Vegetation productivity responds to sub-annual climate conditions across semiarid biomes

Barnes, Mallory L., Moran, M. Susan, Scott, Russell L., Kolb, Thomas E., Ponce-Campos, Guillermo E., Moore, David J. P., Ross, Morgan A., Mitra, Bhaskar, Dore, Sabina 05 1900 (has links)
In the southwest United States, the current prolonged warm drought is similar to the predicted future climate change scenarios for the region. This study aimed to determine patterns in vegetation response to the early 21st century drought across multiple biomes. We hypothesized that different biomes (forests, shrublands, and grasslands) would have different relative sensitivities to both climate drivers (precipitation and temperature) and legacy effects (previous-year's productivity). We tested this hypothesis at eight Ameriflux sites in various Southwest biomes using NASA Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from 2001 to 2013. All sites experienced prolonged dry conditions during the study period. The impact of combined precipitation and temperature on Southwest ecosystems at both annual and sub-annual timescales was tested using Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). All biomes studied had critical sub-annual climate periods during which precipitation and temperature influenced production. In forests, annual peak greenness (EVImax) was best predicted by 9-month SPEI calculated in July (i.e., January-July). In shrublands and grasslands, EVImax was best predicted by SPEI in July through September, with little effect of the previous year's EVImax. Daily gross ecosystem production (GEP) derived from flux tower data yielded further insights into the complex interplay between precipitation and temperature. In forests, GEP was driven by cool-season precipitation and constrained by warm-season maximum temperature. GEP in both shrublands and grasslands was driven by summer precipitation and constrained by high daily summer maximum temperatures. In grasslands, there was a negative relationship between temperature and GEP in July, but no relationship in August and September. Consideration of sub-annual climate conditions and the inclusion of the effect of temperature on the water balance allowed us to generalize the functional responses of vegetation to predicted future climate conditions. We conclude that across biomes, drought conditions during critical sub-annual climate periods could have a strong negative impact on vegetation production in the southwestern United States.

An Investigation of the Relationship Between Health Education and Physical Education

James, Russell D. 08 1900 (has links)
The problem in this study was to examine the relationship between health education and physical education as areas of specialization as perceived by selected health and physical educators in five southwestern states. Data for the study were obtained by use of a questionnaire. Surveyed educators consisted of college and university department chairmen, secondary curriculum directors, and secondary instructors. The data were presented in such a manner to indicate opinions of the total group of respondents as well as those of each of the three categories. The findings of the study indicate that health education and physical education are related historically and are substantially related at the current time, and that specialization in teacher preparation and instruction in each area is desirable.

Looking Outward from the Village: The Contingencies of Soil Moisture on the Prehistoric Farmed Landscape near Goodman Point Pueblo

Brown, Andrew D 08 1900 (has links)
Ancestral Pueblo communities of the central Mesa Verde region (CMVR) became increasingly reliant on agriculture for their subsistence needs during Basketmaker III (BMIII) through Terminal Pueblo III (TPIII) (AD 600–1300) periods. Researchers have been studying the Ancestral Pueblo people for over a century using a variety of methods to understand the relationships between climate, agriculture, population, and settlement patterns. While these methods and research have produced a well-developed cultural history of the region, studies at a smaller scale are still needed to understand the changes in farming behavior and the distribution of individual sites across the CMVR. Soil moisture is the limiting factor for crop growth in the semi-arid region of the Goodman Watershed in the CMVR. Thus, I constructed the soil moisture proxy model (SMPM) that is on a local scale and focuses on variables relevant to soil moisture – soil particle-size, soil depth, slope, and aspect. From the SMPM output, the areas of very high soil moisture are assumed to represent desirable farmland locations. I describe the relationship between very high soil moisture and site locations, then I infer the relevance of that relationship to settlement patterns and how those patterns changed over time (BMIII – TPIII). The results of the model and its application help to clarify how Ancestral Pueblo people changed as local farming communities. The results of this study indicates that farmers shifted away from use of preferred farmland during Terminal Pueblo III, which may have been caused by other cultural factors. The general outcome of this thesis is an improved understanding of human-environmental relationships on the local landscape in the CMVR.

The Use of Faunal Remains for Identifying Shifts in Pit Structure Function in the Mesa Verde Region: a Case Study From Goodman Point

Winstead, Christy 08 1900 (has links)
The archaeofaunal remains left by the Ancestral Puebloan people of Goodman Point Unit provides a valuable, yet underutilized resource into pit structure function. This thesis explores temporal changes in pit structure use and evaluates if a final feast occurred during a kiva decommissioning. The results from zooarchaeological analyses of a pithouse and two great kivas suggest that changes in pit structures at Goodman Point mimic the regional trend toward specialization until late Pueblo III. Cross-cultural studies on feasts, southwest ethnographies and previous zooarchaeological work established methods for identifying a feast. The analysis of differences in faunal remains from a great kiva and multiple room block middens imply that the remains in the kiva were from a final feast prior to a decommissioning ceremony and were not fill. Spatially and temporally the great kiva appears to be a unique, specialized structure in the cultural development of the Goodman Point community.

