TheDebt of Love in the Theology of Richard of St. Victor:Landrith, Robin January 2024 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Boyd Taylor Coolman / Richard of St. Victor is known primarily for two arguments from his book On the Trinity. The first is that the relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit can be understood from the logic of love, which tends toward sharing with others. The second is that a divine person (persona) is an “individual existence of a divine nature,” a revision of the definition of personhood given centuries earlier by Boethius. Fewer contemporary theologians are familiar with the third major innovation Richard makes in this work. In his description of love among the trinitarian persons, Richard organizes the three loving divine persons according to three modes of loving: gratuitous love (amor gratuitus) identical with the Father, owed love (amor debitus) identical with the Holy Spirit, and love mixed from both (amor permixtus) identical with the Son. The most striking—because the most apparently problematic—part of this scheme is the nomination of amor debitus, owed love, as a mode of loving proper to the Trinity. Presenting the apparently contradictory combination of owing and loving as a love proper to God as God, the conundra raised by Richard’s use of this phrase were interpreted away by his scholastic readers in a way that buried the potential of his insight for discussions about the nature of love called divine. My dissertation analyzes the meaning of amor debitus to reframe and re-present Richard’s arguments in On the Trinity with Richard’s radical claim about the nature of intra-trinitarian love in clearer view. I argue that the notion of owed love represents a class of experience which is distinct both from the obligation of a command (typically associated with debitum) and from the freedom of an unaffected choice (typically associated with amor). Amor debitus fuses the quality of the command or commanding conditions with a freedom that is not intrinsic to these prior conditions, but does not leave them behind. Richard’s link between owed love as a personal property in the Trinity and as the norm of human love for God gives Richard a fresh approach to the idea that “God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit” (Rom. 5:5), and therefore also to the longstanding Christian claim that human love is owed to God, ordered to neighborly service, and free. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2024. / Submitted to: Boston College. The impact of national culture on the transfer of 'best practice operations management' in hotels in St LuciaHope, Christine A. January 2004 (has links)
No / This article briefly outlines the convergence vs. divergence debate before describing research into the potential impact of national culture on the transfer of ''best practice operations management'' to hotels in St. Lucia. The main focus of the paper is on the findings of fieldwork, which supports the contention that national culture does potentially create a barrier to the successful transposition of approaches developed elsewhere. In the case of St. Lucia high uncertainty avoidance and leanings towards high power distance appeared to hinder the adoption of teamworking, empowerment and communication. In addition, attitude towards time and punctuality also mitigated against the provision of a reliable service as and when required. However, with training and supportive HR practices, the end results achieved by International Chains did demonstrate the value of operating ''people friendly'' policies in line with ''best practice''.

The Reaction of Jonathan Swift to Viscount Bolingbroke's Ethical ViewsCamp, Paul W., 1908- 08 1900 (has links)
The problem investigated in this paper is the unlikely friendship of Swift and Bolingbroke. The purpose is to assess the reaction of Swift to the ethics of Bolingbroke. Under examination are the conflicting opinions of these men in regard to morals, money, and ethics. Chapter I contains immoral actions of Bolingbroke. Chapter II shows Swift's manner of life and his reaction to Bolingbroke's immorality. Chapter III gives Swift's attitude to money, Bolingbroke's attitude, and Swift's reaction to Bolingbroke's opinion. Chapter IV contains Bolingbroke's ethical philosophy. And Chapter V reveals Swift's religious views and his reaction to Bolingbroke's ethics. The conclusion is that Swift disapproved of Bolingbroke's ethics, but did not break with him on account of them.

Fighting Spirit: A History of St. Henry's Catholic Church New Orleans 1871-1929Green, Alvah J., III 18 December 2015 (has links)
In 2009, the Archdiocese of New Orleans went through a reorganization that resulted in the closure of numerous parishes under its direction. This thesis will look at how one of the parishes closed during this reorganization, St. Henry’s, had already faced, and survived, numerous attempts at closure. A study of these previous attempts reveals that internal church politics were often on display and the driving force behind the decisions. Using documents from the Archdiocesan Archives of New Orleans, this thesis looks at the history and leadership of St. Henry’s parish, and examines how the survival of a church often has more to do with the personalities of those in leadership positions and less to do with the propagation of faith.

Anfragebearbeitung auf Mehrkern-RechnerarchitekturenHuber, Frank 24 May 2012 (has links)
The upcoming generation of many-core architectures poses several new challenges for software development: Software design and software implementation has to change from sequential execution to a highly parallel execution, such that it takes full advantage of the steadily growing number of cores on a single processor. With this thesis, we investigate such highly parallel program execution in the context of relational database management systems (RDBMSs). We consider the complete process of query processing and identify four problem areas which are crucial for efficient parallel query processing on many-core architectures. These four areas are: Hardware, physical data model, query execution, and query optimization. Furthermore, we present a framework which covers all four parts, one after another. First, we give a detailed survey of computer hardware with a special focus on memory and processors. Based on this survey we propose a hardware model. Our abstraction aims to simplify the task of software development on many-core hardware. Based on the hardware model, we investigate physical data models and evaluate how the physical data model may support optimal query execution by providing efficient and parallelizable data structures. Additionally, we design a new index structure that utilizes data parallel execution by using SIMD operations. The next layer within our framework is query execution, for which we present a new task based query execution model. Our query execution model allows for a lightweight parallelism. Finally, we cover query optimization by explaining approaches for optimizing resource utilization on a query local point of view as well as query global point of view.
