The Implementation of a Social-Emotional Learning Curriculum for Targeted Students: Evaluating Strong Start as a Tier II Intervention

Schwartz, Michael 21 November 2016 (has links)
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is an accepted way of promoting an individual’s resilience, which is the ability to overcome challenging life circumstances to lead a fulfilling life. SEL is traditionally taught in schools as a universal, classroom-wide intervention. However, there is currently a gap in using SEL curricula as secondary, Tier II interventions. Strong Start, a SEL program, was evaluated as a Tier II intervention with 35 2nd grade students using a randomized-control trial design. Data were collected from students on their content knowledge of social-emotional constructs as well as from teachers on ratings of student problem behaviors and prosocial behaviors. Findings suggest improvements in student knowledge, teacher ratings of problem behaviors, and teacher ratings of prosocial behaviors for all students over time, with no significant group by time interaction. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

Mello, Margareth Benedito de Jesus Bressani de 15 May 2015 (has links)
This study aimed to characterize the motivation of students learning process who attend the Technological Higher Education, identified as short-term courses. The research involved 288 students from public and private higher education institutions. The questionnaire used as a tool for this research was the Scale for Evaluation of Motivation to Learn for Higher Education Students (SML Boruchovitch e Neves, 2005), which has already been tested and validated national wide. This tool evaluates the motivational orientation of the higher education student considering intrinsic and extrinsic levels of motivation related to learning. It was also applied a Brazilian adaptation of the Social Desirability Scale of Marlowe-Crowne, prepared by Ribas Jr., Hutz and Moura (2004). The main objective of the research was to identify whether the fact of choosing a technological course, focused on professionalization, influences the motivational orientation in comparison with other students enrolled in regular college courses. The main theoretical bases for this study are the sociocognitive, self-fulfillment and achievement goals theories. It was found that students Intrinsic Motivation means was (IM) 45.23, indicating autonomy and interest in learning. The Extrinsic Motivation mean was (EM) 28.5, which indicates need of external recognition. Thus, the extrinsic motivation is meaningful to the students of technological courses and intrinsic motivation is similar to that found in previous research with students of bachelor courses. The results were discussed in the light of the variables studied as well results from previous research

Educational psychologists' changing role and distinctive contribution within the context of commissioned services

Winward, Victoria January 2015 (has links)
Following financial cuts introduced by the government in 2010, fewer funding and decision-making powers are held within local authorities, restricting their role as the provider of public services (Buser, 2013). As a result, the majority of local authority educational psychology teams have adopted a partially or fully-traded model of service delivery, with the aim of generating income to meet some or all service costs (Woods, 2014a). Educational psychologists have expressed concern about whether service commissioners value their distinctive contribution enough to purchase services (Fallon, Woods & Rooney, 2010). This study sought to investigate the response to trading and what impact this has had on the role of the educational psychologist, from the perspectives of service commissioners and educational psychologists. A multiple-case study design was implemented, following a mixed methods approach. Two partially-traded local authority educational psychology services were recruited. Participants from the emerging service included five educational psychologists and three small scale service commissioners. Participants from the established service included three educational psychologists, three small scale service commissioners and two large scale service commissioners. Focus groups, interviews and service brochures provided qualitative data, which were incorporated with quantitative service delivery data. All qualitative data were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Findings were presented as thematic maps. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics to describe trends in service use. Findings show that the impact of trading on the role and contribution of the educational psychologist has been largely positive. Trading appears to have had a regenerating effect by creating the opportunity for an extension in the type and range of work now being completed. The findings are discussed in relation to current and future educational psychologist role and give an up-to-date insight into why the role exists, who may be willing to pay for the role and how this evolving role fits within the broader political contexts of education, special educational needs and disability.

Educação escolar e constituição da consciência: um estudo com adolescentes a partir da psicologia histórico-cultural / School education and the formation of conscience: a study on young people from the historic-cultural psychology approach

