Folie et déraison dans l'espace théâtral contemporain / Madness and Insanity in Contemporary Theatrical Space

Han, Sidonie 10 December 2012 (has links)
This research proposes to study existing interactions between scenic space and madness in contemporary theater. By studying scenography and locations where they occur, we wish to question the use of insanity, not as a theme or dimension of a character, but as a tool to question and renew theatrical space. Madness, a subject of debate whose very existence is regularly questioned, appears for certain directors and/or set designers as a way to radically question illusionist realism and as a pathway to a "theatrical reality" as perceived by Antonin Artaud. These interactions may be exploited by the site chosen for staging but also through the use of madness (hallucination, delirium, dreams) as a disruptive element of scenic space. Madness is then used to disorient the spectator : he is no longer exposed to a representation of his daily life, or a representation of the drama’s setting, or the mental state of a character, but with spaces that offer a perception outside the norms of reason. Madness no longer occurs in the creation of a fable, but in the very structure of theater. Along the lines of certain futurist or surrealist groups’ research, some contemporary staging and scenography therefore tries to do away with dominant reasoning, and view insanity as a means to question political and social order as much as theatrical order.

L'espace non figuratif dans la scène théâtrale tunisienne contemporaine : approche plastique / The non-representational space in contemporary Tunisian theater scene : approach reading

Sfar, Jinène 30 March 2015 (has links)
With avant-garde artists, the Western theatrical scene broke with figurative scenic image and the illusion of a current space that representing a certain period of time. In Tunisia, theater, an art that appeared in the early twentieth century (which coincided with the birth of contemporary art), initially resorted to figurative stage devices that represent the Tunisian daily life. But, since the sixties, the Tunisian director who had similar experience to the plastic artist, starts searching his own aesthetic way while borrowing an oriental, precolonial, and foreign heritage. The scenic images have given up its figurative representation since Ben Ayed (at the end of his artistic career) and have become a place of research and experimentation: from a narrative and figurative space to an abstract space. Indeed, the conditions of exchange and interaction between theatrical arts are reflected in contemporary Tunisian scenic image and are continuous development, in substance as well as in form.Starting from a body of contemporary performances, through the National Theatre and the Theatre of the earth, then Elteatro, and Familia Production, until the experience of the National Puppetry Arts Center and amateur theater, we can notice the presence of an interaction between the arts. We also examine a certain transcreation between the various forms of artistic expression. Another point is that Technological processes, innovative mediums, and the influence of Eastern theatrical forms, allow directors to "write" on stage and the public to read and re-imagine the world with its multiple visions

Le surtitrage : analyse d'une technique de traduction théâtrale et conception de nouveaux outils à partir d'un corpus de spectacles en Espagnol / Towards a study of a technique of theatrical translation and the elaboration of new tools from a corpus of plays in Spanish

Péran, Bruno 30 September 2011 (has links)
Globalization is no longer restricted to the economic and commercial spheres as the cultural and artistic worlds are now also affected by it. Within this context, translation plays a major role since it makes exchanges easier while maintaining the diversity of languages and cultures. In making possible the circulation of dramatic and lyrical works in their entire theatrical dimension, the practice of surtitles contributes to the elaboration of this intercultural dialogue. Hence, it came to be recognized as a specific technique of translation, half-way between theatrical translation and audiovisual translation. The practice of surtitles has been developing at a regular pace since its creation, raising thus the question of its professionalization and that of the tools required for such specific types of translation. To answer those questions, a theoretical analysis of surtitling is necessary because of its specificities concerning both the source and target texts and the very process of translation which it implies. A reflection on the theories of translation should be combined with a reflection on the theatrical field since the surtitles are, as a matter of fact, part of the scenography. No matter how much the surtitles are taking into consideration in the elaboration of the staging, their integration always has a consequence on the play they translate. Alongside this theoretical approach, this study is based on a practical experience in surtitling which has helped us to further delineate its features. This combination of theory and practice has resulted in the creation of new tools in the field of methodology and computing (practical guidelines for the users of the software Surtitéa) to ease the task of the translator and helps his professionalization.

