Wikis in teaching and learning a foreign language: A case study of wiki usage in the course Academic reading and writing for teacher candidates / Wikis in teaching and learning a foreign language: A case study of wiki usage in the course Academic reading and writing for teacher candidates

Kedziora, Beata January 2012 (has links)
An increasing number of universities are providing the current generation of students, the socalled ‘digital natives’ (Prensky, 2001) - with more flexible and innovative language learning environments through the use of free Web 2.0 tools, such as wikis, blogs, social networking, Second Life and podcasting. However, still relatively little is known about wikis in the context of teaching English for Academic Purposes. My project aims to fill this research gap. I applied a case study strategy, where three groups of students attending a course Academic reading and writing for teacher candidates were examined. This paper demonstrates how the wiki software was employed in the course to encourage teacher candidates to proof-read and edit their own and others’ texts in order to be more accurate in academic writing. The present case study applied several research methods, including analysis of the texts written by students on the wiki and chat-room comments, an interview with the teacher of examined groups and a student questionnaire. The analysis of peer revisions was carefully conducted with a particular focus on: the variations in the way that students corrected each others’ texts, types of revised language issues, and the extent to which the teacher candidates were correcting accurately. My findings show that the students paid close attention to sentence structure (e.g. clauses, punctuation), fixing sentence problems (e.g. parallelism, choppy and stringy sentences), inflection and academic style. It is noteworthy that most of these languages issues were discussed in class. Considerably less attention was given by students to questions like paragraph structure and content. The accuracy of students’ revisions varied depending on the type of corrected language issue. The general impression of employing the wiki in this course was favourable. Many of the teacher candidates admitted that they would like to utilize the wiki tool in their future teaching courses.

Proměna a vývoj feministických hnutí v Koreji po roce 1980 / Redefinition, Tasks and Development of the Feminist Movements in Korea of 1980s

Boukalová, Tereza January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is an analysis of historical and political factors that participated in the foundation and development of feminist movements in Korea after 1980. The first chapter deals with the working conditions of women employed in textile factories and subsequently describes the protest actions of these women in the 1970s. Protests and collective actions grew into political activism, which created the first women's movements in the 1980s. The second chapter is devoted to their character and development. The following section deals with another important factor that has influenced the formation of the identity of feminist movements in Korea, women active in politics. Their struggle to change Family law in the 1990s united women's movements and strongly signed on their future direction.

Assembling a Work of Art: An Annotated History of Fluxfilm No. 1

Hölling, Hanna 08 May 2023 (has links)
“What is Zen for Film?”, I was asked on the occasion of a preparatory meeting for Revisions, an exhibition to feature Zen for Film (1962–64), Nam June Paik’s “blank” film projection. Despite the many discussions that preceded the meeting, when it came to the question of what the main—and the only—artwork of this exhibition was, we felt as if we’d been left in the dark. Is Zen for Film an idea, a concept—or rather, an event, a performance, or a process? In its original form, Revisions: Zen for Film combined a research project, pedagogy, an exhibition, and an exhibition catalogue. Revised again in the following pages, Revisions is an exercise in slow looking. It questions the ambition of constructing the work with a fixed identity, a product that moves seamlessly from the studio to the world of dissemination, distribution, and display. Instead, Zen for Film will appear once again as an assemblage of people, things, and events, a vibrant materiality destined for a changeable future.

The employee – the company’s most important asset? : A quantitative studie about the correlation between human capital and profitability in the auditing- and accounting business

Johansson, Frida, Fjällman, Sanna January 2021 (has links)
Bakgrund: Ett företags värde ligger i dess tillgångar. / Background: A company’s values lies in its assets. The assets include a company’s intangible assets, which lacks physical existence but is despite that an important asset. The human capital is a part of the intangible assets. Human capital is not accounted for in the financial reports, which gives a fragmented picture of the financial wellbeing when the employees are not seen as an investment, but rather as an expense. Purpose: The purpose was to explain the correlation between human capital and profitability. The relationship was investigated by studying three companies in the auditing- and accounting business. The aim was to find a correlation between human capital and profitability in order to emphasize the importance of human capital in knowledge-based companies. The project further intended in the long term to contribute to the continued research of the accounting of human capital in financial terms. Method: In order to attain the objective of this study, a quantitative method was used. The empirical material was collected through a survey and an analysis of financial statements. Conclusions: The results of the project showed a negative correlation between human capital and profitability, which means that company's profitability decreases if the company has a high level of human capital. The health of the employees can be seen as a dimension of the human capital that has a major impact on a company's profitability. Employers and recruiters can therefore create benefits for its company if they hire individuals with good physical and mental health. It is important for employers to continuously review their human capital. Employers should strive to understand the whole human capital in order to raise the level of each individual employee. The results of the project showed that a more even distribution of human capital generates better profitability. In summary, the project shows indications of a correlation between the human capital and profitability in the auditing- and accounting business. It also shows that it’s hard to understand the true value of a company simply by analyzing the financial statements, since a large part of the value lies in the intangible assets that are not part of the financial statements.

Rausch, Markus 12 February 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The mobility of people and goods, especially in urban areas, is of significant importance for national economies. However, recurrent congestion in urban road networks, caused by increased traffic demand, considerably restrains mobility on a daily basis. Another significant source of congestion are traffic incidents which even might lead to gridlock situations. Congestion raises high costs for traffic, economy and environment. Which countermeasures should be applied for an effective management of urban congestion? How can appropriate countermeasures be realistically evaluated? Based on these questions, this thesis is devoted to the development of an event-oriented route choice model for urban road traffic and a self-organized incident management strategy as an effective countermeasure for urban congestion. The first contribution of this thesis is an event-oriented route choice model for urban road networks. It is based on discrete choice theory and models decision-making processes of individual motorists before and during their journey. A key aspect of the proposed model is the motorist's ability to observe local traffic conditions. These observations are then included in the decision process. In this way, it can be modeled that motorists respond to unforeseen events by route revisions. This allows a realistic simulation of the route choice behavior of motorists in naturally eventful urban road networks. Furthermore, the event-oriented route choice model is flexibly formulated. It can be used for the evaluation of countermeasures for incident-related congestion and, moreover, allows a wide range of applications. The second contribution of this thesis is a self-organized concept of an incident management strategy in urban road networks as a countermeasure for urban congestion. It combines two locally acting principles on the basis of traffic lights in an urban road network. The inflow of vehicles into a road segment is regulated with restricted or skipped green times as soon as an allocated queuing capacity is depleted. Otherwise, blockages would result on the intersection. At the same time, yet free alternative directions are served with regular or even extended green times and, thus, might become more attractive to the driver than the original congested direction. The application of these local principles is realized in a completely self-organized manner, thereby scaling directly with the extent of congestion in the urban road network. Simulation studies in two networks with different complexity have proven the feasibility of the self-organized incident management. Compared to an ordinary network, the extents of additional vehicles due to investigated incidents were significantly reduced.
