Faced with unprecedented time lived by Brazilian`s economy and, especially, the national stock exchange, mainly after obtaining the investment grade for Brazil, this paper addresses a theme that has deserved a huge space in the mainstream media that is technical analysis. From a sample of 37 stocks listed on the Stock Exchange of Sao Paulo in the period between January 1999 and August 2009, this paper examines if the technical analysis may or may not add value to investment decisions. Through the development of confidence intervals, constructed using the technique of Bootstrap sample inference, and consistent with the null hypothesis of market efficiency in its weak form, we tested 4 technical systems of trading. More specifically, we obtained the results of each system applied to the original series of the assets. Then we compared these results with the average of the results obtained when the same systems were applied to 1000 simulated series, according to a random walk, of each asset. If markets are efficient in its weak form, there would be no reason to find strategies with positive returns based only on historical values of assets. That is, there would be no reason for the results of the original series to be larger than those of the simulated series. The empirical results found here suggested that the systems tested were unable to anticipate the future using only past data. However, some of them have generated significant returns and were surpassed only by the series simulated in approximately 25% of the sample, indicating that technical analysis does have value.

Diek Grobler : an artists monograph with interactive catalogueLangerman, Jorike 09 1900 (has links)
This is a monograph on the South African artist Diek Grobler. The aim is to
contextualise the artist‟s oeuvre up to 2009 and to explore the visual
metaphors in his art.
Grobler has a fascination for stories. He blends tales of traditional Western
mythology, African mythology, Christian religion, folklore and magical
realism into narrative artworks. Through visual metaphors the artist
comments on the everyday human dramas that surround him – be they
political, social, psychological or cultural. Furthermore, he adds an element
of surprise to his sketches of human drama, by infusing them with irony
and humour.
My research reflects the diverse nature of Grobler‟s oeuvre as it
investigates works from various artistic genres such as painting, sculpture,
illustration, performance art, avant-garde theatre and animation. It also
examines a blend of different artistic media such as ceramics, oil paint,
gouache, pastels, scraperboard, earthenware, 2D computer animation,
puppetry, and stop-motion animation. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / M.A. (Art History)

Second order selection pressures promoting the evolution and maintenance of cooperation in microbial and in silico systems / Pressions de sélection de second ordre liées à l'évolution de la coopération dans des systèmes microbiens et numériquesFrénoy, Antoine 27 November 2014 (has links)
In the first part, I show how digital organisms adapt their genomes to encode cooperation-related genes in a more constrained way (evolvability suppression), especially using operons and overlaps also involving essential genes. In the second part, we experimentally test this view of gene overlaps as an evolutionary constraint, using both algorithmic and synthetic biology tools that we have developed. In the third part, I use agent-based simulations to show how a form of division of labour can be interpreted as a cooperative system in the light of modern evolutionary theory. In the final part, I show that the patterns of dispersal of cooperative alleles due to hitchhiking phenomena play an important role in the evolution of cooperation. The last result holds even though the hitchhiking mechanisms also applies to non-cooperative alleles, thanks to the relatedness (at cooperation-related loci) created by the local invasion of beneficial mutations (at loci not related to cooperation). The beneficial mutations form a complex and interesting equilibrium with mutational robustness, which I investigate using in silico evolution. On the whole, these results call for a more careful consideration of the second-order selection pressures in the study of social evolution, and show the necessity for more realistic models allowing to integrate such evolutionary forces. My thesis research specifically highlights the importance of the mutational landscape in the study of microbial populations and shows the increasing potential of synthetic biology as a tool to study such landscape and microbial evolution in general.

Metodika vývoje a validace softwaru pro bezpečnostní části řídících systémů v divadelní technice / Methodology Development and Validation of Software for Safety-Related Parts of Control Systems in Theater TechniqueDrlík, Michal January 2019 (has links)
This thesis describes what the theatre is and what types of machinery can be found there. Then the issue of stage technical machinery is presented into the czech context, respectively into the Europian legislation with the emphasis on the technical norms usage, which are necessary to fulfil in order to reach this aim. In the next part of the thesis is made the analysis of control systems, which are used in the stage technics with the emphasis on the functionality of these control systems, since this functionality determines number and range of possible danger and dangerous events, later on. These dangerous situations are named and specified in detail, thereby their existence, importance and necessity of solution is being emphasized. There is also a possible solution outlined that these dangerous events can be solved in many cases by using of these programmable systems relating to the safety, thereby safety functions realized by these functions. Then the single steps are described into V-model with appropriate documents of these V-model steps. Outcome of this thesis will be suggested model of method and its development and software validation for programmable and control systems in theatre technology.

