Counterculture and marginality in the contemporary novel : the sign of the end of literature?

Ourrad, Samia 14 May 2009 (has links)
The introduction of marginality and of the counterculture in the contemporary novel reveals a literature crisis at the end of the twentieth century and at the beginning of the millennium. The death of literature is often claimed as the fiction, narrative or identity crisis. There are increasing interferences between the highbrow Literature and “bad-literature”. Is this idea of End on a par with the extreme belief in the End of the World of Western and in the Death of the modernist thesis? Many contemporary novels explore extreme violence, sadism and cruelty to expose, with disappointment, a brutal and animal humanity. But are not these violence excess and overdeveloped marginality the expression of a radical disappointment or a strong writing that use acid language to refuse this new face of the world and of art? This writing, that elate journalistic critic, does it really change literature? Is it really new and subversive or is it popular literature that follows up the modernists experiments? The highbrow critic seems sceptic concerning its literarity; but the inscription in the “linguistic third-world” reveals the changes of the aims of literature. In fact, what is the function of literature in globalisation and mediacraty? Don’t these novels reveal a deep evolution of literature and a critic of the traditional artistic criterions?

Labelle, Maude 09 1900 (has links)
This Master's thesis studies the concept of hyperrealism in the context of contemporary literature. It focuses more specifically on the ways it is expressed in three novels written by Suzanne Jacob : L'Obéissance (1991), Rouge mère et fils (2001) and Fugueuses (2005). An overview of the history and theoretical aspects of pictural art is essential to understand hyperrealism for the latter is intertwined with this art form. When taking a closer look at the hyperrealistic novel, one will notice the abundance of media references (i.e. pictural art, photography, cinema, music, television, sculpture, architecture and literature). This occurrence of multiple medias and the depiction of the real through mediated representations are essential components of hyperrealistic works. Style and narrative are intimately related to these medias and art forms. The Hyperrealist novel hence will feature complex and particular narrative structures characterized by juxtaposed focalizations, narrative fragments and importance given to fine detail. Finally, the hyperrealist novel employs continuity and fragmentation. It features characters and author composing with these complex representations wich will eventually lead them to demonstrate skepticism and doubt when apprehending the real.

Vers une théorie du roman postnormâle : féminisme, réalisme et conflit sexuel chez Doris Lessing, Märta Tikkanen, Stieg Larsson et Virginie Despentes / Theorizing the postnormâle novel : feminism, realism and sexual conflict in the works of Doris Lessing, Märta Tikkanen, Stieg Larsson and Virginie Despentes

Rundgren, Heta 12 December 2016 (has links)
Situated at the intersection between comparative literature and gender studies, this dissertation theorizes what I term the postnormâle novel. It deploys readings of four contemporary European novels along with a corpus of literary and feminist theory. The novels include Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook (1962), Märta Tikkanen’s Manrape (1975), Stieg Larsson’s Millenium trilogy or The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2005-2007) and Virginie Despentes’s Apocalypse baby (2010). My analysis of these texts examines the way in which the postnormâle novel reclaims social discourses of sexual difference for a mass audience while subtly displacing realist conventions in order to inscribe women’s—or lesbians’—experience of sexual conflict into the text. A four step process is used to study the work. First, I anchor the novels to a “realist real”, and study the function of detail within the postnormâle aesthetic. Then I chart the sociogram ’feminism’ in the novels and their reception. Thirdly, I read the narrative of what I call “counter-rape”, and lastly the inscription of woman-desire and the figuration—the constitution even—of entr’elles, a feminist space. The perspective of my study is postmodern, which implies a suspension—but not a disbelief—of the twofold question of literary status and literary evaluation, in order to focus on texts in their contexts. In this process, I aim to rethink the link between the notions of the feminine and the queer in light of contemporary feminist and lesbian perspectives.

Événement et dynamique événementiale chez José Saramago et Daniele Del Giudice / The event and the dynamic of the happening in the novels of Jose Saramago and Daniele Del Giudice

Brito, Amélie 11 February 2012 (has links)
Daniele Del Giudice's novels, and the second part of Jose Saramago's novelistic work, are built around a neutral event, happening surprisingly and beyond the possibilities contained by the diegetic world. Such an event can be considered as « événemential » in the terms of Claude Romano's philosophical analysis. This thesis examines the place of such an event in the poetics of the two writers, studies its diegetic and narrative specificities as well as the characteristics of its use, and analyses its implications in giving shape to the world figured by the novels. The use of such an event is part of the search of a possible narration begun by the two writers in the early 1980's : this event disrupts the traditional novelistic pattern by drawing attention to a process of happening that is indeterminate and constantly disrupted, all the while providing a narrative dynamic that disturbs its own organisational logic. Both writers aim to expose the movement of the happening, echoing the extra-diegetic reality. The latter appears as woven from a multiplicity of unstable elements which combine to form a changing totality. The narrative shows its relational structure and its dynamic. An experience that is both tangible and visible is created, anchored in the specificities of language and narration, in a way that offers a perspective on the structuring of the sensory world. The use and role of the event in the two writer's novels reveals shared concerns and gestures towards a tendency of contemporary narrativisation : the desire to make palpable the dynamics of an indetermined, aimless and uncertain happening, while rendering in and through narrative the force of a presence.

