Цель работы – разработка серверной части приложения и инфраструктурных компонентов для проекта «Мониторинг IT-конференций». Методы исследования: анализ, сравнение, систематизацию и обобщение данных о существующих и разработанных инфраструктурных компонентах, апробация современных подходов при построении архитектуры инфраструктуры. В результате работы сконфигурированы две виртуальные машины для работы Kubernetes и Gitlab Runner, настроены компоненты хранения постоянных данных для PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ и S3-хранилища на базе Rook Ceph, создано приложение на базе Django для предоставления API клиентскому приложению, написана конфигурация для Gitlab CI, обеспечивающая сборку образа приложения и его развертывание в Kubernetes. Созданное приложение предоставляет функционал управления контентом для администраторов сервиса (загрузка видео в S3-хранилище, разметка с помощью системы тегов, привязывание конференций к спикерам) и HTTP API для клиентского приложения с возможностью регистрации, аутентификации через JWT-токены, иерархическому поиску по системе тегов и отдаче подписанных ссылок на S3-хранилище для просмотра видео. / The purpose of the work is to develop the server part of the application and infrastructure components for the project "Monitoring IT conferences". Research methods: analysis, comparison, systematization and generalization of data on existing and developed infrastructure components, approbation of modern approaches in building infrastructure architecture. As a result of the work, two virtual machines were configured for Kubernetes and Gitlab Runner, persistent data storage components for PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ and S3 storage based on Rook Ceph were configured, an application based on Django was created to provide an API to a client application, a configuration for Gitlab CI was written, providing building an application image and deploying it to Kubernetes. The created application provides content management functionality for service administrators (uploading videos to S3 storage, marking using a tag system, binding conferences to speakers) and an HTTP API for a client application with the ability to register, authenticate through JWT tokens, hierarchical search using the tag system, and giving back signed links to S3 storage for watching videos.

Testing Lifestyle Store Website Using JMeter in AWS and GCP

Background: As cloud computing has risen over the last decades, there are several cloud services accessible on the market, users may prefer to select those that are more flexible and efficient. Based on the preceding, we chose to research to evaluate cloud services in terms of which would be better for the user in terms ofgetting the needed data from the chosen website and utilizing JMeter for performance testing. If we continue our thesis study by assessing the performance of different sample users using JMeter as the testing tool, it is appropriate for our thesis research subject. In this case, the user interfaces of GCP and AWS are compared while doing several compute engine-related operations. Objectives: This thesis aims to test the website performance after deploying in two distinct cloud platforms.After the creation of instances in AWS, a domain in GCP and also the bucket, the website files are uploaded into the bucket. The GCP and AWS instances are connected to the lifestyle store website. The performance testing on the selected website is done on both services, and then comparison ofthe outcomes of our thesis research using the testing tool Jmeter is done. Methods: In these, we choose experimentation as our research methodology,and in this, the task is done in two cloud platforms in which the website will be deployed separately. The testing tool with performance testing is employed. JMeter is used to test a website’s performance in both possible services and then to gather our research results, and the visualization of the results are done in an aggregate graph, graphs and summary reports. The metrics are Throughput, average response time, median, percentiles and standard deviation. Results: The results are based on JMeter performance testing of a selected web-site between two cloud platforms. The results of AWS and GCP can be shown in the aggregate graph. The graph results are based on the testing tool to determine which service is best for users to obtain a response from the website for requested data in the shortest amount of time. We have considered 500 and 1000 users, and based on the results, we have compared the metrics throughput, average response time, standard deviation and percentiles. The 1000 user results are compared to know which cloud platform performs better. Conclusions: According to the results from the 1000 users, it can be concluded that AWS has a higher throughput than GCP and a less average response time.Thus, it can be said that AWS outperforms GCP in terms of performance.