Prediction horizon requirement in control and extreme load analyses for survivability : Advancements to improve the performance of wave energy technologiesShahroozi, Zahra January 2021 (has links)
The main objective of wave energy converters (WECs) is to ensure reliable electricity production at a competitive cost. Two challenges to achieving this are ensuring an efficient energy conversion and offshore survivability. This thesis work is structured in three different sections: Control and maximum power optimization, forces and dynamics analysis in extreme wave conditions, and statistical modeling of extreme loads in reliability analysis. The need for prediction and future knowledge of waves and wave forces is essential due to the non-causality of the optimal velocity relation for wave energy converters. Using generic concepts and modes of motion, the sensitivity of the prediction horizon to various parameters encountered in a real system is elaborated. The results show that through a realistic assumption of the dissipative losses, only a few seconds to about half a wave cycle is sufficient to predict the required future knowledge for the aim of maximizing the power absorption. The results of a 1:30 scaled wave tank experiment are used to assess the line force and dynamic behaviour of a WEC during extreme wave events. Within the comparison of different wave type representations, i.e. irregular, regular and focused waves, of the same sea state, the results show that not all the wave types deliver the same maximum line forces. As a strategy of mitigating the line forces during extreme wave events, changing the power take-off (PTO) damping may be employed. With consideration of the whole PTO range, the results indicate an optimum damping value for each sea state in which the smallest maximum line force is obtained. Although wave breaking slamming and end-stop spring compression lead to high peak line forces, it is possible that they level out due to the overtopping effect. Waves with a long wavelength result in large surge motion and consequently higher and more damaging forces. On the investigation of reliability assessment of the wave energy converter systems, computing the return period of the extreme forces is crucial. Using force measurement force data gathered at the west coast of Sweden, the extreme forces are statistically modelled with the peak-over-threshold method. Then, the return level of the extreme forces over 20 years for the calm season of the year is computed.

Aktivní elektrické filtry na bázi obvodů se spínanými kapacitory / Active electrical filters based on switched-capacitor circuitsTřeček, Stanislav January 2009 (has links)
This thesis deals with concept of universal frequency filter by application of a switched-capacitor functional block. The concept is based on the theory of switched-capacitor circuits and the theory of a design of classical frequency filters. The printed circuit board was designed based on the filter connection developed by using a software Eagle. The filter was implemented as a laboratory product. This product has been revitalized and the frequency response of all types of filters has been measured. The measured parameters were compared with the parameters set out in the technical documentation of functional block.

Návrh nových aktivních filtrů pomocí grafů signálových toků / Design of new active filters, using signal flow graphsJašek, František January 2010 (has links)
This master’s thesis describes the design of the frequency filters by the help of the graph of the signal flows. There are defined by modern components like GVC (Generalized Voltage Conveyor), GCC (Generalized Current Conveyor), CF (Current Follower), DO-CF (Dual-Output Current Follower), OTA (Operational Transconductance Amplifier), BOTA (Ballanced Operational Transconductance Amplifier) and CFTA (Current Follower Transconductance Amplifier), the graphs of the signal flows, which describe their activity in the thesis. In the other part of the thesis is illustrated the procedure of the design of the frequency filters by the help of the graphs of the signal flows. For the concrete design was selected in the first case as the active component double output current follower and in the second case the CFTA. There are noted all designed circuits of the frequency filters also their characteristic equations in this thesis. The activity of the selected circuits was remitted to the analysis in the simulation program called PSpice. Because the active components, with which was engaged in the design of the filter which doesn’t exist in the real form, that is why the UCC, which is sufficing for attestation of the function of the circuit, was used for the simulation. The simulation was implemented in the frequency range 10 Hz to 10 MHz.