Cenografia brasileira século XXI: diálogos possíveis entre a prática e o ensino / Scenography, XXI century: possible dialogues between the practice and teaching of scenography in Brazil,

Miriam Aby Cohen 10 April 2007 (has links)
The possible dialogues between the practice and teaching of scenography in Brazil, identified herein, are the result of the investigation and reflection about the development of the contemporary scenographer originating from the perception from my experience in theatre practice. Here the scenographer is treated as an artist, responsible for the visual identity of the theatrical event and collaborator in the process of its creation. Scenography is taken as a language within the theatrical context, taking care to not ignore scenography?s expansion into other areas, understanding that starting from its theatre origins we can carry a good part of this experience to these other related areas. The development of this research is based on the processes experienced and methodologies applied in major Brazilian academic institutions that offer bachelor degree level scenography courses. These proceedings are analysed with the objective of recognizing and appointing productive directions for the training of future scenographic artists. This investigation aims to indicate guidelines that contribute to the development of the artistic and technical qualities of the scenographer, not just the capacity to execute their acquired attributes, but to prepare an active collaborator, a creative artist in the process of contemporary productions, participating in the development of the Scenic Arts.

Luciana Bueno 09 November 2007 (has links)
This work is based in the contemporary scenographic production of Sao Paulo cit y from a technical point of view: the procedures of the Scenographic Performance. The Italian style Scenic Area in its conception path, in its use and in its derivations, are subject to investigation in this text, as well as the use of such knowledge beyond its origins. In the Paulistano theater level, it is herewith suggested a likely link related to the ways to use the techniques of the scenic building between the beginning of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century, regarding the transformation of both the human and the technical resources. Therefore, despite the need of a linear speech, it is herewith suggested a remissive reading of this text, in a manner that history, technique and aesthetic jointly follow throughout this work

Performing the Electrical or My Heart is an Electromagnetic Chamber Scenographies of Power, Ecology and Speculative Practice

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Performing the Electrical traces the histories and futures of electrical discovery and knowledge through cultural performances, socio-political assemblages, and the more-than-human worldmaking functions of energy in general and electricity in particular, or what I refer to as energy-as-electricity. This project seeks to transform how energy-as-electricity is perceived, and thereby to re-vision the impact that energy-rich relationships might have ecologically—in both the social and environmental senses of the word. As a practice-led inquiry I use my scenographic sensibilities in combination with performance studies and energy humanities lenses to identify how energy-scapes form through social performances, material relations, and aesthetic/ritualistic interventions. This approach allows me to synthesize vastly different scales of energy-as-electricity performatives and spatialities and propose alternative framings which work towards decolonizing and re-feminizing energy-rich relationships. This research considers the way power flows, accumulates, and transforms through performance as embodied expression, practice and eventful doings of human and more-than-human agents. It asks: if place is practiced space (Henri Lefebvre), how can decolonizing and re-feminizing energy-rich relationships transform normative power relationships (or power geometries, as cultural geographer Doreen Massey refers to such globalized interconnections)—which are formed through electricity, technologies and colonial-capitalism? I ground this inquiry as an ecological intervention in order to investigate how performing with electricity differently (both in collective imaginations and quotidian interactions), can change the ways that electricity is produced and consumed in the time of the Anthropocene, Capitalocene, and Plasticene. The following study produces written and tacit knowledge that expands the framing of energy-rich relationships shared between human and more-than-human performatives. My provocation is that experiential encounters are critical for expanding the ontological plurality of energy-as-electricity with ecological a/effect. Drawing on the insights of performance scenographer Rachel Hann, I demonstrate that scenographic methodologies in an expanded field, along with embodied sensing, provide productive insights into this endeavor of expansion. This project both serves as a space making/space keeping provocation and offers a methodology for devising more desirable futures. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Performance 2020

Hallways. Place and object between body and narrative: scenographic approaches to devising theatre.

Glanville, Joanna 10 August 2021 (has links)
This explication seeks to frame a practice-led research project that explores the scenographic elements of place and object as an intermediary device between body and narrative in devising theatre. A focus of this work is scenographics as a mediating moment between traumatised body and painful narrative; using objects and place as a means of safely exploring and un/recovering memory to make theatre. The research also explores wider applications of scenographics in their formative and generative potential in devising theatre. The practical research is underpinned and located in various conceptual frameworks. Place is guided by Rachel Hann's work Beyond Scenography (2019) with a focus on place orientation, as well as terminologies of space and place introduced by Gay McAuley in various texts. Object is primarily considered through assemblage, semiotics and phenomenology with a focus on a disruption of the subject/object hierarchy as a means of facilitating a scenographic mediatory stand-in during the devising process and in the final theatre piece. The final practical output is process-orientated and focuses on devising a piece of theatre, Hallways, with other participants using place and object. This will be achieved through sets of exercises, activities and games developed throughout the research process; these will be expounded on in the paper.

