Social lmpact Assessment is a relatively new field of study in South Africa and
abroad. It is dynamic and constantly changes as it develops. Current literature
indicates that there is a need for SIA to be done through all phases of the project life
cycle. The assumption made in this study is that this is not happening in practice.
This study investigated the current practices in South Africa. Six case studies were
analysed. The results confirmed the assumptions. The case studies were measured
against the principles of Social lrnpact Assessment, lntegrated Environmental
Management and Social Development. The main recommendations are that Social
lmpact Assessments should be conducted throughout the Project Life Cycle and be
initiated as early in the planning phase as possible. It is recommended that Social
lmpact Practitioners should be exposed to the Social Development approach as
these two philosophies could enhance each other. Social Impact Assessment forms
part of the Integrated Environmental Management tools, and shouldn't be treated as
a snapshot assessment, but as a process. Only when treated as a process, it can

One hundred and eleven mother-child dyads visited the laboratory when children were 10 to 12 years old and again two years later. Children’s self-disclosure to mothers and mothers’ accurate knowledge of effective comforting strategies were examined together in the context of maternal warmth and children’s positive coping. Maternal warmth longitudinally predicted children’s disclosure, and children’s disclosure longitudinally predicted mothers’ accurate knowledge of comforting strategies. Maternal warmth moderated the association between mothers’ accurate knowledge of comforting strategies and children’s positive coping. Specifically, maternal knowledge predicted child coping only in children of cold mothers. Implications for the socialization of coping and the role of child disclosure and parents’ accurate knowledge in parenting interventions are discussed.

The aim - to explore people's welfare and happiness, and relationship between them in Lithuania. Job tasks: 1. Investigate scientific, theoretical and empirical literature dealing with the welfare and happiness. 2. Based on the literature analysis, create formulation of research methodology, and to provide its justification. 3. Examine human welfare and to analyze the determinants of human happiness index of the factors influencing the dynamics of Lithuania, and compared with data from other countries. 4. Examination welfare and happiness of the determinants of factors to examine the dynamics of their relationship, the application of statistical methods of analysis; 5. Make survey questionnaire, in order to identify the factors that influence people sense of happiness and to assess their impact on the feelings of happiness's scale. Hypothesis - people's feeling of happiness in Lithuania are directly dependent on their economic welfare. The work will contain three parts. The first part is an overview of scientific information, scientific articles related to the path of prosperity and happiness, and relationships. Children and Youths in Dharavi ́s rise to Empowerment : - from a NGO perspectiveSvensson, Sandra January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation view a sample of projects conducted by two different non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Dharavi, a slum-area in Mumbai, India, and examines how they con-tribute to children and youth ́s social development and empowerment. Due to the large global population of children and youths, as well as that a large percentage of the world ́s inhabitants reside in slum-areas, it is considered of importance to gain information regarding the social work that isbeing conducted with the focus. The field work is carried out through interviews and observations in the area. The focus is five different projects that are conducted by two different NGOs in Mumbai. This dissertation display how the two theories, empowerment and social development, are connected to each other as well as the positive impact the NGOs have on the participating childrenand youths. The findings of the field work lead to an understand-ing in which ways NGOs can help children and youths to reachempowerment and how they contribute to the social development of the participants. The research shows the impact the organizations activities have on the children and youths lives. / Denna uppsats granskar ett urval av projekt som genomförs av två olika icke-statliga organisationer i Dharavi, ett slumområde i Mumbai, Indien, och undersöker hur de bidrar till barn och ungdomars sociala utveckling och empowerment. Då en stor del av världens befolkning består av barn och ungdomar, samt att en stor del av den globala populationen lever i slumområden, anses det viktigt att inhämta information gällande det sociala arbete som bedrivs i dessa områden. Data till uppsatsen har inhämtats genom intervjuer och observationer från två icke-statliga organisationer i det valda området. Uppsatsen visar hur de två teorierna, empowerment och social utveckling, är kopplade till varandra och påvisar även det positiva inflytande de icke-statliga organisationerna har på sina deltagare. Resultaten av fältarbetet leder till en förståelse för på vilket sätt de enskilda organisationer kan bidra till att barn och ungdomar uppnår empowerment samt hur de bidrar till deltagarnas sociala utveckling. Forskningen visar den effekt organisationerna har på barnen och ungdomarnas liv.

The extracurricular experiences of island high school studentsLynn, Matthew R. 19 May 2011 (has links)
The purpose of my study was to explore the experiences of senior island high school students and their participation in extracurricular activities. I investigated a rural island high school, located on the west coast of Canada, by conducting interviews of senior high school students to reveal their experiences with extracurricular activities available at the school. Using a qualitative case-study design, I provide recommendations for improving access to extracurricular activities. My results support literature finding that voluntary participation in extracurricular activities positively affects student academic standing, and that recognized school excellence improves student culture. I also found that organizational efforts and transparency in programming are needed to entice nonparticipants to become involved. Through comparative reflective analysis, I determined that word-of-mouth was a primary source of extracurricular promotion; however, this was found to create tiers of social groups, which in turn prevented access to the extracurriculum. Participants also indicated that a longer timetabled school day was a barrier to participation, and that active community volunteering efforts in the operation and offering of extracurricular activities were limited. My research is aimed at enabling educational practitioners to improve access to extracurricular activities in an island high school environment. / Graduate