Novel methods for species distribution mapping including spatial models in complex regions

Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) plays a key role in a number of biological applications: assessment of temporal trends in distribution, environmental impact assessment and spatial conservation planning. From a statistical perspective, this thesis develops two methods for increasing the accuracy and reliability of maps of density surfaces and provides a solution to the problem of how to collate multiple density maps of the same region, obtained from differing sources. From a biological perspective, these statistical methods are used to analyse two marine mammal datasets to produce accurate maps for use in spatial conservation planning and temporal trend assessment. The first new method, Complex Region Spatial Smoother [CReSS; Scott-Hayward et al., 2013], improves smoothing in areas where the real distance an animal must travel (`as the animal swims') between two points may be greater than the straight line distance between them, a problem that occurs in complex domains with coastline or islands. CReSS uses estimates of the geodesic distance between points, model averaging and local radial smoothing. Simulation is used to compare its performance with other traditional and recently-developed smoothing techniques: Thin Plate Splines (TPS, Harder and Desmarais [1972]), Geodesic Low rank TPS (GLTPS; Wang and Ranalli [2007]) and the Soap lm smoother (SOAP; Wood et al. [2008]). GLTPS cannot be used in areas with islands and SOAP can be very hard to parametrise. CReSS outperforms all of the other methods on a range of simulations, based on their fit to the underlying function as measured by mean squared error, particularly for sparse data sets. Smoothing functions need to be flexible when they are used to model density surfaces that are highly heterogeneous, in order to avoid biases due to under- or over-fitting. This issue was addressed using an adaptation of a Spatially Adaptive Local Smoothing Algorithm (SALSA, Walker et al. [2010]) in combination with the CReSS method (CReSS-SALSA2D). Unlike traditional methods, such as Generalised Additive Modelling, the adaptive knot selection approach used in SALSA2D naturally accommodates local changes in the smoothness of the density surface that is being modelled. At the time of writing, there are no other methods available to deal with this issue in topographically complex regions. Simulation results show that CReSS-SALSA2D performs better than CReSS (based on MSE scores), except at very high noise levels where there is an issue with over-fitting. There is an increasing need for a facility to combine multiple density surface maps of individual species in order to make best use of meta-databases, to maintain existing maps, and to extend their geographical coverage. This thesis develops a framework and methods for combining species distribution maps as new information becomes available. The methods use Bayes Theorem to combine density surfaces, taking account of the levels of precision associated with the different sets of estimates, and kernel smoothing to alleviate artefacts that may be created where pairs of surfaces join. The methods were used as part of an algorithm (the Dynamic Cetacean Abundance Predictor) designed for BAE Systems to aid in risk mitigation for naval exercises. Two case studies show the capabilities of CReSS and CReSS-SALSA2D when applied to real ecological data. In the first case study, CReSS was used in a Generalised Estimating Equation framework to identify a candidate Marine Protected Area for the Southern Resident Killer Whale population to the south of San Juan Island, off the Pacific coast of the United States. In the second case study, changes in the spatial and temporal distribution of harbour porpoise and minke whale in north-western European waters over a period of 17 years (1994-2010) were modelled. CReSS and CReSS-SALSA2D performed well in a large, topographically complex study area. Based on simulation results, maps produced using these methods are more accurate than if a traditional GAM-based method is used. The resulting maps identified particularly high densities of both harbour porpoise and minke whale in an area off the west coast of Scotland in 2010, that might be a candidate for inclusion into the Scottish network of Nature Conservation Marine Protected Areas.

Propagation loss in slow light photonic crystal waveguides

The field of nanophotonics is a major research topic, as it offers potential solutions to important challenges, such as the creation of low power, high bandwidth interconnects or optical sensors. Within this field, resonant structures and slow light waveguides are used to improve device performance further. Photonic crystals are of particular interest, as they allow the fabrication of a wide variety of structures, including high Q-factor cavities and slow light waveguides. The high scattering loss of photonic crystal waveguides, caused by fabrication disorder, however, has so far proven to be the limiting factor for device applications. In this thesis, I present a detailed study of propagation loss in slow light photonic crystal waveguides. I examine the dependence of propagation loss on the group index, and on disorder, in more depth than previous work by other authors. I present a detailed study of the relative importance of different components of the propagation loss, as well as a calculation method for the average device properties. A new calculation method is introduced to study different device designs and to show that photonic crystal waveguide propagation loss can be reduced by device design alone. These “loss engineered” waveguides have been used to demonstrate the lowest loss photonic crystal based delay line (35 dB/ns) with further improvements being predicted (< 20 dB/ns). Novel fabrication techniques were investigated, with the aim of reducing fabrication disorder. Initial results showed the feasibility of a silicon anneal in a nitrogen atmosphere, however poor process control led to repeatability issues. The use of a slow-fast-slow light interface allowed for the fabrication of waveguides spanning multiple writefields of the electron-beam lithography tool, overcoming the problem of stitching errors. The slow-fast-slow light interfaces were combined with loss engineering waveguide designs, to achieve an order of magnitude reduction in the propagation loss compared to a W1 waveguide, with values as low as 130 dB/cm being achieved for a group index around 60.

