The Buffering Effects of Religiosity on Adolescent Alcohol Abuse Coping following Victimization

Bryant, Mark R 05 1900 (has links)
This research comprised a secondary study using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health restricted data set to examine the buffering effects of religiosity on adolescent alcohol coping following victimization within the context of Agnew's general stain theory. Its purpose was to determine if religiosity buffered the effects of alcohol abuse coping following victimization for native-born and foreign-born non-Hispanic adolescents, and was designed as a follow-up research study to similarly replicate a prior study limited to native-born and foreign-born Hispanic adolescents. This study's findings were consistent with prior research that higher religiosity was generally predictive of lower levels of alcohol abuse. However, in the presence of violent victimization, religiosity did not buffer later increased alcohol abuse coping for non-Hispanic adolescents. Native-born religiously oriented adolescents were as likely to abuse alcohol following violent victimization as their native-born non-religious peers. Foreign-born religiously oriented versus non-religiously-oriented adolescents did not have statistically significant different outcomes on later alcohol abuse following victimization. Foreign-born non-Hispanic adolescents as a group appeared generally insensitive to victimization strain as measured by alcohol abuse coping. An important outcome of this study was the collateral finding that being Catholic substantially increased the likelihood of later alcohol abuse for both native-born and foreign-born non-Hispanic adolescents; the increase in alcohol abuse for foreign-born adolescents was especially pronounced. The study's findings have particular relevance for adolescent counseling and others working with adolescents, and especially for those working within a religious context. Numerous areas for additional research are identified and discussed.

Development of Community-Based Homestay Tourism in Nigeria: A Stakeholder Perspective

Ijose, Opemipo Alaba 05 1900 (has links)
This study explored the feasibility of developing community-based homestay tourism in Nigeria. Stakeholder theory was used to develop a strategy to ideally develop homestay tourism in the local communities, using Old Oyo National Park in Oyo State as a case study context. The approach entails assessing practicability and acceptability, the operational feasibility, and the potential outcome of developing community-based homestay tourism. A qualitative research design was deployed to capture credible results for this study, which entailed engaging tourism stakeholders through a focus group discussion data collection method conducted via Zoom. The participants were purposefully selected based on their experience in the tourism industry and their willingness to participate in the study. The various groups of stakeholders who provided data during the focus group discussion were academia, tour operators, NGOs, and local community stakeholder groups, respectively. The results showed that Nigeria's tourism state is at its lowest level due to a lack of funding, government attention, and insecurity. It was confirmed that the development of community-based homestay tourism would be practicable in Nigeria provided all stakeholders collaborated to formulate enabling tourism policies, agreed to co-manage, put into consideration the plight of the locals, and ensured the locals held a relevant position within the homestay management committee, were funded, and created effective strategies to market and promote the destination. For homestay tourism to be accepted in the local communities, the benefits must be communicated to the potential operators, the local culture must be respected, and economic benefits must be shared with equity.

L'intervention psychosociale dans le sport pour développer des habiletés de vie chez des jeunes à risque de délinquance

Lapointe, Laurence 08 1900 (has links)
The “Bien dans mes baskets” (BdmB) program, implemented in 1999 in a high school of Montreal, uses basketball to reach adolescents at risk of delinquency. The distinctive characteristic of BdmB is that the coaches are also social workers (CSW) who implement strategies to develop life skills among athlete-students (AS) who partake in the basketball extracurricular program. The aim of this study was to examine how the experiences lived through BdmB contributed to the development of life skills in young adults who have participated in the program when they were in high school. We used a retrospective qualitative study design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 young adults who were involved in the BdmB program during their high school. Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. A thematic content analysis of participants' accounts was performed to identify the specific role of team sport involvement with psychosocial interventions on the alumni players’ life skills development. The results suggest that 4 main factors contributed to life skills development in AS: modeling the CSW who epitomize the BdmB philosophy enables AS to emulate their coach’s behaviors; bonding between AS creates a new social network in which AS can find social support; a BdmB culture is internalized by sharing experiences among the BdmB AS and the CSW; BdmB has a protective effect against negative influences from the high-risk milieu in which AS live. The results suggest that team sports combined with psychosocial interventions has the potential to foster life skills development in youth at risk.

