An exploration of effective events influencing job satisfaction amongst secondary school teachers

du Preez, Danelle January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore what affective events influence job satisfaction amongst secondary school teachers of two private schools in Gauteng. The theoretical framework for this study was the Affective Events Theory as proposed by Weiss and Cropanzano. A total of 37 participants completed an open-ended questionnaire presenting an emotion and asking participants to describe an event that could be linked to the emotion experienced in as much detail as possible. Thereafter 6 participants were selected for follow-up interviews, based on age, gender and years' teaching experience to enquire about their perception on the role of leadership behaviour played in creating these events as well as investigating possible turnover intent. The results from this study highlighted that events which resulted in positive affectivity were mostly connected to learners as negative affective events involved leadership behaviour. It also highlighted how leadership behaviour contributed to these events and expressed possible turnover intent as a result of their experiences of these events at school. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Education Management and Policy Studies / MEd / Unrestricted

Gymnasieläraryrkets utveckling 1960-2000. Förändringar inom roll, status och auktoritet utifrån fyra lärares perspektiv

Persson, Niklas, van der Levin, Johan January 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to analyse the development of the teacher profession in the upper secondary school during the time period 1960-2000, with regard to the concepts role, status and authority. The investigation has been carried out using a qualitative method with material that has been gathered during interviews with four retired teachers. The analysis has been inspired by the theories of the Annales school as well as the generation and inheritance theories developed by Karl Marx. Our results show that the teacher profession has gone through a number of considerable changes, but also that there are components of the profession that have remained unchanged. In our analysis of the concepts role, status and authority, we have come to the conclusion that the role of the teacher has been the subject of most changes, although many respects of the profession are left unchanged. The status of the profession has also undertaken major changes and decreased severely. Formally, the authority has decreased as well, although in reality a certain authority level can still be perceived.

Professional development of ICT integration for secondary school teachers in Hong Kong: Towards a peer support enhanced model

Lee, Theodore Tai Hoi January 2007 (has links)
Although information and communication technology (ICT) has gradually become a standard teaching technology in schools in many countries and regions like Hong Kong, the implementation of ICT in teaching and learning in schools still fails to meet high government and public expectations. This study was an investigation into the potential of peer support to enhance professional development of ICT integration for secondary school teachers in Hong Kong. The study utilized peer support as a social approach to professional development and employed action research to examine the experiences of ten secondary school teachers who worked in five peer support groups for sixteen months. A peer support model was introduced to the participants who then applied these principles in their own contexts. Data on participants' reflections and evaluations of the peer support process was collected through individual interviews and peer-group conferences. Each participant was interviewed at the beginning, middle and end of the research period and each peer group was interviewed at the end of the project. By employing a grounded theory approach, themes related to the participants' experiences of peer support for ICT integration and the impact of peer support as a means of professional development were generated from the data. The study's findings indicate that the participants responded positively to peer support as a means of professional development. Peer support was successful in: increasing professional interactions; broadening perspectives of ICT; increasing reflection; and providing personal and emotional support. From an analysis of the study's findings, in conjunction with a review of the appropriate literature, a teacher professional development model for ICT integration has been developed that may be helpful in furthering the goal of successful ICT integration. This model focuses on the importance of intrinsic motivation rather than extrinsic incentives and is based on a developmental process in which individual teachers determine their own practice through peer support enhanced critical reflection that continually expands their personal context of ICT integration.