A phenomenological ontology of freedom : obscuration and the light

The thesis argues that for Jean-Paul Sartre and Martin Heidegger, the free will debate has been rendered intractable by a fundamental misunderstanding of the terms involved. This is exacerbated by a failure to identify and adopt an appropriate methodological approach to the problem. Both philosophers argue that this error in the free will debate is symptomatic of a broader misunderstanding of philosophical enquiry and the method it necessitates. For Heidegger, the entire history of ‘analytic/western' ontology has been fatally misconceived as a result of an effort to define the being of entities in static terms. The insistence on the question of what a being ‘is' obstructs any meaningful enquiry by conceding its existence at the outset of the investigation. Sartre's project is founded on Heidegger's argument, pushing it into a definitive claim about the nature of consciousness. He argues that as the only being for whom ‘meaning' is possible, consciousness is distanced from beings by ‘nothingness' which ensures its ontological freedom. The thesis will argue that Sartre has misconstrued Heidegger's work, making comprehension of his freedom all the more complicated. We propose that a thorough investigation of their projects will reveal an account of ontological freedom that does not suffer from the shortcomings of existentialism whilst avoiding the methodological missteps of the traditional discourse.

Confronting nightmares : responding to iconoclasm in Western museums and art galleries

It is not an everyday event for an artwork in a museum or gallery to be harmed deliberately by a member of the public. Such acts of iconoclasm do occur more regularly than many people might assume though, and when attacks take place the repercussions can be serious. This thesis examines the ways in which cultural institutions react to this phenomenon, investigating how responses could be improved to tackle it more effectively. The first chapter establishes the context to the discussion by categorising and rationalising the various motives behind iconoclastic crimes. The next chapter concentrates on historical trends of response, using the case of the suffragette iconoclasts to illuminate reactions from across society, before assessing the effects of their endurance. The third chapter broaches new ground in the field of prevention by exploring the access and education approach: a means of forestalling destructive compulsions among the public by promoting engagement with cultural institutions and works of art. The fourth chapter looks at security enhancement: the more traditional answer to iconoclastic offences. It evaluates the options open to museums from a defensive standpoint, but it also discusses the wider impact of implementation on accessibility. The final chapter presents the findings of a postal survey of 250 British museums and galleries undertaken in 2006. The purpose of the survey was to gauge the current nature and extent of the problem, and to determine how contemporary museum professionals deal with it. Although some cultural institutions respond to iconoclasm with considered, sustainable and effective tactics, others would be wise to revise their conduct. This thesis concludes that while instances of iconoclasm will never be eradicated from galleries completely, the threat could be curbed significantly if the museum sector was to make a concerted effort to study its own responses and introduce necessary changes.

Den här rapporten handlar om skapandet av en prototyp för en webbutbildningsmodul som implementerats på Inspectera Online. Fokus ligger främst på presentationsverktyget i modulen och en jämförelse med liknande verktyg som finns tillgängliga på internet. I resultatet presenteras för- och nackdelar för respektive presentationsverktyg med avseende på funktionalitet och vilka möjligheter till integration som finns.