Estudo dos radionuclídeos naturais - Ra-226, Ra-228 e Pb-210 - em alguns registros sedimentares do Atlântico Sudoeste ao longo do Holoceno / Study of natural radionuclides - 226Ra, 228Ra and 210Pb - in marine sediment cores from Southwest Atlantic during the Holocene

Costa, Alice Miranda Ribeiro 19 August 2016 (has links)
Natural radionuclides from 238U and 232Th series have been successfully applied as tracers of environmental process and climate changes. The 210Pb (half-life of 22.2 years) is used in the geochronological dating technique of sediment cores of the last 100-150 years, and its respective sedimentation rate determination. The study of 226Ra and 228Ra concentrations (half-lives of 1,600 years and 5.75 years, respectively) helps calculate the activity of 210Pb in excess in the environment, besides being important tracers of marine processes, as ground water discharge. In this work it was determined the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 228Ra and 210Pb in four short marine cores collected since the continental platform to upper slope of Southwest Atlantic Ocean. Taking into account the results obtained, sedimentation rates and the ages of each sediment layer were determined using the geochronological dating method with 210Pb. All sediment samples were total acid digested in microwave. The sequential radiochemical separation of 226Ra, 228Ra, 210Pb were performed, obtaining in the end the precipitation of Ba(Ra)SO4 and PbCrO4. The gross α measurements of 226Ra and gross β measurements of 228Ra and 210Pb from the precipitates were carried out in a gas-flow low background proportional counter. Concerning all cores analyzed, the activities concentrations of 226Ra ranged from 14 Bq.kg-1 to 154 Bq.kg-1; the concentrations of 228Ra ranged from 17 Bq.kg-1 to 45 Bq.kg-1; and the concentrations of 210Pb ranged from 20 Bq.kg-1 to 2,073 Bq.kg-1. High values of 210Pb were observed on the top of all the cores studied, mainly related to atmospheric deposition. The results obtained in this work were of the same order of magnitude of those reported in the literature available on non contaminated areas of Southeast Brazilian Coast. Sedimentation rates fall with the increase of water column depth and ranged from 0,049 cm.ano-1 to 0.40 cm.y-1.

Atividade e diversidade catabólica da biomassa microbiana do solo alterada pelo uso da terra / Effects of soil land use on microbial activity and catabolic diversity

Mazzetto, André Mancebo 29 January 2010 (has links)
The increasing demand for food creates environmental problems, mainly due to the removal of native vegetation cover for agriculture expansion in Brazil. These changes in land use leads to changes in the soil organic matter dynamics. The vegetation type also affects the soil biota and, therefore, its change causes modifications in the microbial biomass, as shown by studies involving deforestation. Microorganisms represent the most biological and physiological diverse in soil, as well as being responsible for more than 95% of the decomposition and nutrient cycling. For this reason, the demand for fast and reliable indicators to detect changes in soil quality, especially for those based on micro-organisms has been growing continuously. The main objective in this research was to check the differentiation of patterns in activity and functional diversity of soil microbial biomass under natural vegetation, pastures and agricultural systems in use. The area covered by this study corresponds to the states of Rondônia (RO) and Mato Grosso (MT), which was divided into 11 ecoregions relatively homogeneous in terms of soil, vegetation, geology, climate and landscape. A canonical variate analysis was used in some physical, chemical and microbiological factors in each ecoregion and land use, looking for patterns and variables that can differentiate them. The native areas showed distinct patterns in the dynamics of microbiological attributes mainly related to the amount of litter in each biome studied. For the disturbed areas, there were similar results between pastures and native areas, significantly different from the results obtained in agricultural areas, which due to differences in management and kind of cultures analyzed showed a great variability in its final result. The results support the recommendation for use of microbiological attributes as indicators of land use change, combined with chemical and physical factors. The substrate-induced respiration (or catabolic diversity) was efficient in the separation of land uses and ecoregions. These findings support the idea that specific land uses have specific groups of microbial biomass, regardless soil type, climate or other external influences.

Composição e distribuição das larvas de invertebrados bênticos do Banco dos Abrolhos e região adjacente, com ênfase em larvas de caranguejos braquiúros / Meroplankton spatial structure and variability on Abrolhos Bank and adjacent areas, with emphasis on brachyuran larvae

Koettker, Andréa Green 04 April 2013 (has links)
The composition and distribution of benthic invertebrate larvae of Abrolhos Bank were investigated in this study, with emphasis on brachyuran crabs. A mesoscale field approach encompassed the entire bank and adjacent areas from the inner shelf to the open ocean, where vertical plankton tows were carried out between July-August 2007. Meroplankton larvae, including brachyuran representatives, were more abundant and diverse in shallow stations (depth <100 m) than in deep water (depth> 450 m), suggesting that meroplankton is well distributed along the bank but avoids advection towards the open ocean. The estuarine influence on the study area was negligible or virtually inexistent, as suggested by the brachyuran larval composition. However, the occurrence and dominance of larvae of intertidal species in stations close to the coast suggest the existence of a larval retention mechanism in this area. The homogeneity in the distribution and abundance of brachyuran larvae added to the high concentration of initial zoeae of most taxa across the entire shallow area indicate the existence of some degree of connectivity via larval dispersion among adult populations. In addition to the mesoscale study, a small-scale sampling scheme around Sebastião Gomes reef (15 km from the coast) and Abrolhos Archipelago (60 km) was implemented in two seasonal periods. No difference was found between these two environments based in terms of abundance and ecological indexes. On the other hand, the composition of the brachyuran community was different between the environments, especially in the case of dominant species. No seasonal differences were detected in those shallow areas. The identification of brachyuran larvae during the course of this study led to the development of the first key for the identification of known first zoeal stages of brachyuran crabs from the Brazilian coast.