Perron-Nadeau, Florent 08 1900 (has links)
Dany Laferrière, recently admitted to the prestigious Académie française, has produced a considerable work in the past thirty years. Two of his first novels, Comment faire l'amour avec un Nègre sans se fatiguer and Cette grenade dans la main du jeune Nègre est-elle une arme ou un fruit? are characterised by a rich and varied intertextuality. The thread of the narrative of these two novels is built by fragments. In the first text, a fictional writer is working on a novel titled Paradis du dragueur nègre. In the second novel, we find the same writer, but he travels through the United States in order to write a report on America. In both cases, we find staged writing by a fictional writer who has many similarities to Laferrière himself. The reader witnesses the construction of the story he is reading through an original « autobiographical novel ». In fact, there are many resemblances, even correspondences, between the two stories. Both Laferrière's novel themes, style and genre, are part of a « genealogy » of texts that can be grouped into literary « families ». We will then try, in the following research, to define and understand the role of theses « families » and illustrate how the appropriation of these texts allows the author to be inspired and to question these texts from the past. We will therefore study the intertextual references of these literary « families » in the first two chapters of our research and then study more specifically the construction of the figure of the writer and his literary space through these two novels. KEY WORDS : Dany Laferrière ; intertextuality ; autofiction ; contemporary novel ; Quebec literature.

Figures mythiques dans le roman contemporain francophone

Robova, Antoaneta 07 December 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is the comparative study of the resurgences of three mythical figures – Don Juan, Ulysses and Jason – in the contemporary francophone novel. “Part One : The Art of Don Juanism and the Art of the Novel: Milan Kundera’s libertinage” discusses the genesis of the Kunderian donjuanesque paradigm reviving the gestures of the baroque burlador and the romantic, modern and postmodern metamorphoses and experiences of the mythical pattern moving towards a distanced and critical posture. “Part Two: Novelistic variations on the Mythical heritage: Avatars and Adventures of Don Juan and Ulysses” focuses on the intertextual strategies involved in the development of the contemporary libertine typology in Kundera's oeuvre and in three cases of morbid Don Juanism portrayed by Pierre-Jean Remy, Denis Tillinac and Béatrix Beck in order to compare them to the techniques of reinvention of the Odyssean adventure revisited by Maurice Audebert and Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. “Part Three: Mythical travellers – Ulysses and Jason. Experiences of the return and the quest” studies the devices of demythologisation used by Milan Kundera, the entanglement of Homeric and Joycean intertexts in the Cycle of Cyrtha by Salim Bachi and the transformations of the basic syntagm of the myth of Jason in three works by Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio. The results of the analyses are systematized in order to identify the main features of the mythological writings and to relate them to the trends in the contemporary francophone novel.

Genèse in vivo : le manuscrit des "Errances Druon" de Claude Louis-Combet / Genesis in vivo : the manuscript of Claude Louis-Combet's "Errances Druon"

Cabiron, Héloïse 24 June 2015 (has links)
Claude Louis-Combet is a discreet writer who built his work away from the world. Even though he did not feel concerned by his own manuscripts at first, he accepted to entrust them to the Centre Jacques Petit in 1994. These archives are now completely digitalized and represent more than 20, 000 folios. This thesis intends to explore the folder of the Errances Druon to reconstruct the genesis of this contemporary novel by collecting the author’s words. The availability and the regular presence of Claude Louis Combet at the Faculty of French Literature in Besançon indeed allow a true interaction between the author and researchers. Therefore, this study on the fourth mythobiography of the writer was conducted in vivo, following the path of a genetic horizon imagined by Pierre-Marc de Biasi in 1993 and initiated by Irene Fenoglio in 2006 with her works on Pascal Quignard. We have thus discovered a different Claude Louis-Combet. Not the well-known serious writer, who took to literature after a violent break-up with religion, but a facetious and mischievous author, who knows how to mystify his readers and who created his own apocryphal sources, such as the famous Vie secrète de saint Druon.
