The impact of an environmental education program on third graders' knowledge, attitudes and behavioral intentions

Vadala, Carin Elizabeth 30 September 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to measure whether an after-school environmental education program based on modified Project Wild materials, positively impacted third graders environmental knowledge, attitudes and behavioral intentions. Eight lesson plans were developed, piloted and re-designed over a one year period and then delivered to third graders for a total of eight weeks in a fall semester. The lessons included units on water, air, land, recycling, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. A pre-post test retrospective questionnaire was developed to determine changes in the participant's knowledge, attitudes and behavioral intentions as a result of participating in the program. Results indicate positive shifts in knowledge and changes in environmental attitudes and behavioral intentions. Recommendations were also made for future studies.

Build a Bone Bank with 3-A-Day After-School Education Program for Elementary Students

Cox, Heather K. 07 July 2008 (has links)
Objective: To determine whether a social cognitive theory guided nutrition educational intervention in an after-school program is associated with improved nutrition and physical activity knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and behaviors for fourth and fifth grade participants. Design: A prospective comparative study with a quasi-experimental design over a six month period. Questionnaires were collected at baseline and at the end of the program for students at the intervention and comparison schools. Follow-up questionnaires were collected at the intervention school three months post program. Subjects/Setting: Fourth and fifth grade students enrolled in an after-school program targeted to reach students performing below grade level and/or living below the poverty level at an elementary school in southwest Virginia. Fourth and fifth grade students at another county elementary school with similar demographics served as comparison participants. Main Outcome Measures: Daily food intake, dairy intake, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, environment, self-efficacy for consuming dairy products, and food and activity beliefs. Statistical Analysis: Measures of central tendency (mean, median, and variance) were performed to describe participants. Independent t-tests (p<0.05) were used to compare changes from pre to post-questionnaire by treatment group. Paired t-tests (p<0.05) were used to test for differences from pre to post-questionnaire within group. Chi square analysis (p<0.05) was conducted to further investigate changes between groups. Results: Intervention participants significantly increased previous day's milk consumption (p=.006) and plans to drink low-fat milk instead of regular milk (p =.047) from pre to post-program. Significant change was also observed in previous day's milk consumption change from pre to post between groups (p=.004). Conclusion: Participation in an after-school program with nutrition education could change daily milk consumption and plans to drink low-fat over regular milk. Applications: After-school nutrition interventions can be effective in changing milk intake and plans to consume low-fat milk. / Master of Science

Parent, Student, and Faculty Satisfaction With and Support of Campus Laboratory School Programs

Seo, Hyunnam 05 1900 (has links)
The primary purpose of the study was to investigate stakeholders' opinions concerning campus laboratory school program quality in three areas: (1) quality of teacher education, (2) research, and (3) childcare. There were 653 participants in the study: 246 parents whose children were enrolled in laboratory schools, 200 pre-service students who were taking early childhood or child development classes, and 207 faculty who were associated with campus laboratory schools. The study participants came from 122 campus children centers in the United States. These campus centers were members of either the National Coalition for Campus Children's Centers (NCCCC) or the National Organization of Laboratory Schools (NOLS). The first three research questions investigated whether parents, students, and faculty were satisfied with program quality. A one-way analysis of variance indicated a statistically significant mean difference between the three groups. The parents had a higher mean level of program quality satisfaction than students and faculty. The last three research questions investigated whether parents, students, and faculty supported the ongoing existence of campus laboratory school programs. Opinions were scaled from 1=not ever to 5=definitely. The overall mean ratings for Parents (4.54), students (4.18), and faculty (4.07) indicated that they supported the ongoing existence of campus laboratory programs. Future research should investigate cross-cultural issues related to campus laboratory school programs. It would also be important to study the effectiveness of Pell Grants that could provide funding of campus laboratory schools for a diverse group of children. A study could also be conducted that would explore differences in campus laboratory school programs and determine whether they respond differently to childcare demands.

Factors influencing low income minority parent satisfaction with selected after school programs

Parker, Chandra 01 May 2006 (has links)
This study seeks to examine low income, minority parents' perceptions of after school programs. The independent variables in the study were parental perceptions of supervision, communication, resources, transportation, program content and student academic engagement. The dependent variable was parental satisfaction with after school programs. A quantitative survey was distributed to all parents of students participating in the after school programs of four Title 1 schools in a large metropolitan Atlanta school system with over 70% student eligibility for free or reduced lunch and 85% minority student enrollment. One hundred eighty after school program parents responded to the survey through their child's daily communication planner. The results of the study indicated that there is a statistically significant relationship between parental satisfaction and each of the independent variables of supervision, communication, resources, transportation, program content and student academic engagement. A regression analysis found that the most impacting variables on parental satisfaction were program content, communication and transportation. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that after school programs that serve low income, minority families should ensure that transportation, effective student monitoring and structured activities are components of their program. After school programs that serve low income, minority families should provide safe methods of transportation from the after school site to the home of program participants. Finally, after school programs that serve low income, minority families should establish and maintain structured learning opportunities for program participants that include scheduled activities, active instruction and assistance by the after school teacher and an orderly classroom environment that allows participants to complete their assignments without distractions or interruptions from other participants.