Site Specific Opera : a Re-imagined Magic Flute as a Catalyst to the Narration of Fort Daspoortrand Heritage

Levenderis, Leandra Paula Rosa January 2018 (has links)
With the current upsurge of a technological era, there is an underlying global threat to the cultural development of theatre, especially opera. Therefore, there is a need for a paradigm shift that will re-imagine and transcend opera into the 21st century. Site-specific opera merges the potential of theatrical entertainment and the value of an existing site. Both the location and the performance have the ability to remove the audience from their lives and submerge them in a fantasy or created reality. With the focal approach being the interpretation of the Magic Flute Opera at a site-specific location, a concept of cultural heritage awareness is revealed. With this in mind, the preservation extends into a consideration of the existing site. The site, Fort Daspoortrand, is currently in a state of physical degradation, and the decay of heritage and cultural fabric is prominent. Thus, the potential for preservation and cultural celebration arises. It is proposed that through a site-specific opera performance of William Kentridge’s adaptation of The Magic Flute by Mozart, a sense of wareness can be created for both the site and a South African interpretation of opera. The opera will catalyse the awareness of the site, and the scenography will act as a vehicle to bring site and opera together in a visual and spatial experience. Through the merging of opera and site, the heritage and cultural significance of both entities will be explored, allowing the opportunity for life to be breathed back into both the fort and opera in general. The design intention of this project is to bring awareness to the existing fabric of the site, as well as the dramatic opportunities that the site naturally presents. In this way, the physical and cultural decay of both Fort Daspoortrand and opera are brought to the public’s attention. The intention in this creation of site awareness is to promote an afterlife for the site, by exposing its character in an attempt to ignite future development at the site once the opera has finished. Through combining opera and site, the audience will be exposed to the beauty of the site and the cultural richness of opera simultaneously. The temporary design intervention aims to strategically link the themes of The Magic Flute with the characteristics of the site to explore the relationship between narrative, fort and opera. Emphasis is placed on how to take the audience on a winding and intertwining journey of the site during the performance of the opera adaptation. The fluidity and natural progression of the audience through the site will ultimately create a reflective and emotive understanding of The Magic Flute’s theme of the journey from darkness to light. / Mini-dissertation Mint(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2018. / Architecture / MInt(Prof) / Unrestricted

Návrhy a realizace dekorací barokního divadla v Čechách v 18. století / Designs and Realization of Scenery in Baroque Theatres in Bohemia in the 18th century

Benčová, Monika January 2019 (has links)
Resumé This Ph.D. thesis deals with scenic designs and decorations of Baroque theatre in 18th century in Czech Republic. The paper presents development of theatre based on preserved decorations and scenic designs. And try to find the answer about scenic painting in Bohemia. The thesis focused mainly on scenic designes with connection to the aristocratic families. Timeline is defined by the work of Galli Bibiena's family and the work of Josef Platzer. The scenic decorations are presented on the background of Austrian and Italian influences that directly affected Czech culture and mutual connection with the other baroque theatres in the European cities. In this context, the question arises, which has become one of the main lines of thesis, whether there was purely Czech stage design influenced by European theater art or the application of Viennese and Italian designs on the Czech territory. And whether it can be referred to as "Czech stage art" or more generally Central European stage design. From the beginning, the work was designed to highlight the best examples. In my thesis I do not try to conceive completely the work of all well-known artists (scenographers), whether Czech or foreign, who have been involved in scenic creation in the Czech Republic, but I focus only on some examples that have significantly...

To unravel a circus : How textile create expression and content in Knitting Peace

Spange Yachin, Ida January 2023 (has links)
This thesis explores how textile contributes to meaning-making and spatial design in scenography. Through the theoretical lens of performativity theory, it studies three scenes from Cirkus Cirkör’s popular show Knitting Peace. Using semiotic analysis as formulated by Jan-Gunnar Sjölin, the thesis focuses on movement, spatiality and socio-cultural meaning through the three questions; How can textile enhance movement and rhythm? How is it used together with lighting to create changes in spatiality? And What connotations does textile induce, and how do they affect the overall meaning-making in scenography? The results suggest that textile is a valuable material in performance art and scenography. For example, textile behaves in ways that resemble both fluid and solid form. This allows for change of depth and shifting between open and closed spaces on stage with little effort. It also gives means to enhance and enlarge human movement in scale, intensity and time. In Knitting Peace this is used together with lighting design to create off sync layers of reality to symbolise a distorted dreamworld. The thesis shows how we can better understand the way textile affect us by applying perspectives that focus on its different characteristics. Moreover, it demonstrates that an interdisciplinary approach that builds on knowledge from different fields, such as fashion design and performance studies, can greatly benefit our understanding of the potential use of textile in arts.
