The Appearing of the Sublime: the Recovery of the Sublime in Nature through Art / El aparecer de lo sublime: la recuperación de lo sublime en la naturaleza a través del arte

The Kantian interpretation of the sublime proposes in its assessment a predominant place to the contemplation of nature. Contemporary interpretations, on the other hand, focus their attention upon the capacity of art as a de-structuralizing element, in order to give an account of a historical development of the arts in the way of the sublime. The present paper holds that, since Martin Seel’s Aesthetics of Appearing, it is possible to link both approaches by means of an existential interpretation of the experience of the sublime that stresses the role of time, and thus recovers the experience of the natural sublime in the absence of a super-sensible foundation. / La interpretación kantiana de lo sublime propone en su enjuiciamiento un lugar preponderante a la contemplación de la naturaleza. Las interpretaciones contemporáneas, por su parte, fijan su atención en la capacidad del arte como elemento desestructurante, a fin de dar cuenta de un desarrollo histórico de las artes en la vía de lo sublime. El presente trabajo sostiene que, desde la Estética del aparecer de Martin Seel, es posible vincular ambas lecturas a través de una interpretación existencial de la experiencia de lo sublime que enfatice el rol del tiempo y recuperar así la experiencia de lo sublime natural en ausencia de un fundamento suprasensible.

Title: Metaphor and Contemporary Art Author: Mgr. et MgA. Markéta Magidová Department: Department of Aesthetics Supervisor: Mgr. Ondřej Dadejík, Ph.D Abstract In my dissertation I present arguments for the validity of the aesthetic conception of art (a conception based on the notion of aesthetic experience) also in relation to the development of art movements in the last half century. I do so on the basis of an interpretation of the aesthetic dimension of art through art theory as an extended concept of metaphor. I argue that it is the living metaphor that functions in works of (not only) contemporary art as their aesthetic model. I elaborate this idea through the interconnection of three convergent and currently influential concepts: Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic theory of living metaphor, Martin Seel's aesthetics of appearing, and Alva Noë's theory of art as a strange tool. I lay out the key conditions and characteristics of the process of the emergence of metaphorical meaning and then relate these to the characteristics of artistic appearance. Der Text resummiert die Erfahrungen mit dem Fach Musik, die aus einem wissenschaftlich begleiteten Modellversuch "Profiloberstufe" der Max Brauer Schule in Hamburg hervorgegangen sind. Im Kern steht erstens die Darstellung von Systematisierungen, die sich verallgemeinerbar für fachübergreifendes und fächerverbindendes Gestalten von Lehr-Lern-Situationen ergeben haben, sowie die Fokussierung des Fachspezifischen des Schulfachs Musik im Unterschied zu anderen Schulfächern wie Geschichte, Fremsprache, Religion u.a. Darüber hinaus stellt das Musik-Curriculum einen Umsetzungsversuch der von Martin Seel unterschiedenen drei Dimensionen des Ästhetischen dar. / The text sums up the experiences with a school subject Music in a "Profiloberstufe", which means a way of inter- and multidisciplinary way of teaching and learning in the upper secondary level. Fretting behavior of AISI 301 stainless steel sheet in full hard condition

Fretting, which can occur when two bodies in contact undergo a low amplitude relative slip, can drastically reduce the fatigue performance of a material. The extent of fretting damage is dependent on the material combination and is affected by many parameters, making it difficult to design against fretting. Some of these parameters include contact force, displacement amplitude, and contacting materials. This work develops a method for quantifying the extent of damage from fretting as a function of these parameters for a thin sheet of AISI 301 stainless steel in the full hard condition in contact with both ANSI A356 aluminum and AISI 52100 steel contacting bodies. Fretting experiments were conducted on a Phoenix Tribology DN55 Fretting Machine using a fixture which was developed for holding thin specimens. The displacement amplitude and normal force were systematically varied in order to cover a range that could typically be experienced during service. The tribological behavior was studied by analyzing friction force during cycling and inspecting the resulting surface characteristics. Fretting damaged specimens were cycled in tension in a servohydraulic test system to failure. The decrease in fatigue life caused by fretting damage was determined by comparing the stress-life (S-N) response of the fretted specimens to the S-N response of the virgin material, thus characterizing the severity of the fretting damage. The conditions that lead to the greatest reduction in life were identified in this way. Using the fracture mechanics based NASGRO model, an Equivalent Initial Flaw Size (EIFS) was used to quantify the level of fretting damage, thus separating the life of the component into crack nucleation and subsequent propagation. This method and data will allow engineers to design more robust components that resist fretting damage, thus increasing the safety and reliability of the system.
