Environmental risk assessment for the electricity sector : a case of Swaziland electricity company

Van Zuydam, Constance Sthembile 06 1900 (has links)
The provision of reliable, safe, affordable and accessible power supply is one of the most important cornerstones for economic development, particularly for third world countries. Notwithstanding all known benefits of power supply, there are environmental risks associated with electricity generation, transmission and usage that need to be identified, assessed and managed. These risks range from minor to major risks such as serious bodily harm and fatalities as well as environmental degradation. In order to minimise and control the operational risks, it is key for the sector to ensure that the risks are identified and assessed using appropriate tools and systems to ensure sustainability and safe work environments. This study explored, improved and designed a tool for environmental risk assessment within Swaziland Electricity Company, (SEC) based on clause 4.3.1 of ISO 14001 (2004), Environmental Management System and Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series, OHSAS 18001 (2007), Occupational Health and Safety System. The previous risk assessment and evaluation tool used in the company ignored existing risk control practices employed and thus did not truly quantify identified risks. The methodology presented in this study focused on the identification of hazards/aspects and risks associated with processes in electricity generation, transmission and distribution. Risks were evaluated and all possible measures to control the identified risks were suggested. The top three significant hazards identified include; exposure to live wires, road hazards and the use of uncertified/ defective/wrong equipment and/or machinery whilst the significant impacts were: soil pollution, natural resource degradation/ depletion, loss of flora and fauna and social impacts. The distribution department was observed to have the most environmental risks when compared to the other departments. The developed tool and data could be used as baseline information by other sectors wishing to implement environment and safety systems. It will also continually improve the safety and environmental performance of SEC. / Environmental Science / D. Phil. (Environmental Science)

The development of a criminological intervention model for the Rosslyn industrial environment in Tshwane, Gauteng, South Africa

Pretorius, William Lyon 02 1900 (has links)
The problem investigated in this research is the ongoing crime threat and the extreme risks which impact negatively on the sustainability of the Rosslyn Industry - the industrial hub of Tshwane in the Gauteng Provence of South Africa. Businesses in Rosslyn are desperate for a solution that will mitigate these crime threats and risks, and ensure the future sustainability of this important industrial community. An intervention model is urgently required to prevent this type of crime, not only as a short term solution but as a sustainable long term intervention. This research study initiated the collaboration required for the successful implementation of a Crime Prevention Intervention Model (CPIM) in the Rosslyn industrial environment. The intended crime prevention model has been designed in such a way that it addresses the entire environment of crime that prevails in the Rosslyn area involving both the offender and the victim. This design is rooted in the ontology of Environmental Criminology and more specific on the applied epistemology of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). Participants in this project are representatives who are responsible for all security functions in both big businesses and small enterprises. And with their dedicated assistance the research findings disclosed the current crime status of the Rosslyn environment regarding the threat, risk, security vulnerabilities, controls and needs: • Crime and its causal factors, in Rosslyn, are rife and no noteworthy action has been implemented to mitigate these threats. • Collaboration between Rosslyn role players (neighbours, local government and law enforcement) is for all purposes non-existent. • And to complicate matters even more, knowledge of how to effectively mitigate crime is limited and handicapped by the re-active physical security methods currently being used. • The implication of these findings is that the status quo will eventually render business in Rosslyn unsustainable. Thus a CPIM in Rosslyn is inevitable. What was crucial to this research and to the CTPED design is the detailed sourcing of accurate data addressing the experiences and the needs the respondents identified in the current Rosslyn crime situation concerning; status, the threat, risk, security, vulnerabilities and controls. In order to achieve this level of data sourcing and assimilation, the essential features of the research method were based on a mixed approach where quantitative and qualitative methods were implemented in parallel. The diverse fields, sources and respondent mix required for a Rosslyn Industry CPIM also necessitated a MIT (Multi,-Inter,-Trans,-Disciplinary) approach. This MIT requirement is successfully facilitated through the applied criminological CPTED approach. The CPIM is based on the combined outcomes of the following three research fields: • Field-one: Environmental criminology theories are researched through an in-depth literature review to demonstrate the criminological grounding of crime prevention and to guide its application through the development of an applied CPTED SUITE. • Field-two: Supply Chain Security (SCS) are researched through an in-depth literature review to establish its criminological relevance and applications. SCS requirements are identified and built into the Field-Three research process and tested for relevance and for incorporation in the CPTED SUITE. • Field-three: Based on a mixed research process, using a custom designed Criminological Risk Analyses tool incorporating scheduled interviews and questionnaires, the crime and needs profile of the Rosslyn Industry are uncovered and analysed. The results are filtered through the CPTED SUITE to indicate the correct criminological approach for mitigating the identified problems and needs. Even though this study takes an applied crime preventative approach, the criminological-philosophical mould of crime prevention is imperative for the effective application of the CPTED. Security and crime prevention training, planning and application, without this approach will remain underdeveloped and outdated. Finally the underlying intention of this research is for this Crime Prevention Intervention Model (CPIM) to be adapted and implemented and to serve as a guide or a benchmark for security practitioners in any industrial environment that has the same crime threats and crime risk challenges. / Criminology and Security Science / D. Krizové řízení výrobní plastikářské společnosti / Risk management of the production plastic company