Cultures pédagogiques et identité professionnelle des professeurs des écoles et des collèges : Etude du rôle des arrière-plans culturels et contextuels dans les constructions identitaires et les relations école-collège / Pedagogical cultures and professional identities of primary and secondary school teachers : Study of the cultural and contextual background in the construction of the identities and the relations between primary and secondary schools

Volf, Virginie 08 December 2017 (has links)
Directly linked to the creation of the IUFMs (Instituts de Formation des Maîtres) in 1989, the recent evolutions in the French educational system (Law of July 2013 for the refoundation of school) show evidence, at the level of the institutions, of the willingness to get a close similarity between primary school and secondary school (named college in France) and to cancel the historical approach which considered primary school as dedicated to the people and secondary school reserved for an elite. The challenge is to remove everything which may be an obstacle to the continuity from primary to secondary in order to take charge of the pupils in better conditions. But has this willingness permitted to really overcome the antagonisms and led to a shared pedagogical culture and even generated a common professional identity ?The aim of this thesis is to identify all the points of convergence but particularly also the disrupting points between teachers in primary and teachers in secondary schools and to understand more precisely what is the origin of the differences, the way they occur and the consequences they produce, in the purpose of knowing much better how to proceed to remove the obstacles and to improve the transition from primary to secondary. Three methods of collection of datas have been used : ethnographical survey of actual relationship between teachers (in both educational levels) in three local education grids (favourable background – mixed rural environment – areas declared as a priority), answers to questionnaires (sent to almost 200 teachers, half of them in primary, half in secondary schools) and biographical interviews (10 teachers in primary and 11 in secondary schools). The datas have been analysed considering both the quality and the quantity (with the use of softwares such as Statbox and IRaMuTeq). The professional identities of the teachers have been examined through consideration of the several variables they are made of : private (biography), background (social, historical and professional), pedagogical (pedagogical culture). They have been compared in order to point out the part played by the pedagogical cultures in the way identity is formed. This survey has demonstrated that, although pedagogical cultures are highly the same, the professional identities of the teachers in primary and of the teachers in secondary schools are still deeply impregnated by the history of the image of the professions with which they both consider each other and that the image has a different « thickness » both sides. The survey has also revealed that young teachers in secondary schools nowadays start developing a professional identity common to both levels.

Backe, Ida January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to look into and analyze the view on sex equality in textbooks and teaching media, and teaching of a group of upper secondary school teachers, through a gender perspective. The teachers teach subjects within social- and political science. The two questions that I wanted to answer are: What views do the teachers have on sex equality in their teaching? What views do the teachers have on sex equality in the teaching media (textbooks and other teacher media) which they have access to? Since I wanted to look into the teachers own views I chose unstructured interviews as the method of gather empirical information. To interpret the transcribed texts I chose the hermeneutic view of people as intentional. I interviewed six teachers in an upper secondary school, four men and two women. I have interpreted the interviews through a gender perspective, based on theories by Yvonne Hirdman, Maria Hedlin, Ylva Elvin-Nowak, Heléne Thomsson and Britt-Marie Thurén. Theories that have been acknowledged are gender, gender making, the male norm, structure, how to integrate sex equality, mentors and models, and feminism. Previous researches that I have focused on are thesis of Eva Gannerud, and Victoria C Wahlgren. The conclusion of the study is that some of the teachers’ did not think that most of the textbooks they used contained an aspect of sex equality, some of them seldom used textbooks and if they wanted a sex equality aspect of the teaching they had to find supplement material on their own. In my analysis I found that the teachers felt responsibility but did not feel that they had room for increased teaching by adding sex equality to the existing lesson material. I argue that the responsibility should not lie on the individual teacher to figure out supplement for sex equality aspects on their own, but the responsibility should lay on the school system as a whole, teachers training included.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Selma Oliveira Alfonsi.pdf: 2426377 bytes, checksum: a1be6c2af8879c981143f463359ef4d0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-03-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research aimed to investigate whether the demands placed on the secondary school teachers are taken into account by the continuing educational processes they have, compared to what they live at school. The option for carrying out this research, focused on the secondary school, is due to the fact that important issues are raise in this context that require assertive teachers mediations, as those issues may have an impact on children and adolescents learning process. We believe that the continuing education in service is an important tool to introduce teachers in their working environment and potencialize their practices. Being able to teach in a secure way and being aware of their choices can help teachers to improve their students learning skills and build their project of life. This is a qualitative research carried out with six school managers (one principal and five coordinators) and 41 teachers from two public schools in the city of São Paulo, that take part in Programa de Ensino Integral -PEI, (that is an educational program which students spend the whole day at school). For data gathering it was applied a questionaire to the teachers and interviews were conducted with the managers. The theoretical approach used was the one related to teaching education field, such as, Canário (1998, 2001), Fullan e Hargreaves (2000), Nóvoa (1992), Marcelo Garcia (1999), Gatti e Nunes (2009), Gatti (2003, 2010), Imbernón (2011, 2009), Libâneo (2015, 2012, 2007), Marcelo (1999), Marcelo e Vaillant (2012), Davis et al. (2012a, 2012b), Shulman (1987). The data analysis was done by using some of the principles of content analysis by Bardin (2011). Data were gathered in two categories: Educational actions: places and the participation of teachers and managers; The teachers education in school: guideliness, themes and teachers opinion about them; 3. The continuing education on the secondary school: challenges and needs. The first hipothesis of this thesis was that the educational processes experienced by the teachers might not help them to face the existing challenges at school. The result showed that, at the schools where this research was held, as they have a systematic teachers educational program, closely wached by the managers, their needs are somehow fulfilled. It was also possible to notice that PEI is a program which brings oportunities to teachers and students to develop their potencialities. It’s worth pointing out the role of the area coordinators in the development of the teachers education in those schools / Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo geral investigar se as demandas dos docentes do Ensino Fundamental II, em relação ao vivido na escola, são contempladas nos processos de formação continuada em contexto dos quais participam. A formação continuada no Ensino Fundamental II: desafios e necessidades.