Zaira de Fatima de Rezende Gonzalez Leal 20 May 2010 (has links)
It also analyzes factors which reveal the constitution of humanized or alienated conscience through discussions on themes dealing with young people, education at school, social reality and work. When conscience formation is focused, the really existing possibilities within the school context are identified and selected so that a humanized conscience may be constituted during the teenage period. Investigation is based on the presuppositions of Historical and Cultural Psychology through factors developed mainly by Vygotsky, Leontiev, Luria and others. Current investigation comprises bibliographical study and field research using focal group technique so that information required for its conclusion may be obtained. It also involved the participation of sixteen young people in the last year of government secondary school. Information contained in the young peoples discourse provided data on the manner they organized themselves and perceived their surrounding reality. This is a factor for the understanding of their contribution in school education in conscience formation and for the understanding of the world and society. Information obtained from activities with young people on chosen themes was somewhat chaotic within the field assignment context. They had to be organized through abstractions so that they could be understood beyond the surface and reach the reality under analysis. They were at first organized according to their external contents by sub-items. Their relationships, internal connections and contradictions were then understood through analytic thought. Analysis highlights the naturalness and spontaneity with which young people express their reality. Since they understand it clearly and without any mediation, an empirical relationship with reality is thus evident. School education to which they had access failed to give them a training in theoretical thought through which they could understand reality in its several determinations. It was not possible for them to overcome alienation, a constituent element in their conscience, in current society

Psicanálise: uma inspira-ação para a psicologia escolar? / Psychoanalysis: an inspire-action to the school psychology?

Leandro Alves Rodrigues dos Santos 30 April 2003 (has links)
It investigates the possibility of an inspiration by the psychoanalitical reference at the practice of the school psychologist. Part of the narrative and problems involved which took place between 1996 and 1997, with a group of 10 teachers from elementary school in a public school. In 2002 there is a return to this school and a research with the teachers who took part in such experience is made, by means of interviews. Through these witnesses, there is an analysis of the consequences of this type of survey, the viability of this inspiration by the psychoanalitical reference and the amplitude of the possibility of the extension of the psychoanalitical concepts in Culture. It concludes that, based on data that we obtained by articulating them with the theorical backup of the field researchers of the intersection between psychoanalysis and education, which the experience made it possible to find out variables that must be taken as an objective of reflection: the background of the psychologist to the repetition of these techniques; the possible relationship between the psychologist and the psychoanalysis, the implications of the transmission of this theory at the graduation of psychology and the subjective issues of each psychologist that may be connected with their choices. Finally, is suggests changes in the ways of transmitting knowledge, which occurs in the courses of psychology.

Působení školní psycholožky/psychologa v oblasti učitelského vyhoření / School psychologist's work in teacher's burnout syndrome

Bartoňová, Anna January 2019 (has links)
This thesis deals with the work of school psychologists in the field of teachers burnout syndrom. The purpose of this study is to describe how the school psychologists perceive burnout syndrome, how they contribute in its prevention and solving this problem in schools. The theoretical part focuses on the definition of school psychology according to current Czech law and available studies. The focus is on the work of school psychologists with teachers. The following chapters describe burnout syndrome, its causes, symptoms, prevention and how to handle it. The focus is on the teachers, whose job can be risky due to burnout syndrome. The practical part includes the results of qualitative research. The research was derived through interviews with 11 school psychologists (10 women and 1 man). According to my analysis I found that the school psychologists view burnout syndrom as a genuine problem and also recognise that being a teacher can be a risky occupation. They do not have any appropriate diagnostic tools to detect the professional satisfaction of the teachers. In some cases they monitor the situation at school. While working, they both consciously and unconsciously contribute to the prevention of the teachers burnout syndrome. When the teachers know that the psychologists are there for them, it...

Deficiência mental leve: processos de escolarização e de subjetivação / Mild mental handicap: schooling and subjectivation processes

Amaral, Tatiana Platzer do 29 September 2004 (has links)
A eficácia do processo de conformação de subjetividade acontece pela responsabilização de si mesma pelo fracasso, associada ao insistente desejo de retorno à escola, uma vez que na realidade são vítimas de uma escola pública historicamente ineficiente inserida numa sociedade excludente / This doctorate thesis focuses on the subjectivation process of students with mild mental handicap, as well as its production, according to the perspective of two former students of public schools from the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The schooling process is understood as a mediation element between the individual and society, between other students and students with mild mental handicap and it allows us to recognize the importance of the descriptions and the analysis of the former students in relation to their passage through the school system and the process of being classified as special students. The theoretical framework is based on authors connected to the socio-historic approach in School/Educational Psychology, as well as the socio-historic discussions in the field of mental handicap. This research is a study case based on two females, aged 31 and 34, who were formerly enrolled as special students and were interviewed between 2002 and 2003. School documentation, written productions, proposed by the researcher, and interviews with the students mothers were used in this study. The analysis was divided into three different moments: social characterization and characterization of the students family; schooling in the condition of a non-learner, generating mild mental handicap; and living school exclusion. Based on the history of the students, it was possible to trace evidences of a classification and homogenization process, taking place during the school years of students who came from working classes, and which culminated in school exclusion of students with mild mental handicap. This situation was marked by a general disbelief in the students learning capacity but had a resistance strategy carried out by both the former students, as well as their mothers, to assure schooling. There is a process of subjective conformation, permeated by a painful plea of guilty in which cry, despair, revolt, solitude and fear are among the feelings expressed by the students. The former students had an intense history of loss of vital and social rights, as they incorporated the belief of their own incapacity and the eternal need for supervision by more responsible people, and part of this belief is produced in the relationship with educators and health professionals. The efficacy of the subjective conformation process is characterized when the students blame themselves for the failure, associated with a constant desire to return to school, once they are actually victims of a public school which is historically inefficient and immersed in a segregating society

