study main objective was the development of processes for environmental planning in BHs by diagnosing, understanding and analyzing the landscape and ecosystems of rivers and streams functioning and dynamics, supported by geotechnologies. According to gathered results, BHGM occupies an area of 1260.36 km with 204.69 km of perimeter. It is a more oblong than circular basin (KC = 1.6144 and IC = 0.4747 km / km) indicating a lower susceptibility to flooding during normal rainfall events, except in anomalous intensities. The base mapping conducted indicated that the basin had 34.86% of anthropic use and 64.04% of remaining forest. The data indicated a predominance of the potential vegetation type of dense umbrageous sub-montane rain forest class (40%) and lowlands class (39%). There has been established 269 units for basin landscape which represents the data integration with geomorphology, geology, vegetation type and land use, and vegetation co ver (base year) which joined to the landscape metrics data formed the integrative thesis proposal for ecology landscape. This has been used as a planning tool in the proposition of ecological corridors and areas for potential sampling water quality in the basin.
Regarding the environmental quality index were adopted visual rate index (IAV), the physical-chemical bacteriological multimetric index and biotic extended index (IBE). The comparison among indexes have confirmed results for most points showed in the reference areas, and at least for two indexes on intermediate and impacted points. There have also been proposed two scenarios for the basin, one considering conditions and compensatory measures concerned to the prior license for the petrochemical complex of the State of Rio de Janeiro (COMPERJ) and other without any consideration of the above mentioned. The first indicated the completion of restoration projects following the guidelines of the synthesis map for integrated landscape restoration.

Um fator importante para o sucesso de algumas espécies vegetais invasoras é a plasticidade fenotípica, dandolhes grande capacidade de aclimatação em diversas condições ambientais. O conhecimento dos fatores ambientais e das características da planta que contribuem para o sucesso das espécies invasoras é de grande importância para predizer a habilidade de invasão e para esforços de manejo. Neste contexto, o objetivo principal deste estudo foi conhecer algumas características fisiológicas e ecológicas de Clausena excavata Burm. f., uma espécie de árvore exótica reconhecida como invasora em algumas regiões no mundo, no intuito de compreender o sucesso da espécie como invasora e contribuir com informações relevantes para possíveis tentativas de controle. Primeiramente, foram avaliados os efeitos da luz e da temperatura em sua germinação (condição controlada) e o efeito da luz na emergência de suas plântulas (condição natural, a pleno sol e sob a copa das árvores). As sementes germinaram tanto na presença como na ausência de luz, nas temperaturas de 20 a 35°C, sem diferença entre a porcentagem de sementes germinadas nas diferentes temperaturas. Sementes mantidas a 20°C, em ambas as condições de luz, germinaram mais lentamente em relação às demais temperaturas. Independente da temperatura, na presença de luz as sementes apresentaram uma germinação muito mais sincronizada do que aquelas mantidas no escuro. Tais resultados mostraram que as sementes de C. excavata são fotoblásticas neutra. Em campo, a emergência... / The invasive species are recognized one of more important and difficult factors that prejudice the conservation of native ecosystems. In the restoration of degraded environment, these species can to affect profoundly the trajectory of recovery by native species and, therefore, the ecosystems composition. An important factor to the success of invasive species is their phenotypic plasticity, which gives them a great ability to adjust in several environmental conditions. The knowledge of environmental factors and plant characteristics that contribute to the success of invasive species is very important to predict the invasion capacity and to manage efforts. In this context, the main objective of this study was to know some physiological and ecological characteristics of Clausena excavata Burm. f., a nonnative tree species recognized as invasive somewhere of the world, with intention to understand the success of this species as invasive and to contribute with relevant informations for a possible management. At first, were evaluated the effects of light and temperature on their seeds germination (controlled condition) and the effect of light on seedling emergence (natural condition, at full sun and shade). The seeds germinated in presence and absence of light, from 20 to 35°C, without difference among the germination percentage at different temperatures. Seeds maintained in 20°C, at both light conditions, germinated slowly than others temperatures. Independent of temperature, in light the seeds showed a germination more synchronized than the seeds kept in darkness. Those results showed that C. excavata have neuter photoblasics seeds. On the field, the emergence occurred at both environments, but at full sun all seeds produced a seedling. Seed biology and rehabilitation in the arid zone : a study in the Shark Bay world heritage area, Western AustraliaCommander, Lucy January 2009 (has links)
Research into seed biology and restoration ecology of areas disturbed by mining is crucial to their revegetation. Shark Bay Salt, a solar salt facility in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area in Western Australia has several areas of disturbance as a result of 'soil borrowing'. Soil from these areas termed 'borrow pits' was used to create infrastructure such as the roads and embankments surrounding the evaporation ponds. Many of the pits contain little to no vegetation after >10 years since disturbance ceased, hence research into their restoration is now essential. A vegetation survey at the site established the key species in the undisturbed vegetation, and investigated the vegetation in borrow pits subject to natural migration and topsoil replacement. The vegetation communities in the borrow pits were vastly different to those in the undisturbed vegetation, highlighting the need for research into revegetation. An investigation into the use of 'borrowed' topsoil on a small scale showed that seedling recruitment from 'borrowed' topsoil was generally similar in the donor site (natural vegetation) and the borrow pits. Due to the absence of topsoil for further revegetation, it was necessary to understand seed germination and dormancy characteristics to establish seed pre-treatments prior to seed broadcasting and seedling (greenstock) planting. An investigation into seed germination and dormancy characteristics of 18 common species revealed that most species germinated equally well at 26/13oC and 33/18oC, however seven species had improved performance at 26/13oC. Untreated seeds of seven species exhibited high germination. Seeds of two species had low imbibition, which increased with hot-water treatment, and hence require scarification for germination. Germination of seeds of three species substantially increased with gibberellic acid (GA3), smoke water (SW) and karrikinolide (KAR1, a butenolide isolated from smoke). Seeds of the remaining six species had low germination regardless of treatment. As a result, species were classified as likely to be non-dormant (44%), physiologically dormant (44%) or physically dormant (11%). Physiological dormancy of three species was at least partly alleviated by dry afterripening, whereby moisture content of seeds was adjusted to 13% or 50% equilibrium relative humidity and seeds were stored at 30oC or 45oC for several months. All iv after-ripening conditions increased germination percentage and rate of two species with one only germinating when treated with GA3 or KAR1. The germination of the third species was dependent on after-ripening temperature and seed moisture content.