Aplikace kompetenčního modelu v podmínkách veřejné obchodní akademie / Applying the Competence Model in the Public Business Academy

Dobaková, Petra January 2019 (has links)
The thesis deals with the use of competences and competency model as an effective tool of personnel management of the organization. Competency - based / HR / Management (CBM) is an actively used model primarily in the commercial sphere. However, in recent years, more and more government organizations have also approached this governance model. The theoretical and empirical part of the thesis deals with the issue of acquiring and using various types of competencies, compiling a competency model and their subsequent application in personnel management. The definition of basic terms and principles of competency management is based on the study of professional literature and binding documents that link the principles of competence management to the lifelong learning strategy and learning organization models. The empirical part first deals with the actual use of competencies and competency models in the conditions of public business academies in Prague and Central Bohemia. It describes the current state of use of human resources management by competency of the director of public business academies in the region. The observed state is compared with the results of the Trexima, spol. s r.o. in the commercial organizations, which was implemented in 2014. The empirical part is further focused on the...

EU-undervisning på högstadiet och gymnasiet : En kvalitativ studie om kunskapsprogression / Education about EU in secondary school and high school : A qualitative study on knowledge progression

Borg, Linnea January 2020 (has links)
Despite the fact that knowledge regarding EU plays a larger role today in both steering documents for secondary school and high school has imperfections been identified. The students are not given enough knowledge and finish high school with a lack of understanding of EU and their own role as citizens in EU. This raises questions regarding how the education of the subject is managed in secondary and high school and also if a knowledge progression is made possible. The purpose of this study is to put a light on the thoughts of teachers in secondary- and high schools about their EU education to be able to analyze if their teaching makes a progression of the students’ knowledge possible regarding their knowledge of EU. To make such a study possible the survey was conducted through qualitative interviews of four social science teachers in secondary school and four social science teachers in high school have been made. The study was been based on the assumption that education about EU is lacking and that knowledge progression is not adequate which to a part is proved by the result of the study. The result showed a similar education in both stages which therefore doesn’t point to a knowledge progression. At the same time parts of the education in high school indicates a deepened study of different knowledge areas studied in secondary school which therefore favors knowledge progression, but at the same time progression can be reduced by identified factors like lack of time, “overcrowded” subject areas and lack of interest from both students and teachers. The study shows that the assumption that imperfections exists in EU education and that a degree of limited knowledge progression is true, but it also shows that there are possible explanations to why this may be.