Estudos para uma história da psicologia educacional e escolar no Brasil / Studies for a history of educational and school psychology in Brazil

Barbosa, Deborah Rosaria 18 April 2011 (has links)
The history of Psychology is scientific production fertile field, but there is few papers that records the history from protagonist\'s perspective. This thesis shows how Educational and School Psychology was build in Brazil since thirties of last century, using the Annales School perspective, oral history and historiography pluralist. With objectives, this thesis identifies psychologist\'s role at educative field and understand how this professional was inserted in educational context. Thereby, this research gathered several historiographic material and oral testimonies. Five professionals pioneers of this history gave his testimonials about Educational and School Psychology in Brazil. As pioneers, we defined the first ones contributed in significant way at specific moment. The pioneers were chosen from the following: a) being the author of significant publications in the area, b) being a professional who worked with Educational and School Psychology c) being a teacher in the area and/or c) has participated in important institutions in the area. The interviewees were: Samuel Pfromm Netto, Geraldina Porto Witter, Arrigo Leonardo Angelini, Raquel Souza Lobo Guzzo e Maria Helena Souza Patto. All of the research material was composed by documental and oral resources. The investigative method was used from the perspective of pluralist historiography and oral history, an analysis of documents and oral testimony. This analysis produced categories of explanation to understand the testimmonials and historical documents. From that, of the analyzed material was organized so as to obtain a panoramic view of Educational and Scholar Psychology history was built. Then, empirical work, testimonials and his analysis are described. Each testimonials was analyzed singularity and after in total analysis. The results shows discussion about role, interest object and pratic actions in this area, as well as Educational and School Psychology proposes and his relation between theoric knowlegment and professional practices. It is then suggested a proposal of periodization of the history of Educational and School Psychology in Brazil, constructed from landmarks in the area, the periods: 1) Colonization, psychological knowledge and Education (1500-1914), 2) Psychology in other areas of knowledge (1914-1930), 3) Development - the New School and the psychologists in Education (1930-1962), 4) Educational Psychology and Psychology \"of the\" Student (1962-1981), 5) The time of critical studies (1981-1990), 6) Educational and School Psychology - reconstruction (1990-2000); 7) The turn of the century: new directions? (2000 -). The histoy of Educational and School Psychology, had moments of construction and reconstruction from its relationship with Education. It was influenced by the political, historical and social. Their story was continuities, discontinuities, ruptures, reconstructions and constant reflection on their role in society. In a few moments was served conservative interests and other interests emancipatory

Examining Paraprofessionals' Use of Video Self-Modeling in Teaching Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Fuentes, Derrainnya Raquel 01 January 2016 (has links)
The number of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) cases has surged in the U.S. educational system since the mid-2000s. At the same, paraprofessionals who work with these students are not being given adequate training, especially in how to implement applied behavior analytic services. To address paraprofessional's inadequate training, new behavioral treatments have surfaced, including Video Self-Modeling (VSM). VSM is an effective intervention tool derived heavily from Bandura's social learning theory. VSM uses edited video clips in which paraprofessionals view him or herself correctly performing target skills. This study used a single-subject, modified multiple baseline design to evaluate whether VSM could improve the accuracy of procedural integrity when implementing DTI. A sample of 5 novice paraprofessionals was used; all participants worked directly with ASD students with 6 months to 2 years experience, supported an ASD student in an inclusive setting for at least 75% of the school day, and had no previous training in DTI. Three of the 5 participants exhibited immediate and significant gains in DTI implementation, and those gains were maintained during follow-up. One participant demonstrated moderate gain during the follow-up. To determine effective significance, visual analysis, combined with level of performance, non-overlapping data points, and effect sizes were used. VSM treatment was rated as an acceptable treatment according to the social validity scale and the Intervention Rating Profile (IRP-15). This study contributes to positive social change by offering a viable treatment approach that can be used to train paraprofessionals who instruct students with ASD.