Stream habitat classification and restoration in the Blue Mountians of northeast OregonEbersole, Joseph Lamar 01 June 1994 (has links)
The restoration of rivers and streams should be based on a
strong conceptual framework. Streams are developing systems. As
such, streams exhibit temporal behaviors that change with changing
stream environments. Underlying the dynamic development of streams is
potential capacity. Streams express this capacity as an array of
habitats over time and across the landscape. Human land uses in the
western United States have rapidly altered aquatic habitats as well as
the processes that shape habitat. As a result, the diversity of native
fishes and their habitats has been suppressed. Restoration is
fundamentally about allowing stream systems to re-express their
capacities. Four steps are provided to guide stream restoration
activities. Key tasks include: identification of the historic
patterns of habitat development; protection of the developmental
diversity that remains; local application of specific knowledge about
suppressive factors; classification of sensitive, critical or refugium
habitats; release of anthropogenic suppression; and monitoring of
biotic response to habitat change.
Applying these concepts, I describe potential habitat refugia
for aquatic organisms in the Joseph Creek basin in the Blue Mountains
of northeast Oregon. Five valley segment classes, differing in valley
corridor landforms, are described. Of these, low-gradient wide
alluvial valleys have been most altered by human land use. Riparian
vegetation has been extensively removed or altered in alluvial
valleys. Currently, stream habitats are structurally depauperate, and
warm to temperatures well above thermal tolerances of native
salmonids. Potential refugia for native coldwater fishes in these
valleys include patches of complex habitat within stream reaches.
Reaches fenced to exclude domestic livestock exhibit narrower
channels, more pools, and higher frequencies of stable vegetated banks
than nearby unfenced reaches. During summer low flow periods, cold
groundwater seeping into and accumulating in stream channels forms
"cold pools". Cold pools provide potential seasonal refuge for coldwater
fish at microhabitat scales. Cold pools are associated with
channel complexity, and are more frequent in reaches with vigorous
riparian vegetation. Seven classes of cold pools are described. Cold
pool classes differ in minimum temperature, maximum depth and volume.
Distributions of cold pool classes between valley segment classes
suggest that valley geomorphology in addition to local channel form
may influence development of certain cold pool types.
Although refugia at the microhabitat to reach scales are
important, the context within which remnant or refugium habitats and
associated relict populations are maintained may ultimately determine
the persistence of those species and habitats. In managed landscapes,
protection and restoration of habitats at many scales may be necessary
if we are to best insure the persistence of native species. / Graduation date: 1995

Global environmental changes, especially land-use changes, have profound effects on both ecosystem functioning and biodiversity, having already altered many ecosystem services. These losses emphasize the need to preserve what remains; however when conservation programs are not sufficient, restoring areas that have been destroyed or disturbed can improve conservation efforts and mitigate damages. This work focuses on campos rupestres, Neotropical grasslands found at altitudes, which are part of the Cerrado (Brazilian savannas). They host a great biodiversity with a high level of endemism and, like other mountain ecosystems, provide valuable ecosystem services, such as water purification and recreational services. They have been and still are being impacted by human activities, such as civil engineering construction, quarrying or mining. The first objective of this thesis was to describe the reference ecosystem in order to aim for a clear restoration target and to monitor progress and success. We show that campos rupestres are composed of at least two distinct plant communities (i.e. sandy and stony grasslands), each having a specific composition and structure, hosting a great biodiversity. Several phenological patterns occur among the herbaceous communities: the majority of species flowers and fruits appear during the rainy season but other patterns can be observed. During our 2-year survey, some dominant species belonging to Poaceae, among others, were not observed reproducing, which implies limited chances to disperse on degraded areas. Campo rupestre vegetation is not resilient following a strong disturbance: several years after the disturbance, almost no native species are encountered on the degraded areas, soils are completely altered and seed bank recomposes only with non-target ruderal species. According to the filter model, a local community is a subset of the regional species pool determined by a set of dispersal, abiotic and biotic filters. Acting on the different filters to influence the plant community was the core of our restoration interventions. We then applied three in-situ restoration protocols (hay transfer, species translocation and turf translocation) to restore both kinds of grassland. Hay transfer does not allow the restoration of campo rupestre vegetation because of soil alteration and mainly because of poor seed quality. Indeed, germination studies show that, while some Xyridaceae and Velloziaceae have a high germinability, some dominant Poaceae, Cyperaceae or Asteraceae species have embryoless, unviable or dormant seeds, which makes seeding less efficient. There is no evidence that fire-related cues enhance germination in campos rupestres. Species translocation is successful for only one species, Paspalum erianthum; for the others, root damages probably impede survival. Finally, turf translocation is the most successful method, since numerous species are re-introduced on degraded areas. However due to the low resilience of pristine campos rupestres where turfs are taken from, turf translocation can only be considered in the case of habitat rescue, in circumstances when complete habitat destruction is otherwise unavoidable. Face to the difficulty to restore these peculiar grasslands, the protection and the conservation of campos rupestres must be made a high priority