MALÝ, Jan January 2009 (has links)
Nowadays more and more new chemicals are used for numerous technologies and ap-plications by diverse chemical, plastic processing and other companies. Are all such companies fit to manage and solve chemical breakdowns, extraordinary events and critical or even emergency situations? Surely a very interesting question. Therefore I have decided for my study to analyse a crisis management system of a plastic processing company located in the City of Liban, region Hradec Kralove. Current status of coordination of the integrated rescue system (hereinafter referred to as the "IZS"). Classification of hazardous chemical substances. Simulating of extraordinary events using the software tool TerEx with respect to diverse chemicals operated by and within the Company. Evaluation of selected chemical substances according to hazards induced. Risk analysis, Analysis of occurrance of extraordinary events like e. g. windstorm, fire or escape of dangerous chemical substance, disconnecting of supply medium (heat, energy, power, water) and their treatment. Methods of actions at threat of bomb attack. Determination whether the IZS coordination including of the documentation elaborated are satisfactory with respect to the plastic processing company as well as with respect to successful mastering of extraordinary and emergency situations. Crisis management of business economics and economic distress.

From Diesel to Battery Power in Underground Mines : A Pilot Study of Diesel Free LHDs

Jäderblom, Niklas January 2017 (has links)
Load, haul and dump machines (LHDs) are commonly used in underground mines around the world. The machines are used to transport fragmented ore after blasting in the ore body. The main propellant used is diesel which accounts for a large part of the diesel consumed in mines today. This master thesis is a pilot study for further work to be done by LTU and Atlas Copco in a project called SIMS or Sustainable Intelligent Mining Systems, where the aim is to physically demonstrate diesel free LHDs doing productive work in mines. The objective of the thesis was to assess if the integration of battery-powered LHD machines is plausible in today’s underground mines. The aims were to map the current state of the production and to perform risk and job analysis of the new technology in the current systems. A theoretical framework was constructed with focus on safety, risk, hazards and change in work content. Social acceptance was then researched to be able to analyze how the new technology is received. Data gathering was done through interviews, observations, a focus group and reviewing documents while visiting Atlas Copco and two underground mines in Sweden. Diesel and electric-powered LHDs were studied in the mines and battery-powered LHDs were studied at Atlas Copco. The results present the current state of diesel, electric and battery-powered LHDs. How the machines are used in the visited mines and the identified risks with the work is presented along with the mapping of the battery system being developed by Atlas Copco. New risks that the battery system will bring to the work environment were identified using energy and deviation analyzes. The change in work content was discussed using the information from the visits and identifying what tasks will change, disappear and be added with the new technology. A large part of the thesis was analyzing the results with support from the theoretical framework. The analysis showed that a switch from diesel to battery-power would improve the overall health and safety inside the mines. A switch does not change the skill needed to operate the machines but can increase the qualifications for the service personnel. The main obstacles, in terms of social acceptance, with implementing the battery systems in the current state are that the need for constant battery exchange would cause problems in the production, the prejudice that the batteries would increase the consequences of a fire and the initial cost of making the switch. Recommendations for Atlas Copco going forward in the SIMS project were made. They need to emphasizing the safety of the technology to the users, developing the battery exchange so it can be done closer to the stopes and involve the operators in the projects of SIMS to help them understand the benefits it will have on them directly.

An Assessment of the Performances of Several Univariate Tests of Normality

Adefisoye, James Olusegun 24 March 2015 (has links)
The importance of checking the normality assumption in most statistical procedures especially parametric tests cannot be over emphasized as the validity of the inferences drawn from such procedures usually depend on the validity of this assumption. Numerous methods have been proposed by different authors over the years, some popular and frequently used, others, not so much. This study addresses the performance of eighteen of the available tests for different sample sizes, significance levels, and for a number of symmetric and asymmetric distributions by conducting a Monte-Carlo simulation. The results showed that considerable power is not achieved for symmetric distributions when sample size is less than one hundred and for such distributions, the kurtosis test is most powerful provided the distribution is leptokurtic or platykurtic. The Shapiro-Wilk test remains the most powerful test for asymmetric distributions. We conclude that different tests are suitable under different characteristics of alternative distributions.