O Programa Escola Interativa de São José dos Campos e a participação dos professores / The Interactive School Program of São José dos Campos and teacher participation

Lopes, Ronaldo de Souza 15 September 2017 (has links)
Isso fragilizou o potencial das tecnologias para a melhoria do ensino e da aprendizagem, não permitido o avanço do uso da tecnologia móvel dentro e fora da sala de aula, além gerar um prejuízo na interação entre professores, alunos e pais / The Interactive School Program of the São José dos Campos municipal school network consists of the use of hardware and software necessary for administrative management and digital and pedagogical interactivity among educational professionals, students and the school community. The objective of this study is to understand how the process of teacher participation occurs, as agents that have direct interaction with students and who live the daily life in the classroom observing the implementation and evaluation of this public policy. Believing that there is still a lack of work in this area, for the development of this work, bibliographical and documentary research, interviews and fieldwork were carried out. From the data analysis and the articulation of the theoretical foundations, we emphasize that the lack of participation of the teachers since the conception of the Program, resulted in the low use of technological resources and the lack of initial training for the use of pedagogical software and equipment. This has weakened the potential of technologies to improve teaching and learning, not allowed to advance the use of mobile technology inside and outside the classroom, and generate a loss in the interaction between teachers, students and parents. The Interactive School Program of the São José dos Campos municipal school network consists of the use of hardware and software necessary for administrative management and digital and pedagogical interactivity among educational professionals, students and the school community. Ancini, Denise Margareth Borges January 2017 (has links)
Objective: To implement education in health actions in the Federal Institute Farroupilha Alegrete campus (IFFAR / CA), integrated to the Health in School Program (PSE), standardizing activities, qualifying student assistance and stimulating the practice of themes Cross-sectional studies on health. Methodology: The research was carried out at IFFAR / CA and counted with80 students of the first year of the integrated technical course in Agriculture and 31 teachers, into two stages, with quantitative and quantitative / qualitative approaches. Data collection in the first stage (Component I) was performed through documentary analysis of the Multiprofessional Clinical Record of the institution's health sector, in a descriptive cross-sectional analytical study with a quantitative approach, and in the second stage (Component II) data collection was carried out through a semi structured online selfadministered questionnaire in the teachers, in a descriptive exploratory study with quantitative-qualitative approaches. The interpretation of the data of Component I was performed using Excel® software of Microsoft Office®, using absolute and relative values and measures of central frequency, mean and standard deviation, for the variables blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI) , dental evaluation and psychological evaluation. In Component II, quantitative data were processed using Likert scales, evaluated by the frequency distribution in each of the responses, while the qualitative data were interpreted by the thematic content analysis of Bardin. Results: Component I showed that the mean age of the students is 15.3 years, 56.25% (n = 45) are males, 53.75% (n = 43) of them are Campus and 36.25% (n = 29) come from the city of Alegrete / RS. In BMI, a prevalence of 18.75% of overweight and 6.25% of obesity was found, higher in females (20% and 11.4%) than males (17.8% and 2.2%). One hypertensive student (1.25%) was diagnosed, and students of both genders had 7.5% of pre-hypertensive individuals. Of the 68 students who underwent dental evaluation, 13% did not require intervention, 50% performed cleaning and 36.8%, restoration. 16.2% (n = 11) of the students were referred for external dental evaluation, most of them female (orthodontic treatment). 43.75% (n = 35) of the students were evaluated by the psychology sector, 20% (n = 16) for complaints of parents or teachers lacking interest or problems in classroom performance and 17.5% = 14) spontaneously sought. In Component II, 28.2% (n = 31) of the teachers answered the questionnaire; of these, 54.8% (n = 17) are female and 54.8% (n = 17) are in the age group between 30 and 39 years. 54.8% have been formed for at least 7 years, 54.9% have a master's degree and 25.8% have a PhD. Qualitative data showed that teachers have an interest in working on health topics, with the help of professionals in the area in the institution, in an innovative and continuous, interdisciplinary and multiprofessional way, and the themes suggested by them reflect those proposed by the Health in School Program. Final Considerations: It was verified that the actions of the PSE could be the institutional standard of activities of the health sector, being configured as an opportunity to meet the principle of integrality, articulating the work of health professionals and education, developing more focused actions in health promotion and allowing the expansion of adolescent care, enhancing singularities and school performance.

After-School Programs: Do Parents Matter?

DiMeo, Michelle A. 17 November 2011 (has links)
Previous research suggests that parents can benefit from youth participation in after-school programs. However, little research has explored parent involvement in after-school programs as an important program characteristic leading to youth development. Bioecological Systems Theory suggests that individuals are influenced by the interactions of others within their environment. Building from this theory, it was posited that parent benefits resulting from involvement in after-school programs can facilitate positive youth development. Surveys were completed by 117 parents whose daughters participated in the Cool Girls, Inc. after-school program, a program serving primarily low-income, African American, urban youth. Using Exploratory Factor Analysis, a three factor structure of parent benefits was identified. Parent benefits include increased (1) parent-child communication, (2) parent social capital, and (3) parent-school involvement. A fourth parent benefit of help for working parents was identified in subsequent analyses using a smaller sample of only working parents (n = 86). Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that more parent after-school program involvement was associated with increases in each of the four parent benefits. As predicted, each of the four parent benefits mediated the association between parent involvement in after-school programs and parent reported changes in positive youth development outcomes due to participation in Cool Girls, Inc. These results suggest the importance of further research into ways parents benefit from their child’s participation in after-school programs and how those benefits can influence youth developmental trajectories. These findings also demonstrate the importance of involving parents in after-school programs.