This research, with the main focus on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, was based on data from the literature, and on questionnaire and interview surveys with the main stakeholders: authorities, drug-developers and NGOs/foundations. It revealed the following determinants, which contributed to the occurrence of drug pricing conflicts in Brazil, Thailand and South Africa: governmental constitutional commitments to supply medicines to poor people, the existence of a local pharmaceutical industry capable of producing generic versions of patented medicines and long histories of disease treatment programmes. The research documented the preferred approaches to increase global access to life-saving medicines for the next decade, which were found to be: public-private-partnerships, prevention measures, dedication of >0.5% of GNP to poor countries, and improvement of national healthcare/insurance systems. Those approaches were integrated into a conceptual framework, which could enable country-level organizations to move beyond the conflict mentality via a ¿Public-Private-Partnership for gradual Self-Sufficiency and Sustainability Model,¿ (P3S3). Within this framework, rich countries should invest >0.5% of their GNP to help to alleviate poverty in poor countries. With these funds, national governments should implement programmes to expand implementation of disease prevention measures and improve national - 4 - healthcare/insurance systems and the quality of the medicines involved. Public-private-partnerships should act as ¿steering-and-controlling¿ organizations to guide the process and to minimise corruption. Towards the development of transgenic banana bunchy top virus (BBTV)-resistant banana plants : interference with replication

Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) causes one of the most devastating diseases of banana. Transgenic virus resistance is now considered one of the most promising strategies to control BBTV. Pathogen-derived resistance (PDR) strategies have been applied successfully to generate plants that are resistant to numerous different viruses, primarily against those viruses with RNA genomes. BBTV is a circular, single-stranded (css) DNA virus of the family Nanoviridae, which is closely related to the family Geminiviridae. Although there are some successful examples of PDR against geminiviruses, PDR against the nanoviruses has not been reported. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to investigate the potential of BBTV genes to interfere with virus replication when used as transgenes for engineering banana plants resistance to BBTV. The replication initiation protein (Rep) of nanoviruses is the only viral protein essential for viral replication and represents an ideal target for PDR. Therefore, this thesis focused on the effect of wild-type or mutated Rep genes from BBTV satellite DNAs or the BBTV integral genome on the replication of BBTV in banana embryogenic cell suspensions. A new Rep-encoding satellite DNA, designated BBTV DNA-S4, was isolated from a Vietnamese BBTV isolate and characterised. When the effect of DNA-S4 on the replication of BBTV was examined, it was found that DNA-S4 enhanced the replication of BBTV. When the replicative capabilities of DNA-S4 and the previously characterised Rep-encoding BBTV satellite, DNA-S1, were compared, it was found that the amount of DNA-S4 accumulated to higher levels than DNA-S1. The interaction between BBTV and DNA-S1 was also examined. It was found that over-expression of the Rep encoded by DNA-S1 using ubi1 maize polyubiquitin promoter enhanced replication of BBTV. However, when the Rep-encoded by DNA-S1 was expressed by the native S1 promoter (in plasmid pBT1.1-S1), it suppressed the replication of BBTV. Based on this result, the use of DNA-S1 as a possible transgene to generate PDR against BBTV was investigated. The roles of the Rep-encoding and U5 genes of BBTV DNA-R, and the effects of over-expression of these two genes on BBTV replication were also investigated. Three mutants of BBTV DNA-R were constructed; plasmid pUbi-RepOnly-nos contained the ubi1 promoter driving Rep expression from DNA-R, plasmid pUbi-IntOnly-nos contained the ubi1 promoter driving expression of the DNA-R internal gene product (U5), while plasmid pUbi-R.ORF-nos contained the ubi1 promoter driving the expression of both Rep and the internal U5 gene product. The replication of BBTV was found to be significantly suppressed by pUbi-RepOnly-nos, weakly suppressed by pUbi-IntOnly-nos, but strongly enhanced by pUbi-R.ORF-nos. The effect of mutations in three conserved residues within the BBTV Rep on BBTV replication was also assessed. These mutations were all made in the regions in the ATPase motifs and resulted in changes from hydrophilic to hydrophobic residues (i.e. K187→M, D224→I and N268→L). None of these Rep mutants was able to initiate BBTV replication. However, over-expression of Reps containing the K187→M or N268→L mutations significantly suppressed the replication of BBTV. In summary, the Rep constructs that significantly suppressed replication of DNA-R and -C in banana embryogenic cell suspensions have the potential to confer resistance against BBTV by interfering with virus replication. It may be concluded that BBTV satellite DNAs are not ideal for conferring PDR because they did not suppress BBTV replication consistently. Wild-type Rep transcripts and mutated (i.e. K187→M and N248→L) Rep proteins of BBTV DNA-R, however, when over-expressed by a strong promoter, are all promising candidates for generating BBTV-resistant banana plants.