L’infirmière, la pratique de soin et la négociation : ethnographie des suivis postnatals à domicile en milieu multiethnique à Montréal

Audy, Emilie 04 1900 (has links)
This thesis is an analysis of the interactions between nurses and service users in the context of post-natal home monitoring. Based on an ethnographic study I conducted in Montreal (Bordeaux-Cartierville-Saint-Laurent), I have defined how nurses negotiate care practice with their service users. These ‘‘negotiations’’ permit them to fulfill their mandate even with the manifestation of difference that can arise between the nurse’s professional and the service users’ profane culture. The theoretical framework that I have built around the concept of negotiation is also supported by sociological literature on profession and health. In order to cater to the service users’ needs, the nurses inherently modulate their relationship to the public health norms. Five types of negotiation have resulted form this study: Cooperation, Compromise, Detachment, Typified Adaptation and Coercion. This narrative of these different forms of negotiation tells us how nurses manage to fulfil their mandate with the service users who do not subscribe to the Quebec public health prevention and promotion of healthy living values.

Self-administered HPV Testing as a Cervical Cancer Screening Option| Exploring the Perspectives of Hispanic and Arab Women in the United States

Kidder, Elizabeth O. 25 September 2014 (has links)

BACKGROUND: Though significant gains have been made in preventing cervical cancer over the past 30 years, it continues to cause morbidity and mortality among women in the United States, particularly among those women who are screened infrequently or not at all. More than half of cervical cancer deaths in the U.S. are among immigrants, and the incidence and mortality from cervical cancer is increasing among foreign-born women. Arab and Hispanic women living in the U.S. continue to have cervical cancer screening rates that are lower than the general population. Understanding what factors influence their cervical cancer screening practices and what new screening options may overcome their barriers to preventive screening may be effective in reducing disparities in the disease burden of cervical cancer.

HPV DNA testing has taken on a larger role in cervical cancer screening, and there is increasing evidence and support for the use of HPV testing alone as a primary cervical cancer screening test. Novel health screening devices have been developed that allow women to self-screen for HPV, which may offer opportunity to simplify the cervical cancer screening protocol and reach women who are not receiving recommended cervical cancer screening services.

OBJECTIVE: Because self-administered screening devices are not yet available and most women have not had exposure to them, there are limited quantitative and qualitative assessments of women's attitudes towards and likelihood to use such devices, particularly in the U.S. This study informs the development of culturally appropriate interventions and policies intended to improve cervical cancer screening rates among Arab and Hispanic women in the United States, and discusses implementation challenges and policy implications associated with incorporating self-administered HPV testing into the cervical cancer screening protocol in the U.S.

METHODS: A paper-based survey (n = 476) and individual interviews (n = 31) were used to explore Arab and Hispanic participants' screening behaviors, their likelihood to use HPV self-administered tests to screen for cervical cancer, their perceived self-efficacy in using self-screening tests, and the major concerns they have about self-screening.

RESULTS: Participants who were 1) uninsured, 2) knowledgeable about HPV and cervical cancer, 3) had high self-efficacy in their ability to use a self-screening test; and 4) had no concerns about the self-screening test were significantly more likely to use a self-screening test. Hispanic participants (74.0%) were significantly more likely than Arab participants (43.8%) to report they would be likely to use a self-administered cervical cancer screening test if it were available. Approximately half of uninsured (52.7%) and underscreened (47.1%) participants reported they would be more likely to get screened for cervical cancer if an at-home self-screening test were available.

CONCLUSIONS: A majority of participants responded positively to the option for HPV self-testing as a cervical cancer screening option, suggesting that it may an effective screening modality to reach women who are not accessing routine screening. More research is needed on implementing a self-screening option, particularly among underscreened populations.
